I like to keep it simple so I thoroughly enjoyed my vegan vanilla ice cream!
Kevin K.

This is a really good stop...if you want a lot of comfort food--A LOT. The emphasis is on getting you full fast. There are plenty of standard American favorites and a whole host of desserts. The staff are friendly and very helpful. Don't miss looking around for surprises like comfortable nooks and intriguing corners that give you a quick look at local history. There are three floors including an outdoor patio upstairs for sun seekers. What's missing? While they offer a vegetarian burger and vegan takes on some of their desserts, I'd really like to see "NSA" (No sugar added) options and more fresh fruit toppings. The portions should be offered at a reduced size for the little ones and those watching their weight or glucose levels. There is a lot to like at OWS, just go after you've had a good physical workout (or two).

Y'all I love this place! I live in Florida, but have lots of family in TN, so I visit frequently. I came here a few years ago and absolutely loved it, I've been thinking about it since. This past visit for Labor Day, I brought my whole family and we all got sandwiches and 3 milkshakes. The food was spectacular, and the shakes were cutely dressed and very yummy. Being from FL, the food I experience at home is wondrous, it's always hard for me to find a place in TN that I adore and enjoy. Ooltewah Whistle Stop never disappoints. The atmosphere is so cute and vintage, it's a perfect lunch date spot. The service is also amazing, those girls are so sweet, and attentive! I dream about coming back here whenever I'm back home, it's that good.

Angry beehive sandwich & chips

This place has a relaxing, welcoming vibe and my family really enjoyed our meal. The staff were very friendly, especially our server Tyler. Angry beehive sandwich-- a sandwich with honey and cheese might seem weird but it was delicious and the chicken was perfectly cooked. It felt fulfilling but not heavy. I tried one of the simple milkshakes (mixed caramel ice cream with cookies and cream ice cream) but nothing was simple about the flavor. It was one of the best milkshakes I've ever had. Both ice cream flavors were strong and well blended; the milkshake consistency was absolutely perfect.

Very small, but very good cafe specializing in giant ice cream sundays. Parking lot seems much bigger than the interior seating will accommodate. Greater fairly quickly upon entering and seated quickly. Limited but interesting meal menu. Food was very good. Sundays are gigantic with commensurate pricing. Only had dinner, no desserts this trip.

Loaded haystack

Loving the changes under the new ownership! Lots more options for vegetarians and vegans, even a haystack! Their milkshakes are iconic. Everything was tasty, and you can play yard games while you wait for your food. Will definitely be back!

The food was delicious. The staff was kind and helpful. When I arrived there was barely anyone there and I was able to sit up on the top floor for some quiet peaceful time.

Holy wow this is the most amazing dessert locale I have ever been to in my life (including serendipity in NY!) ... if you wanted to have a fun ice cream adventure, this has to hit your list. The food was yummy! But nothing - NOTHING - compares to the desserts.

Reese's brownie with ice cream, whipped cream and chocolate drizzle.

First time at this restaurant. Atmosphere was nice and welcoming. People were friendly including the servers. Food was just enough so we're ordered dessert. I had the jailhouse rock roast beef and my husband had the Ruben. I got a hal cup of the potato and corn chowder. Had a little heat but not a lot. Got a Reese's brownie with chocolate ice cream. The brownie was gooey, warm and delicious. Couldn't believe how reasonable it was. Can't wait to go back!

"The Whistle Stop" $11 (fried green tomatoes, smoked gouda pimento cheese, topped with sweet pickles).

Wonderful family restaurant with loads of charming art deco period character. They provide a downstairs dining area, rooftop dining/party area, a dog friendly outdoor seating area, as well as a unique upstairs dining area that's filled with interesting museum like memorabilia and wall hangings that you can spend a bit of time getting lost in. Very fun and informative. And yes, there's a train track just outside the building, and a train went by, blowing it's whistle while we were there. When we arrived and entered, we were asked if we had a reservation. We did not and were walk-ins for lunchtime. We were then informed of their reservations recommended policy, which was a bit confusing to understand (see their website's home page). Thankfully, they weren't extremely busy, and we were taken in and promptly seated. We chose to dine downstairs in their main area. This provided a front row seat to watching all the huge and intricate milkshakes and desserts being made. My gosh, those milkshakes! For this visit, we ordered a chicken salad sandwich ($10), the "Angry Beehive" sandwich ($12), and their signature side "The Whistle Stop" ($11) which is fried green tomatoes, smoked gouda pimento cheese, topped with sweet pickles. It was scrumptious! Service was friendly and a little slow paced. We weren't in a rush, though. We enjoyed watching them craft the humongous milkshakes (which average about $15 each), and one was even topped with a huge slice of cheesecake. It seems this place is geared more towards being a dessert destination. In all, nice and scrumptious first visit. Thanks, Whistle Stop!

First time visit here based on the recommendation from a friend, and it did not disappoint! Giving a 4.25/5 based on our dessert run experience. Will definitely stop by on our way back from Chattanooga or any nearby places that can give us a reason to stop by. The shakes, are you kidding me?! I took pics and videoed them as well. PLEASE. GO. TRY. THESE!!!

