I thoroughly enjoyed my dining experience at One53. We sat in a corner of the restaurant with large windows on either side. Our waiter was very helpful in offering options and letting us know of specials. The time from ordering to our food being served was a little long but the food was excellent. I had the swordfish with fries and a petite salad. The whole meal was awesome. For desert I had an apple tart with vanilla ice cream. It was also very good. There we a lot of other desert options and several sorbet features. One53 is a house setting with a fairly adequate parking lot behind the restaurant. Great atmosphere and there are some seating spots that could be very romantic and secluded for a special occasion. read more

One 53 is hands down my favorite place to go to in the Princeton area. The food and drinks are phenomenal, the atmosphere is relaxed, the interior is modern, you'll always sit down next to interesting people at the bar, the staff is friendly, the owners are awesome and the chefs are really cool (you can buy them a six-pack - check the bottom left of the menu!). I've had so many things here. All of these I love: calamari app, octopus app, pea shoot salad, salmon tartare, scallops entree, salmon entree (if you get this with field greens and French fries, definitely get it BLACKENED! Also, the fries here are are SO good. They're hand-cut and super thin.) soft shell crabs, seared flounder, and the coconut ice cream dessert. They have generously portioned side dishes here that are super tasty, like the sautéed greens, broccoli rabe, and hot peppers. I'm a bit obsessed with their spicy margarita. Sad to say, but this was the worst experience I have ever had at a nice restaurant. Food and service were just okay. See additional comments for the poor handling of food allergies. Avoid this place, there are many other better restaurants in the Princeton area. Dietary restrictions: The kitchen was very inattentive to food allergies. We informed our server about a severe food allergy before placing the order (he did write it down). However, this message was not received by the kitchen and every dish that came out had food with the allergy we asked to be avoided. We had to send back each dish and wait additional time for them to remake. The server was helpful and apologetic about the situation, but the kitchen needs to pay more attention. Have never had such a bad experience with dealing with food allergies than this restaurant. read more

This is a rustic and trendy restaurant located in Rocky Hill. One thing we noticed upon entering was that the tables were too close together. It's like everyone is sitting right on top of each other so there isn't much privacy while dining. When we received our menu the one thing we noticed is that there wasn't much of an appetizer selection. They can use a couple more additions to the menu. We ended up ordering the octopus and the roasted beet salad with watercress, candied pecans, and goat cheese. The octopus was very good, but the roasted beet salad wasn't good at all. First off the salad didn't have any dressing so pretty much it was like you were eating dry watercress. The goat cheese was crumbled, and it would of been better if they gave you a nice piece of it on the top instead of crumbling it over the salad. Either way a salad without dressing isn't good period! For entrees we ordered the lamb chops and the strip steak which came with house cut fries. We also ordered a side of Mac and cheese. The lamb chops was by far the best dish of the night! It was OUTSTANDING! They were high quality double cut lamb chops seasoned and cooked to perfection! They were so good that was I was talking about how good they were for the rest of the night! For steaks they use Pat La Frieda meats which is considered a high quality place to get meats from. I find Pat La Frieda not to have good steaks. I have eaten them on multiple occasions, and I have found them to lack tenderness. Pat La Frieda steaks are much too dry like and thick, and like I said lacks any tenderness. A better option for this restaurant is to get their steak from Allen Brothers. Allen Brothers by far carries much better steaks than Pat La Frieda. The strip steak was seasoned good, but the quality of the steak really wasn't good. The fries were ok. We found them much too thin for our liking. The Mac and cheese side was so good! I'm so glad we ordered it as a side! For desserts we had the warm chocolate chip cookie topped with vanilla ice cream and the coconut cake with cream cheese icing. The warm chocolate chip cookie was so good! It would of been even better if it was made a little bit thicker, and not as thin. The coconut cake came with most delicious cream cheese frosting ever, but the actual cake was too dry. The cake needed to be more moist, and it would have been the best dessert! The neighboring table was telling us that they felt the cake was too dry as well, but loved the frosting! Overall, we enjoyed most of everything we had here. I wouldn't recommend ordering a salad as an appetizer here though for sure! I recommend dining at ONE 53 in Rocky Hill! read more

