Leslie was wonderful! I genuinely appreciated her opinions and ability to work around altering my wedding dress with my unexpected pregnancy. I've never had any type clothing altered before but I do feel she did a great job and there was a high quality to her work. I did remove one star for a couple reasons. First, 3/4 of my appointments started 30-60 minutes late due to her other appointments running late. I do understand that can happen, so that wasn't a huge issue. Secondly, I was rather surprised by the price. The lace on my dress took longer to reapply from the hem than was originally intended, the price was close to $400 which I was expecting around $300. However, I would return to Leslie again if I ever need an alteration done in the future. She's extremely sweet and very knowledgeable, the only issues I had were not entirely her fault in my opinion. read more

I currently live in Cincinnati, Ohio but I am from Corvallis and will be getting married there this summer. After purchasing my dress at a local shop in Ohio, a tailor/alterations person was recommended to me by the dress shop. I called one day to inquire about timelines/prices/services and the woman answered very curtly and abruptly demanded that I should 'just bring the dress to her' and also, could I call back in two hours because she was out. Now, I understand the curiosity of answering the phone because you don't know the number, but if one owns a business and gives out a cell phone number to potential customers, maybe don't answer it if one is not available? A message machine would have been fine, and likely less off putting. In the end I was left with a bad feeling and never called back. I contacted another reference down the street from me that was friendly enough sounding, but I wasn't totally convinced by our conversation that she felt interested or up for dealing with me and my lace dress. Enter Leslie. After a Goldilocks like situation (too much gruff, and not enough interest) a phone call with her was a breath of fresh air. From 3,000 miles away things like this matter. In addition to the friendly conversation, I had 5 friends immediately endorse her via a Facebook request of "who does alterations in the Corvallis area?". These weren't just, 'yeah, she's good' comments, but more along the line of "I love her", "Say hi to Leslie for me", "She's the best"- type of endorsements. Impressive! After this, without hesitation, my dress and I made the journey about 6 weeks prior to my wedding to see Leslie and in the week I was in town, I had two fittings done. The first to assess (and grow to understand her popularity) and the second to see how things were coming along. We debated over bustle styles and I felt totally comfortable asking for, and truly trusting, her opinion. I felt confident with the services and thrilled to be working with such a grounded, real, honest, kind person. She was my 'just right' from previous experiences. I am back home now, my dress in capable hands as I head back just a week before my wedding when I will go back in for two additional visits to fix anything that is needed. I feel very grateful that she is able to make my out of town schedule work and I can't wait to see the dress. I have the utmost confidence that she will do a fantastic job making my dress as beautiful as it can be, helping me to feel confident in a rather formal, out of my element, garment. Specialty Sewing is located in the core of the downtown business area making it very convenient; it is upstairs from Five Star Sports for a more specific reference. The space is full of gowns, pants, shirts, skirts, etc.; it's clear many in town trust her with a proper fit. There are pictures on the wall of other brides (many who I, in fact, knew) and a book full of thank you notes sharing how pleasant it was to work with Leslie. Endorsements all over the place if you ask me. The service seems spot on, which matters a lot, but the soul of this business is Leslie. I'm thrilled to have met her and to be working with her for my wedding. I have no concerns about my dress, which is a huge improvement from 2 weeks ago. Leslie is a one-woman business and so she is the one who takes your call, makes your appointment, marks the clothes for the alterations, sews the alterations, does a second fitting, and steams out the creases. She is very mindful of your deadline and makes sure there is enough time to make more corrections if you aren't happy. Oh, Leslie. I just can't say enough good things about her. While I know she is great at altering wedding dresses (because that is why I came to her), she has also hemmed my fiance's suit pants and they fit him perfectly now. No, she's not the fastest. Yeah, she can be hard to get a hold of because the answering machine usually picks up the messages. But as I've seen, it's because she is giving the customers that come in to her shop the proper attention they deserve. She has always responded to my calls promptly. If that isn't the case for you then here's a tip: leave nice messages! She's not a corporate cog. She's a sweet lady who appreciates when people treat her like a person and she reciprocates with (extra) excellent customer service. Bad attitudes get bad results (my policy, not hers). I always leave her shop feeling lifted up and happier than when I got there. Leslie brings character and quality service to our town. If you want something fast, impersonal, and haphazard, go to one of the corporate shops. But if you want someone to turn your wedding dress from drab to fab while also getting those warm fuzzy feels like you just visited your favorite aunt's house, go to Leslie. read more

Unfortunately I had the same bad experience as another reviewer. It took about 2 weeks to make the appointment because every time I called I got Leslie's answering machine. She was not quick to return calls. I arrived for my appointment but had to wait for about 10 minutes while Leslie chatted with another customer. When she started hemming my jeans, she said that she had to hurry since she had to meet someone in town. I returned a week later to pick up my jeans. When I wore them I noticed that one pair was dragging on the ground and the other pair had one leg shorter than the other. I returned to Leslie's shop and was surprised that she wasn't apologetic. Instead she said that perhaps her floors are uneven and that in textbooks it talks about how long pants are in style. She fixed the jeans at no extra charge, but made me feel like I was causing problems for her. While Leslie is a very nice person, I didn't experience good customer service. She seems to prefer working on bridal alterations. In the future, I will try another place in town. read more

