I was excited to go to Orchids for a family celebratory meal on the island. It was a spectrum of highs and lows, but mostly highs -- if you're willing to swallow the price. Getting the disappointment out of the way, the price particularly the $30+ tiny lobster salad felt a bit egregious. I have no problem paying for quality, but there was one very small lobster claw and one shrimp on a few leaves of lettuce, which was a letdown. Not a shareable dish if you enjoy ordering sharing dished for the table, this is not that kind of establishment. On to the positives: the service was impeccable, with incredibly kind and attentive staff - no complaints there whatsoever. The food quality and preparation were also excellent. Not the most memorable meal of your life, but the seabass was perfectly cooked and the coconut cake was light and fluffy as could be. The chefs are clearly skilled, so if you don't mind elevated prices for small portions, you likely won't be disappointed. The amuse-bouche on the spoon was a nice unexpected touch. The ambiance is also lovely, just across the lawn from the entertainment at Without a Key. I initially would have given 3 stars due to the underwhelming lobster salad, but the though the service and food quality did help balance it out, so I landed at 4 stars. read more

This review is for the Sunday brunch buffet. This is currently one of my favorite buffets on Oahu. First off, the food selection is diverse AND delicious. There are multiple carving stations, a sushi station, and a salad station. There's also made-to-order ramen and omelette stations (the ramen is meh - the omelette is better!). And don't get me started about the pastries and the desserts!!!! They also have champagne - perfect for a special brunch moment. On top of the great food, the view of the ocean is spectacular. There is usually a live piano player too - it's just perfect. The service is great and matches the special atmosphere. I have always felt taken care of here. If you are looking for a special occasion brunch (or honestly just want to treat yourself), come here. I'm sure you won't regret it! read more

We are returning guests to Orchids, but our experience on June 29 was unacceptable. After we politely requested a quieter table, a hostess told us that all oceanside tables, both inside and outside, were "committed," despite multiple visibly empty tables, and instructed us to leave the restaurant and wait outside. This was especially surprising because, in our experience, guests may request a preferred seating area, but specific oceanside tables are not guaranteed in advance. While we waited, the same hostesses seated several couples and families who arrived after us at oceanfront tables, both inside and outside. This was directly inconsistent with what we had just been told. No guest should be treated this way. This experience fell far short of the refined and gracious service associated with Halekulani. read more

The restaurant is absolutely beautiful -- open-air, elegantly designed, and perfectly situated with a breathtaking oceanfront view of Waikiki and Diamond Head. The atmosphere is sophisticated yet relaxed, and the service was first-class -- friendly, attentive, and professional from start to finish. We began with an impressive selection of appetizers: * Prime Beef Filet Carpaccio - $29 Thinly sliced, melt-in-your-mouth tender beef topped with Parmigiano-Reggiano, truffle aioli, shaved truffle, and tapioca chips. A perfect starter. * Hamachi - $32 Light, citrusy, and perfectly fresh with orange supremes and wasabi buttermilk -- vibrant and well-balanced. * Mushroom Risotto - $48 (Mid-Course) Creamy, earthy, and luxurious with porcini dust, Hudson Valley foie gras, and white truffle oil -- absolutely fantastic. * Burrata Cheese - $26 Creamy burrata paired with dehydrated Ho Farms tomatoes, arugula, crostini, and Hawaiian sea salt. Wonderfully aromatic and rich. To accompany dinner, we enjoyed three martinis at $22 each and two glasses of wine at $30 each, all served chilled and beautifully presented. For dessert, we shared the Pineapple Sorbet and Coconut Cake. While both were good, they were the least impressive part of the meal and didn't quite match the excellence of the rest of the dining experience. The total came to about $390 before tax and tip, which felt high but reasonable for the level of quality, service, and overall experience. Overall, Orchids is one of Honolulu's finest dining experiences -- world-class food, impeccable service, and an unbeatable view. The only reason it's not a full five stars is the slightly underwhelming desserts, but everything else was truly outstanding. We'll definitely return on our next trip to Waikiki. read more