We've been dying to try this place since it opened, mostly because of the shakes they had. The inside is GORGEOUS! Definitely decorated to the earlier times. The food was a little underwhelming. My husband got the Angry Beehive with the side salad and I got the Cranberry salad with chicken. Our food was ok. They gave me chicken salad instead of chicken. They came back with made 4 chopped up chicken nuggets (meh). My husband said he wished he had more of the secret sauce. The milkshake presentation was fantastic. However there wasn't much to it. Cookies-n-cream ice cream with little Debbie snacks and ice cream sandwich on top. Frosting with crushed cookies around the edge. Our waiter recommended we ordered early since they take awhile to make. However, the shake came out maybe 5-10 minutes in the middle of the meal (it was starting to melt). I'd recommend when you're in the middle or towards the end of your meal, that's when you order your shake. Otherwise, it was nice. Got to see two trains pass by, and our waiter was great.

There's plenty of parking nearby so you don't have to walk far. This neat beer bar reminds me of the crowler shops that you used to find around Atlanta, with around 30 taps containing about a thrid local beer, so you can sample several local breweries without visiting each one (they're mostly not too near each other so this is very convenient). The taproom "beertender" seemed to be fairly knowledgeable regarding the various offerings - there's also a convenient list highlighting the different beers with style notes. We sat at the bar and were able to bring in some food from the nearby restaurants (I grabbed some wings at the nearby Marthie Ann's which were excellent). To drink I tried Hoptown's own Orange Mango Wheat - a somewhat basic wheat beer with hings of sweet tangerine and mango - nothing special. I had a Maine Brewing "Lunch" with the wings which is always a winner - it's an exceptional New England IPA. Service was great - I can see myself hitting Ooltewah just to come by for a break in driving.

I ordered the Carne Asada, which is usually my "go to" when I eat at a mexican restaurant. Wait time wasn't so bad. The chips and salsa were good too, the tortilla chips were crunchy and salsa was flavorful. But unfortunately, my Carne Asada fell flat. I asked the beef to be cooked at medium but the beef was tough and overcooked. I was surprised at how dry it was. There were some pieces of the beef that were decent, but overall just too overcooked and dry for me. It was pretty disappointing actually for my first time here. Service was great, they were attentive and checked up on us from time to time. I just felt like the Carne Asada price at $17.99 did not correlate with the quality of meat at all. The other sides were good, like the avocado, beans and rice. And the overall portion size was great too. But for the dish as a whole, I can't justify the price for that. I've been to other mexican restaurants in the area with better Carne Asada that I'd choose in a heartbeat. Despite that experience, I'd come back here but I'd definitely order something else.

I loved how creamy, yet light the sauce was. Also perfectly salted too. The Mushroom Raviolis were very flavorful, had a rich umami and savory taste to it. For my first dish here, it was very memorable. I'm pretty sure I was about to drink the sauce because I loved it haha. My only complaint is that I wish there was more. The dish had 6 raviolis. The ravioli was a decent size, but for the price I was expecting a little bit more. Despite this, I would come back again. I really enjoyed my food, it was a 4.5/5 for me.

So we arrive just about 15 minutes early but were immediately seated. It was a bit confusing about where the host stand is since there are two entrances... but no problem because the owner was at the bar to greet us. The customer service is top tier! The venue is beautiful! But the food ... left something to be desired. I ordered the pot roast based on recommendations from the waiter. He also recommended the greens over the green beans. I also added a side of mashed potatoes and fried corn. So first, the plate came out messy (see pic). It would have only taken a second to wipe off the edge of the plate. Then the pot was appeared shredded and covered in thyme and rosemary. Both over powered the meat. I'm wondering if I had the last piece and they covered things up with the extra seasoning from the bottom. My friend also ordered the pot roast and although hers was also chopped, she did not have as much thyme and rosemary- although she complained that it was too much. Next the greens tasted unseasoned and undercooked. The fried corn was not fried but were kernels of sweet corn in some type of cornstarch slurry - awful! The mashed potatoes are boxed but edible however the white gravy was not good. I missed on the menu that the gravy is white - it should be brown. Finally, we received a piece of cornbread- it was very dense but sweet. My friends liked it but I did not. My friends had a mix of feelings from "it was good" to "just ok but I won't take my left overs home." Needless to say I also did not take my left overs home. One saving grace about the meal was the fruit tea! It was delicious! I also ordered two chocolate covered strawberries for dessert and I wished I ordered more! Since it was four friends birthday- the singer (yes there was live music) called out their names and sang a rendition of "Happy Birthday". This same singer had the room up and dancing on several song! She did a wonderful job. Plus the restaurant provided a free dessert to each of the four birthday friends! They all enjoyed their desserts! So the verdict... the venue is beautiful and a vibe for a Saturday night but unfortunately I won't return for the good. There are much better spots for soul food at much cheaper price point!

My friends and I were always lucky to snag a table for us those times. But coming in the morning is really pleasant. I've only gotten coffee here in the past, so this time we got food. We were planning on sharing that crepe with another friend, but that crepe was so good we demolished it haha. We ended up ordering the Spinach Pesto crepe to share for later instead. But wow, I have nothing but praise for these crepes because they blew me away. The Berries and Cream crepe was just amazing. Fruits tasted fresh and juicy. The crepe itself was perfectly sweet. And the whipped cream cheese filling inside was light and creamy. I couldn't ask for more in a fruit crepe. Also the light drizzle of sweetened condensed milk on top? Chef's kiss. And then we tried the Spinach and Pesto crepe. It had all my favorite things inside, so of course I loved it. I loved the savory pesto spread inside the crepe, the spinach, ricotta, and parmesan cheese sprinkled on top. The tomatoes added a nice acidity to balance and the balsalmic glaze tied it all together on top. It felt like applause roared in my mouth. Also I can't forget the Pistachio Croffin I ate too. It had great texture, and had that subtle nutty flavor from the pistachio. I really liked it. Anyways, I'm a big Morning Brew fan.
