2 years later, I am back and the experience was just as great as the last time! Friendly, non-pushy staff. They have a massive inventory and it is all well organized. They have cheap in-house frames as well as designer frames. In-house frame is a cheaper package as you save on both the frame and lens. Regular lens are $80 and the better, smudgeproof and less distorted Nikon lens are $160. Another thing to appreciate is that all the frame prices are written on the lens, and not hidden. While we were doing our paperwork, another staff member comes and serves me a glass of water. Was told that the glasses will be ready for pick-up in 3-4 days and today was a Sunday. This store is IT. What is it, you may ask? Let me tell you: The level of customer service. Every, and I mean EVERY employee I've ever dealt with here greeted me with a smile and a friendly hello. They have these little tote bags that have a small bottle of lense cleaner, a glasses screwdriver that is a keychain as well, and lense cloth in them. How much you ask? FREE. Absolutely FREE. Every time you go in. It's not free with an eye appointment, it's just FREE. The staff know their stuff and will take all the time you need to help you find the prescription frames you need or sunglasses. Both of you ask nicely (just kidding, it helps, but they'll do it regardless because they're just that awesome!). I recently got a couple pairs of prescription glasses from them and Gigi, Richard, Cherry and Linh all helped me out. They are all so nice. I asked a lot of questions and was a bit of a pain, and they didn't care. They brought me COLD WATER. Get out of town. You know when you buy something and love the item but not the store? No risk of that here. If you're their boss and are considering giving them all a big fat raise, consider this the review the evidence you were looking for to do it!! Staff is very friendly, and Dr. Eng is extremely knowledgeable. Dr. Eng was very patient with me, didn't rush, and is a clear and effective communicator. Aside from the actual exam, my overall experience was just "ok" -- maybe slightly disappointing. Except for Amy's hospitality and Dr. Eng's knowledge, there isn't much that entices me to come back. They have gotten expensive, and I'm concerned about their transparency. My last exam in July 2019 cost me $85 at Optical Thirty8. In November 2021, the exam cost me 29% more ($110). I would have been ok with this bump if they provided additional information or measurements (could have addressed the below....) Moreover, I chose Optical Thirty8 because they historically provided my partner with her PD measurement (without having to purchase glasses). They have been reluctant to provide me with my PD measurement during every exam. Instead, most recently, they deflected the request by politely telling me that they won't provide a PD because of liability concern. Specifically, if their PD measurement is off, and I "fall down the stairs because of a headache or dizziness", that they are liable for the bad PD measurement. (?) Clearly, the salesperson (Amy's colleague) was grasping at straws, and felt the need to misinform me due to the top-down culture at the store. It's a shame because, otherwise, they've been a pleasure to deal with. (I get it... From a business perspective, if I purchase glasses online and not from Optical Thirty8, why would they supply me with information that enables me to purchase from their competitors. Unfortunately, I have a very limited budget to purchase glasses, and access to this information is in my best interest. While they are reluctant to provide this information, some optometrists are happy to look out for the patient instead... I'd rather be a patron to optometrists that look towards their patients' best interest.) I'll be switching back to my old optometrist. Now that Optical Thirty8 is no longer competitive against them, and they aren't willing to provide PD measurements (unlike my former optometrist), there really isn't much to separate them from other optometry shops. read more

Who would have thought I'd be reviewing an optical store, much less giving it a 5/5?! On Friday night I was playing with my dog and he inadvertently kicked me in the eyeball. It stung for a few minutes, but then was generally ok. I did not sleep at all that night. My eye got really red, and it felt like something was stuck in my eye. I called these guys the moment they opened up, and they said while they were full, if I came in they would try to fit me in. After about 20m of waiting, I was called in by Dr. Fung. She gave me a thorough exam and let me know that my cornea was scratched. And because it was an injury, OHIP covered it. I came back 48 hours later for a check up with Dr. Patrick, who was increidbly nice. He took the time to make sure I understood what had happened, how much had healed, and what to look out for. And again - covered by OHIP. All-in-all, I had a very pleasant experience with this (local) business, and will be buying sunnies from them once summertime hits. read more

