This review is for Placer SPCA'S Vet Clinic on 150 Tahoe Ave, Roseville, CA 95678. EUREKA!!! No more getting ripped off for pet services which tends to be quite competitive in Roseville. We finally found our home sweet home for our 2 labradors, Chuck and Luke. Bit of a drive from the northern side of Roseville, but totally worth it. Neutering/spaying services - we searched the highest peaks and lowest ravines to find an affordable and competent Vet clinic that isn't out to take advantage of Roseville locals for huge profits. We filled out forms to be put on the waitlist and it did take some time to hear back, but the wait was totally worth it. Cheapest price, by far, and no complications post surgery. Vaccine services - most affordable vaccines in Roseville, hands down, with a comprehensive list of services and vaccines available on their Vet Clinic site. Process is simple. Go on their Placer SPCA website, find the service you're looking for, fill out the necessary forms, and simply be patient until they contact you. Service is incredible, staff is very compassionate and loves animals more than humans (precisely what you want) although they are kind to all walking and rolling creatures, and most importantly their prices are fair and the most affordable near and around the Roseville area. Parking can get rough as they're in the middle of a residential area, so get there early. Sacramento SPCA is great too but it's a bit of a drive for Roseville folks. We're so ecstatic that we finally have a Vet clinic to call home for our extended family, Chuck and Luke! Unless something drastic changes, we'll be going to Placer SPCA's Vet Clinic for all matters related to our furry kids. read more

Parking is lousy. Some of the staffs have moody/grumpy attitudes. Called and left messages several times no response I don't think anybody ever answers the phone. Called so many times with no answer. This place is definitely mismanaged! I can't appreciate what this place is trying to do, but it makes it so difficult on the adoption process. I was interested in a dog and wanted to put my name there so when it got out of quarantine they could call me... Nope, they wouldn't do it. read more

The process you have implemented of making appts to adopt and animal is not efficient and it is sad because some people don't have the flexibility of making appts. No wonder we have such an influx of pets that don't get adopted. My son and his wife lost their kitty and they went there just to visit and give some kitties some attention to help get over their grief. You have to have an appt to give these poor animals attention? This is the most ridiculous and sad thing I've ever heard. It is cruel. Also why would I make an appt to see only one pet when I may not be compatible with that pet. I Would want to see several until I find one that is compatible. read more

Need I say all the animals here are on medication to keep them sweet, calm, nice, and for you to think they are just 'sleepy'. Many adopters can vouch that when they take their adoptee home, their new animal comes off of the medications and starts to become crazy etc. This was not the same dog you met at the shelter, right? Because they are all overloaded on medication. This is supposed to be nonprofit, but they adopt their animals out on insane prices. $500 for an adult dog, crazy much? You have to make an appointment to even be able to see a dog, if slots are booked out for the day Goodluck getting that dog you came so early for. Facility is really clean and maintained. Dogs are always sleepy due to the insane number of medications they are given, so the facility is fairly quiet. They seem to have a low number of euthanasia, which is another great thing. The new building they built has made the parking lot to only have about 10 spots. Now you have to find street parking. Sometimes people just want to come look at dogs too, front staff are very adamant about why you are there for. read more

I adopted a beautiful Siamese from these dear people today. The adoption fee was minimal for all that I received: A spayed kitty who had an infection when brought in, which they treated. They were the ones that did the spaying. She also had an abcessed tooth which they extracted. The people were kind and the center was very clean. They let me handle the kitty before I finalized the adoption. I would highly recommend Placer SPCA. read more

Adopted this sweet girl about a few weeks ago. This was the nicest shelter i have been to and they are very honest about the animals past and their behavior. They are kept on calming meds in the shelter to reduce stress which i think is great however you should be prepared for them to be different if you decide to fully take the off the meds. This girl has anxiety in general so we just lowered her dose and she's a great dog! The only complaint i have is how they introduce the dogs when you bring yours in the meet the new one. the have them circle each other while on leashes which made my first dog especially stressed out and even mildly aggressive even though he is extremely sociable with other dogs and has never shown that behavior. When we got them both home and had them off leash they were perfectly fine. I'm not a dog behaviorist but i feel like they could definitely go about introductions a better way. read more

