    Shrimp & Grits

Was in the area with work and stopped in for dinner. Loved the area and the atmosphere of the restaurant. Was seated at a high top close to the bar, service was slow for the amount of people in the restaurant. I had the shrimp and grits, they were okay, nothing really special about them. I would definitely go back, just probably try something different.

We stopped at Cambridge Square, a fun shopping and dining area. The people were enjoying the local boutiques, and restaurants, making it a perfect spot to explore and relax. For dinner, we chose 1885 Grill, a charming restaurant known for its fresh seafood and classic Southern dishes. From the moment we walked in, we were greeted warmly by the staff, setting the tone for a wonderful dining experience. The service was exceptional--our server was attentive, friendly, and made sure we had everything we needed throughout the meal (many drink refills). The food was delicious. We enjoyed a Cesar salad with grilled shrimp and shrimp and grits. The combination of great food, welcoming service made our meal at 1885 Grill a great way to end a busy day.

We so wanted this to be a winner, but unfortunately it wasn't. None of the items we ordered were above average. We looked hard to find the rosemary on the fries without finding more than a speck. The lemon in the dressing on the salad was not detectable. The empanadas were average. And the crab bisque was fishy. Now the positive. We were greeted by a very friendly and welcoming hostess who made us feel very welcome. And the interior was adorable. Loved all the wood and brick. Kitchen, do better.

Mac and cheese and baked potato were delicious. I ordered my steak medium well but it came overcooked and dry. Fried green tomatoes were mushy but the hush puppies and wings were perfect and delicious. Staff was friendly and atmosphere was great.

Grilled veggies ($4.50) and coleslaw ($3.50): both delicious

Uh...so....delicious? Not really sure why I'm shocked, but I am. I never eat in Ooltewah, ever, but a friend was visiting and she wanted to go, so we went. What a huge blunder on my part for living here so long and never eating in 1885 until now. So let's run down the list: Coleslaw: a little vinegary, a little saucey, a little crunchy, a lotta good. Grilled veggies: still crisp, not mushy, coulda had a bit more grilled flavor, but still delicious. Pricey, though; basically averages $1 per slice of vegetable. Feta scallion mashed potatoes: yes. Kind of perfect? Just get them. Mac and cheese: the most surprising thing I ate. Actually really good, and not just by restaurant standards. Seasoned, creamy, cheesy. I dunno what it is, but I always have to try the Mac n cheese if it's on the menu. 100% of the time, it's disappointing (even for restaurant standards), but not at 1885. I'm gonna have a hard time not ordering this every time I come. Mushroom & grits: who invented this?! Who is in the kitchen?! The grit cakes--crispy on the outside, creamy on the inside! The sauce--lemony and creamy! Piping hot when it comes to the table! We ALSO got the bread pudding dessert to go. Heated it up in the toaster oven and topped it with the caramel sauce. I'm glad we didn't eat this in the restaurant cos I might have asked to speak with the chef to smack him in the face. ALSO, we got there a little late--about 830, and they close at 9. We didn't realize that, but honestly should have guessed since it's Ooltewah. But everyone was so kind, welcoming, gracious. Our waiter was on it, didn't rush us. We left close to 9:30. I gave him a nice tip. Have I not said enough?

There's plenty of parking nearby so you don't have to walk far. This neat beer bar reminds me of the crowler shops that you used to find around Atlanta, with around 30 taps containing about a thrid local beer, so you can sample several local breweries without visiting each one (they're mostly not too near each other so this is very convenient). The taproom "beertender" seemed to be fairly knowledgeable regarding the various offerings - there's also a convenient list highlighting the different beers with style notes. We sat at the bar and were able to bring in some food from the nearby restaurants (I grabbed some wings at the nearby Marthie Ann's which were excellent). To drink I tried Hoptown's own Orange Mango Wheat - a somewhat basic wheat beer with hings of sweet tangerine and mango - nothing special. I had a Maine Brewing "Lunch" with the wings which is always a winner - it's an exceptional New England IPA. Service was great - I can see myself hitting Ooltewah just to come by for a break in driving.

So we arrive just about 15 minutes early but were immediately seated. It was a bit confusing about where the host stand is since there are two entrances... but no problem because the owner was at the bar to greet us. The customer service is top tier! The venue is beautiful! But the food ... left something to be desired. I ordered the pot roast based on recommendations from the waiter. He also recommended the greens over the green beans. I also added a side of mashed potatoes and fried corn. So first, the plate came out messy (see pic). It would have only taken a second to wipe off the edge of the plate. Then the pot was appeared shredded and covered in thyme and rosemary. Both over powered the meat. I'm wondering if I had the last piece and they covered things up with the extra seasoning from the bottom. My friend also ordered the pot roast and although hers was also chopped, she did not have as much thyme and rosemary- although she complained that it was too much. Next the greens tasted unseasoned and undercooked. The fried corn was not fried but were kernels of sweet corn in some type of cornstarch slurry - awful! The mashed potatoes are boxed but edible however the white gravy was not good. I missed on the menu that the gravy is white - it should be brown. Finally, we received a piece of cornbread- it was very dense but sweet. My friends liked it but I did not. My friends had a mix of feelings from "it was good" to "just ok but I won't take my left overs home." Needless to say I also did not take my left overs home. One saving grace about the meal was the fruit tea! It was delicious! I also ordered two chocolate covered strawberries for dessert and I wished I ordered more! Since it was four friends birthday- the singer (yes there was live music) called out their names and sang a rendition of "Happy Birthday". This same singer had the room up and dancing on several song! She did a wonderful job. Plus the restaurant provided a free dessert to each of the four birthday friends! They all enjoyed their desserts! So the verdict... the venue is beautiful and a vibe for a Saturday night but unfortunately I won't return for the good. There are much better spots for soul food at much cheaper price point!

I ordered the Carne Asada, which is usually my "go to" when I eat at a mexican restaurant. Wait time wasn't so bad. The chips and salsa were good too, the tortilla chips were crunchy and salsa was flavorful. But unfortunately, my Carne Asada fell flat. I asked the beef to be cooked at medium but the beef was tough and overcooked. I was surprised at how dry it was. There were some pieces of the beef that were decent, but overall just too overcooked and dry for me. It was pretty disappointing actually for my first time here. Service was great, they were attentive and checked up on us from time to time. I just felt like the Carne Asada price at $17.99 did not correlate with the quality of meat at all. The other sides were good, like the avocado, beans and rice. And the overall portion size was great too. But for the dish as a whole, I can't justify the price for that. I've been to other mexican restaurants in the area with better Carne Asada that I'd choose in a heartbeat. Despite that experience, I'd come back here but I'd definitely order something else.

Better than silence so thick you can hear your own regrets. Food showed up quick, which is about all you can ask when you're hungry enough to consider eating the menu. And it was good--honest good. Not "tell your mama about it" good, but solid, dependable, "yep, I'd order that again" good. Prices didn't make you feel like you'd just financed somebody's boat, either. Beer was cold--like it ought to be, like it better be--and the waitress understood to be there exactly when we needed her and vanishing when we didn't. That's an art form.
