I stopped by here this past Thursday evening with some coworkers for dinner. On a Roll is one of the myriad food stands located in the San Pedro Square Market. So what that means is that it is the type of place that you walk up to and order from before finding a seat in the communal area. There isn't too much to say about their food stall other than their menu is hung above them and has some pictures on it. They also only accept credit cards at $10 or over which slightly changed what I would order. For dinner on this evening I was all set on having a chicken bahn mi. However at $8, I wasn't going to be to put it on my corporate card and so switched it to thetritip instead. The guy at the counter told me that it would be 8 minutes and I stepped back to wait. Right around that time it was ready and I grabbed it and headed off to find my coworkers. The sandwich itself ended up being quite good as the tri tip was cooked perfectly and I loved whatever sauce was on it. It's ample vegetables made the sandwich feel healthy as well and the bread tasted good. It was a meal that I really enjoyed and if I had to change anything about it that would have to be a little less bread to the filling ratio. Don't let that deter you as it was still a pretty delicious sandwich. The bottom line for me is that I would head back here again in the future. While I wasn't a fan of the $10 credit card minimum their food was good and won me over. read more

One My mom ordered the shrimp stirfry and I ordered eggrolls. When I got the eggrolls they give you a spicy sauce with it. I asked the guy if there was any other sauce that wasn't so spicy and he said that was the only sauce they had. I tried the eggrolls without the sauce and it was the worst eggroll I've ever tasted. There was no flavor whatsoever other than disgusting. There was two other people nearby who got eggrolls and same as myself took one bite and left the rest. One lady pointed to her egg rolls in sarcasm "Best dinner ever" with a funny face. We also asked for a cup of water and he was so stingy he only gave me about a half a cup filled with the water. San Pedro market square has a lot of options for food so the competition keeps everything yummy. This place is no exception. A sandwich here is priced much higher than most but then this is San Pedro market... They have a great selection of Vietnamese and Asian foods besides bahn mi like rice plates, egg rolls, spring rolls, soups, and noodles. I always seem to order the tri tip bahn mi (sandwich). This is unique to this place,and my favorite meal here. It has tri tip that is cooked and then simmered in a sweet onion based sauce. You get a cup of this yummy sauce with the sandwich for dipping, it really makes the meal. Its served on a fresh French baguette with French mayonnaise (butter mixed with mayo), cucumber, carrots, daikon, jalapenos, and cilantro. It's awesome! I have been coming here for quiet some time. I will typically get there by 11 when they open because they do get quite a line that stays consistent through lunch. Haven't visited on the weekend but the week day rush is just that a rush. Which of course means their food is yum, right? RIGHT! I have tried a couple of items from their menu and none have disappointed all have been really well executed. Flavorful and wonderfully presented. There is a walk up counter that you can eat at that is adorned with a few bar stools if you can't wait to dig in. Service is always pleasant, fast and with a smile. They even offer some yummy complimentary cold tea. I guess the best way to execute this review is to review each item I have tried thus far, so here we go: 1. Pad Thai: Noodles are delicious. Vegetables are crisp and fresh. Everything you want in a pad thai. I ask for extra peanuts and they gladly oblige my request. Oh and 1 order is plenty and can be shared. Moderately priced at $10.75. 2. Crispy Chicken over rice. Its a lightly breaded chicken alongside some rice and a salad. Oh and let's not forget the sweet yummy sauce it comes with that makes you wanna just bathe in it while you savor the flavors..lol! This portion too is plentiful and comes in at $10.75. 3. Now for my favorite. I definitely saved the BEST for last. They have a Tri-tip Banh Mi..ooohhmmyyggoossh. It's as if the heavens open up and the angels sing as you bite into this out of this world sandwich. The meat is tender and juicy. The bread is crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. The vegetables are fresh and crisp and the tri-tip sauce it comes with is like the cousin of the french dip like sauce. In eating this sandwich the sauce gets all over the place, and you end up licking your fingers and your lips and wondering where it's been all your life. It's a big sandwich and packed with a hearty serving of meat and comes at a price tag of $9.75. But unlike your last Plenty-O-Fish blind date you won't regret this choice. Among the selections of food stalls (which ranged from mexican, american and Mediterranean), On a Roll got what I wanted and they serve it huge which is a plus for me! I only ordered some snacks from here, but I would definitely be back for a more substantial meal. I came in on a Friday night and I ordered a thai tea with boba and an order of coconut shrimp. Now, I freaking love coconut shrimp. It is one of my favorite snacks ever, but it's really hard for me to find good coconut shrimp except in Hawaii. Their thai tea was extremely delicious, although the boba had a slightly weird bumpy texture and it was a little too chewy. But it was okay since the drink itself was somewhat large for $5. The shrimps were $6 for 6 small pieces so I was a little disappointed since the portion weren't that big. The breading wasn't as light and fluffy I wanted-- the breading was a little too heavy. I don't quite remember what the sauce was, I think it was a sweet and sour sauce which I wasn't impressed by. I think they should have used a mango chutney type of sauce instead. However, their sandwiches and noodles looked delicious, so whenever I'm back in San Jose, I'll drop by and try something new. On a Sharks hockey game night, this whole place San Pedro Square, is a happening place. Jammed