I honestly had a fantastic experience here, I just adopted my little boy this week and the process was quick, easy, but thorough! They gave me a lot of great information on the little guy I was adopting. On top of that, the process was very straightforward which I really liked, it showed me it was a reliable process. I made an appointment day before to go see my little guy, got there and got to spend 45 minutes to an hour with him and then adopted him! The lady who was with me while I was meeting my cat was a beautiful soul! Such a great person to talk to, gave me a lot of good information even on things she didn't necessarily have to give me like she told me about better cat foods, and more. I really enjoyed speaking with her, I am very sad I don't remember her name. Based on every employee I met there, I can tell they have a great care for animals. The vibrance coming from everyone was beautiful. I wish I could've adopted every little kitty in there but I honestly feel like I was matched up with the perfect little guy for me and my boyfriend! Although my kitty found a home, there are a lot of cats & dogs & other animals in there that need homes that have been there longer than my boy. I strongly encourage you to adopt if you love animals and are stable enough to do so! Give these babies a home! This is my boy, his name was Max but we renamed him Bean! I'm upping my rating to 4 stars because after I wrote my review, Courtney, from SPA contacted me via Yelp and referred me to Tami. Tami, was so helpful and she told me about a new program that SPCA offered. They have a new program in which they offer a voucher which you could use towards spaying your dog! I was super elated and hopeful! I was able to get a voucher after filling out the proper forms and I was elated when she gave me a voucher for $120 off of a spay & neuter! SCORE! I called around and much to my dismay, most won't accept the voucher and if they do, the cost of spaying was outrageous. BOO!!! When you can catch this place open during business hours, they are wonderful. From the communication over the phone (they are helpful and reassuring). To then going in, they were warm and welcoming. You see these things are important when dealing with potentially sensitive situations, which may or may not include turning in stray kittens that I may or may not have grown attached to. It is clear as crystal that the staff are genuine in how they care for animals and that this isn't only about a paycheck. I'm eager to be in a position to cut them a donation check. We adopted a dog this past weekend, Venus. We are so excited to add another dog to our pack! Everyone at Placer SPCA is great. I put in the request to meet Venus, and within a couple days I was contacted to set up an appointment. Unfortunately, when we arrived the appointment did not get logged into the computer system, but thankfully the same time slot was available. Linda, the volunteer who introduced my husband and I to Venus really took the time to get to know us and explain more about Venus' background. She really cared about Venus going to a good home which speaks to Linda's character and Placer SPCA having people who actually care about the animals work at the shelter. I really wanted Venus to meet our other two dogs to make sure it was going to be a good fit. We had a bad experience at another shelter, which was of no fault of the other shelter. But it was important to me that all of the dogs had an introduction. Brittany, was awesome in gathering staff to help with the introduction. Let me state that as a disabled person whom has had cats as pets since I was a child and have adopted all of my cats, this place really takes the cake! We had to put down our last cat due to illness and I took it really hard. Didn't think I'd ever get another cat, but I was super lonely and depressed. The Placer SPCA is closest to our home in CH (the Sacramento SPCA is abt 1 hour away). I looked up their website, looked at the available cats and all of the policies regarding adoption and surrender (in case it didn't work out). I had never adopted an adult cat before, always kittens. So, this was new territory for me and I was nervous. I adopted a male grey that they stated was 8.5yrs old. Wonderful! I'm a senior, so I don't need to be running around after a kitten! Got this guy home and he was ok for a bit as he was getting acclimated to his new surroundings. He had his own room w/all of his stuff in it (bed, covered litter box, toys, food & water). Everything was fine until we realized that he hated to be picked up and I couldn't get him crated for his vet appt. This presented an issue: if I couldn't get him to the vet, how was he supposed to stay up to date on shots and getting his nails trimmed? I called the SPCA for help. They were no help. They told me every idea I had already tried (decades of experience w/cats). They had no new ideas on how to get the cat crated w/o getting myself seriously injured (I have very thin skin due to health issue). Because I was unable to crate him, I paid mucho dinero to have the travel vets come out to do a check-up and nail trim. No bueno!!! He hissed and swiped at them. They did state that he was presenting as a much younger cat. More like 3 than 8.5. Which we were already seeing for ourselves. He was a lovely cat, but way too young for an elder household. So sad. It took me awhile to finally get him crated due to various health issues that popped up. By that time, I had spoken to a mgr. named Brittney about the issues getting him crated. She was very nice and understanding. She stated to just bring him in to the surrender facility anytime, no charge. Finally got him in and dropped him off this past Monday -almost 2.5 months later. I was very stressed, anxious and distraught@this point. The cat was very distraught and stressed (he knew where he was). Then, they tried to charge me $100! On the website it's $35 for 1 animal! I balked, especially since I'm on fixed income and it's near the end of the month. $100 is a lot of $$$! Esp. when the SPCA didn't charge for the adoption. Add insult to injury: the lady supervisor there gave me Brittney's business card just for me to find out she's on vacation till next Monday. And, they didn't have me fill out the release of responsibility for the cat either. Didn't have me initial if he was a biter or if I wanted him back if they couldn't place him. I don't want him euthanized!!! But, if you change your mind (because they're going to euthanize), they charge you to pick the animal back up too! It's like a storage fee for the animal. Ridiculous! This is the only location out of Sacramento or the East Bay SPCA's that operates like this. BTW: they have a lot of their animals on anti-anxiety meds because many of them are so freaked out at the facility (my Dr. is a customer and he was informed of that by a staff member). We took the cat off of the meds because they were making him act erratic and destroying household objects (chewing). read more

