If you ever feel like "It's all Greek to me", then step in to Opa Grille, where things won't feel so run of the mill in the world of Mediterranean grub. This past Friday (or Festivus?), a couple of buddies and I dined and had a truly glorious meal. Opa! OG is impressive before even walking through the doors. For a while, I was convinced this location was cursed. Garden Grill, Nick and Charley's Steakhouse, Toast and Jamz, and even more than that have come and gone from that storefront. Then finally, the Grecians took over and business has been booming ever since. It's not a large restaurant, but they make it work. A decent amount of tables scattered about as well as a beautiful bar area with some seating, perfect for grabbing a little ouzo. We sat in the back left room made up of only a few tables which gives off an ever so slight secluded feeling, one that's nice as OG would teeter somewhere close to the "Loud" selection on your Yelp check in. Plenty of Greek delicacies available on the menu. From gyros and souvlaki to moussaka and pasticcio and so much in between. To start, your table will be donned with a basket of pita bread and a generous bowl of tzatziki. It's fresh and you can easily fill up on it, but don't! There's more tastiness to come! Usually I go for the spinach pie platter (or spanakopita for my Greek friends). You'll get a huge salad and a choice of side along with a hefty piece of spinach/feta love. But with the holidays upon us, I went for a smaller portion of food. Gyro with lamb and beef and a side salad. A perfectly sized gyro with tender, juicy meat and a fresh Greek salad. It even had a stuffed grape leaf on the side. Nice addition. What top things off (beyond the reasonable price to food portion ratio) is the service. We had one waitress, but two other employees asked if we needed anything multiple times throughout the dinner. At one point we asked for more tzatziki and ended up with three more bowls! That's the way uh huh uh huh I like it! Overall, Opa Grille has broken the curse of the storefront, and then some. With great Greek grub, nice prices, and a staff that's on top of their game, Opa is worthy of consistent visits, which you're bound to walk away happy from. I was here before, and I'll be back again. The Quick: Solid 3.5 greek restaurant. The tzatziki sauce is refreshing and addicting, most of the portions are big, the sangria tasty, and the service only mediocre. A nice spot but nothing fancy. The Details: Virtually unlimited tzatziki and warm pita for the table is what keeps me coming back. The salads are very good, and the portions are large-- except for the warm grilled octopus. This dish is phenomenal but $16 and tiny; more expensive than most of the entrées. Pro Tip: If you're going to order a Gyro platter with a side salad, you're better off ordering a salad with a Gyro topper. It is about the same amount of food and half the price. I have had overall good experiences at this Greek restaurant. They lost a star because they serve their food at a pace that is much slower than I had hoped. The server was pretty attentive though. The food was well seasoned and flavorful. I covered my Spanakopita in the white sauce to make it go down because it was a little dry. I got the lamb chops as my entree and they were delicious. My friend got the pork that she wasn't too thrilled with. The baklava seemed like it was store bought instead of homemade which didn't stop me from eating every last drop. The food was good and no issues with parking so I will definitely be back when I have nothing but time on my hands to slowly eat dinner. read more

Extremely slow service... and when I mentioned this to the hostess, she became combative. Clearly not coming back here.

2 Strikes and youre out. Not goingto spend our hard earned money for a 3rd strike. 1st time the lamb chops were ordered well done, and stressed they had to be well done. When they arrived, the juice on them was bloody, i didnt even have to cut into them to know they were rare. Where was the miscommunication? They had to take them back and cook them more. 2nd time (last night) I ordered the pork souvlaki pita sandwich. First mistake was when it arrived there was no tzatziki in the pita. I let the waitress know and she stated tzatziki does not come with the sandwich, and I can use the one that was served with the bread basket. On the menu it clearly states the sandwiches come with tzatziki. Why would I use the tzatziki sauce that comes with the bread basket that the whole table was dipping into? She asked if i wanted "extra" tzatziki. I said no, I want the sauce that was supposed to come with my pita sandwich. She brought it over without anymore back and forth. To make matters worse, the pork was inedible. I could barely cut through it, let alone chew it. Each piece I put in my mouth had to be spit out. My husband, who will eat ANYTHING, couldn't even chew through it. We are Greek, and know a decent souvlaki. Told the waitress and she offered a chicken souvlaki. I didnt want a chicken souvlaki, I wanted a pork souvlaki in a GREEK restaurant. When paying for the check, the waitress packed two "fresh" souvlakia. What does that even mean, I was served old ones? Of course no manager to be found during Sunday night dinner at 7pm. This restaurant wouldnt last a day in Astoria or Bayside. They survive because the majority of their clientele is not Greek, but we are and this is NOT good Greek food. FYI, calamari should not be perfectly round, skinny, and chewy rings. read more