Brunch at Orchids is an experience. It is definitely not an everyday place to eat at $118/pp. Welll it can't be, it's Sunday Brunch, but for a special occasion, I would definitely save up and go here. The location gives you spectacular views of the ocean and hotel grounds. The ambiance was very relaxing with the open air seating. The staff was always there for you to refill your coffee (which is so good!), clear your plates and assist you with your food" haul" from the buffet. They provide a tray for you to carry your plates back to your table from the buffet lines, and your waiter is right their to assist you and take the tray away once all your plates and bowls are transferred to the table. The restaurant provides a well written menu at the table of what is offered from the complimentary beverages to enjoy (not just coffee, tea, and water!), but juices, and even a glass of bubbly in addition to the food offerings. There are Cocktails which are additional, but there are plenty of choices that are included with the buffet price. Now onto the food. Sushi, sashimi, made to order handrolls, snow crab clusters, shrimp, and poke are all available. The lines for the handrolls can be a bit long (I skipped it), but they were enjoyed by others in my party. There are servers to help you with the crab and large shrimp. I had to tell him to stop giving me shrimp as he kept placing more of the large cooked shrimp on my plate. Lol. Sauces were all available for me to add onto my plate. Ham, grilled seafoods, Flank steak, prime rib and the whole pig and skin are all there, including a whole roast turkey. I will say the pork was a bit dry and the skin wasn't as crispy as I would have liked, but the rest of the offerings looked amazing. An omelet station with breakfast meats and a Ramen station are also available. We went on a rainy day, and the hot Ramen broth was so nice to have. Finally the dessert station was as wonderful as always (see my picture below). I actually missed the chocolate bread pudding, but as you can see, I had more than enough choices that I was okay with missing one of my favorite buffet desserts. Overview: A super classy and beautiful restaurant overlooking Waikiki Beach. Service was great but food missed the mark. A friend who lives in Waikiki recommended Orchids. We were excited to have an excellent meal at a renowned restaurant. Food: Our food was mediocre. I had the $180 tasting menu including tuna tartare, lasagnette, branzino, tenderloin, and dessert. The tuna tartare was good but not great. The lasagnette was ok (one giant shrimp on some mediocre pasta) The branzino was severely overcooked. The tenderloin was served cold, and it was tough and gristly; the tenderloin never should have left the kitchen, it was that bad. I sent most of the tenderloin back. Dessert was not edible. Very, very disappointing meal. Drinks: good drinks Service: Overall above-average service but not very attentive. When someone refuses to eat a tenderloin and provides negative feedback on the food quality in real time, I'd expect a little more in the area of trying to make it right. For example, when I sent back the tenderloin, the reaction was basically "sorry you didn't like it' and nothing else. My wife ordered the sea bass entrée and was very disappointed with the overcooked and nearly flavorless fish. Ambiance: fantastic, but not enough to bring me back for another meal given the poor food preparation and sub-par food quality Value: Given the very poor quality of the food, Orchids is an extremely poor value. For $180 prix fixe meal, only half of what was served was even average. I rejected the steak and dessert, and we ended up going to another restaurant to finish our dinner. Came here for Sunday brunch for my BIL's 40th birthday. It is one of the most popular brunch destinations on Oahu with beautiful ocean views and a view of diamond head if you walk onto the lawn across from the outside seating area. We had a large party and were seated outside with plenty of room to spread out. The staff were friendly and professional and ensured we had everything we needed. With this brunch there are trays that you take with you to get your food. You place your plates onto the small trays. It was kind of annoying because if you want to place multiple plates on your tray they don't fit very well and then you have to place your plates on the table and the staff take your trays. As far as the brunch goes, there are many options. I think the biggest thing people enjoy are the crab legs and the carving stations. They have multiple carving stations-prime rib, pork, turkey, and more. I do not eat red meat or pork so I enjoyed the turkey breast. Each meat is served along potatoes and veggies. I had carrots with my roast turkey there was also cranberry sauce and gravy. It was very flavorful. They also have a cold deli section with fresh fruit, and salads, olives, and other veggies. There is an omelette station, and a