A friend and I visited Open City for the first time for July 4th brunch. Open City was the perfect spot for a festive holiday brunch: lively, poppin', prime location in Woodley Park, and lots of red-white-and-blue brunchers and servers. Perfect kickoff for a Tuesday off~ However, Open City decided to add one more layer of festivity (or meh-tivity) to July 4th and brunch was red-white-and-HOT HOT HOT. Like, actual hot. Humid, stuffy-air, 100-degrees, DC-summer HOT. There was no AC and while the fans were blowing and the windows were open, they didn't provide any heat relief. The place was HOT and we were melting. Sweating. They didn't even serve us ice waters! Just chilled water! The lady next to us was so funny and asked for two glasses of ICE water. Now, onto the food. We got the french toast (with a tiny cup of blueberries for +$2) and the breakfast pizza. The french toast was good but the pizza was ok and nothing special. It was overly cheesy and had skimpy toppings (while I LOVE a generously cheesy pizza, it felt too heavy esp for such a HOT dining environment). Great patio, pies and coffee don't offset the poor customer service and management at the Calvert St location. The rare times I go to this cute and convenient neighborhood watering hole, the servers, hosts and management give the experience of "don't bother me, I'll get around to it...maybe..." and their service suggests management and employees would rather be anywhere other than serving there. It seems service is understaffed and overworked. I've had to flag them down every time I've visited. Everyone seems stressed, unhappy and disgruntled. Recently, on the perfect spring morning, I came for a coffee meeting. I asked for help opening a patio umbrella since it was sunny getting warmer. The hostess said. "Um, that's a bit much to ask." That was odd. When she asked the manager, he came over and suggested I do it myself. That was even odder. Ultimately, they opened the patio umbrellas (and the patio filled up with business within the hour). I was shocked at the attitude. Perhaps their ownership puts pressure on them? Maybe management is disengaged or lacks customer service training? If it wasn't for the hotel business they draw from the Omni and Marriott, this place would have to be out of business. They can't possibly have many return customers. The cappuccino's are great. So is the chocolate silk pie. The food is OK. I recommend getting your cafe order to go and expecting to be treated like you're asking them to do push-ups in the rain. read more

This place never gets old. We waited 10 minutes for a table. The service and food were excellent. I had the burger with fries. It was cooked perfectly. Delish! We also had a side of mac and cheese. The server said it was a must. It was really good. A bit too creamy for me, which I didn't think was possible, but again good. Overall a great experience. read more

For almost 3 years this has been my family's go-to for a coffee date, kids' weekend breakfast, or grabbing dinner when we were too tired to cook. Food is pretty affordable compared to a lot of places in the city, and it's better quality than any diner I've been to while still having that comfortable, casual, reliable vibe. The staff are always kind and helpful. The 24th St. chicken sandwich is about as good as Lucky Buns' Dirty Bird sandwich and way cheaper! My family never gets chicken sandwiches from Lucky Buns anymore because we can just go to Open City and not break the bank as much. read more

It's easy to see why Open City is constantly crowded! Although this diner has many seatings, this restaurant is always full of excited patrons, few of whom would wait even before it opens! The reasons? 1) Cool atmosphere that is perfect for all situations, from solo dining to group hangout, that is 2) perfect for every hour of the day because of its large menu selection ranging from full brunch to light snack to late-night bite and yet despite of the high quantity of choices, 3) every choice is delicious! For example, my choice of hash-brown bowl did more than satisfy my midnight hunger. With a nicely-cooked hash brown as the base, the bowl is fused with melted cheese and jalapeno and topped with sunny-side-up egg. In short, the bowl was phenomenal. My one complaint is that the price is a bit high; for my example, a hash-brown bowl totaled to be $15 with tax and tip and that was only a snack. Nonetheless, I think the food is certainly worth paying a little more for the delicious food that makes this diner one of DC's most popular restaurants! Open City is worth trying out at least once. --- tl;dr version: 1) Constantly populated because of wide selection of delicious food 2) Perfect for any situation and any hour of the day 3) Slightly pricey but worth trying at it once. read more

