Loved this FREE event at a gorgeous North Liberty park. Recognized some familiar names on the…read morevending and music lineups and figured I'd make the drive from Marion to support my friends. I knew it was a longstanding community event, but didn't realize the scope of production that goes into it. The stage is MASSIVE and they had some really cool artists performing throughout the day. There was plenty of room to set up a blanket or chair, sip your beer, and enjoy the music. (It did start to fill up quickly in anticipation of the last two acts, so grab your spot early!) There were stations with fans blowing cool mists, free ice water tanks, and a few places to get out of the sun. The Blues & BBQ sign is a great photo opp. In addition to the beer tent by the stage, there were about ten vendors or so offering a variety of sips and bites. A little something for everyone, including multiple bbq options, tacos, shaved ice, and ice cream. I know the beer tent is a big factor in keeping this free, so it would be great if there was more than one non-alch option (and ideally root beer wouldn't be the same price as a beer - say $4 or $5 instead of $7). All in all, really great community event. I heard a rumor the park is being renovated to add shade and other amenities, so next year there will not be a festival. I'm sure it'll come back bigger and better than ever!

All musical acts were awesome and were so fun to listen to in front of the stage or out about the park. Inflatables and other park equipment for kids to climb and a good amount of shaded seating for everyone to enjoy. The food truck options keep growing so anyone can find something they like. I like to go sometime earlier in the day and then come back later to hear the final show, all while trying some good brisket or pulled pork.

The seating in the theater consists of couches, love seats, big comfy chairs and some table/chair combos making it feel like you're watching the play from your living room. They also have a small concession area in the lobby where you can purchase drinks (non alcoholic, beer and wine) and snacks to enjoy while watching the show. It's community theater so you need to keep in mind that a lot of the actors are still developing their craft and with this performance in particular there were several children, but overall I really enjoyed the performances. One of the coolest things about Giving Tree though is that for every production they put on, the actors decide on a charity and they donate a portion of the proceeds to that charity--hence the name Giving Tree Theater. I will definitely be getting tickets to Peter and the Starcatcher in Feb/March.

What they did have was generally pretty impressive, the Grant Wood collection was surprisingly beautiful. The Roman section had some great historic items as well. There's as a large focus on local Iowa artists, and a lot of landscape works at the moment at least. Plenty of free parking in the area on weekdays, I saw a garage too but don't know the situation. Staff is friendly and helpful. Definitely worth checking out. Building is old and pretty cool.

The building is large and spacious inside, with windows lining many of the dance classrooms. Parking is great as well. On our first attempt, we attended a work outing in the mezzanine area that got rained out after the 1st inning. Super disappointing. (Normally if the game is rained out, ticket holders are able to return for the rescheduled game. But they took our tickets when we entered the mezzanine.) This area has a great view from right field and groups can enjoy complimentary food and beverage throughout the game. Luckily, the other day I won a set of tickets from work and it turned out to be a beautiful evening so we were able to enjoy the entire game. The stadium is super clean and comfortable. Walking around the concessions area seems a little crowded but sitting never seems as full. (Typical minor leagues game.) There's plenty of free parking around the stadium, even after the game has started, and getting out isn't an absolute nightmare especially because the crowds clear out as the game goes on. Concession stand pricing is inflated as usual, but they seem to offer specials on a regular basis. Tickets are super affordable. All around it's a great option for cheap, wholesome fun!

I visited this bar for karaoke on a Friday night and am very unimpressed by the karaoke hosts and…read morethe way they managed their system: Here are the issues: 1. The announcer was intoxicated: A rule of thumb for karaoke hosts is to always be aware and able to run karaoke to the best of their ability. After several drinks, the KJ was noticeably under the influence and being rude while interrupting karaoke singers. He may have thought he was being funny, but it came across to me as rude and unappreciative of the singers. 2. The announcer would interrupt songs with commentary: The KJ would frequently interrupt the singers (on his mic) with commentary and jokes. I found this extremely disrespectful to the singers. It was distracting to the singers, the audience, and made me feel uncomfortable. 3. The announcer was rude to me directly: During one song, he started laughing and made a comment of "well if you were to do it right". I know he somehow meant it as a joke, but I was embarrassed and that was completely uncalled for. At the end of the night, he restated he appreciated me coming out and hopes that I'd return, but as a KJ myself, there are things you just don't do when running karaoke. Being sober and able to make good judgments, respecting people when it's their time to shine, and being courteous to those around you are essential. This will be my first and last time visiting the Red Lion Lounge.
