Couple of years ago we purchased a fairly large house on the hill with five bathrooms, reason we got a good deal on the house was because it needed some TLC. I can't express how good it feels to finally have five remodeled bathrooms, all of which were remodeled by this Small boutique Company name Open Hand, which I grew to love during the process of the renovations. Some of the work needed plans and structural support for the reconfiguration of the previous bathroom layout, we were impressed with the systematic daily routine, and with the rotation of handling five bathrooms on one house, without interfering with our lifestyle in the way that was not communicated upfront. We hired Open Hand Remodeling to do an update on our house. It was really important for us to find a partner in this process. This is our first home and thus was our first home renovation. We consider ourselves pretty hands on and design savvy so we were looking for a company that would allow us to have heavy input but also guide us on the realities of construction. We also wanted a partner who understood the importance of retaining the charm and quality of our untouched 1932 Spanish bungalow. We found all of this in Open Hand and in particular with Smadar, our general contractor. Our remodel included: complete rebuild of kitchen, new bath, refinishing the original hardwood floors, buildout of outdoor kitchen, new fence and additional landscaping. We are so happy with how the house turned out! And the process was all in all really pleasant. Smadar had great communication and we always felt in the loop and up to speed. Being that we are really particular about all the design details, we definitely gave Smadar a bit of a headache I'm sure but she always listened to what we wanted and helped us find a way to make it happen! We completely gutted the inside of our 2000 square foot home and we were fortunate to have Smadar and Open Hand Remodeling by our side. Our home was built in 1942 and the previous owners did not do any major updates. We remodeled our kitchen, knocked down some walls, converted a flat roof into a pitched roof, bathrooms, floors...you name it!!! They told us it would take 3 months and IT TOOK 3 MONTHS. We have heard horror stories about broken promises and we were nervous about choosing the right contractor. We interviewed at least 10 contractors. Each encounter seemed like a speed dating interview and it felt so overwhelming. We saw it all! My wife and I felt a good connection with Smadar from the get-go​. We appreciated her attention to detail when she first came to our home. She really listened to us and actually took measurements and notes (unlike most other contractors). Our decision to choose OHR was not based on pricing. We did not want to choose the lowest bidder. On a scale of 1-10, OHR was a 6. They were not the cheapest or the most expensive. We found OHR on Yelp, and after meeting several other contractors, we decided to go with OHR because we felt a good connection with Smadar and the quote was reasonable. We had the following work done: living room and foyer addition to the front of the house, install a see-through fireplace, relocate home-garage entrance, legalize existing master suite, and re-roof entire house. Smadar estimated 3 months for the work to be completed, and the work was done in exactly 3 months, even with some weather delays and additional scope. We were most impressed when Smadar had the crew lined up and ready to pour the concrete foundation in immediately after the inspector gave us the green light - just in time for the rain to hit later that evening. We were so sure it was getting delayed until the following week due to the rain! It's so important to have a project manager with good communication, and Smadar was exactly that. Everyone's shocked that our work was completed within the estimated time. OHR is not going to string you along! I'll start off by saying that my partner and I purchased our home five years ago, very well knowing that it was a MAJOR fixer-upper. Nothing-but-dirt front yard, asphalted backyard, old plumbing, old electrical, and a leaky roof, just to mention a few of the issues we knew of. Over the past five years we've worked with at least three different "contractors," always friends of friends, or referrals of coworkers, that we chose because we were always choosing the lowest priced bid. Then we finally came to meet Essi from Open Hand Remodeling while getting bids for our bathroom remodel. From the beginning, the professionalism demonstrated by Essi was very much appreciated, and his courteous manner in handling all of our issues and questions was absolutely impeccable. It was a breath of fresh air to meet a REAL contractor that stood behind what he said. In the past we had always received bids from other "contractors" that would change constantly throughout the construction process of whatever project they were working on at the time. We did an extensive remodel with open hand about 18 months ago. The project was managed very well by Moshe and he had top quality people, especially the tiler who was able to install concrete tiles really beautifully. The floor installers were also excellent. We were assertive about ensuring the finished were perfect, especially our fire place. Moshe and his team always worked to meet our requirements even though it meant doing extra coats, polishes, finishes, etc. I have recommended open hand several times on next door. I always tell people that they were not the cheapest contractor we met with, but they were also not the most expensive. We got top quality work far far above the 'flipped' look you see so often in NELA. 18 month on the work has lasted beautifully too and we have had no issues with anything. read more

We hired Open Hand Remodeling to convert our garage to a studio space at the recommendation of a friend and we were so glad we did! Smadar was the project manager and an absolute pleasure to work with. It ended being a bigger job than we thought because of structural issues with the garage, but Smadar kept us informed and in the loop every step of the way. We had to do some extensive retrofitting, remove a large tree that was causing structural damage, and level out the entire structure (due to the tree root damage) and Smadar brought in an engineer to asses and make sure everything was done to code. We added a patio door and a window, insulation and a mini split AC unit. The whole crew was great - detail oriented, through, and organized. Smadar was on site and sent us texts at the end of every work day to keep us updated. I honestly expected the remodel to be more stressful (especially in these covid times, where delays are expected) but everything went so smoothly from start to finish. The scope of the project was a complete kitchen remodel that included gutting the old kitchen, re-plastering all of the walls, fabrication and installation of new cabinets, counter, sink and floor, hiding exposed pipes, adding & moving gas lines plus electrical for new lights. It cost close to $30,000. When I hired this company, based on