The bread at the beginning of the meal comes with this delicious white bean paste/garlic/olive oil mixture, which is an interesting change from the usual olive oil or butter. Five stars on food, 3 stars on service and 2 stars on pricing. The dinner was one of the best we've had in a long time. Service was extremely sporadic and the girl who bussed the table was rude. He had the jaegerschnitzel and loved every bite. They were kind enough to swap out sauteed spinach as he dislikes red cabbage. My arctic char could have been cooked a minute longer as it was still a bit soft. The cauliflower rice and veggies were excellent and the food was well plated. But these dishes could have each been about $4 - $6 less for a better value to the customer. We came on a Sunday evening when the restaurant was busy, but not overly so. read more

My husband and I had an unpleasant Valentine's dinner at this restaurant. To begin, I ordered a little sweet Rob Roy with a twist. It came with a cherry. I asked, you can leave the cherry but add a twist. It came back with just a twist. It was not only dry but had an unpleasant sour taste. This is the only cocktail I drink and in 50 years the only one I have ever sent back. It came back better. I had to ask for bread which we didn't get and all the other tables had it. Then our entrees arrived and the waiter whisked away my clean bread dish which i had yet to use. I had to get the waiter and ask for it back. Then it was difficult to cut my chicken so I asked for a steak knife. The waiter brought one and whisked away my other knife but I went after him for it. I told him I needed it to put butter on the bread. I began to feel like I had to protect my food from being carried away. I told him at the end of the dinner that he shouldn't have taken away the plate and knife and he said he was going to give me a clean knife. I said he should have asked me first. I don't know the waiter's name. But he gave us an unpleasant Valentine's dinner. What a waste. I certainly will make sure I never have this waiter again if we ever dare eat there again. Definitely a fan of ONE 53. Service was great, food was great. Since we had an early reservation at 5 p.m., the valet was not set up yet and we self parked. Our server was friendly and engaging throughout the meal. Since it was summer in New Jersey, we had to order everything corn related on the menu and the three corn items did not disappoint. For six of us, we ordered as starters: escargot en croute, fresh burrata with roasted cherry tomatoes, grilled calamari with squid ink aioli, steamed clams with white wine, shishito peppers, jersey corn ravioli, corn & crab chowder, and house salad. For entrees: jumbo lump crab cakes, fried chicken with mac & cheese, grilled salmon with jersey corn succotash & corn puree, bucatini with jumbo lump crab and red pepper flakes, and a 20 oz bone-in dry aged rib-eye steak. Medium rare dry aged rib-eye was grilled to perfection, so was the calamari and salmon. Regret not getting another rib-eye but we were very full mid way through dinner. Burrata was creamy and the balsamic reduction was perfect. The chili oil on the corn chowder was just the perfect touch to elevate the chowder to super deliciousness. Corn ravioli, corn succotash, corn puree - all delicious thanks to summer fresh super sweet jersey corn. Red pepper flakes added a kick to the bucatini which was perfectly al dente. Fried chicken was pretty good, but having just been to Yardbird in Vegas two weeks before, I was biased as I was still enamored with Yardbird's bird. My aunt who insisted on ordering the escargot did not like the flavor (tarragon, I think), but I think it was well seasoned. Steamed clam in white wine was good, we used the bread to soak up the sauce. Since we were tempted to start eating as soon as the food arrived, we did not take pictures of the clams or the shishito peppers. Food: Fantastic burgers and fries!! Their food in general has been well prepared each time. I've never tried a steak, but will occasionally venture away from my usual burger to try a seasonal entree. I've had a great pasta dish and crab cakes -- so I know they can handle versatility! And the warm skillet chocolate chip cookie is one of my favorite desserts of all time. Menu is pricey, but reasonable for the quality of the food and the area. Service: Always good. Waitstaff is attentive without being overbearing. The location is small, so make sure you make a reservation just to be on the safe side! Atmosphere: Here's where one53 loses a star. It's a cute place, upscale yet comfortable vibe -- but the tables are so close together due to the small space. I don't know man... if you're going to make me wait for a table, is