I had a great experience with Olufson Designs. I wandered in one day with questions about having my ring sized differently. They took detailed photos of the ring before, which were included on the estimate and receipt, and gave a clear estimate of what to expect. This is after we dropped it off at a different shop in Albany to have two bands soldered together, where photos were not taken of the ring at drop off and he felt overall uneasy about that experience. About a year ago, I brought a ring in to Olufson to inquire about having it appraised. The sales associate was nice, told me they don't do appraisals, and that they generally don't recommend an appraisal them unless you are planning on selling the ring (strange advice if you ask me. I wanted to have it appraised for insurance). I don't think she knew that I brought the ring in a year or two earlier to have the gem identified (it was an inherited ring and we didn't know what the gem was). And I was told at the time that it was a high quality gem with high quality diamonds on it. She offered to buy it on the spot for $388. I politely declined knowing that the ring was likely worth a lot more. I finally had it appraised and the replacement value is off the charts. I know that replacement/insurance value is not equal to a purchase/selling price AT ALL, but the gold alone is worth 10x what they offered me. So shady. I would never go back to Olufson after this. Moral of the story: Always ALWAYS get a second opinion. Never sell jewelry on the spot. And maybe avoid Olufson. read more

Do I have my engagement ring? yes. Is it beautiful? Yes. Was it an easy enjoyable process? No. Did I feel like the sales people listened to what I wanted? No. My fiancé and I designed the ring ourselves and had a very specific vision in mind. Throughout the process the lady we worked with told us several times that what we wanted wasn't "in line with their style" and seemed somewhat interested in designing the ring we wanted. In the end I got the ring 85% perfect then gave up trying to work with the jeweler. Even after we took the ring back to get him to do some work he had agreed to, it's still not perfect. We also set a "goal budget" and a "we'd pay this for the perfect ring budget" which the sales lady was supposed to let us know if we were approaching. The final bill came and it was $200 over our highest budget and she never let us know which is disappointing. read more

I went here to have my wedding rings cleaned (which is complimentary), but when she brought them back to me she told me that the goldsmith said that I needed 22 prongs on my wedding ring, and 12 prongs on my engagement ring "retipped." She said that jeweler suggested that I would be likely to lose stones in a just a couple of months. Of course I was alarmed and asked how much it would cost...$800!!!! I told them I would like to get a second opinion. I went to another store and they told me I need 18 and 6 prongs (respectively) done--How much? $188. I told them how much the other store wanted and their jaws dropped open. I will review the other store separately. Another time I came here with a ring that had belonged to my mother-in-law that I was interested in turning into a necklace. I don't remember exactly what the estimate was, but it was way higher than I expected, so I didn't have the work done, but it didn't even occur to me that it might be a lot less somewhere else. It could be that all of their prices are a lot more, but in this case, I really felt like they were being very opportunistic--cleaning my ring for free, and then finding a lot of problems that they could fix--for a price. p.s. It was also going to take 2 weeks to do the work at Olufson's and only 1 week at the other store. read more

This place is down right the best! I have my engagment ring from Kays with the life time care plan. I took it in after 2 months of recieveing it because I could hear my stone moving. They claimed to fix it. Another 2 months and it happened again. I kept waiting and it kept getting worse. My parents finally told me to find a real jeweler and get it fixed. So I googled places to take my ring and this was place popped up. I took it in and the lady told me that they could fix it but to have Kay do it since I had the plan (clearly didnt want to take my money if not needed) I told her my story and she totally understood my fustration. She looked at it and told me everything that needed to be fixed, apparently all three of my main stones were loose!!! They said it would take about a week to fix, no worries there. They called me three days later and told me it was ready. I picked it up same day and it looked bran new! It has been a little over a month now of being fixed and its still amazing! I am never going to Kay ever again! The people at Olufson were so nice and clearly were not after my money they just wanted to help. I will recommend them to everyone I know! They even told me to come in right before my wedding and they will clean my engagment ring and wedding ban for me no questions asked! read more