Ordered curb side pick up: Gyro platter, chicken souvlaki platter, octopus appetizer. Food - I'll give it a three star. Gyro platter was standard. Chicken souvlaki was charred nicely. Octopus appetizer was delicious. Both platters were served with soup, lemon chicken and seafood bisque. Both soup were too salty and heavy/creamy. I had to skim the pools of oil floating on the top of the bisque. Service - I took a star away because I experienced a micro act of discrimination while waiting for my curb side pick up. I was standing front and center and somehow when the staff comes out, she asked every older white person around me what they were here for and what was the name placed with the order. Many of the people who were served before me arrived after me and stood much further from the entrance, so it was clear to me that they were favored over me. This is a favorite for my husband. He loves the gyro meat. He usually gets a salad with it. We brought him here for Father's Day. We had reservations but I don't think they were needed. We got here at 1:00 pm and I was pleased to see the lunch menu on the table. So many places make you take dinner selections on holidays. The lunch specials came with a choice of soup. My family very much enjoyed the food, service, and casual atmosphere. Our favorite dish, hands-down, was the octopus appetizer. It was light and flavorful, just like a similar dish we ate in Mykonos this past summer. The gyro and dips (taramasalata and tzatziki) were as good as any you'll find in the ti-state area. The one disappointment was the moussaka, which I found greasy and flavorless. The service was friendly and helpful. We were on a bit of a time crunch, and they took care of us in time. Let's me start by saying this place in underrated. We have ordered some here twice recently and both times it's been sooo delicious. Last time we ordered the chicken souvlaki lunch special which was yummy. It comes with French fries and soup. Tonight with got the chicken souvlaki dinner platter with lemons potatoes, also comes with salad and pita bread and we were blown away. Everything was so flavorful, fresh and cooked to perfection. The portions are great too! The chicken souvlaki was cooked to the way I love it, cooked enough to my liking (i tend to eat overcooked chicken because it freaks me out) and they manage to cook so well for me and yet it's still juicy. I need to know the secret! I also decided to get an order of stuffed grape leaves, my favorite! They were delicious and fresh! Sorry no pictures this time, I tend to do terrible with pictures when I do take out but I promise I'm working on becoming a better and taking take out pics! Highly recommend this spot! So I've eaten here about 10 times only because my girlfriend insists on going here... and EVERY time I order the gyro because we'll that's what I get at Greek places. So you'd think a Greek restaurant should be able to make a decent gyro. So I learned early on to pre-emptively ask the waitress to tell the kitchen PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE give me nice slices of the gyro meat and NOT little dried out chips of meat the size of quarters... and don't you know it... EVERY freakin time I get crappy dried out meat chips instead of what I would consider nice long moist slices of gyro meat. After I almost broke a tooth the last time I swore I would NEVER return. We got chicken gyros. They were just okay definitely not as crispy and as warm as I would like. We will eat in the restaurant and try them again and hope we will be more impressed. Delicious food but be prepared to wait. I took my family here for dinner on a Friday night. We showed up around 6pm and the restaurant was still relatively empty. We had our heart set on some delicious Greek dishes. The waiter gave us a little time o look over the menu then promptly took our order. That's where the promptness of the night ended. The meal I'm about describe was served over a two and a half hour period, we didn't leave the restaurant until 8:30pm! The soup and salad courses were not served until 1-hour after we were seated. We started our evening by sharing an appetizer, the Saganaki (flaming cheese). Pan seared Kefalogravire cheese with fresh tomato on top served with a lemon wedge. It was a hit. We all loved the texture and flavor of the dish. Awesome dish. About 45-minutes later our soup and salads arrived. Two greek salads (lettuce, tomato, onions, cucumbers, feta cheese, stuffed grape leaves, olives and oregano. They were also delicious. Honestly, the best Greek salad I've had in a long time. The soup was the lemon chicken soup, also very tasty. For the main course my wife ordered the Vegetarian Moussaka. She loved the eggplant and zucchini in the dish. This dish was also a big hit. My daughter had the Homemade Spinach Pie entree. She enjoyed the spinach and feta cheese filling in the dish. She ordered the dish with French fries which were also very good. I ordered the gyro platter, a little disappointing in my eyes. The dish was strictly meat and potatoes. I was expecting maybe a little lettuce or tomatoes or some form or garnish. None. The meat itself was very good but the presentation of the dish was unimpressive. We enjoyed the endless supply of pita chips and yogurt sauce on the table. That's probably the only way we survived to two and one half hour meal. The restaurant is reasonably sized. Maybe 25-30 tables. Looking around while we were the I spotted at least 8-9 wait staff (including hostesses, waiters, waitresses and bus staff). So the staff to table count was reasonable. I really can't explain why I took so long to receive our food. There was constant movement by the wait staff even though the food wasn't coming out of the kitchen. I knew it was a bad sign when the people at the tale next to us took out their newspapers. The wife finally called over the waitress and said rather bluntly "This is taking too f--king long for our food" Her husband promptly shushed her when everyone around them turned and smiled in agreement. We would have appreciated better communication from the wait staff on the status of our order. We were left in the dark the whole time hoping our meal would come out next. The desserts looked appetizing but honestly, after 2 1/2 hours we just wanted to go home. Bottom line, the food is delicious but I'm not willing to give up that much of my time. Just got take out from Opa Grill, a fairly new Greek restaurant. Their gyros are great. My wife and I went for dinner a couple of weeks ago and had the gyros also. They were just as tasty as tonight. The decor is very pleasing and inviting. Everyone including our waitress was very personable and made us feel welcomed. We didn't know what Greek wine we should have so they bent over backwards to show us their wines and let us sample some. We choose the house wine which was very good. It's s new restaurant in my area. It seems very eloquent. I would highly recommend trying them out. You won't be disappointed. They also have hamburgers on the menu if you don't care for Greek food. read more

