When it comes to sports bars, Oceanside, California has many for local patrons to enjoy…read more One of the better destinations is also the oldest sports bar known as the Red Rooster. Red Rooster sports bar has been serving the community of Oceanside for over 60 years. Even though they recently had a change of ownership, the new owners are also local and they left local management in charge. This effectively means that nothing has changed, and they are still providing some of the best bar, food and ambience, as well as drinks! They just cleaned up the bathrooms and a little bit of the interior decor. When it comes to food, the Red Rooster is known for their famous Rooster Burger. This burger is legendary within the community. I also love their crispy fries that are well seasoned. More recently, they have also added $.69 chicken wings on Wednesdays. This deal is available with the purchase of a beer. They also have cider available as well. Although they have a few basic flavors on their regular chicken wing menu, on Wednesdays, they add a lot more flavors to the special. These sauce, flavors alternate weekly, and it adds a nice variety. Most recently, I enjoyed the teriyaki, the bourbon bbq, honey mustard, general tso and my favorite is the lemon pepper. The interior looks much like a divey sports bar, equipped with one pool table and a few high-table seating available. There is also a backyard seating area with a fire pit, that is also fenced off. Overall, I highly recommend visiting the Red Rooster at least once to experience their burger, their chicken wings, and a small piece of historic Oceanside vibes.

I recently came to this area of central downtown Oceanside & what was previously known as Secco, is…read morenow another wine bar called The Meantime. They slightly remodeled the interior and added a couch area to the rear, which gives it a sort of "lounge" vibe. But to accomplish this, there is no longer space for a pool table (which was previously there). There's also a big screen projection television. A sports game was playing at the time. I'm not entirely sure if their menu is complete, but they have an assortment of reds, whites, drafts, cocktails (soju-based), about 20 beers on tap and a few bites (including a smashburger, quesadilla, a burrito, grilled cheese sandwich & now Argentina Empanadas). It's important to take note that there's no kitchen immediately on-site. Honestly, I don't know what to make of this place. I can only guess that the old branding wasn't working, so they swapped up some interior, slapped on some paint and added 2 projection screens? The service was fast, friendly & helpful, thank goodness! The bathrooms were clean at the time of use. But this location appears to lack a sense of identity. The interior wants to say "cozy wine bar". But then they're serving burgers and have sports on the tv. It's all very confusing. I would wish they would pick-a-lane and just focus on that aspect. It appears that this place will be a "fine wine bar", that may have tapas & small bites, but currently carries bar-style foods. The high-tables seat couples or pairs of twos. Since I know they're still working out the kinks, I'll come back later and hope that they come to a focal point on what they want to bring to the dining scene in the downtown area. As it stands, I would really recommend The Meantime to those who want to socialize over some wine, but desire a less populated or crowded scene. So, maybe good for an "after dinner sip" spot or social hangout with no expectation of a big dinner & for the selected sports games.

Come here and expect good vibes with local folks the love a good watering hole. Come, enjoy beer on top, a few finger foods, a dartboard, pinball games and their pool tables. With over 6 televisions, this is also a great place to watch sports game events. They just opened and did not have their food ready and I was told it should be by next week. They are also dog-friendly. Overall, I can really appreciate the cleanup and revamp that they did to this establishment and it is no longer a "dive bar". I still have mixed feelings about this, but I'm happy with my experience overall and I can definitely appreciate the clean bathrooms. The only big con that I saw here was that the parking is tight and it's difficult on crowded nights. If you can't find any parking within their lot, feel free to park on the next side of the building by Dunkin' Donuts and take the short walk over. Management also said that they're working on lowering the brightness level of the lights and that should bring a more intimate vibe. I can't wait to come back here when the food is up and ready, so I revamp my review.

They had fantastic bartenders and menu, but the speakeasy concept has been outdated for a while. Now, a Honky Tonk is a very different, good thing. The tunes are something North County has been wanting, but been missing in favor of larger venue DJ's, but the juke box here has been curated with classics. It's far too small to dance unless you're slow or maybe 2 stepping in the corner. The ambiance is dim, relaxed, fun. The drinks are just as good as some of the top bars around, helmed by Wyatt who you may remember from Switchboard and KNVS is a staple in Oceanside. Prices are excellent, staff is great. While you can get a cocktail here, you don't have to. A classic shot and a beer is just as likely to be had here as a stemmed glass proper cocktail. When it's jamming it is near a standing room all the way around. No doorman asking for a password, no re-entry on nights when Heritage are open (Monday is this exception). We visit at least once a month with friends from the nearby climbing gym, and always with our 6-year-old in tow who LOVES this place thanks to all the games there are to play. My favorite go-to menu item is the crunch wrap with carne asada - it's large so my husband and I usually split it. Their salsa is bomb, too (especially the green). We've also had some of their burgers, tacos, and our daughter always gets a personal pizza. The personal pizza scenario is the only thing I have beef with here - you get a 7" plain cheese pizza for $12, and you can add a max of 3 toppings which cost extra, so in the end our kid's food is more expensive than ours. Hey Fat Joe's - pleeeease considering adding a small pizza to the kid's menu and price it closer to the other $7 and $8 items!! The interior walls of Fat Joe's are decorated with art and murals of all the most important and beloved features of our city. The bartenders are friendly and efficient - drinks are poured/mixed and handed off quickly, and food arrives at your table shortly after. Bathrooms are always well-stocked and clean. Parking is pretty much limited to street parking and while it is limited, we've never had an issue finding a spot nearby. Finding solid family-friendly spots can be in short supply, but Fat Joe's hits all my criteria and remains one of our favorite spots to eat and spend time together.
