I had the intention of adopting a dog today which I saw on the website. It didn't say on the website that he was neutered YESTERDAY. I visited the dog in person without knowing that and loved how sweet he was and we bonded instantly. When I committed to taking him home I wasn't aware he was JUST neutered. I thought maybe it was recent but not yesterday. I had already agreed to taking him home though, and I felt bad that he just had surgery and was in the shelter. Very sweet love bug but I also cannot commit to all of the long list of after care requirements of the surgery when it is that new and I didn't know what I was getting myself into fully. They didn't even give him his medication for the day when I picked him up around 1:30 pm. I forgot the medication there and no one called me to let me know. It's so hard to reach the staff members. The voicemail boxes are full, no one answers and there is no general number to the shelter where you can speak to someone. I didn't get a cone and they only offered medication for like a day. Not only that, the dog had a lot of separation anxiety that was making me anxious. I didn't want to say that because I didn't want to hurt the dog's chances of adoption asap. I was not prepared to deal with that much anxiety post surgery either. I had the dog for maybe 4 hours. He had time away from the shelter, had treats, was cuddled, and I even bought him a cute collar that made him look so handsome. When I dropped the dog off, one officer treated me like I've had the dog his whole life and like I was abandoning him, and made me feel really uncomfortable and guilty. She said, "go up to the counter and tell them exactly the reason you told me for returning him", reprimanding me. At least I brought the dog back before he got extremely attached which was happening quickly and I only had the dog for a few hours??? And the way she tried to shame me in front of the other staff was totally uncalled for and inappropriate for the situation. I help this shelter any time I can and to treat me like a piece of crap that was abandoning a dog was not cool.

But I will say, I'm really glad we were able to get him seen because the experience was honestly amazing. The exam fee was only $30. And let me tell you--here in Sacramento, you don't usually hear $30 when it comes to getting your pet evaluated. You're hearing prices like $176, $186, or even $210 just for an exam. So, $30? That was definitely affordable for us. You do have to pay ahead of time to secure your appointment, so keep that in mind. We got there pretty early, so we waited a few minutes and filled out some paperwork before my pup was seen. They evaluated him, and thankfully, he looked really healthy overall. They ended up charging us around $130 for the additional treatment, which included sedation, cleaning his wound, an injection, X-rays, and checking to see exactly what was going on with his injury. After everything was done, we were able to pick him up, and they went over the charges with us after the visit. I will say, they mentioned that they weren't fully open to the public just yet, but from my experience, it seemed like they were currently accepting appointments. So, if you're planning on taking your pup there, I would definitely recommend calling ahead to make sure they're accepting appointments and to save yourself some time. They also provide vaccinations, adoption services, and behavioral training for dogs, so they offer quite a few different services for the community. Overall, I have to say this has been one of the best customer-service experiences I've had so far here in Sacramento. Everyone was helpful, the process was straightforward, and most importantly, my pup was taken care of. If you're in the Sacramento area and looking for affordable services for your pet, I definitely recommend checking them out!

Unfortunately, our experience with the staff was very different. We spent about 4 hours here because we originally came hoping to adopt a Scottish Fold. Unfortunately, we ended up being just two people away from getting one, which was disappointing, but of course we understand that there are many people looking to adopt. What was more frustrating was the overall experience with the front office staff. When we asked questions, they often seemed annoyed or dismissive, which made an already long and stressful process even more difficult. We never felt particularly welcomed or like our questions were appreciated. We also briefly went over to the dog side and had to leave almost immediately because of the strong smell of urine, feces, and vomit. I understand that animal shelters are difficult environments to keep perfectly clean, but the odor was overwhelming. The volunteers really were the bright spot--they were genuinely kind and compassionate. I just wish the same level of warmth and customer service extended to the staff. Overall, I personally prefer the Elk Grove Animal Shelter, where we've had a much more positive experience.

