Food was good but the service was not great. It was a Thursday night and not that busy so I am not sure what the disconnect was with the waiter. When he was at the table he was polite but he was not very attentive. Checked in on us late in our meal and no drink refills until the end of our meal. We waited about 10 minutes once we finished eating before he checked in again, bussed about half the table, dropped off the check and another longer than necessary wait to return with my credit card. I'm bummed to have to give this place only three stars. With a bit of improvement, The Ore House could be a five star joint. After sitting down, we started looking around the restaurant, and the decor is really cool. It's very late 1800s early 1900s Durango in there. A couple sitting next to us recommended their ribeyes so I got the Prime Ribeye, and my wife got the normal Ribeye. Oddly enough, after they recommended that, we heard the waitress apologizing to them and offering them 15% off their bill. The bread came out, and it is pretty unique and epic. They serve the little corn bread muffins with bacon butter, and it really is delicious. In addition to our steaks, we ordered creamed corn and mashed potatoes. I ordered my steak rare plus, and my wife ordered her steak rare. Our meals took a long time to come out. The waitress didn't check in on us very often, and I noticed that a couple that sat down after us had already begun eating their food. When the steaks finally came out, they LOOKED amazing. And I immediately took a bite out of the creamed corn, and I must say that the preparation is really unique. Definitely get this as a side if you come here. It comes in a little skillet, and it's baked with a crust on top. My wife cut into her steak, and it looked awesome. I cut into mine.. and... it was not red at all. In fact, there wasn't even any pink. It was burnt all the way through. It took a while for the waitress to ask how our steaks were, and while I'm not one to send back a steak if it's off by one level... i.e. if I order rare, but I get medium rare, fine... no big deal... but this was not really edible. She apologized, and she took it back. She brought me a plate so I could have some of my wife's steak and the sides. It took a really long time for my $40 steak to come out for the second time, and by the time it did, I had already munched on enough sides and my wife's steak that I didn't even really feel like eating most of it, which is a shame! When it was all said and done, the waitress wasn't even the person who brought us the bill. It was the bus boy. He told us that they "took care of the drinks" for us. Took care of the drinks? I got a beer, and my wife got an iced tea. On a bill of over $100, they gave us like $6 free. Meanwhile, the table next to us got their order botched, and they were offered 15%. This is a top notch place, but if the service is going to be poor and the steaks are going to be overcooked, especially for the price they're asking, then it gets three stars in my book. Seeing as how the table next to us had similar issues, just have your expectations in line when you come here. The only bad thing was the bartender had run out of Peychaud's bitters for a Sazerac, then forgetting our drink order and serving 6 others who came in after us while trying to claim he was "going around the bar to be fair." The maître d' let him know we had been waiting for our drinks but that just seemed to make the bartender move slower. When we finally got our drinks 45 minutes later they were delicious and the maître d' did comp them so it helped with our disappointment regarding the poor bar service. What a gem! The outside of the building is very pretty wood accents decorated with lovely wreaths. Inside is interesting old style building. The place was packed and considering how good the service and food was it is no surprise. Our server was polite, always had a smile and did a great job. I ordered the chicken cordon blue with a gorgonzola sauce. Outstanding! As my sides I got the mashed potatoes, more like twice baked potatoes and the brussel sprouts. The Ore House has been our go-to spot for special occasions for many years. It's a little expensive but has always been worth it. We were very happy when they finally 'moved back in' last year after the CoVid shutdown and we were recently here for our anniversary. Unfortunately, and I hope this may be due to the worker / supply shortages, our experience was disappointing based on what we have come to expect. First, we did not get the little 'extras' we had enjoyed in the past - no 'happy anniversary' greeting (we had noted it on our reservation), no second cornbread skillet, and, in fact, we were only checked on when I hauled our waitress down to get a second drink, (and of course the friendly visit and smiley face when delivering the check). But the real disappointment was the food. The kitchen does do us a favor and halve our (shared) steak, throwing my wife's half back on the grill to reach medium well done status. However, they seemed to have thrown BOTH halves back on. My medium steak had not a hint of pink. Our loaded baked potato was loaded but also overcooked (probably sitting in a warmer) until the skin was hard and crusty and difficult to cut even with my steak knife. We'll try TOH again, but maybe our next celebration will be somewhere else. (As a final note, the mac & cheese is still good (add the lobster) but not AS good as when they used a different little pasta a couple of years back.) read more