positive Yelp reviews and on Angie's List, I had high hopes for a reasonably pleasant experience and professional service during my kitchen remodel. Unfortunately, I was sorely disappointed. "Hassle Free" home remodeling was NOT my experience. Given the dates of other positive reviews they seem to have concentrated their efforts keeping their other clients happy, to the detriment of my project. Since writing a lengthy, negative review on Angie's List the owner of the company contacted me to apologize for their failure to deliver as promised. I appreciate that, but it doesn't change the overall experience. Hopefully my review will serve as a wake-up call for this company to keep a closer eye on quality control. In short, these are my chief complaints: -Poor craftsmanship on par with a cut-rate service instead of the upper-middle range service that I paid for. -Poor communication between the manager (Mike), contractor and workers . -Company's insistence that sub-par, sloppy workmanship was "standard." -Unreliability in terms of workers arriving on time for scheduled deliveries or for a full day of work. -The job took far too long, close to 6 months instead of the promised 3 to 5 weeks. -Contract not fulfilled as promised but as convenient to company. I gave the company 2 stars or a grade of 'D', because in the end the kitchen was pretty much finished (I had to do some finishing and touch-ups myself) and at least I didn't have to take them to court, which is something I started worrying about near the end. read more

I've been wanting to paint my 2.5 bedroom home for about a year before I finally brought myself to do something about it. Lets just say I had a few not so great experiences with people working on my house before. I heard of these guys from a friend of mine. The guys did a very good job and finished my entire house in 5 days (Monday to Friday). I know they did all the painting prep work because I checked every morning and evening on the progress. The project manager helped with the color choices and the crews were on time. It was also nice to see the guys haul away all the trash on a daily basis. After reading reviews on Yelp and Houzz, we decided to call Open Hand Remodeling for estimate. A lot of contractor companies show up late for free estimate, but the OHR owner, Danny, showed up ON TIME and answered every single question we asked right away! Danny measured everything he needed for estimate and told us the approximate price for our guest bathroom remodeling. It was higher than we expected. But with 2 young kids and a busy life, we do need a remodeling company which can answer all the questions on remodeling,solve the problems right away, and do all of the work for us (except choosing the materials. tubs, vanity etc.) so we decided to use OHR. Danny, went through every step with me and informed me the remodeling schedule and deadline for materials on daily base. I could always call or text for his advices (during his working hours) when I was stuck in Home Depot and Tile stores didn't know how to choose. Danny has some wonderful contractors working with him. I just had some work done by Open Hand Remodeling. My house was built in the 50's and had a water-damaged popcorn ceiling with gaping cracks from various earthquakes over the years, old stained and faded carpet and an original electric panel from the dinosaur days! OHR handled all of those things and more! The end result was good, although there were definitely a few hiccups along the way! I chose OHR because the reviews were good and John was very pleasant on the phone. My appointment got cancelled twice because the lady that was scheduled to come got sick and then busy. Instead of her, they sent Zaff. He was very pleasant and helpful during the entire renovation...which allowed me to give OHR 5 stars instead of 1 star! Unfortunately, the first crew that came to plaster and paint did not do a good job. They threw my chandelier away without asking me, thinking I didn't want it since they were installing recessed lights, did a pitiful job of covering my furniture, messed up my bathroom sink and left their trash overnight for the wild animals to tear open... Also my contract said that they were going to install all new drywall on the ceiling, but they didn't. Instead, Zaff chose the more labor intensive slip coat resulting in a ceiling that was not smooth and a paint job that was sloppy. I was very upset and Zaff was horrified by the work that was not up to his (or my) standard! He quickly reprimanded his entire crew, replaced some of them with more competent workers, assured me that they would get the job done well, and agreed to take $300 off the bill because of the chandelier. The new crew fixed the sloppy job, cleaned up nicely and left me with a beautifully renovated living room and dining room. Now my electric panel is updated and I am able to run two appliances (or more) at the same time instead of blowing fuses every time I make a piece of toast while drying my clothes! The ceiling is nicely smooth with recessed lights and dimmer switches...my new carpet is wonderful...the walls are all freshly painted...and Zaff even had the crew install all new grounded outlets in the renovated area to replace my two prong outlets from the dark ages! A bonus that wasn't in the contract! Overall, I am happy to recommend this company, even though things went wrong along the way. The end result is beautiful, and Zaff really went the extra mile to see that everything turned out well in the end! read more

I got 3 different estimates but Open Hand had the lowest price, and was very clear on exactly what I would be getting. No hidden costs. The workers showed up on time and were always professional. We needed to have a window installed and the whole place framed, insulated, drywalled and painted. The garage is old and uneven. They were able to skim coat and sand the finished drywall so well, that you would never know how uneven the structure was behind the ceiling. I was hired by a tech company to open and run a lofts space, where we could house employees and interviewees while they were in town. The building our loft is in suggested a contractor and we were planning to use them, but after getting the final quote it was clear we needed to look at other options. I booked meetings with two other companies, one of them was Open Hand Remodeling. Essi came by to look at the space, meet me and learn about the project. He was friendly, professional and enthusiastic about our build. When we got the quote back we were able to stay within budget and still keep everything we wanted. The other company I interviewed was less expensive, but Essi seemed like a better fit. Essi provided a team of carpenters, electricians, drywallers and painters that were all very professional and talented. He managed everything, so that didn't have to and the whole process was pretty hassle free. In the end our remodel was done on time we got exactly what we wanted. Tried reaching out apparently they are no longer taking clients. Seemed like nice people after chatting for a little bit.