Had a family lunch here while visiting long island. We were greeted by this nice guy (he must have been the owner) and were seated at this huge table in the back/ side room. Our waitress was sugar sweet and so helpful. My aunt was a little annoyed that they had ran out of her two favorites, moussaka and felafel too! But after her wave of disappointment passed she was able to find something else yummy to eat. I had the chicken gyro wrap, it was beyond amazing. I love to dip it in their homemade yogurt sauce YUM! MY FAVORITE! My husband got this greek salad with chicken shish kebab on the top, it was really really good. And a large enough portion for him. I really had a great time eating at this restaurant, it was delicious and the experience was just delightful. Unfortunately I'm not in this area often enough. It's been a while since I had some Greek food so the Mrs and I decided to venture out for some good Greek! Opa Grille is located inside a strip mall on Hillside Ave, along side H-Mart and Rite Aid. Parking: There is plenty of parking in the parking lot of this strip mall. Seating: Opa Grille is a brightly lit restaurant with mainly wood furniture. The place looks very clean and polished with seating for approximately 40+ people. We came on a cold Thursday night and the place wasn't pack at all (probably due to the weather), and the servers lead us to our table right away. They started us off with some pita and fresh tzatziki sauce- I have to say that's some good tzatziki there and the pita was soft and warm. I was debating between the regular Gyro sandwich $6.95 or the Gyro Platter $16.95 I didn't know what was included in the platter so I went with the platter. So once I got the platter, I realize the platter comes with the Greek salad and a choice of a side. and the Misses got the Chicken Gyro Sandwich ($6.95) The Chicken Gyro sandwich was great, very flavorful with about 6-8 pieces of slice chicken gyro meat. the pita was warm and with the tzatziki sauce, it's perfect!! The lamb/beef Gyro was good, a little bit on the greasier side but the flavor was definitely there! they don't give you extra pita so you just get a plate of meat and your side (in my case, 2 pieces of broccoli) Cost: WEIRD: Now if I'm doing my math correctly, the lamb/beef Gyro platter cost $16.95 and the regular Gyro Sandwich cost $6.95 and a salad cost $3.25, that means my two pieces of broccoli cost 6.75!!!~! I don't know about you but I definitely see something wrong here considering they don't pile tons of meat in the platter. Overall: Opa Grille is okay, it had a bunch of good options and the pita and tzatziki sauce is excellent! I'm not sure if the price is good but you definitely want to compare the value of getting a platter or just a sandwich before ordering it. read more