I was staying at the Omnishore Hotel across the street and this place came up as a nearby breakfast option. I ordered their bloody mary (which they have won awards for apparently) which comes with a stalk of celery, olive, lemon, and bacon (my favorite). I thought it was pretty good--wish it was a little bit more boozy. For breakfast, I ordered an everything bagel which comes with lox, lettuce, tomatoes, and onions. The cream cheese has capers chopped into it with a hint of lemon in it (stealing this idea). I loved everything about it. It probably is the lox but I felt the $16 price point was a bit steep. Even so, at least it was good. Service was alright, the person who was helping me might not have been a morning person... lol. As I am writing this, I regret not getting their hashbrown square. I was in DC for the weekend and was looking for a breakfast spot near the Zoo. I looked up a few, but this one convinced me. It has plenty of options for breakfast so I knew I'd find something I'd like. They offered pancakes, waffles, eggs served in a variety of ways, and the ability to customize your own unique meal. I was feeling like a breakfast sandwich and ordered. The service was quick for 8:30a on a busy weekend in DC. The food was out in 15-20 minutes. Make sure you order the hash brown. This was the standout item for me. Crunchy on the outside, but soft sand warm on the inside. The egg, cheese, and pepper breakfast sandwich satisfied my hunger, but it wasn't very flavorful. I'd go again, but I'd probably go with the Belgian waffles which looked great! The coffee was pretty good as well. It was tasty, but I wish it was a little hotter. Can someone explain to me why it is so hard to find breakfast served all day in DC? Open City fills that void in the city, though I was very indifferent about the whole experience on a federal holiday in the mid-afternoon. I ordered the Huevos Rancheros ($13.95), which were good and had a nice portion. There was nothing terribly special about it, but I had a good meal. My friend discovered that coffee is not unlimited and has a refill price of $1.49, which seemed kind of weird. We tried to order dessert, but I decided against it due to the poor service we had throughout the meal. Our server was awful. She had to be chased down for water, menus, food, and so on. We needed it, she forgot it. I wouldn't be inclined to come back after seeing how poor service was in a slow time. read more

I know we're still in post-COVID times and the restaurant industry is still recovering, but our server gave us attitude basically the entire meal (and the restaurant was basically empty so she wasn't being pulled in a lot of directions). We stayed at the Omni Shoreham Hotel across the way and came here for breakfast one of the mornings. Good place for your typical breakfast and a cup of coffee. Ordered a hazelnut latte and your coffee comes with animal crackers. I was so surprised but delighted by it. For breakfast I got a plate of the Open City Royale. Open city is good. It isn't the best brunch you'll ever have by any means but it's consistently above average. I've been coming here for years and tried many different things on the menu. Tip: definitely stick to breakfast/brunch items. Come early or prepare to wait on line, especially if you have a table larger than 2-3 people. Here's what I would recommend: If you are starving/hungover: the Open City Royale: two eggs, choice of meat, hash browns or grits, pancakes or French toast, toast or English muffin. $14. Great value, tons of food. California scramble: veggies, guac, cheese and sour cream. $13. Add chorizo for $3. Brioche French toast $9 Waffle $8.25 they used to have a chai waffle which was amazing but it's not on the menu anymore - not sure if it was amazing. I visited for brunch and had a great time. They have vegan options for brunch with is rare in DC. I had the tofu tostadas. They are very filling and and tasted great. The mimosas and green smoothie were delicious. Customer service was terrific. The staff went out of their way to make sure we felt welcomed and even struck up conversations with us. This made the dining experience feel less commercialized and more welcoming. The interior of the restaurant could use some work to be more aesthetically pleasing. It looks outdated. Decent brunch place, but for the wait, I expected more. I was only in town for two days, so each meal was incredibly important to me. My two best friends live in D.C., so I threw caution, and yelp reviews, to the wind and let them shepherd me around the city. To set the stage, my friends definitely enjoy food, but they do not obsess over it like I do. That is how we found ourselves here on a Saturday afternoon. There is nothing wrong with this place, but I have to say that it is a quintessential three-star rating my book. The wait at about 12 p.m. on a Saturday was 20-25 minutes. They do not accept reservations. I enjoyed their system of texting you when your table is ready, because this meant we could walk around the area and didn't have to worry about leaving a zone as we would if we had a beeper (or worse, if we had to just listen to someone shouting names). Right at 25 minutes we got a text that our table was ready. By that time, I heard the wait had increased to 35 minutes. Moral of the story is if you want to eat here and hate waiting for a table, like I do, forgo sleeping in and get here earlier. It is a decent sized restaurant, so it isn't like they are creating pretend popularity with a restaurant the size of a shoebox. We sat in the sunroom. It was fun sitting there, because you can watch everyone outside, but the glass seemed to amplify the sun in my eyes. It's hard to explain, because it wasn't like there was a sunbeam that made me squint, it was more like everything was a little brighter than it should be. If there is even a chance of sun, bring sunglasses in case you end up in my situation. The menu is extensive. You can definitely find a dish for everyone here. I went with the Pan Seared Tofu and my friends got the Brioche French Toast and a Veggie Scramble. Two of us got a biscuit instead of a side of toast, which I wouldn't recommend. 1. It is $2 extra and 2. It had a somewhat odd sourdough taste. If you decide to go for a biscuit, ask for jam. The jam is amazing, but doesn't automatically come with it. The Pan Seared Tofu has a Mediterranean taste to it, which was expected because it lists ingredients such as lemon and tahini. The lemon flavor really dominated the dish. I thought it was ok, but I probably wouldn't order it again, because it was lacking flavor (other than lemon). The French Toast was pretty good. It was fluffy and had the perfect amount of sweetness. I got to try my friend's Cortado. It was really smooth and definitely gives you a caffeine boost! Overall, as I mentioned earlier, the food was decent, but with all the amazing eateries in D.C., I really don't understand why this place is so popular. If you have a group of people who all enjoy eating different things, this would work for you, otherwise, if you want to be wowed, I'd look somewhere else. read more

