We had a thoroughly entertaining evening at the Ore House. The food, service and ambiance were beyond all expectations. I am difficult to please, and I am arrogant and pretentious, especially when it comes to food. I expected to "drink" my dinner in Durango, appreciating the Colorado "pours" after moving to Utah. However, my steak, stew, and wedge were world class, and were close to the excellence of the great steakhouses in New York, Chicago, and Dallas. No, The Ore House wasn't quite as good, but it was close, and we're in Durango, Colorado! Mark and Taibe were fantastic bartenders and servers. They made dining fun, the way it should be. Laughter, frivolity, and joy should be an integral part of eating at a restaurant. UTAH RESTAURANTEURS TAKE NOTE!!! We had a great time and were charmed by Mark and Taibe. Prices were moderately high, but we got what we paid for. We are both looking forward to next Friday when we shall ADDENDUM: We went back for dinner to the Ore House in December and had another wonderful time and meal. This time Ryan engaged us with his knowledge of wine. Unfortunately, I talked his ear off and he probably wanted to shove a grapefruit in my mouth. We celebrated 0ur 40th wedding anniversary last night at the Ore House. To begin with, we made a reservation ( Strongly Recommend ) and asked to have a quiet area in the restaurant , because I wear hearing aids. They made sure we had a nice corner table towards the back of the restaurant . This place is A-plus!! The service and food are outstanding . Be prepared to pay. You are getting what you pay for--- amazing food and SERVICE! Our waiter Adam was amazing. He made recommendations all the way to the different Bourbons they had to offer. My husband and I visited The Ore House to celebrate our 20 year anniversary. We both agreed, without a doubt, this was the best meal we've ever had. Also the priciest, but you get what you pay for. The food, drinks, and service were phenomenal. My husband got a wedge salad and I had a caesar. I had a petite sirloin and he had the Delmonico ribeye. 4.5 stars. Don't let the rugged exterior fool you - this place is legit! Interior is cozy and inviting, and the bar is epic. Wine list is well-selected and well-priced. Service friendly and efficient. You'll need to let the server know how fast/slow you want to dine. The kitchen turns out food quickly. Now on to that food. Wow! I've been to great steakhouses all over the country and this place holds its own and more. The complimentary cornbread is to die for. Sweet, tender cornbread with a delicate bacon butter. Great start. We had a spinach salad with bacon dressing (OMG) and beets, and a mixed green salad to start. Both excellent. The garlic croutons added interest to the mixed greens and the house honey lemon dressing is so wonderful. Now let's talk steaks. Hubs had the delmonico ribeye and it was well-marbled and cooked to perfection. The three dipping sauces (bearnaise, chimichuri, red pepper) added so much interest. I had the petite filet, also cooked to perfection, and a plump, well-prepared lobster tail. I was in the area and ordered a steak for takeout as most indoor dining was shut down in Durango due to COVID. While I'm sure the regular restaurant food is great (the steak was cooked perfectly), what you get for takeout does not justify the full regular price that normally not only pays for the food but also the ambience. I think 3.5 would be more accurate as this is a higher priced steakhouse. The food isn't bad by any means, but when I go to a steakhouse I want a steak that is unrivaled by anything I could make on the grill at home. Unfortunately my steak was no better than my own(which is still bomb), but I did expect better! Service was great as well as the apps. Great service! A very small, nice place to treat yourself to delicious food and beverage services. Very personable staff who use their charms to enhance your dining experience. We enjoyed the following: wedge salad, lobster, rib eye, Mac n cheese, crème brûlée. All were so good!! For those prices I'd expect bigger pieces of fish or for it to not be all a-la-cart. There just wasn't a lot there for a very expensive piece of fish. I got the onion soup, salmon and a side of asparagus. All great but the onion soup was just okay served in a small delicate bowl. For a rustic looking building and town, it'd be much better if they served this in the cast iron skillets they use for the mushroom appetizer...with a big chunk of bread and a lot more cheese. French onion soup does not belong in a small bowl at small portions. Asparagus was very good. Sauce was a little too heavy and overwhelming, though. Maybe use less or serve it on the side. Made my crisp healthy vegetables seem like the most unhealthy option in front of me. I think the menu has changed since some of these reviews as I didn't see any salad bar around. I'd go back. I so wanted to love this place but the service was the worst we got while