I got both my cats at the SPCA. The service is always good and the workers are friendly. We came in and immediately we were able to visit some of the cats. The animals are well taken care of and the facility is clean. I got my resident cat at a different SPCA location but I got the little tortoiseshell at this facility. One thing that I disliked is the cats had colds in the room we went in. I did wash my hands as did my husband but my resident cat ended up getting the cold as did the one we ended up adopting. It wasn't the facility's fault the colds went away after a couple of days wasn't that big a deal but I wouldn't have gone in there if I had known. read more

Sadly, I see MANY reviews with the same underlying theme: THE ATTITUDE AND LACK OF RESPONSIVENESS OF THE STAFF so I am dropping my Google rating of two stars to one on Yelp. Repeated issues without resolution and change don't warrant the additional star the the wonderful volunteers helped garner for the Google review if management are aware of the staff problems. I really wish I could like this place. My first impressions of Placer SPCA were great! The volunteer greeter was so kind and gentle with my mom who had a stroke and a number of other issues a few years ago after my father passed. The volunteers in the kennels were wonderful. The trouble started with the front desk staff the day after we initially came for our visit. We made an appointment to see some older cats for a potential adoption for my mom, who recently lost a long term pet. It's not always easy to manage social outings for us as sometimes the unexpected happens socially, physically, and emotionally (after a stroke and other disability). We made an appointment to meet some cats, and needed to reschedule for later in the afternoon as I was just beginning a protracted medical treatment myself and my mom also was not ready. We called ahead of time to let the facility know we were running behind and assumed all was well based on the lack of call back. When we arrived, just under ten minutes late, nobody greeted us. Front desk staff were busy, but somehow unable to look up from the routine paperwork they were completing to greet us. We wandered to what appeared to be an appointment kiosk and I tried to see if we could check ourselves in (you can't). Seven minutes later, a visibly annoyed woman named Sara looked up from her computer and asked if she could help us. We said we'd been waiting and had an appointment. When we told her the time, she became even more annoyed saying they'd called out for us and then marked us as a no-show. I explained we'd been there for approximately seven minutes and had also called. Sara then exasperatedly said we should come back two hours later. I live a fair distance from my mother and coordinating her and my presence isn't always easy with traffic and medical conditions, and I expressed a desire to please be seen if we could. Sara then asked us WHY WE WERE LATE in front of staff and customers, to which I apparently was expected to explain medical conditions, neurological conditions, and whatever other embarrassing and private qualifiers Sara deemed worthy of being late. She eventually called for a volunteer to show us a cat room. My partner came into the room for a bit, and then walked around the facility. Sara, who'd apparently been so inattentive to our arrival that she didn't notice we were with my partner, opted to then begin gossiping about us in a different room with an older woman who was also a staff member IN FRONT OF MY PARTNER. My partner remained quiet to see how much Sara and the other staff member would say within earshot of customers. Extremely unprofessional. You're literally in one of the happiest places possible - working with pets and uniting pets with forever families, yet you lack the compassion and respect for people to have their own issues and retain their privacy. Even worse, staff talking poorly behind doors let alone within earshot of clients is abhorrent. One additional star for the wonderful volunteers. If only the desk staff had the cheer and spirit of the volunteers. We adopted, but absolutely don't plan on donating or recommending, which is sad since the pets are well loved and the volunteers are wonderful. read more