Came into Open City for a late lunch, so there was no wait time for a table. Wanted to sit outside to enjoy the weather, but all of the tables and chairs were titling due to disrepair. Ordered a house-made hibiscus soda, but it tasted mostly of club soda with a bland flavoring syrup. Breakfast is served all day on the weekends, so I ordered huevos rancheros. For $13, I received two eggs over two small corn tortillas, a ton of sauce, some avocado, and a light sprinkling of cheese. I finished it in two minutes because it was such a small serving. Ordered the banana coconut cheesecake, which was served to us practically crushed because our waitress had a hard time cutting it. On top of that, we had to ask multiple people to get our server because she was so inattentive and borderline rude. Don't get scammed here -- there are many more places in the area to spend your money. read more

I don't really get the hype about this place. Every time I've been there have been massive amounts of people and there has always been a wait to get in, but then once seated the food is exceptionally mediocre. The menu options are very straightforward and predictable, and the food is just "okay." You are not going to come here and be blown away by the quality of the food. Imagine hotel breakfast but twice the price. It's also not exactly a relaxing atmosphere, as the tables are all crowded together in a big clump and the noise levels are consistently high. Many people come here with their kids/strollers, but I've found it difficult to fit a stroller anywhere and the seating arrangements aren't ideal for little ones. If you're looking for brunch, there are much better options in D.C. at the same price point, where you get better bang for your buck. I think this place could be better if the menu was revamped and the space was redesigned, but for now it feels blah and outdated. read more

People who live in NW DC seem to really like Open City and when I was living in Mt Pleasant, I was a fan of Tryst (their sister location in Adams Morgan). However, since moving to Capitol Hill, I think I only wanted to be a fan of Tryst. It seemed to be the cool thing to do. Same with Open City. The location is perfect being just a few blocks away from the Woodley Park Metro and the space is large and service good. However, the food is just sub par. I've never been wowed and my ham, cheese, egg breakfast sandwich wasn't so bland! I only go here for meetings if they insist. read more

Damnit! I should have just ordered coffee. The guy sitting next to me scored a few complimentary animal crackers with his and I was totally h-a-t-in-g. Great service and delicious food! I highly recommend the 24th Street Fried Chicken (fried chicken thigh with kale & brussel slaw, jalapeño, and garlic mayo on a potato bun). Goes great with some sweet potato fries. I'm not sure if they have AC ... or if they do, it wasn't on (and it was a hot, muggy day when I went) but the fans made it bearable. Good for breakfast I happened to be in Woodley Park and was in the mood for coffee before attending a training. Thanks to Yelp, I found Open City, which was on my way to where I needed to be and close to the metro. Plus, Open City describes itself as a Coffee Shop, Wine Bar, and Diner. The description alone has two of my favorite things, so I just had to go in. It was meant to be. Open City utilizes its space fairly well and I was surprised on how much seating they actually have. They have a patio area which is heated during the cold, regular sitting area, and a bar area. Guests need to wait to be seated but if you're just ordering coffee or grabbing something to go like I was, you can go to a separate line. I ordered a Mocha after deciding to splurge on something more then just their house coffee. While waiting for my coffee, I looked over their menu as well as their display case with all of their pastries. Everything looked tasty- which is a reason I need to come back. My Mocha was delicious and well made. The baristas take time to make it, so don't stop here if you're in a rush. Everyone was friendly too. Open City Definitely have a neighborhood vibe and seem to know their regulars, from what I observed. Its the kind of place you can go to during the week for a quick bite or the weekend to enjoy a leisurely brunch. I definitely want to come back and try their food. read more

Open City serves up one of the better Greek salads I've had in awhile. It's huge, with fresh ingredients and defaults to dressing on the side. All things I'm quite partial to. Sadly, it took about half an hour for my salad to actually arrive... mostly because the order was seemingly forgotten. Awesome. In the meanwhile, I had a lovely De Koninck and caught up on some much-belated reading. Points won back for not including said De Koninck in the final tab. I recognize that it was an unexpectedly nice gesture for waiting around for so long for my salad. Still, they didn't -have- to. And I really respect that kind of attitude for making things right. This diner-meets-cafe-meets-bar is a pleasant, chill daytime spot with free wifi, tasty sandwiches and salads and the like, and a homey neighborhood feel. It's mostly table seating, so it doesn't really lend itself to sitting and working all day like its sister restaurant Tryst, but it's quite comfortable for a long hangout meal with friends or by yourself. The limited bar seating is often home to a number of people there alone. Whether you want to make use of the espresso bar or the cocktail list, Open City's got you covered. I've never had their brunch, but can confirm that it exists! The bartenders I've encountered have been above-average in genuine friendliness, and haven't judged me for ordering an Old Fashioned at 2pm or a pot of tea at 8pm.