ramen station, they had some chicken sausage and pork sausage behind the omelette station it was kind of hidden, fresh bread and pastries, also a poke station and a sushi station. You can't forget about the large array of desserts! They are known for their coconut cake. I don't like haupia or coconut and a lot of desserts had coconut or haupia. I did enjoy the ice cream station. One of my fave things were the banana muffins! I've been to a lot of fancy brunch locations in the island and outer islands. While this one is at a beautiful location with great views at the beautiful Halekulani, I have had better. I wish there were more veggie and vegetarian options and a pasta station. Also, my omelette wasn't the greatest the cheese wasn't really melted and it fell apart once it was on my plate. My go to for Sunday brunch is at The four seasons which I feel like has more options but not as many carving stations as Orchids and no alcohol included. The price PP is $116 and that includes 2 complimentary glasses of champagne, or sparkling cider, fresh juices, tea, and coffee. Parking is validated. Also one thing to note is that it is extremely hard to get reservations here for any holidays including Mother's Day or Easter you have to book way in advance. read more

Looks for serene and elegant while also maintaining that tropical setting. The staff are all exceptional - waiters, waitresses, chefs, hosts, and servers. This was one of my late brother's favorite restaurants. After enjoying a special lunch in his memory, we can see why he liked it so much. For starters, the service is excellent. You're greeted by everyone, don't have to wait for a menu or to hear the specials and you are served your water and drink orders taken as soon as you are seated. The selection of foods is excellent, from seafood to burgers. Lunch is a two course menu with your choice of a starter and entree. I went with the endive salad and Orchids seafood curry. The salad was about the portion of a house salad. The ingredients nicely complemented each other; endive, arugula and tomatoes with shaved parmesan and a light dressing. The seafood curry was excellent. A nice mix of fish, shrimp and scallop. It came served separately from the jasmine rice and with side condiments; chutney, pineapple and dried coconut. The curry was so good it didn't need any of the condiments and the portion was large enough to get you stuffed. Regardless, I couldn't pass up trying some of my wife's dessert, the panna cotta. Really nicely served with whipped cream, shaved ice, fruit and meringue. The atmosphere is one of the best on the island. We were seated outdoors where you have a view of Diamond Head and Waikiki beach. There's nothing more relaxing than hearing the sound of waves and the feel of the tradewinds. What an absolute lovely experience. A group of ten of us came in for high tea and had the most wonderful time. The service couldn't be beat and the food and tea were delightful. They were spot on with accommodating allergies and preferences. We had someone who was vegan and someone who was allergic to seafood and they made sure they brought out their own plates so nothing even came close to touching things it shouldn't. The orchid vanilla tea was so good! I'm a black tea girl and that one was one of the best I've ever had. It was expensive. Came here to celebrate our anniversary. We booked in advance as the reservations seem to book pretty quickly. I was also told this restaurant was very close to Mama's Fish House in Maui, so was pretty excited as I love Mama's Fish House. This restaurant is located inside the Halekulani hotel. The hotel is fancy and there are signage that indicates appropriate casual elegant attire. To find the restaurant, it depends on where you enter. We didn't enter through the valet entrance, so ended up searching for the restaurant. However, a staff member pointed us in the right direction. You have to pass through the shops inside the hotel, and then you'll see Orchids on your right. You should see signage. There is a spacious and cozy waiting area to the restaurant after you check in, as they will not seat you soomer than your reservation time. You can go to La Mer for drinks, or can wait in the lobby with the fireplace. We did the latter, and the wait wasn't so bad. We were called by the hostess at 6:30pm (the time of our resy). We were seated on the patio, overlooking the ocean, which was nice. It wasn't too hot nor cold. It felt just right. The ambiance and staff = 5. It is a clean and romantic restaurant for sure. Good experience overall. The waiters and servers were all attentive and pleasant. Service was great throughout our dining. No issues there. They actually gave us a slice of coconut chiffon cake on the house for our anniversary, which was nice. The cake was very soft and delicious. I