it so much to ask to have a proper location in your restaurant where I can actually wait? One 53 answers that query with a resounding "NO." So, first impressions of this place is a vestibule with black curtains that's too small for one couple to stand it, great work. Once we got into the place, we were treated to a decent and fresh menu. I had the pork shank and it was dope. Almost dope enough to make me not realize that I was basically eating in a building that was, at one point someone's living room. This place was obviously a remodeled old house so its small. If you're thinking of going with a large party, maybe don't think that. My unreasonable issues with the decor aside, the food was really great and this is definitely the type of place you'd want to take a date to impress them. The prices are a bit too high, but service was on point and everyone was pleasant. Though, a man like me tends to like his holes in the wall a bit more rough around the edges. read more

Shame on me for thinking NJ didn't have comparable restaurants to NYC. ONE 53 is my saving grace and I now want to explore numerous other restaurants in NJ...my home state, my birth state, my ONLY state...hm, I take that last part back. Located a short ways away from Princeton (another town with great restaurants and an Ivy league school), this little diamond in the rough shines on a fairly stale, residential road. It's easy to miss because it blends in with the houses surrounding it so keep your eyes peeled. We made reservations and were promptly seated upon our arrival. The host was pleasant, the restaurant had a modern, contemporary feel to it and the bar was fully stocked ready to lubricate it's thirsty visitors. After sitting down and getting settled, I almost forgot where I was...NJ or NYC? Down to the important stuff...FOOD! Appetizer: Escargot - The snails were REALLY plump and served over a thin piece of pastry. The flavors were present but not well enough to round out the dish. I wouldn't order this again. I overheard the waiter next to us praising the foie gras and I regret not going with my gut and ordering it. Grr... French Fries with Truffle Mayo - Heavenly. You MUST get this. The truffle oil was oozing from the mayo and with every fry I dipped into the sauce, my mouth sang and my heart smiled. Entree: Oktoberfest Plate - This is a seasonal dish and came with 3 weiners: 1) Frankfurt 2) Broiled Bratwurst 3) Grilled Bratwurst. I enjoyed the Broiled Bratwurst the most but the German lady next to me, who ordered the same plate, said the Frankfurt is actually the more popular weiner. Overall, the plate was everything I expected...no more, no less. Pan Seared Scallops with Lentils and Mustard Vinaigrette - The scallops were cooked perfectly and the presentation looked flawless. Usually, when something looks good, it tastes good and this definitely fell into this category. Unfortunately, I didn't get to taste as much as I would've liked but my friend said it was good. Dessert: Chocolate Bread Pudding with Caramel Bourbon Sauce - WOWZA, that was a mouthful to say and eat. A lot of the reviews kept mentioning this dessert and I have to say it was good. The bread wasn't as moist as I imagined it to be but it wasn't too sweet and paired well with my beer. I visited ONE 53 for the first time last night. It was an overall great experience! Not only was the food great, but the service was excellent. Our server, Carla, was sweet, patient, articulate, and really helpful. She explained all the specials to us and helped us choose our entrees and dessert. The additional staff was really prompt and attentive in picking up empty dishes, refilling silverware, and refilling water. we had the grilled halloumi appetizer which was awesome and I had the crab and lemon bucatini as my entree. It was definitely one of the best pasta dishes I've had in a really long time. For dessert, Carla recommended the grilled pound cake. Although this is something we were initially skeptical about, it was delicious! I'd highly recommend this restaurant, and highly recommend sitting in Carla's section, if possible! read more

I actually wanted to give 3.5 stars because of the rude service of the waitress with the brown hair pulled back in a messy ponytail.. On our receipt, it said her name was Katie. Honestly, One 53, get rid of Miss Thang. She treated us as if she was too good to do her job and it took away from our experience. From the door, she was unwelcoming, hardly ever came to check on us, and was just plain rude when she did interact with us. Other than her, the food was tasty. I was really excited to try the foie gras and while I have nothing to compare it to, I enjoyed it. The BLT skewers were really good as well. My husband and I split the Rossini burger which was very tasty. My husband couldn't stop raving about it. For dessert, we shared the chocolate bread pudding. This place is definitely one of the top restaurants