I got the salmon with green beans and ground grits. I had no idea ground grits comes fried, which was a bit of a bummer considering there is no description to show the ground grits come fried. On the bright side, my salmon and the green beans were delicious. I had some of my husband's shrimp Alfredo and it was incredible! Was in the area with work and stopped in for dinner. Loved the area and the atmosphere of the restaurant. Was seated at a high top close to the bar, service was slow for the amount of people in the restaurant. I had the shrimp and grits, they were okay, nothing really special about them. We so wanted this to be a winner, but unfortunately it wasn't. None of the items we ordered were above average. We looked hard to find the rosemary on the fries without finding more than a speck. The lemon in the dressing on the salad was not detectable. The empanadas were average. And the crab bisque was fishy. Now the positive. Ordered online for curbside pickup. Arrived when food was reported to be ready-checked in to let them know I was there; waited about 12 minutes then went in. Told hostess I was pickup up, she walked straight to a room and carried out my order. So why do they say stay in your car if they're NOT going to bring it to you? Also I called before ordering to ask if the shrimp is "butterflied" and the girl had NO clue what I was asking. Great spot off of I-75. Found on Yelp and it's didn't disappoint. Sat at the bar as I was by myself and Casper was my bartender/server. He did a great job attending to the almost full bar. Uh...so....delicious? Not really sure why I'm shocked, but I am. I never eat in Ooltewah, ever, but a friend was visiting and she wanted to go, so we went. What a huge blunder on my part for living here so long and never eating in 1885 until now. So let's run down the list: Coleslaw: a little vinegary, a little saucey, a little crunchy, a lotta good. Grilled veggies: still crisp, not mushy, coulda had a bit more grilled flavor, but still delicious. Pricey, though; basically averages $1 per slice of vegetable. Feta scallion mashed potatoes: yes. Kind of perfect? Just get them. Mac and cheese: the most surprising thing I ate. Actually really good, and not just by restaurant standards. Seasoned, creamy, cheesy. I dunno what it is, but I always have to try the Mac n cheese if it's on the menu. 100% of the time, it's disappointing (even for restaurant standards), but not at 1885. I'm gonna have a hard time not ordering this every time I come. Mushroom & grits: who invented this?! Who is in the kitchen?! The grit cakes--crispy on the outside, creamy on the inside! The sauce--lemony and creamy! Piping hot when it comes to the table! We ALSO got the bread pudding dessert to go. Heated it up in the toaster oven and topped it with the caramel sauce. I'm glad we didn't eat this in the restaurant cos I might have asked to speak with the chef to smack him in the face. ALSO, we got there a little late--about 830, and they close at 9. I sat at the bar and had dinner. Service was excellent atmosphere pretty lively for a Tuesday night. The food was very tasty. I thought the entrée was a bit on the small side. I had the shrimp and crawfish étouffée. Only four medium size shrimp on the dish. I normally see 6 to 8 shrimp, at other restaurants for this type of dish. But the price was reasonable. Just went to this restaurant and ordered grilled salmon which arrived charred and inedible. Sent it back and never got a replacement. My husband finished his meal completely and I never got mine. The waiter never apologized, came back, or even made eye contact with us again. We decided to just leave. We had a great night at 1885 Grill celebrating New Years Eve! We had reservations for a party of 6 and was sat promptly on arrival! I would recommend to make reservations for small or large parties as this place does tend to get busy. They have seating upstairs and downstairs, a bar, and outdoor seating so there is a lot of options for everyone. The bathrooms are open to the kitchen (by way of window) which I found odd but neat too. Just something about looking in the kitchen while going to the bathroom just hit me strange but I it really is here nor there. We ordered two appetizers, the fried oysters and the pimento cheese with fried okra! The fried oysters were nothing but breading and very (very, very) little oysters! The breading was really good but definitely missing a key component of the appetizer! The pimento cheese and okra was on point and I couldn't stop eating it! The adults did partake in beverages and I must highly recommend the pomegranate martini! It is on the sweeter side of drinks but it found it very refreshing, flavorful, and the just right amount of fruit vs. alcohol. My father had a margarita and he said that it was a "nice drink"! ‍ Onto the entrees! We hard a variety of options so everyone was pleased and could easily find something that they would like! My daughter had been snacking all day so she got the Sausage Gumbo- very flavorful and bountiful ingredients! She also got a side of those house made fries. I may have stolen a few!! Phillie Cheesesteak was a great handheld option! The waitress recommended it and it didn't disappoint a hungry husband who had been working hard labor all day. Take note that this is a FILET cheesesteak so it is next level from a regular cheesesteak elsewhere. My mom got the Salmon Filet! I think she could probably judge a salmon cooking competition because I think that is all she ever gets when we dine out! She also got the fresh vegetables and there wasn't a bite left on the plate! I think the salmon was a winner in her book. Though, I think she was still disappointed over the fried oysters. I got the Southern Fried Chicken! Let me tell you something, I ate every single morsel of food on my plate! The chicken was nicely fried and crisp! Not over done and not under cooked. I like my chicken with some crunch or I cannot consider is "southern" or truly fried but if it is too fine then you get a burnt flavor. The creole gravy stole the show though! SO GOOD! Even after I finished off the chicken, I was lapping it up over the mashed taters and green beans. I could have used some bread as an accompaniment but I improvised with the remainder of my kids grilled cheese (which was also pretty good)! We did not opt for dessert as we were on the hunt for ice cream and they not have any on their menu. I would also like to highlight our service. I know during COVID times and a holiday evening, I had not set high expectations but I must say that they well exceeded normal service standards. She was prompt with all of our requests, all items were correct and expedited! Overall, I give them a solid 5 stars. Had an 8:30pm reservation Friday night for six people. When we got to the bar (a little early), they were already cleaning up and counting money. We had to settle up there, no big deal but were rushed off to our table. It couldn't have been more obvious that they were trying to hurry us up. I guess everyone had somewhere to be. We tried the new hush puppy app with a sweet butter, they were really good and the butter was really good but for me I think I would have preferred just butter or something more savory. I have made the mistake multiple times of getting home without checking my bag, and being highly disappointed with missing items. 95% of my to go orders have had missing sides (that cost extra), condiments, salads, salad add-ons, salad dressing, etc. I don't feel like I should have to go back inside to ask for missing items for every to go order. For the price these items cost, the service really needs to step it up. read more

Had a really nice lunch here on Fourth of July. We were happy to find 1885 open on the holiday when most of the other restaurants on the Square were closed. 1885 looks a lot more impressive and fancy from the outside than it does on the inside. Decor was decent but much more casual than I was expecting from the exterior. The menu had plenty of options to satisfy our whole party. We especially enjoyed the hot chicken sandwich. We asked for the creolenaise the side and the hot honey was also served on the side. I feel like the chicken itself wasn't spicy and it was only the hot honey that made it a hot chicken sandwich. This is great if you want to control the spicy in your food. I put the creolenaise on my half of the sandwich and I couldn't really tell if it made a difference or not so I'd say leave it on. Others in my party had the crab disk the chargrilled cheeseburger and the rosemary fries. The rosemary fries were definitely a hit and everybody loved those. Overall, it was a nice lunch and I would definitely go back. I'd be interested to see what the upstairs looks like next time read more

I'm iffy on this review for a few reasons. Our server was amazing and so kind. The staff was remarkable. But the food was definitely lacking something. I ordered blackened trout which was mediocre and the grilled veggies which were bland and a 0/0. The baked potato was great but needed more toppings. The scallop appetizer was AMAZING BUT, for $17, we should have gotten more than two scallops. That's a rip off. Altogether, it was just a meh experience. read more