don't even like coconut, but this one was delicious. Then we also got 2 small biscotti pieces to finish off the course. As for the food overall = 3. It's actually a 2, but I gave it a 3 for the artistic plating of each item. Most were so beautifully placed. However, the food did not taste as good as it looked. It was also pretty pricey for what you get also. You're basically paying for the fancy experience. The frutti de mare was very minimal and had a whole ton of taro(?) under it. It was purple in color and tasted very similar to a bland potato, so I'm thinking it was taro. The scallop on this dish was delicious though. Then the hamachi appetizer was also pretty good, although the sea asparagus was salty and not good. The truffle fries were good. The Hawaiian sea bass was cooked appropriately with a butter-caper sauce on the side, but the green pureé was not very good. The prawn and scallop entrèé was... nothing too spectacular. Had focaccia bread under it. The scallops tasted bland. I think the desserts stole the show. The chiffon coconut was good, and so was the hazelnut torte. Food: My oh my, very delicious! The corned beef is made and cooked in house; you can definitely taste the difference between this and Zippy's kine corned beef heehee. Eggs were cooked perfectly as requested (OE) and they must use local eggs cause it was fresh looking like when cracked open. My two finger potatoes were a little under cooked for my tasting, but it wasn't a deal breaker. We also got two Guava Mimosas. The salmon was smoked and they gave more than enough salmon... They aren't cheap and only give two small pieces... Although i didn't order it, juices are freshly squeezed with no added sugars. Service: our waiter was very good! So nice and helpful and very attentive! Water and coffee was always refilled without asking. Awesome awesome service! Ambiance: it was nice! The food was very good and the service as well, but the ambience was lost on multiple parties, who were not dining, taking pictures on the grass area feet away from our table, posing, and talking loudly, thereby interrupting our meal and blocking the oceanfront view. "Casual resort attire. T-shirts acceptable..." lowers the "fine-dining" claim to that of a coffee shop when other guests are wearing shorts, tee-shirts and beach footwear. The best and most expensive Sunday brunch buffet in Hawaii! You will find everything you'd ever wish for, including an omelette station, full spread of sushi and sashimi/poke, and all kinds of shellfish like shrimp, oysters and my favorite, crab legs! Normally carving stations at buffets have dry meats under heat lamps, but here everything is juicy and tender, like suckling pig, prime rib, turkey, and ham. If you're want to fill up on carbs they have pancakes, pastries, toast, etc. Save room for dessert, because you'll have to choose from over a dozen sweets for any taste buds. But what sets this buffet apart is their service. Water and coffee was always filled, empty plates were quickly taken away, and plenty of suggestions if you need them. The view of Diamond Head and the ocean cannot be beat, and they always have great live music, whether on the piano or string/flute. It's expensive but worth the experience. read more

Reservations made two months in advance. Impeccable service from Valet to Servers and everyone in-between. A beautiful property that feels luxurious. At our beachside table, Eddie took excellent care of us. Made to order hand rolls (scallop mayo and spicy something), several kinds of sushi (kanpyo, oshinko, California and inside-out California), sashimi (best salmon we've had in years) and poke offerings (spicy swordfish, shoyu ahi). Chilled snow crab, succulent shrimp cocktail and oysters. Carving offerings: Prime rib, turkey and a whole roasted pig. The roasted potatoes, carrots and brussels sprouts were very tasty as well. There was a flank steak (tough and not delicious) and a tender BBQ brisket. More seafood served hot and scampi style with snow crab, crayfish, clams, mussels and shrimp. None of us got the ramen or omelet (made to order). All of us skipped the fruit and salads as well. The seabass was over seasoned, but the incredible waffles made up for it. You order from your server things like Belgian waffles, pancakes, eggs benedict, sausage and bacon. Most of the dessert offerings were mediocre or not tasty. The humidity destroyed a lot of them. Not to be missed - the chocolate bread pudding (made from croissants!) and the ice cream! It has been years of wanting to experience this wonderful brunch. Sunday brunch buffet in Waikiki, Honolulu, Hawaii... When my cousin from San Francisco wanted to throw an early birthday party for my mom, I gathered the female cousins quickly. Two cousins would be off-island, but the rest were able to attend! We were all excited to go to