Everyone was kind and friendly, and you can genuinely tell they love being around the animals and take great care of them. There were rabbits, kittens, cats, and dogs available for adoption. The shelter was clean, organized, and well-maintained. You can also give the dogs treats--the treats are available at the front desk, just ask a staff member. I would definitely recommend the City of Elk Grove Animal Shelter if you're looking to adopt or simply want to visit and meet some wonderful animals. We had applied with multiple rescues across Sacramento, but many were non-respondent or had old legacy listings for dogs that were no longer available. When we saw "Fuggle" pop up on AdoptAPet.com one morning, I knew I had to put in an application for our family, despite feeling hopeless that it would not go anywhere. The application was quite thorough, but was quite similar to those we'd filled out for our Berner. I received an auto-reply stating they would reach back within a week, and lo and behold 7 days later, I received the happiest news and sweetest email, "I am happy to tell you that we have selected you for my favorite puppy! He really is the cutest.  What is your schedule like? I am hoping to do homechecks this week and then have the puppies picked up from the adoption event this weekend.  Just to make it easier for us to get it done :)" We quickly got in touch for a homecheck after work one day, were officially approved and were able to take "Fuggle" home just 13 days after submitting our application. The adoption process was so incredibly smooth and easy, and everyone at Recycled Pets was incredibly nice and professional, from the home visit, to the foster parents, to the adoption day. We've since attended a puppy reunion with his litter, and have joined a wonderful online community that celebrates everyone's extra-special love for their Recycled Pet. I'm so happy that Recycled Pets helped us find "Fuggle" but just as happy that we have such a caring and loving rescue organization here in Sacramento.

They make sure the dogs are HEALTHY before adoption, which I know a lot of rescues are sheisty on, they follow up on the "after care" of the adopted pets, they do home checks and have a detailed application to make sure these pups will be taken well care of!!! She has even transported dogs from So Cal up here via other volunteers, and Chris has driven adopted dogs all the way to Oregon to be with their new families. As an RVT student, and having interned in vet clinics, dealing with the "Racism" of the Pit breed on a daily basis in my own work (I am a pet sitter and walk dogs, and several pit bulls..and the looks people give me you'd think I'd crapped on the sidewalk in public or something?!) Anyway- I HIGHLY recommend going through this rescue if you are looking for an organization and people who honestly just love dogs and are not in it for the money like many other organizations.

There are no words to express how grateful I am to SIAR…read more My boyfriend and I purchased two 4.5 month old puppies from Craigslist (Please learn from my story and don't make the same mistake). Immediately after we brought them home, one of our puppies was getting sick. We took him into the vet and we were told our pup had parvo. If you are not familiar with parvo, it is an extremely contagious and deadly virus that kills most puppies within 72 hours. There is no cure. The puppies had not been vaccinated before we got them and had been exposed at the residence we purchased them from. Our first puppy, Havoc, fought the parvo for 5 days at home. We'd been giving him subcutaneous fluids 3 times a day, a shot to help prevent him from vomiting, and two oral medications. He still drank a little water on his own, but refused to eat anything. I'd been syringing him pedialite and giving him some high calorie/nutrient dog food gel to try and keep him going. The poor guy lost at least 10 pounds in those 5 days. When our second puppy, Chaos, started refusing food and getting sick, we knew we were in trouble. The amount of money we spent on one sick pup in less then a week was way more than anything we could've ever anticipated.. and we couldn't afford to take care of two. We desperately searched around for options. I was horrified to learn that shelters in our area aren't accepting surrenders because they're so full, and many parvo dogs are euthanized right in the parking lot because parvo is so contagious and deadly. I called and emailed every rescue I found online. Throughout the day Havoc crashed hard. His legs gave out and he was dead weight in my arms as I tried to keep some fluids in him with the IV bag. Right when we needed someone the most, a woman who works with SIAR named Mary called me and told me she lost a puppy to parvo and she wanted to help us with our two boys. She were beside ourselves. We rushed to her vet and dropped them off right away. Unfortunately even with hospitalization, Havoc passed. Chaos seems to be responding to treatment, but even to this day (almost a week later) he is still fighting. This whole experience has been heartbreaking. We didn't even have our pups for a week and we did everything we possibly could think of.. but parvo is such a nasty virus with no cure. I am so thankful to the stranger who agreed to take my boys and pay for extremely costly treatments knowing that they still might not be enough to save them. Thank you for stepping in where we couldn't to help give them another chance at life. The volunteers at SIAR are true animals lovers and exceptional human beings. I've learned a little more about their rescue since surrendering my puppies to them and they take on a lot of really sick dogs. They do not have a shelter, so their entire rescue is a network of volunteers who foster in their homes. The love and care that these volunteers give to these guys is amazing. Please adopt from and donate to SIAR, who put so much into making sure dogs get another chance.
