I returned around the time I was given, but the person opening that section was running late, so I ended up waiting an additional 5-10 minutes. After waiting, I was disappointed to find that the selection was fairly limited, with most of the CDs and vinyl focused on older rock and alternative music. I was hoping to find a wider variety of genres. On the positive side, the staff were very nice, and there is a large parking lot out front, which makes parking convenient. Overall, I think this is a great bookstore, but if you're specifically visiting for the records and CDs, you may want to manage your expectations. I was pleasantly surprised when we came in and at least 20+ cats were up and playing. The yoga teacher was very friendly and nice. She ended up teaching more of an advanced yoga class and it was a little hard for me to keep up with all of the new yoga poses. Unfortunately, it was one of those random hot days in Oakland where it was about 85 that day. Inside doing yoga and having the cooling system not fully on for the class, made it a bit uncomfortable. Other than that, it was a great experience. The cats were too funny with their own little personalities. I wanted to take them all home!

I had the intention of adopting a dog today which I saw on the website. It didn't say on the website that he was neutered YESTERDAY. I visited the dog in person without knowing that and loved how sweet he was and we bonded instantly. When I committed to taking him home I wasn't aware he was JUST neutered. I thought maybe it was recent but not yesterday. I had already agreed to taking him home though, and I felt bad that he just had surgery and was in the shelter. Very sweet love bug but I also cannot commit to all of the long list of after care requirements of the surgery when it is that new and I didn't know what I was getting myself into fully. They didn't even give him his medication for the day when I picked him up around 1:30 pm. I forgot the medication there and no one called me to let me know. It's so hard to reach the staff members. The voicemail boxes are full, no one answers and there is no general number to the shelter where you can speak to someone. I didn't get a cone and they only offered medication for like a day. Not only that, the dog had a lot of separation anxiety that was making me anxious. I didn't want to say that because I didn't want to hurt the dog's chances of adoption asap. I was not prepared to deal with that much anxiety post surgery either. I had the dog for maybe 4 hours. He had time away from the shelter, had treats, was cuddled, and I even bought him a cute collar that made him look so handsome. When I dropped the dog off, one officer treated me like I've had the dog his whole life and like I was abandoning him, and made me feel really uncomfortable and guilty. She said, "go up to the counter and tell them exactly the reason you told me for returning him", reprimanding me. At least I brought the dog back before he got extremely attached which was happening quickly and I only had the dog for a few hours??? And the way she tried to shame me in front of the other staff was totally uncalled for and inappropriate for the situation. I help this shelter any time I can and to treat me like a piece of crap that was abandoning a dog was not cool.

She absolutely loves this place and has spoken so highly of it that I was excited to visit myself, as I have been wanting to adopt a cat. My sister is a huge animal lover. We grew up with dogs, currently have two dogs in our family, and one of them was adopted from a shelter. She also loves volunteering and supporting local businesses. This place has been somewhere she genuinely enjoys visiting. When we arrived today, there were no staff members around, but my sister knew her way around because she visits so frequently. While my sister and I were petting a cat in the office, we came out and overheard an older woman speaking to my sister's supportive living caregiver, stating that my sister was banned from the establishment. The way this situation was handled was completely unacceptable. Rather than speaking privately with the caregiver, this employee chose to discuss a serious accusation in a public area, directly in front of my sister, who was clearly confused and upset by what was happening. The employee accused my sister of abusing the cats, which is an extremely serious allegation. My sister immediately apologized and became visibly distressed because this is one of her favorite places to visit. We asked to speak with someone in a higher position to better understand what had happened. When the employee eventually came out with another staff member at the front desk, we were told that during my sister's previous visit on Saturday, she had allegedly been aggressive with a cat. We were then told to leave, without being given a meaningful opportunity to discuss the situation, understand the concerns, or explain anything from our perspective. We were treated as though we had done something criminal rather than as people trying to understand a serious situation. At one point, we were told, and I quote, "It has nothing to do with her disability." However, the way this situation was communicated and handled raises very real concerns about disability awareness, staff training, and how individuals with disabilities are treated at this establishment. If staff observed behavior that they believed was inappropriate around an animal, they could have calmly explained the concern, provided guidance on how to interact safely with the cats, and worked with her caregiver to ensure future visits were appropriate. Instead, the response was to ban her and dismiss our attempts to understand what had happened. My sister explained that she had taken a break from petting the cat, but that the cat appeared scared when they entered the room. I cannot independently verify everything that happened during the previous visit, but that is precisely why a respectful conversation would have been appropriate. I also found it concerning that there were no staff members visibly present when we arrived today and that visitors appeared able to walk into different rooms without supervision. If proper animal handling and visitor supervision are priorities, there should be clear expectations and staff available to communicate them. My biggest issue is not simply that my sister was banned. It is how the entire situation was handled. Animal welfare is important, and staff absolutely have a responsibility to protect the cats. However, that responsibility does not excuse publicly humiliating a visitor, making serious accusations without a respectful discussion, or failing to communicate concerns appropriately with a person who has a disability and their caregiver. Instead of immediately resorting to a permanent ban, why not explain the proper way to pet and interact with the cats? Why not work with the caregiver to help ensure that everyone can have a safe and positive experience? If there was a genuine concern about a cat's safety, it could have been addressed in a way that was both firm and compassionate. My sister deserves to be treated with dignity and respect, just like any other visitor. She should not leave a place she loves feeling confused, ashamed, and heartbroken because of the way staff chose to handle a situation. Based on this experience, I would not recommend this establishment to people looking to adopt a cat or spend time with animals, particularly families concerned about how visitors with disabilities or special needs may be treated. I would also be hesitant to support a business whose staff demonstrated so little compassion and professionalism in handling such a sensitive situation. I sincerely hope management takes this feedback seriously, reviews how this incident was handled, and considers how staff can better communicate with visitors with disabilities and their caregivers in the future. For $20 an hour (the funds go directly to the cats' expenses) you can play with them all you'd like! The volunteers were super friendly and informative, introducing us to each cat, telling us their backstories, and explaining their demeanors. They also gave us treats to lure the cats in and I had a blast seeing all the different personalities come to life. The cool thing about this place is they're a non-profit organization run by volunteers, and all the cats are up for adoption! There are also volunteer opportunities if you're interested. They have a stamp card system where if you visit a certain amount of times, you get a free visit. So if this place sounds like it's up your alley, come pay a visit! You won't be disappointed.

PRO-TIP: There's a discount for students, so if you want to be surrounded by some feline friends while you study or relax, great place to do so. You can hang your coat on the rack and there's a mini shelf area for your shoes. So you gotta walk in with socks! With each visit you can either get a hot cup of tea or a cold can or box drink from their fridge (sparking water, juices, etc.). Very refreshing and you can enjoy it in the cat area too. I own cats so there's nothing new. I'm horribly allergic to the cat that specifically lives in my house, but I didn't get an allergy here, meaning that the cats are clean and well taken for. My favorite was a large sleepy orange boy, Ron (permanent non-adoptable resident) that was hanging out next to me the entire time.