For years, I tolerated living in a low rent apartment that had a bathroom which resembled a child's nursery: light pink tiles on the floor and walls with baby blue bathtub and sink. But after a while, despite the cheap rent, it really started to bother me. It was especially embarassing when guests came over. Gunky grout, questionable electrical outlet, no cabinet underneath the sink, so the hairdryer and additional rolls of toilet paper were stored on the floor, which was not ideal when the cheap plumbing backed up and flooded on a fairly regular basis. When I went on a vacation, I asked some friends to fix the bathroom up, but the landlord quickly put a stop to that (right after they finished the "demo" part of the job) since they didn't have a contractor's license. When I returned from vacation, I had a naked bathroom: four walls and some pipes but no shower or sink. Yelp to the rescue. I called Danny and he came over the very next day - which happened to be a holiday, and gave me an estimate. My only complaint is that he and his crew were too good, their work was too thorough! All I wanted was a pretty bathroom, but I got a floor that was level, a ceiling that didn't have a mystery bulge anymore, walls that were smooth and straight. The stud boards underneath the walls which were rotten got replaced. The electrical outlet was moved to a safer location and no longer looks like it was hand assembled by Thomas Edison. I have a cool "shampoo niche" built into a shower wall instead of that grungy wire contraption that hangs around the shower head, or that icky old fashioned soap dish that constantly collects mold. I have cabinet storage space underneath the sink. And best of all, everything is white and looks clean. Danny helped me understand what kind of things HAD to be done and what kind of things were probably okay to leave as they were. For instance, I still have the same blue bathtub, but he patiently explained the different options such as re-glazing a tub or replacing it. The best part was when I asked him how long it would take, he joked, "about seven months!" So he has a great sense of humor too! He was thoughtful and polite as well. He worked hard to make sure the shower was done first so I wouldn't have to keep intruding upon the neighbors. He could have taken complete advantage of my desperate situation, but he didn't. The job was finished on schedule (actually, one day earlier than promised). Now my bathroom looks like it was meant to be used by grown ups. And even though it's just an apartment, I will likely be calling Danny again to get rid of the same disgusting pink tile that is in my kitchen. Open Hand Remodeling just finished building a brand new custom house for us in Los Feliz. We gutted our old spanish bungalow and built a 2 level modern/spanish house. An endeavor that seemed extremely daunting at first, turned truly joyous In the hands of Danny and his crew. There really aren't enough superlatives to describe the quality of work and level of customer service these guys provide. In preparation for our project, before even having plans, we met with 4 contractors. We liked Open Hand's model of Design-Build, thinking (rightfully) that a one-stop-shop operation would make things easier. Danny's estimate didn't come up the cheapest nor the most expensive. At the end of the day we just felt comfortable with him and decided to give him the job. From the get go, Danny and his architect were extremely accommodating. Both me and my wife are working long hours and raising two young children, what doesn't leave us much time for anything else. OHR team worked with our schedule and never pressured us to make decisions before we were ready. Once the City approved our plans we started construction. Again, all our fears and assumptions about unreachable/flaky contractors went out the window. Danny was on the job site every day and constantly gave us updates in person and/or by phone. Needless to say, on a big project like this, not everything went always smoothly. We encountered some major challenges due to complex engineering issues and a very demanding inspector. Here too, Danny always provided full disclosure of everything that's happening and came up with the most cost effective solutions to move forward. His entire crew, starting with the demo people and ending with painters and finishers is extremely professional, kind and considerate. In every step of the way, these guys' passion for what they do is showing loud and clear. Our past contractor had done a terrible job on installing our bathroom plumbing and we were on the lookout for a professional and trustworthy company. OHR is exactly that.