Orchids at the Halekulani Hotel for the Sunday Brunch. I had heard great things about it but had never been. One cousin asked if valet service was free. Yes... However, we should leave a tip. Our reservation was changed by the hotel to a later time... 12:30pm... and brunch ends at 2:30pm... We made the time limit, and the staff was nice to not rush us out when we went a bit over... because some people wanted to stay a bit and chat. It was a fun event for me because of the variety of offerings. From sushi station, poke station, and omelet bar to carving stations (ham, turkey, suckling pig, brisket, and prime rib), salad bar, bread table, and dessert bar vs. Ice cream station... everything was fresh, colorful, and delicious! Service was friendly, polite, and welcoming! I did take a couple of trays of used plates to the bussing station because our large group was challenging. Haha! We have some foodies who liked to debate - for example: is the Mango sorbet better than the vanilla ice cream? Both are made in-house! I think it's a good idea to just try it and experience it for yourself. The open-air ambiance with views of the ocean and Diamond Head make it special! Reserved brunch a month in advance and was absolutely stunning! Beautiful restaurant on the beach with beautiful views. The seafood is very fresh and loved everything -- oysters, crab legs, sushi. The ramen was good but some broths were overly salty for my preference. The fish of the day was excellent and had multiple orders of that! Our waitress was very attentive and submitted our hot orders when we were ready (eggs Benedict, waffles, pancakes). The desserts all looked delicious so tried them all! Overall, for the quality and experience for an all you can eat brunch buffet, this is worth the price. Highly recommend! read more

The Sunday Brunch Buffet at Orchids is well known for being extravagant, high priced, and where you go to once in a while to treat yourself, family, or friends. But it's getting very high priced. Is it worth it? Orchids is located in the Halekulani Hotel in Waikiki, along Kalia Road. The parking garage is actually across from the hotel with the entrance ramp on your left side, at the end of the street, right before the Sheraton Waikiki loading dock. There's free 4-hour validation, which is nice. Or you can do valet. The inside is large with an open air atmosphere, views of Diamond Head, and seatings next to the beach, which is nice. The service was good and very attentive. With multiple servers assisting our sections--one was friendly and cheerful, one was quite attentive, and the other was just there (no words spoken besides "refill?"). The price is shooting up like crazy though. 11 months ago, the cost was $85. A few months ago, $105. Now I saw a photo, it's $135!! Yikes! I mean, it's a $50 increase within a year. Getting a little steep. Glad I was there when it was still $105. Any Kama'aina or senior discount? NOPE. Hmph! Help us out...a little bit? Especially if it's $135/person. When you take a step back and see what the buffet offers, it's basically (a lot of) desserts and pastries, salad bar, limited sushi bar, seafood bar, basic ramen bar, an omelette station, multiple meat stations, and made to order eggs Benedict, waffle, and pancakes. That's basically it. There's really no main or (savory and salty) starch items. Outside of desserts and baked items, and meat, there's not a whole lot of variety. The setup was a little confusing. The dessert station is right in front of the meat stations, so it can be crowded. The breakfast meats is literally hidden behind the omelette station. There's no flow, so it's basically a free-for-all. For meat and seafood lovers, this is great! The carving stations had prime rib, baked ham, bbq brisket, whole suckling pig, roasted turkey, fresh oysters, shrimp cocktail, snow crab legs, salmon/ahi poke, and etc. It was a nice experience. Beautiful views and comfortable atmosphere. Good service. The food was on-par for a buffet. Nothing extraordinary, nothing terrible. But for that price point, I expect the food to be a little bit better. I felt everything was quite simple and light. The meats barely had any salt or seasonings (especially the suckling pig), the ramen was light, hollandaise on the Benedict was bland, sushi was super basic, the nori on the hand rolls were not crispy, poke was firm and slightly under seasoned, crab legs were not meaty or sweet. My favorites were the fresh oysters and shrimp. Really nice sized and fresh! Overall, at $105/person, I'd say it's worth it. But going to $135? Whoa... Careful you don't get too high cause the next step is over $150. Don't want to get too nuts here. Inflation rate slowed down in 2023, so the increase from $85 to $135 within a year is startling. read more