At that time was a street call Corporation Yard. Recently at Mandarin Festival this SPCA had a vendor booth. I ask of street name saying I been writing to Corporation Yard street not the street currently listed. Been getting letters of thank for the donation. The lady says that is Intake Facility. However the shelter is now on current street I asking about. So disappointing wasting time emotion and energy at this place. All the awful things I heard people are saying about this place are true. We had been excited for a week waiting to see a puppy day finally comes and after we fill out the application they go to open the door and then say, oh' this puppy is mouthy, instead of just warning me about it they say because it's mouthy you cannot adopt or even look at this dog because you have children. Not sure they're aware the dogs teeth. They think they know best and they're just draconian and authoritarian without cause. So you have these weird childless people trying to tell others what's best for their children. Look at these ultra liberal people that claim to be doing it because they are conservative, everything they said just didn't make sense. They couldn't be farther out of their lane. They're just trying to cover themselves from liability and operating out of fear no love. They don't care what's best for the dog or the family. What a disappointment for the whole family and these clowns don't even know how to take care of a puppy, it was three months old and they're acting like it has behavior issues and it's seven years old. If you're gonna have ridiculous restrictions, at least post it online or tell people upfront. I will be filing a formal complaint as well. read more

Staffing and service was great I will give them that, it was a clean environment, and at first it seemed like a really good place to adopt! I was looking for a small dog as a support animal for my grandfather since we lost our pup last year (had her for 10 years) . Now I've heard all the shelter/pound horror stories and how they treat their animals but i never thought this location would be anything close to that. I found cookie and she was super and I mean SUPER timid, very skiddish, quiet, all that. They told us she hadn't barked a single time in her stay of being there, which is a good sign for us as my grandparents live in a retirement home. Anyways, she had taken a liking to me and my boyfriend immediately so we meet her and she's very very calm, not roust nothing. Fast forward to taking her home she gets warmed up a bit and when I tell you this is the craziest chihuahua I have ever met. I love her to death dont get me wrong, but there is no way in all hell that they treated their animals with proper care if there is this big of a difference. For a while I thought she was reactive but nope, just crazy hyper. And it makes me think of how all the other animals are being treated. In conclusion, spca, please please please show ur babies love during their stay and make them happy, give them exercise! Feed them enough! Do everything you would do as if they were ur own pets! Definitely torn writing this review. Adopted a cat 4 days ago, and had to take her to an emergency vet yesterday, 8/14, as she is extremely sick with respiratory and gastrointestinal infections. I kept trying to call the SPCA earlier to let them know of her symptoms over the weekend, however they didn't pick up and they are closed on Mondays. The staff on site was great day of adoption, however I was told she had a clean bill of health. Now I'm stuck with a large vet bill. Definitely be cautious when adopting from here. Absolutely adopt if you can, but be aware that the animals may be sick and you'll be stuck with the cost after 72 hours of ownership. Also, the free vet visit included with adoption is hit or miss unless you're an established patient with that specific vet on the list. Was hoping to use this given the SPCA wouldn't answer, however the soonest appointment time was October. New kitty definitely couldn't wait that long. read more

