I haven't been to the theatre in years, and was so happy when my boyfriend surprised me with tickets to see Carrie. The show was ABSOLUTELY amazing! We loved the dancing, acting, singing, props, ALL of it! TCR also has fun cups you can purchase with themed beverages to bring in while you watch the show which was a really nice touch. When we suggested theatre camp to my 9 year old son and 10 year old step-daughter, they were both scared of the idea of camp. When my son found out one of the camps was going to be focused on songs from Frozen, he was even less excited about the prospect. We ended up signing them up for Jurassic Park Improv, as well as the Into The Unknown camp that was focused on Frozen songs. By the end of the first day, my son was belting out Frozen songs on the car ride home. My step-daughter had to miss the first day, and came to the car virtually in tears after day two of Jurassic Park Improv, because she "didn't get a turn in the freeze game," which is a game that you actually put yourself into. So, your only obstacle to getting a turn is your own shyness. By the time we picked the kids up on day three, we couldn't even guess what they did, because they were both excitedly talking over each other a mile a minute. We stayed to watch the final day of Jurassic Park Improv, and attended the final performance of Into The Unknown. My step-daughter put herself into the freeze game so many times that day that we were worried the other kids would get mad at her, and my son enthusiastically sang and danced to Frozen songs with reckless abandon. We were thrilled with the growth that they both displayed over that week. Both camps had the same two counselors, although it seemed like Bree took the lead for Jurassic Park Improv and Katey took the lead for Into The Unknown. Both counselors were absolutely incredible. When I told my son I planned to contact Theatre Cedar Rapids to tell them Bree and Katey did a fantastic job, he gave me side eye, and said "fantastic" in an annoyed tone. Worrying that I had misjudged how much he liked the came, I asked him what was wrong with the word "fantastic," and he said "I would say super duper fantastic." He even thanked his step-mom unprompted for signing him up for the camps even though he hadn't wanted to go, because he had a lot of fun. He also told me "If Bree is doing a camp, you don't even have to say anymore. I know it'll be good." These two camps were an out of this world experience for our kids! read more

Haven't been to TCR since I was a kid. Then my boyfriend and I went to Elf last night and it. Was. Amazing. My personal favorite was Santa, but EVERYONE - including Buddy the Elf and all the kids (elves) were just awesome. We can't wait to go to another show there. I've been here several.times and I like the venue. Small and comfortable with not a bad seat in the house. The addition of the Linge lounge adjacent makes for a nice place yo eait for the show while you enjoy a beverage. There's alcohol as well as non-alcoholic selections. They also have snacks to enjoy during the show. The only thing that can be a challenge is parking. However there is a parking ramp next yo it and the bank across the street offer a their parking lot for events. read more

There's amazing local talent in CR, as well as Eastern Iowa. This is a great place to see these individuals in action. I've seen everything from "Little Shop of Horrors," "The Rocky Horror Picture Show," "Hair," to "White Christmas." A wonderful date night, night out with friends and more. TCR is showing cinema classics on select Tuesdays! The film is shown in the theater and is very reasonably priced. We saw Roman Holiday with Gregory Peck and Audry Hepburn on Valentine's Day, and they are also showing Footloose, the Indiana Jones series, Annie, Goldfinger and Some Like It Hot in this series that is scheduled to run through June. Theatre Cedar Rapids is a top notch community theater organization - being a starting place for Ron Livingston of "Office Space" and Michael Emerson of "Lost" - this is one of the largest community theater organizations in the country. The building itself, The Iowa Theater originally built in 1928, has been reborn to its original beauty after the flood of 2008 - respecting its rich history of shows, including the performance of "The Philadelphia Story" with Katherine Hepburn in 1940. The Grand ReOpening in February of 2010 featured a myriad of local performance celebrities in a raucous performance of Mel Brooks, "The Producers". The increased lobby space, addition of Linge Lounge, and catering by Zins are great enhancements to an evening spent at this community landmark. Amazing look after the flood renovations, I personally helped with those renovations so I know great work went into a great place. Modern all through out now but a classic fell still as well, and for the fair price per show I've never seen a bad one. Nice place. Good service. Fast at the concessions during the break. The show I went to the sound was imbalanced. It was a musical and the band was too loud. it was hard to hear the actors singing or speaking. I was in the balcony, just left of center, second row. The real problem though with this theater are the seats. The rows are too close together. I'm 6 ft with long legs and my knees got banged all night by the peeps in front shifting in their seats. Very uncomfortable. Otherwise, a good place. Nicely done up, good service and high quality performers. So in summary it was a mixed bag for me. read more

It is excellent to see a community theater such as TCR not only come back, but thrive after the devastating flood. It has been a focal point of the revitalization of downtown Cedar Rapids. The performances are well produced. And you have to remind yourself that the actors are simply people from the community. Ticket purchase is easy through the website. As expected, the snacks and drinks sold are pricy. The overall atmosphere and experience is excellent. The theater is not massive, which adds to the experience as you can feel the players and their emotion. read more