Definitely a highlight of the menu. The sides we got - mashed potatoes and brussel sprouts - were just ok. Mashed potatoes were very bland, and sprouts were kind of basic. The hatch green chile mac and cheese looked good, but we did not get a chance to try it. The service was hit or miss. Our waitress had a lot of tables seat at once so we could see she was busy. However, the wait for most things was very long. Wine menu was pretty limited as was the overall liquor selection at the bar. I used to really like the Ore House. I came here back in the day when they had the salad bar in the back; I enjoyed the steaks and service then. I came here later on, too, after the restaurant was updated and the salad bar taken out. The service was still good and the steaks were delicious. For a long time I was prepared to give the Ore House five stars. Unfortunately, the last time I came, I became very ill after eating the snow crab and shrimp cocktail appetizer. As my husband doesn't eat shellfish, I ordered it and ate it by myself. We both ate steaks and enjoyed our evening. However, late that evening I came down with vomiting and other gastrointestinal distress. My husband was fine. The only thing I could imagine was that there was some tainted shellfish in the appetizer and because I alone had eaten it, I was the only one of us to have symptoms. When I emailed the company to let them know that they might have served tainted shellfish, I never received any sort of response--not even an auto-reply! I didn't want anything; I simply believe that acknowledgment of my email would have sufficed. I have never gone back to the Ore House and will never do so again. In a town like Durango, there are plenty of other restaurants that have quality service, delicious food, and will contact their guests if issues arrive. The Ore House sadly let me down when they let my email go by without so much as an acknowledgment or apology. I celebrated the end of my week here, just looking for a little nicer dinner. Although the outside seems a little corny "old west" the inside is really pretty nice. Not a big place, I was still able to walk right in and grab a seat, although to be fair, it was a February Tuesday, so I don't think it's exactly high season. I went with a filet and the "peppersteak" preparation, which is both a peppercorn crust and a peppercorn cream sauce. This was pretty awesome. The steak was maybe just a shade to the raw side of medium rare, which was a nice surprise, and coated in nice chewy peppercorns, along with a good amount of creamy sauce. The sauce had nice flavor - I don't think it was the cognac peppercorn sauce listed elsewhere on the menu, since I didn't detect scallions, but it was good, and I think i detected a little cognac type flavor in the sauce. Beef itself was pretty flavorful too. Only downside was that the steak released a lot of juice and diluted the sauce on the plate when I cut in to it, maybe should have been allowed to rest a bit. For my side, I did the green chile creamed corn (because that was I could have creamed corn and a green vegetable) and although this was good, I wanted something a little different. This was almost equal parts roasted green chiles and corn, which I wasn't opposed to, but rather than being what you'd expect from a "creamed" veggie, it was almost too cheesy. Yes, cheese was listed in the description, but it was over the top - stringy with melted cheese, and much as I love me some cheese, I would say this was gilding the lily. What I wanted was the corn and chiles in a smoother cream sauce. Now, did I eat most of what was put in front of me? Yep. But it wasn't exactly what I was imagining when I ordered. BUT all that semi-hate for the creamed corn aside, this was very good, all in all. Would definitely come back if I was looking for a nice meal, and have already recommended to coworkers, if they're ever back in the area. read more

After enjoying a well-made White Russian I started with an exceptionally great Caesar salad. I was then served some yummy corn bread while I awaited my dinner. I chose the 'Ore House style' for my New York steak. This was crab meat, Bernaise sauce and grilled asparagus. To say that absolutely everything about the meal was perfect would not be an exaggeration! My steak was flavorful and cooked exactly as ordered. A week and a half later and I'm still thinking about this meal. The more I ruminate the more I believe that the joy of eating at the Ore House goes beyond the food itself. The food was excellent. Everything about the steak, the sides, the appetizers was as close to perfect as I have had at a restaurant. But, the experience of being there and being welcomed to this restaurant by the staff is what made the night the best place for our 20 year anniversary dinner. The waitstaff genuinely wanted you to have a wonderful time. I teach high school theatre and I talk to my students all the time about the importance of shifting the focus from your performance to the experience of the audience. I believe this is the mindset of everyone from the host to the waiters to the management. It's a job, but not JUST a job. They truly enjoy what they are doing and where they work. It's evident. AWESOME! There were 8 of us in our party. Our server was excellent. She made sure we wanted for nothing. My husband had the rib eye cooked medium rare. It was a tad overcooked but he also likes it like that. I had the prime rib eye steak. Mine was overcooked but they took care of it immediately. I like my steak more to the rarer side. I still have no complaints because I ate the entire portion of meat. Others in our party ordered lobster tails, fish, steak tartare with a salad, bacon wrapped filet and a petite filet. Everyone raved about there meal. We had the brussels sprouts cooked with some balsamic glaze. I highly recommend they were a little crunchy as they should be. So sad! Pre Covid, The Ore House used to be the best and our favorite restaurant in Durango, CO....If not, anywhere! We had dinner tonight and we were so disappointed that our favorite restaurant has lost its it's caché. Prices have gone up dramatically which is ok except quality has gone down. While the service was great and they have added nice touches such as the pre dinner cocktail taster, the quality of food has taken a big step backwards. A $70 ish steak was only ok. The baked potatoe was over done and cold, dessert while nicely done but also served cold. So sad, hope this was just an off night. read more