This is definitely a shop to recommend for prescription eye glasses! I went to many shops along queen street to try to get one with nice quality but reasonable price. I did not find a really perfect one for me until I went into optical 8. Sam was there, he was super nice and helpful.He firstly gave me a guide for different brands in store.When I told him that I need one pair of glasses about $150. He introduced many with price about 120, 160, and 220. (Plus another $60 for lenses). After explaining everything clearly, He leave me enough time for myself to look around and try everything until I pick some final frames to choose from.He offered me some helpful suggestions, and helped me made my final decision so that I am able to choose the perfect one for myself, which is about $128+$60=188. He also offers me the free trial contact lenses and beautiful glasses case. Last but not the least, he understand that I need to have eye glasses ready as soon as possible so he made them for me in about one hour. And also told me that if I have insurance, I can claim the insurance reimbursement with my receipt as well. The sales people were super friendly and completely flexible with my Union insurance plan. I was able to negotiate even a better price than the price quoted. Though I am still waiting for my glasses, I felt the service to this point was exceptional. This is why I only gave it a 4 star out of 5. I look forward to my glasses. I broke my glasses in half, right before heading off to Italy for my three weeks vacation, and I'm blind as a bat without my glasses so it would've been impossible to make the journey, let alone enjoy it if I ever landed. In a desperate search - I went to Lenscrafters, Hakim, Walmart, some random stores in various malls to get it fixed or even pick out a new frame and transfer the glasses into them. None of them were able to help me. with my non-refundable flight booked the day after next - I was ready to shell out any amt $ to get a new pair of eyeglasses and hop on the plane. I called this store because this Yelp review was on top of Google results. I managed to get into the store an hour before it closed thinking they would not able to help me. But they said it would take..20 mins to cut the current prescription glasses and fit it into a new frame. Just 20 minutes. That's what it took to save my expensive non-refundable vacation I had been planning for a year. It took longer to choose the frame than to fit the glasses into them.. Walked in just to inquire about fixing my sunglasses (which I bought from a different store), as I had lost the screw to one of the arms. A different store had quoted $2-$7 depending on the glasses. The individual I spoke to said no problem, fixed it in about 3min flat, and said no charge. Super friendly service! He brought my glasses back and said 'good news and bad news. Good news is it's fixed. Bad news is it looks different than the other side.' Scared me for a moment but I'm just relieved they're fixed! As I walked in to collect my glasses on Saturday, I tried to figure out whether they were worth 4 or 5 stars. I was going to try to be strict and hard nosed and give 4; but they were just so incredibly pleasant again that I'm stuck with 5 stars and looking very soft! My "good" glasses lost a screw, and after dropping it in an attempt to repair them and spending an hour crawling around the floor, I decided that I was probably due a new pair anyway. It's been too long-4 years!-since my last eye exam so that needed to be done too. I emailed a few places to ask about rates and appointments but they either didn't answer or were charging $120+ for an eye exam. Things weren't looking good. Then I spotted a Groupon for Optical Thirty 8 offering $150 off the price of frames for $19. Sounded tempting. From the very first contact, I was impressed. I submitted a query about exams and pricing via the contact form and got a response in under 24hrs. GiGi answered all my stupid questions and I booked my eye exam for the following Sunday and bought my Groupon. Exams are $75 but you can manage to get a free exam if you're spending over $198 (at the moment). They called to confirm ahead of time and suggested that I could come in early to look in case my pupils were dilated afterwards! I arrived just 5 minutes before to a warm welcome. I filled out a medical intake form and they took my old broken glasses to figure out the old prescription. Then it was time for the optometrist. I had Shala Lakhani who was absolutely lovely, knowledgeable and super efficient. Once I'd tried to figure out whether option 1 or 2 was better for each lens (I never know!), it was off to choose new frames. I generally hate choosing frames. It seems so daunting and I get confused. I also get sick of looking at my face after trying on a few pairs. Luckily, Elan was a joy and super patient. Between the two of us, we picked a pair that I really like and it wasn't too astronomically expensive after the Groupon. Lenses with the standard coatings (pretty much everything) were $88. While I'd been in my exam they'd fixed my old glasses so I trotted off with them and some free cleaning spray and wipes. Hurrah! My glasses were ready the next weekend and they made a courtesy call to confirm that. Elan remembered me when I walked in and somebody also presented me with a cup of tea the minute I sat down. The fit was perfect but they said to pop back for any adjustments or repairs and I got even more cleaning spray and wipes. Rubbing them on your sweater is not a good thing, apparently. Who knew? So couldn't really give them less than 5. Every single person was incredibly pleasant, they gave me tea, the exams aren't a rip off and they have some lovely glasses. 5 stars it is. read more

This place is amazing. In a pinch, they were able to replace my lenses in an emergency. Let it be known that they kept the store open past closing to finish my lenses and put them in the same day. The staff has changed, but the service is still excellent with no pressure. Narma and Eddie are great and I stop by from time to time to get their complementary frame adjustments which is great because I am sometimes rough with my glasses. They have expanded their selection with both high-end luxury brands, some cool fashion-forward brands from Asia and Europe, and their budget-friendly own line. They have an impressive selection of RayBans including the latest models. So there is something for everyone and for the whole family. They often have great promotions from time to time. Two have been filtered out for whatever reasons but they are spot on in terms of the great customer service, employee friendliness, time efficiency and end product. I bought a $19 GroupOn valued at $150 in prescription sunglasses and am very pleased with my purchase. Given a case, cleaning cloth and lens cleaner at no extra cost too. Was told it would take two weeks for my order to complete and within a week, my glasses were ready. Staff are accommodating and polite in every sense. I would shop here again! read more