in Princeton. It's hidden in Rocky Hill and can be a bit hard to find the first time. Came here for a wine tasting as well as dinner on a different occasion. I had the clams in white wine sauce and it was delicious. I then had the sauteed shrimp and garlic and that was delicious as well. Service was excellent and it's definitely a more mature crowd. They also had a few tables in the front of the house by big windows looking out into the main street which seem very romantic and appropriate for the occasion. The host says "Okay, we have this table right here (middle of the floor, loudest area of the room) or there's seats in the wine cellar.' We looks at each other and say "WINE CELLAR". Best. Choice Ever. It seems strange at first: to long tables with place settings. We sit down across from each other .. we are between 2 other couples, about half a arms length away from them. After a little while, I got used to it and it had grown on me .. it was quite and relaxing and exactly what I was looking for. Food was awesome. It's not a incredibly extensive menu, but what they do offer is note worthy. Go for the mussels or the cheese platter as a appetizer .. the ravioli's were a great dinner too. The menu also changes seasonly. Wine list was major. Since it was a special night, I was lucky enough to drink vino from the "Caption's List" .. thats a list you don't want to miss ! :) Service was perfect. They were friendly and professional. First time at ONE53. Came here with the purpose of trying their famed foie gras burger aka the Rossini Burger. Just reading the menu description had me desperately hungry. Good thing I came after a rigorous pilates and yoga session. ***Rossini Burger*** (Kobe Beef, Seared Foie Gras, Black Truffle Cheese, Truffle Mayo, Mushrooms in Madeira on Brioche) It was everything as promised and lived up to its expectations. 4 sizable pieces of foie gras piled on top of a juicy wholesome kobe beef patty. The order also came with scrumptious shoe string fries that were perfect with the truffle mayo. I was in fatty heaven. We also ordered the House-Made Cavatelli with Brown Butter Sage Sauce & Sausage and the Grilled Swordfish entree. Both delicious as well. The cavatelli were apparently hand made on a daily basis so could definitely taste the freshness of the ingredients there. I'm usually not a fan of swordfish but this one came tender and grilled to perfection. My only complaint was that my cocktail the Pimm's Cup while tasty and well-balanced was quite lacking in alcohol content. Overall, this place was a gem. Older/family oriented crowd. One 53 is situated on Washington St in the heart of downtown Rocky Hill NJ, a small hamlet near Princeton. The dining area is divided into two areas: the main floor with the vibrant bar scene and the basement with a hard cement floor and walls covered with built-in wine racks. The menu is classic American with an upscale comfort appeal. The basement seating involves 2 long tables capable of seating 12 each and used as communal seating when not reserved for a private event. I started with the mushroom soup which was flavorful and appropriately seasoned. For the entree, I selected the duck confit risotto. It was quite delicious. The risotto was served al Debye and the dock what moist and succulent. My friends enjoyed the seared sea scallops and the braised short rib served on the bone with winter baby root vegetables and Parmesan polenta. Sublime! For dessert, the Flourless chocolate tort delivered a satisfying finish. Service was very good and quite helpful. The price for 3 with 1 glass if wine each was $186 before tip. Got a gift card for one 53 and couldn't wait to take my fiancé there. I'll be honest, not sure I'd ever go back if I had to pay because it's quite pricey. But with that said, it was a very delicious evening. Only complaint is the atmosphere. It's very tight in the restaurant and we got stuck under bright lights (so much for mood lighting). I had the rasoi burger. It was very good. Very very very rich. Could have used some better contesting textures. The confit and Kobe beef and cheese kind of blend together into a soft mush - a tasty rich mush. I've paid $30 for a burger before. Would not pay $30 for this one. Awesome dinner last night! Hubby and I shared the grilled halumi cheese with figs, a tasty combination of savory and sweet that went great with the complimentary sourdough bread. He was happy to see Chimay beer in the menu. I had the mustard crusted salmon with root veggies. It was delicious and a good size portion. My husband had the blackened mahi mahi served with French fries. This was also a very generous portion of fresh fish. Even though we had little room, the desserts choices looked so good. We shared an Apple tart that was a perfect crisp crust with sweet and tart apples served with vanilla ice cream. My favorite thing was that all the food was served warm, which is hard to do.