In 2009, I became a vegetarian and subsequently lost quite a bit of weight. As summer 2010 approached, I realized all my summer clothes, many never worn items I'd bought during end of Summer clearance sales in 2009, were going to be way too big. I started searching for a tailor because I really couldn't imagine getting rid of all those brand new clothes that couldn't be returned as well as several other barely worn pieces. I cleaned out my closet and pared down to just the items I loved. I called Specialty Sewing with Leslie and explained my situation including my dilemma about some pieces. She was very upfront with me about the reality that some pieces may not alter well depending on how much alteration was needed. I warned her I had many items to try on and asked her what the consultation would cost. She said it was part of the overall fee I'd pay for each item she altered and there would be no charge for items we determined wouldn't alter well. When I arrived at her shop located in an older building in downtown Corvallis, I still felt hesitant. A prior experience with a tailor hadn't gone well, and I told her as much as we got started. She understood and reassured me we would only tailor what showed promise and that she would give me an idea of the cost for anything that fell outside her typical charges. She took her time,discussing each piece with me, and helping me see what would be involved in altering the more complicated pieces. By the time I left, I felt confident in her ability to finish the pieces. Several people had stopped in while we tried things on and all spoke highly of her work. I went back to pick up my things on the appointed date. We'd determined that with the number of things I'd brought in, we needed to prioritize them and I'd pick them up over several visits. A few things took a bit longer than I expected, but they were all ready by the time I needed them to wear. We did have to make a few adjustments, but that's also to be expected in an alteration scenario. Since that initial group of clothing I took in, I've returned to Leslie each time I've needed something altered. I've never been disappointed with the final product because she's always been willing to make adjustments when something hasn't turned out quite the way I expected. Also, she's always been upfront with me when she just doesn't think there's a way to make a piece work. I've recommended her to my husband and friends over the years since I first took my clothes to her. I will continue to take my alterations to Leslie when the need arises. read more

I had a jacket tailored that she told me initially would be $70 tops. I came in for my second fitting to find that she had not even started and had scheduled me as someone else. Leslie saved my wedding dress! I moved to Corvallis just a couple of months before my wedding, which was in California. I had my wedding dress in tow, still not altered. When I bought the dress it was too big in the bodice, much too long in the hem, and in general just didn't fit "right". After finding that there are not many bridal alterations specialists in this area, and seeing Leslie's positive reviews, I gave her a call. I'm not sure why other reviewers said they had a hard time reaching Leslie - every time I called, she picked up almost immediately. The one time I left a message she called back quickly. From the moment she answered the phone I got the sense of what a warm, friendly person Leslie is, and when I met her at her cute studio downtown I got such a good feeling about entrusting my dress with her. Not only is Leslie sweet, kind, and patient, she is also an excellent listener (hugely important for bridal alterations!). I told her what I didn't like about my dress and she seemed to understand intuitively what the issues were, even though I don't know enough about alterations to express my thoughts fully. Over the course of 4 fittings Leslie transformed my dress from something I theoretically liked the look of, into something that fit ME perfectly and I felt beautiful in! Here's some of the work she did on my dress: -hemmed all the way around the bottom without damaging my train -took in the bodice so it fit my shorter torso -rebuilt the internal corset to fit me better -removed and reapplied the lace along the top of the bodice in a much more appealing pattern than the designer had done! -FIXED a really annoying wrinkle that had always shown up across my abdomen Leslie was committed to making my dress exactly how I wanted it, and is a very skilled and talented seamstress. It's stressful to trust something as important as your wedding dress with anybody, but believe me, you won't regret it with Leslie! read more

I have had so many pieces of clothing altered by Leslie for me that I have lost track. She has altered dresses, slacks, jeans, blouses... You name it, she has probably done it for me! Leslie is very personable and is willing to make or tailor your garment just how you want it. If there has ever been a problem, or something I didn't like, Leslie fixed it, no problem. Her prices are very reasonable, and her quality of work is top notch. Turn around time for pants or quick fixes is a week in the slow season, and two in the busy season. That is excellent turn around for a lady who is always busy. And if you really do need it in a jiffy, she is willing to work with you on that too! read more

My daughter had taken her wedding dress to Leslie and had an awful experience. While Leslie is nice, she is very disorganized and dishonest. She told us it would be max of 65$ to add sleeves on the dress but ended up charging 70$, which doesn't sound unreasonable, however she lost the sash to the dress, and didn't even buy a new one or seem that apologetic. Every time my daughter had an appointment there were at least five other people that would walk in to pay or try on their clothes, she never had a private appointment. At my daughters last appointment, Leslie doubled booked it with another girl and was 15 minutes late while dealing with a different customer. One of the sleeves was longer than the other and the shorter one was all patched together with seams showing. Overall, Leslie may be nice, but I would not recommend going to her. read more