No one returned my call and I called 3 times on the following Monday and no return phone call, so I drove there just to be told that the dog I wanted was adopted out that day! So my boyfriend & I have been in the talks of getting a dog for a few months, and kinda specifically he wanted a boxer, but we also knew we wanted to adopt. We decided to check out a few shelters and SPCA's in sacramento, including placer. Nonetheless we were feeling we were just not matching up with the dog we wanted so we stopped looking. Then the other night I decided to look on placer SPCA- low and behold they had a boxer since July and we had no idea! We decided to head there today and found him in his room, he immediately propped up when we saw him and came over. The staff was awesome and got us someone to help get him out so we can meet him. His story was awesome, the staff was super excited for us to meet and play with him. And then we decided to hold him until we could get all his new toys for him. The facility itself is clean, totally indoors and so much room for the animals to enjoy. It's honestly the nicest SPCA I've ever seen. The outdoor play area is nice n shaded too! Definitely super happy to adopt our pup from here and totally recommend coming here also! read more

The facility was nice and clean, the staff friendly and helpful and the adoption process was very easy. I only saw where they kept the dogs since we were there to adopt one. We are happy with our two-year old female pup... we adopted her on 2-2-13. Name was Drisca but we renamed her Cocoa. I am a senior adult who is a Breast Cancer survivor. I moved to California almost a year ago for my job. My family is back east so I am here alone. My doctor recommended that I get an animal. So, I went to the Placer SPCA to adopt a rescue instead of buying from a breeder or store. My coworker went with me and the SPCA person showed us the paperwork where the dog was surrendered by the family. She read the paperwork and stated they acquired him on September 26th, I believe and that he had only been in the shelter a day or 2. From the pictures below, you can see the dog I left a deposit on is not the same dog that I got -visually. His fur was cut drastically on his face without my knowledge or consent. I had to wait 2 weeks before he could be bathed or groomed! As you can see from the pictures, he looks really bad with matted fur and he smelled horrible. Also, I could not bath him for 2 weeks post surgery. So I used wipes to try and get some of the stench out of his fur. He defecated in his cage because of how he was previously kept before going to the shelter. When I brought him home, he did not eat the dog food that was given to me from SPCA. He appeared very depressed and traumatized but I worked with him and showered him with affection. I took him to Pet Express and got a really good high quality food which he loves. He really loves Just Food For Dogs! After 2 weeks, I took him to the groomer and made an appointment with one of the Vets from the SPCA Roseville recommended list that I was given. I mentioned to the Doctor that there seems to be a problem with his right hind leg and he is supposed to be 3 years old. The Doctor examined him and said he is closer to 5 years of age. He stated there is a problem with his leg where the bone is moving over the other bone. I called SPCA because I was shocked! I spoke with someone who stated that he came from another shelter and was a possible stray. WHAT!! I was told he was surrendered and lead to believe it was with SPCA. After the Vet visit I went immediately back up to SPCA and met with the manager. I explained everything to her. She took notes and said she was pass the information along but I probably would not get a refund. In the meantime, I contacted the Placer Animal Control to get more information on the dog I adopted. I was informed that 15 dogs were surrendered and his age on the paperwork that I received could be wrong. Lastly, I spoke with Kate McGinley, Senior Operations Manager with SPCA. She said the paperwork says "2.5 - 3 year old" even though I explained the paperwork is probably incorrect, per the person from Placer Animal Control, where SPCA Roseville got him from not to mention that there was no date on the paperwork. If he is 5 and I am over 55 years of age, the dog is supposed to be free per the website and documentation in the shelter. Ms. McGinley sent me an email that states I can return the animal for a full refund. Doesn't matter that I have had him for almost 4 weeks, nor the money I have spent and that he looks better now. You would think that since a Vet that was recommended by SPCA Roseville states the animal is closer to 5 years of age and the fact that the other shelter, he came from, said the paperwork could be wrong, she would do the best thing for animal. There were 15 dogs surrendered at one time and the age could be incorrect. Ms. McGinley also said I "had the option of not moving forward with the adoption" when I picked him up. However, when I originally left my deposit I was told that I would lose my deposit if I changed my mind and it could not be transferred to another animal. I also expressed extreme disappointment with the appearance and said I was not sure if I wanted him several times. The staff said the same thing as Ms. McGinley, the hair will grow back. Really, that's your response for drastically changing the animal. Then why wasn't that done in the beginning not after I left the deposit? I feel as if I have been scammed. Sure I can take him back and get a full refund. However, how do you think the dog would feel? He has just begun to run, play and be comfortable in his new home. Also, what about all the extra money I have already spent on grooming, food, cage, clothes, etc? He initially defecated in his cage because of where he came from and now he doesn't. I am really surprised how this is being addressed by Ms. McGinley at SPCA in Roseville. Everything points to this dog being older than what was stated on the paperwork. From the Vet that was recommended to the shelter where he came from, he is older than what is written on the paperwork. Ms. McGinley is unwilling to concede that it could just be a mistake. I was treated horribly by this location and now that some time has passed and I'm no longer angry in the moment, I feel I need to warn others. I brought a small litter of kittens in who were 3 weeks old when I found them. I had told them at the time I brought them that I was interested in adopting the one female kitten when she became old enough. They assured me that I would receive a call when that time came. I called at least 1-2 times a week to check on the progress of the kittens. None of these phone calls were logged like they were supposed to be apparently, but every time I called, I checked and the note that I was supposed to be adopting the female was still there. I called one Tuesday then and found out that since I had last spoken to them (less than a week prior), she had gone from not having a set spay date to having been spayed and then adopted out to someone else the very next day, which was the Friday before. Come to find out, the SPCA apparently realized they gave my kitten to a different family as soon as it was done and they did nothing to try and rectify the situation or notify me of it until I called and found out myself. Their idea of an apology? Trying to replace the kitten they gave to a different family with another one. Good to know that they believe that pets are so replaceable. I can support this location no longer after their horrendous mistake and their lackadaisical attitude towards doing anything to actually address the error they made. I had adopted two of my previous cats from here, but after the treatment I received here, no more. read more