vacationing in Durango. After paying 50 dollars for a reservation I knew I was in for an amazing night. Last night we came here and after the amazing hostess showing us our table, we waited, and waited, and waited for someone to take our order...I saw waiters/waitresses walking around, talking to other guests as we simply just sat there. After 15 minutes I flag a waitress down and asked her, " who is our waiter?" To what she replies, " Let me get her is Victoria or Veronica!" ( don't remember the exact name) after another 5 minutes she comes to our table and we're already feeling uncomfortable. If it wasn't for the reservation deposit fee we would have left. So she comes and we decided to just put our whole entire order for fear of her not checking up on us for another 20 minutes. She leaves and comes back with cornbread, water and out drinks. They sat two ladies on our right side and for the entire night she (our waitress) talked and talked, and laughed and joke with these women all night. We waited over ten minutes to get our food picked up, we were never offered a refill, we served our own water while she talked and talked to the ladies at our right. It was frustrating! Our bill was 220 and we still tipped her 20% which she did not deserve! Overall we will never come back. We felt neglected and just completely ignored! I've wanted to try out the Ore House for a while, and just happened to schedule a date night on their grand re-opening night, and the first night of their fixed price menu. I cannot say enough good things about our experience! The cocktails were creative and well executed, the food was superb, and our waiter was fantastic. Oh, and I saw the next day that they had left me a voicemail asking if I could possibly shift my reservation to help them manage some COVID-related seating logistics, but obviously I did not shift my reservation since I didn't notice the missed call or voicemail. No one said a word about it or gave me any indication that anything was amiss. I definitely look forward to dining here again. read more

Very very disappointed! The reputation they have for being so wonderful fell way short. While the Delmonico ribeye was great, everything else was awful. We got Mac and cheese, crispy Brussel sprouts, sautéed mushrooms and loaded baked potato. All the sides were cold! They had been sitting and it was obvious. Mac and cheese was rubbery and I don't know what type of cheese was used but it was way too pungent. The crispy brussel sprouts were burnt, cold with no seasoning. The loaded baked potato had been sitting on something warm? For a very long time as the bottom was so hard you couldn't even cut it with the steak knife. The sautéed mushrooms were flavorless. Was here on business and decided to splurge a bit. Location is great, right off college street, around the corner from where we were staying. The place is small, cozy and the newly remodeled restaurant is quaint and trendy. We were quickly seated, but it took a bit for the sever to great us and take our drink orders. He brought out cornbread in a small griddle and it was quite tasty. It's just perfectly cooked and not too sweet with a nice heaping serving of butter. It's a steak house so of course I ordered the New York dry aged steak with a side of asparagus. Everything is ala carte so If u want sides, that's an extra cost. I think if you pay $38 for a steak, it should at least come with a side of veggies. Nonetheless, the steak was at most decent. I was a bit disappointed because the steak wasn't a magical as I'd hope for. It was a bit over cooked (I ordered medium) and tough. It's just lightly salted, which was exactly how I like it. My coworker got the pork chop special and let me tell you, that is heaven!!! It was cheaper and you actually got sides with it for less than $30. I wished I had ordered the pork chop instead, as the steak was a bit of a let down. I will def go back, but not for the steak. read more

This restaurant is not what it used to be. The spark left this place when Covid hit. Prices have went through the roof. Steaks are not very good for the price. Recently, prior to Covid lockdown, we had a Michelin starred meal in Carmel, CA and this meal from Ore House blew it out of the water. The layers of flavor and combinations were so wonderful. Plus, the dinner was advertised as a whiskey paired dinner. I asked for a wine pairing. The chef perfectly paired each course to a very well balanced and complimentary wine. Took my wife to the Ore House for our 27th anniversary. She loved it, the food was amazing and the service was excellent. Very small restaurant but huge on flavor on all their dishes. We didn't have cocktails, however; the old fashion I saw them make looked amazing as well. The conversation was a little odd, but I suppose that is the appeal for one of the bartenders. The atmosphere was perfect. Warm, inviting, with the service that will impress. The only reason for the 4 Stars was the cost.