My wife and I invited our party of 12 to a Friday night dinner. When we arrived at 6:00 pm i immediately informed our waitress that we had to be on our way at 7:30 pm. Well 7:30 is approaching and two of our entrees still have not been served. Our waitress was stretched beyond her limits and could not handle our situation along with the other tables she was responsible for. Wine was fine...appetizers even better, but the manager's lack of control of our situation was unacceptable. When I 'invest' $500 of my funds on a dinner experience that leaves a sour taste in all of our mouths, I will remember how badly we were treated. Will I return? Only if my wife insists. Opa Grille is a local favorite and my favorite Greek place in the New Hyde Park area (there are not many). I typically order the Greek salad with chicken souvlaki or pita sandwich. I have also tried the gyro pita. My favorite part is how fresh and tender the chicken souvlaki is, and overall how clean and fresh the meal tastes. It's a very basic pita (meat, lettuce, tomato, onions, tzatziki). While at some fast food Greek spots, I may feel like the pita sandwich is too greasy, Opa Grille serves a healthier, fresher kind that I consistently go back to. Giving it four stars because sometimes the service is slow. Once, when I did pick up from them, they forgot to add a pita and meat to my salad, so I had to drive back. It's also not the *best* pita sandwich I've ever had, it's just better than most in my local area. read more

We stepped into this place when we found out Sripraphai down the street was closed on Wednesdays. This place is packed and popular with the locals. The menu is standard Greek with a mixture of some American fare. The complimentary pita and tzatziki are tasty. Food comes out quickly and the service is pleasant. Portions are good sized and prices reasonable. The Greek sausage was a bit different than what we're used to and was somewhat over spiced. The souvlaki we got was terribly dry but well seasoned. Our group of four jumped in for an early dinner (little before 6pm) on Saturday night and boy am I glad we arrived when we did because this place filled up fast in the first 20 minutes we were sitting there. Upon walking in I was pleasantly surprised to find a warm, appropriately lit restaurant which you would not expect from the generic strip mall exterior. We perused the large one page menu that contained many items you would expect from a Greek restaurant. We ordered a few items to share including a small horiatiki salad, which had small chunks of feta incorporated into the well balanced dressing. The taramasalata was fresh and delicious bordered with tomato and cucumber. The grilled octopus came sliced in bite sized chunks which were perfectly tender and flavorful Incorporated with onion and lemon, and olive oil. There was plenty of triangle of pita (both plain and whole wheat) for dipping along with complimentary tzatziki (which was not overly garlicky - a great version!). For our mains we had spanakopita, which was a generous two large triangle slabs making it easier to share. a simple grilled chicken cutlets with string beans I did not try. The seafood combo was a large platter of filet sole stuffed with spinach and feta cheese. 1 piece of octopus and 2 stuffed shrimp, which my teenage cousin ordered with fries that were nicely cooked. I had the bronzini special - I ordered it whole with a side of lemon potatoes since they didn't have any horta (dandelion greens) which is to be expected since they are not in season. We all shared, but none of my dining companions were into my sea bass since they don't like their meal "looking at them". The one misstep was having to ask for our soups after we received our mains. The waitress apologized and I had my avgolemono soup at the end. It was very good and not overly thick. The service and staff are very good with multiple friendly and efficient waitresses and bus boys to make every move along nicely. The kitchen handled the crowd well and you could see the plates coming out as fast as the people were coming in. I also saw large bags of to-go orders heading out. They certainly can handle the crowds they deserve to have - and I will be back to be a part of it soon! read more

I can't comment how busy it was the night we ordered delivery, but on the night we dined in, it wasn't busy at all. Fast forward 2 years later we decided to give it another shot. This time for pick up. We were pleasantly surprised. The food was good and the portions generous.. depending on the meal.