Placer SPCA is at a nice location. The facility is clean, the staff is nice and helpful. The care the staff has for the dogs, cats, and bunnies fills my heart with joy. I got my Clementine here! We were greeted so nicely and the rooms for all the animals is so big and clean! I loved the cat rooms but I was super intent on getting a dog, hopefully a pup. With my luck, you guys had a pup that pulled my heart. The staff really helped me to pick out a leash and collar for her and even made a tag for her on the spot! I'm so happy with her now, and I know we have a bright and long future ahead of us thanks to you guys! read more

Absolutely ridiculous that you have to pay $25 before you can even see an animal that you are interested in. So thanks to all the losers who didn't keep their appointments and forced the SPCA to create this lame rule. If you don't show up then charge them but if you do keep your appointment then refund it as other businesses have done. I won't be using this shelter or recommending it. What a shame. read more

My husband and I have adopted two cats from the Placer SPCA over the past ten years; and they have since become comedians, faithful friends, and trusty alarm clocks for us. The SPCA staff is hardworking, friendly, and always at hand to answer questions about any of the animals in their care. I had been a volunteer at the SPCA's Roseville facility in the Cat Room a few years ago, but had to give that up when I returned to Sac State to finish my degree. I loved spending time with the cats there, and received ample training from Matt Green and the other staff members on how to correctly handle the cats, and how to interact with them and potential pet parents. Although, our household is only equipped to handle two kitties and one hound dog at a time; we both know that we will always look to Placer SPCA first in the event that we have a spot that opens up for a new member of our family. read more