This is a setting that is not possible to duplicate. You have the island tradewind breezes. There is the sound and smell of the ocean yards away. Tree framed views of vessels and people in the water, and a picture postcard profile view of Diamond Head across the way. Reason enough to come. Breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea, dinner, and a weekend or holiday brunch. Breakfast and lunch are just okay. The dishes sometimes seem to ambitious and out of place. Afternoon tea is wonderful, if you shoosh away the persistent sparrows. Dinner, when the sun is going down is a wonderful setting. Brunch, the best in Honolulu, is what you want to experience. We went to Orchids for dinner to celebrate our wedding anniversary. The food and service were impeccable. I love Orchids and Halekulani. We sat on the lanai and were able to see Diamond Head and the sunset. We were amazing that there were not flies, bugs, or birds flying around because it's an open dining space. read more

Haven't been here for maybe over a decade. The food was good, parking reasonable and yes I love that it comes w 2 flutes of champagne for brunch and bottomless fruit juices like pineapple. I think the quality of the food may have declined but don't get me wrong continues to be a delicious bounty with something for everyone (multiple carving stations for meats, seafood galore, and sushi and desserts by the table full). Also note some things have to be ordered like benedicts and waffles as well as plain rice and warm butter for the crab. Where this place stands out and has always stood above most is the service. From the greater to every waiter, server, and bus boy - just plenty of aloha and very efficient. Mix of pateons (hotel guests and locals) was expected from a local buffet. But never felt crowded. Enjoyed views of the ocean and garden as we were seated on the patio (we had a pretty big group). The only hangup I had was not knowing what I should serve myself vs ask for help like the ginger by the sushi and the horse radish/aujus by the prime rib. read more

Our dining experience at Orchids restaurant was one of the worst dining episodes we have experienced here on Oahu. As Kama'aina, we are well aware that is a wonderful variety of places to celebrate an occasion as special as my wife's birthday. However, everything from the incredibly insensitive welcome... to the table service... to the lackluster menu was less-than-acceptable. To start the dining experience, we were very disappointed when the hostess said "Happy early birthday" to my wife, when it was, in fact, her actual birthday; of course, this is not "bad," but more of an oversight and clearly indicative of having an improperly trained, less-than-hospitable staff. But wait: there's more! It got worse from there as the hostess sat us at literally the worst possible table, directly next to the coffee grinding station, in the furthest, most remote area of the restaurant, despite the restaurant being practically empty at the time. Importantly, we arrived at the hostess station at exactly 12:00 noon, which was the time of our scheduled reservation. They purposely sat us here despite full knowledge of the fact that we were celebrating my wife's birthday. I was incredulous! Ultimately, they did move us to the opposite side of the restaurant to a better location. From there, however, the dining experience went further downhill. The soggy bruschetta was absolutely unacceptable. It was obvious that the dish was prepared well in advance and likely sat on a shelf in the kitchen, waiting to be served to unsuspecting guests. Any entry level cook or chef knows that you don't add the Tomato topping onto the bread until the last possible minute. But, alas, many people here in Hawaii have never had properly prepared bruschetta, and they don't realize that it does not have to be soggy, soiled with the juice from the tomatoes. The potato gnocchi actually made my wife physically ill; seriously... it almost ruined the day. But wait... there's even MORE! There was a giant strand of blonde hair in the bread basket, and we ended up receiving the tasteless dinner rolls instead. Orchids apparently "ran out of" the French bread that originally came with the meal. I must say that the spinach salad was the highlight of the meal. Unfortunately, my wife's birthday lunch was definitely a most UN-enjoyable experience. Interestingly, the following day, we enjoyed an absolutely wonderful meal at "House Without a Key." When comparing the two restaurants, the dining experience was essentially as different as night and day. The staff was much more attentive, the food was absolutely stellar, and we will definitely go back to "House Without a Key." On the other hand, we will continue to share the horrible experience we had at Orchids with all of our local and distant friends. It was a horrible, disenchanting experience.
