My story is about a cat who was dumped at a warehouse. FKCHS trapped the cat and provided needed medical care and placed the cat in foster care. When the cat was ready he was put up for adoption. That is where I met him. He is the sweetest little guy and is between 6-8 months old. I have had him 1 week and couldn't imagine life without him. This is just one story. There are so many more like this. The volunteers and staff are dedicated to providing the best for each cat in their care.

We visited the Folsom PetSmart genuinely intending to adopt a cat from Fat Kitty City Humane Society in El Dorado Hills. We dealt with Katrina Nopel, who presented herself as very familiar with the cats and their personalities. We explained that we were looking for a younger cat, roughly six months to a year or somewhat older. Katrina repeatedly directed us toward two very young kittens that we were not interested in. When we instead became interested in an older orange cat, Katrina described the cat as "skittish" and decided the cat would not be a good fit for our family. What concerned me is that Katrina barely knew us and had not meaningfully asked what temperament we actually wanted. What if a shy, cautious or independent cat is exactly what we were looking for? Not everyone wants an extremely active kitten. We interacted with the orange cat for approximately ten minutes. The cat approached my husband, played with him and was very friendly with him. We specifically said we understood that the cat could generally be skittish and still wanted to adopt her. Katrina nevertheless refused to allow us to proceed with that cat because she determined the cat wasn't right for us. When I called afterward to question the decision, I was then given a different reason: the cat needed to be adopted with its sibling. Katrina acknowledged to me that the cats were not a bonded pair, and they had not been presented or advertised to us as a required pair. She told me that adopting cats in pairs was something she planned to discuss at an upcoming organizational meeting. This experience left me genuinely concerned about Fat Kitty City's adoption process. A rescue representative should absolutely educate prospective adopters about a cat's personality and decline placements when there is a legitimate welfare concern. But I do not believe a representative should decide what personality an adopter should want without first learning what that adopter is actually looking for. I have formally raised this matter with Fat Kitty City leadership. The organization acknowledged my complaint and stated that it is reviewing what occurred. I will update this review when I receive the results of that review. My concern is ultimately for the cats--particularly older, shy or less outgoing cats that may already have fewer opportunities to find permanent homes. I sincerely hope Fat Kitty City reviews how these placement decisions are being made.

Because we were deep in Covid times, it was hard to get in contact with any adoption agencies. Lapcats was the first one to get back to us. We were interested in two bonded brothers. They were a little younger than we wanted (1.5 years old), but we were able to take them home for a 2 week trial period to see if they'd work in our little household. The night we brought them home was the night we decided to keep them. Our cats are little trouble makers, but they are also so dang well-behaved and socialized incredibly well. Sometimes (I mean always) I watch reels of other cats and I think of how wonderful my cats are. They don't bite, scratch, or hiss. They don't tear up furniture or eat plants. They don't even care about human food. Obviously, they aren't perfect. They both have the worst smelling farts known to man, and they have a tendency to always get in the way and get stepped on or kicked. Aside from that, we really lucked out with our little silly heads, and we have Lapcats to thank for that. Now if only I could convince my partner to let me adopt a few more...

I contacted Lapcats and Barbara was very helpful in educating me on how to isolate the stray and medical/neuter. I decided to foster with Lapcats because they are no kill, I had organizational support, and always wanted to foster- I wouldn't have taken the stay home otherwise. Cat care cost like food and litter was all from my pocket and I was okay. A lot of their adult cats are very shy but my foster was outgoing and playful - he has tendency to bite a bit playfully but never broke my or people's skin. I had different people cat sit him and none had issues with him. After 8 months of fostering, Barbara told me the cat is mine and Lapcats will remove him from adoptable web page. I know at least another foster parent whom Barbara assigned the cat and left the cat with the foster parent because the cat didn't get adopted out for more than a year. While fostering with them, I appreciated seeing cats finding new home but from fostering experience, it is extremely disappointing how she gave up on cats who are not fast or easily adoptable and force it upon the foster parent.

This place operates way more like a puppy-mill resale business than a real rescue. They pushed a…read moredog on us that they claimed was a sweet, easy companion, but what we actually got was a high-drive, reactive dog that needed hours of structure and training every single day. None of that was disclosed. And we have a cat who's lived here peacefully for years, the dog they gave us immediately showed unsafe behaviour toward him biting his neck and ears and not releasing all this as a 9 week old puppy supposedly. When we brought the dog back, the woman there was rude, dismissive, and tried to blame us for not "introducing them right," even though we followed their instructions. The attitude was the exact same as a backyard breeder, take the money, dump the dog on you, refuse to take responsibility, and then guilt-trip you when reality doesn't match what they sold. We lost $500, stressed our home, and risked our cat's safety because they couldn't be honest about what kind of dog they were placing. It felt nothing like rescue work, more like flipping dogs and hiding behind rescue language as apparent when the founder shows up to collect a dog in a brand new 90,000$ Audi. I WOULDN'T RECOMMEND THEM TO ANYONE, JUST ASK THEM FOR PROOF OF WHERE THESE PUPPIES COME FROM.
