I am on a very tight budget, so before I made an appointment I called 6 optometrists in the area to get the cheapest price. These guys told me if I got the coupon they had out of the Roundup flier then it would be $90 for a contact lens appointment. This was $5 more than Costco and the same price a Wal-Mart.
The appointment went well, but when I went to pay they told me it was almost $200, I totally didn't understand why it was more and they said the fine print of the coupon states that trial pair of specialty contact lenses makes the appointment more expensive. The stupid coupon said that the trial lenses were free, and then they think they need to charge me $100 for them. I would not be so mad if they had told me that they were going to charge me more before the charges were incurred (When you make minimum wage every dollar counts).
I have never worn specialty lenses in my life and now I think they claim I do just so they can charge me another $100. At my next doctors visit (at Costco for just $85 that also came with a free pair of lenses) I was told that specialty lenses were not necessary.
I even asked at Wal-Mart and Costco how much of an additional cost the appointment would be if I had needed specialty lenses, Costco said there would be no additional cost and Wal-Mart said it would be a maxim of $20. I felt totally ripped off after that.
Ugh, don't buy glasses from these places either, I have bought from Zenni for years now, you don't even need a current prescription, just use your most recent one. $9.95 glasses from Zenni are the bomb, my kids break them and I don't have to cry because I paid $200 from a place like this.
Another thing that irked me:
The regular box of contacts that I get costs $22 for 6 contacts, while the more expensive contacts that they gave me were $44 dollars for a box of 6. They gave me 2 specialty contacts, not two boxes, just two contacts. The math comes out to $7 more for those two contacts, not $100. I am sure they even get them cheaper for that because they are a seller.
These guys rip you off when you buy contact lenses from them too, they were significantly more than Vision Direct, where I get my contacts lenses on-line, Vision Direct was almost half off their prices because I had a 25% off coupon and they were having a sale if you bought a specific amount. read more