I just wanted to highly recommend this incredibly friendly and well-priced optical shop. First off, I have to say the staff go out of their way to be cheerful, welcoming, and helpful. They're also pretty reasonable, and it's not the typical upsell experience that feels more like a car dealership. All of their lenses include all the standard coatings without extra charge. Frames range widely in price from house-brand to name-brand...lots of specials on their website. I purchased Rayban single-vision glasses and with the addition of a $15 Groupon for $150 off, I managed to get them for about $220 frames, lenses, coatings, etc. It was actually cheaper than I could get the same pair for online. I could have come in closer to the $150 mark for house-brand glasses all in. Make sure you're aware of deals. In addition to the Groupon deal, they had a deal for $100 off if you had an eye exam, and some flat rate packages for house frames. Not combinable of course. Eye exams are $75. That wasn't my favorite part as it felt rather rushed and a bit factory-like. One tip: look at glasses before having your eyes dilated. I was pretty blind after that, so had to make another trip to finalize my selection. Free contact lens fitting, although they didn't really do any fitting...just gave me a trial pair. Their prices are a bit higher than what I can find online, so I may hold off on buying contacts through them. Dr. Hughes was very informative and very friendly, the stuffs are very helpful too on chosing the frame unlike other optical services they make me feel like they're rushing me to pick a frame and they're not very helpful. Here in optical thirty 8 they want you to take your time to pick your frames and suggest what kind of frames will look better on you. I went here two days ago and I was so happy that I came here. I really needed a short-notice eye exam because I lacked both contacts and glasses. Basically, I couldn't see that day and could not contact my Optometrist because she moved without telling me and took the records with her. Optical Thirty 8 was more than accommodating. They took me on such short notice and the service was amazing. Here are the key things I want to address: 1. Norma, who answered the phone, was super nice. She gave me water while I waited. 2. My doctor (Dr. Hughes) was super thorough. I find it hard to believe the other reviews stating that eye exams here are not thorough. There was no rush and he even double checked to make sure he was not overcorrecting. 3. After the exam, Brandon helped me choose glasses. He was very patient and friendly. He also ordered the contacts that I needed and gave me a trial pair. He was great. Charmaine was also very friendly and accommodating. 4. The atmosphere is super chill and they have a good selection of glasses. Overall, experience was fantastic. This is the best optical I have ever been to and I cant wait to go back. read more

Really enjoyed my experience here !! I also got my eye exam done here and I found the optometrist to be very friendly and informative. I went here to get glasses, and they were so super patient with me, and in the end I got dailies contact lenses instead, and they were still super friendly and patient with me. Their prices are better than online for contacts, I got half a years worth for $160, and they help with the rebates and everything. They let me try out 3 different lens brands for a couple days each to find ones that didn't dry out my picky eyeballs, and even gave me 10 days worth for free for my vacation because the rest wouldn't come in before I left (they do have fast shipping but I left this till the 2nd last day before vaca). I have gone here for two consecutive years to get my checkup/prescription for my contacts/glasses. Both times, the staff were very nice and accomodating. They even offer you water in the waiting area. The last time I went was a month ago. My optometrist was Dr Diana Yu. She was very nice and gave me a lot of tips to keep my eyes healthy and how to prevent infections from wearing my contacts. I forgot to ask for an official receipt and had to call today to ask for one. They gave me no difficulty at all and they will send it to me via e-mail. Definitely recommend. read more

Disclaimer: I haven't bought glasses here before. However, I have used their services. I bought a pair of plastic (acetate frames) from a different chain that shall remained unnamed during a great sale. Let's called them Store A. Store A added in titanium nose pads at an additional charge since glasses slide off my face without them. When I got my glasses, I noticed they hadn't removed the plastic bits that would normally serve as the nose pad. As a result, the titanium ones couldn't be adjusted further in for me. I tried to get used to them as it but I would get headaches wearing them. Enter Optical Thirty 8 which was suggested to me after lamenting to my friend about how unhappy my new glasses. I spoke with the staff who were all extremely helpful. I was able to leave it with them and I think Paul (their technician/optician) took them and was able to shave it down for me. He polished it up very nicely. They did warn me that they would have to remove the titanium pads and reinstall with some glue so the hold might not be as good. My glasses feel great now and everything looks great. they only charged me a small fee. Probably the next place to get glasses, especially since they have a wide selection of plastic frames with asian fit. read more