with teal dressed peeps having a good time. This place is a great alternative to Dac Phuc, (though really, anything is a good alternative to Dac Phuc), although you are paying a *lot* more than you would at "real" Vietnamese places on Tully. I got the grilled pork noodle plate (bun thit nuong), and after begrudgingly handing over $10.50, was pleasantly surprised to see that it came with prawns and an eggroll (though it wasn't sliced) as well. Despite my cheap-ass moaning about the price, I can't deny that the pork, shrimp, and egg roll were all very well-made, which is the main reason that it's getting 4 stars instead of 3. Additionally, I don't know what kind of crack they added into their fish sauce + chili garlic sauce blend, but it was the most delicious fish sauce I've had in a long time. Anyway, I'll probably be back to try an egregiously high-priced banh mi ($5.95), but knowing that I can get almost the same for a couple bucks less every time will probably keep me from coming back. read more

My ma caught a cold, so the closest place to get soup was here....and here's my take: I don't usually do corporate but when I do it's when I receive gift cards, free pizookie coupons, and happy hour. We didn't have any problems at the garage 2 streets over 2 dollars for 2 hours? I'm down with that. Seating | Plenty of seating outside and inside however it does get pretty packed. The tall seats are on a first come first serve basis though. Feels | In the heart of Huntington Beach Main Street. Coming here during Surf City nights is an additional plus. Feel free to watch a game or even people watch. It's a nice place for almost any type of night. Food: Wonton Egg Noodle Soup (Recommend) * A medley of protein from sea to land, it's a very good fulfilling mix. For those cold weathers and in need of something warm. Grilled Chicken Noodle Plate (A-OK) * Another good fulfilling plate. I just added more sriracha to spice things up. Beef Tri-tip (A-OK) * Pretty good. I've been to this spot countless times, whether it's before a Sharks game or during a work lunch. I mainly go here when I'm not that hungry. I get the spring roll which is served in bite-sized pieces with peanut sauce and fried won ton chips. I like dishes that make you think of eating healthy, and with all the greens presented in this light snack, I'm sure I'm following through. Whenever I get this dish, I leave content ...not overly full and also easy on the wallet. There were a few times when I did reach deeper into my wallet here, when I was hungrier than usual. I've had their won ton soup and pad thai, both being pretty decent. I was more impressed with the size of each dish. Unlike other stands, they do not have a pager system for when your order is ready. The Vietnamese coffee was great, but when my adult daughter ordered food for her Dad (my hubs) from this place, I had to pick it up. The worker (older Asian lady) who gave me my hubs food, she was very unfriendly, questioned if the order was mine, even though I told her the young lady who placed the order is my daughter, and even pointed her out to her. I even showed her my credit card which was used to pay for the food! She gave me such attitude! We came here for lunch today. Lots of choices inside San Pedro Market. The Yelp reviews were decent and compared to the other food stalls, ON-A-ROLL seemed to have more of a line than the rest. Another plus were the oversized pictures of food which were hanging on the wall functioning as a menu. I love to order from picture menus. So we ordered a few things to share: EGG ROLLS (2/5) I liked the fry on these, crispy and rolled nicely but the filling was lacking. It was mealy tasting, didn't taste the meat or vegetables, tasted like ground tofu or something. I love egg rolls but I didn't like these. CHICKEN CURRY (4/5) This was pretty good, some mixed vegetables in with the chicken and curry sauce. BANH MI (VIETNAMESE SANDWICH) (4/5) We had the grilled pork and I enjoyed the sandwich, especially the meat, seemed like it was sauced and it was salty and delicious. I felt like the veggies on the sandwich weren't totally fresh - maybe it was just the cilantro?? *Something* wasn't fresh and I was getting a slightly funky taste, and it almost brought the sandwich down. By the way, just before I ordered, I was scrolling through Yelp reviews and I saw a review where someone complained about being served raw shrimp in one the dishes they ordered. "Yikes, I hope that doesn't happen to me", I thought to myself as I ordered. SHAKING BEEF (3/5) After reading that negative review, I became a little nervous when I noticed the beef in this dish was super rare. Generally speaking, the beef served in Shaking Beef is usually served pretty rare. In fact, I'm pretty sure that's where the name comes from, it's so rare, that it's "shaking". I could be wrong, but I *think* that's true. Anyway - the beef on our plate was so rare it was almost inedible. It kinda grossed me out, but I picked out the more done pieces. I liked the dish, but if I ordered this again, I would ask for medium-rare as opposed to rare. And, once again, I was getting a funky, not-fresh taste from the vegetables in the dish. I can see the potential of this hole-in-the-wall eatery being a four star place. But today, it was just a three for me. Every business deserves a second chance - people screw up, and stuff happens. Of ALLLLLL the places in SPSM, for my first dining experience, I chose On A Roll. My boyfriend and I shared the spring rolls and the chicken Pad Thai. The lady (probably the owner) took our order and was very helpful and polite. Our food came out rather quickly and was soooooooo delicious. The helping of Pad Thai was so big, the 2 of us couldn't even finish it. We got to take it home and shared it again for lunch the next day. I would DEFINITELY recommend the chicken Pad Thai from this place... it comes with lots of chicken and also tofu. (love the combination) I really enjoyed sitting at the counter at On A Roll to eat our meal. I feel like our plate was a huge advertisement too... people walking by were drooling, haha, just like we were when we walked up and saw a lady eating the same dish.
