Glad we found this business on Yelp. We stopped on our road trip passing through on I10 and glad we made the detour. Took about 10 mins off the highway. We had the shrimp poboy and fries- which we split between two people and were plenty full. They have Cajun seasoning, hot sauce and plenty of napkins on the tables. You can eat indoor or outdoor. Plenty of drink selections!! The place is clean and you can even watch the fryers through a window. We had a poboy in New Orleans a few weeks before and it was no comparison to the one we had at Old Tyme--filled with large shrimp and plenty of them. We would detour here again. Stopped in town for a volleyball tournament and toured the school campus. It was a half mile walk from the campus and we enjoyed the stroll through the tree lines streets to get there. It's an older establishment with a great outdoor space. They specialize in sandwich poboys. You order at the counter of an older smaller grocery and they bring your food to you whether you are sitting in their great outdoor space or in the restaurant seating. The boys on the volleyball team enjoyed the outdoor space and the life size chess board. Fun little establishment to visit on the weekend if you are in the area. I apologize in advance for not taking a photo. Last night was the absolute worst. My wife ordered the shrimp po-boy as usual, and I don't know if they ran out of shrimp or what but what she got was over cooked dried out tiny little excuses for shrimp. I decided to try the meatball po-boy, what a horrible mistake. The bread was inedible, it appeared that the po-boy had been made earlier and sat for quite awhile then reheated. Whatever sauce they use, not a tomato sauce that's for sure was just slopped all over. I feel Lafayette is such a nice place with lovely folks. This was our first food stop during our visit. The ladies instantly were polite and really helpful while deciding what to order. We went ahead with the Old Tyme Special and the Shrimp. Personally I would love the Shrimp again. Great crispiness to them. Nothing was over powering. Great with the hot sauce on top. Went to Old Tyme Grocery on the first Friday of Lent for a Crawfish Po Boy. They only serve them on Fridays during Lent so we'd been warned about long lines and wait times but we got there around 11:30 and while there were 3 cars waiting to pick up call-in orders, the line wasn't bad at all. We split a whole Po Boy and it was good but the breaded Crawfish were small, reminding us of Clam Strips, so you tasted mostly breading and a little too greasy. I would definitely recommend for trying other Po Boys and other dishes. They are known as THE PLACE to get Po Boys in Lafayette. read more

With only a few days in town, an Old Tyme Poboy was on our list! Only took a picture of mine because I was too excited to eat the shrimp poboy. Soooooo many shrimp amd fried perfectly and not a super heavy batter. Bread is so soft and is the perfect vessel for this babies. Another in our party got the Meatball sub- holy shit- it was HUGE but he didn't come up for air and said it was the bomb. Another got the roast beef and there was so much neat on it, he needed to take a break before finishing. It's a smallish place with seating now but it was an old grocery store. Ordered roast beef with no lettuce or tomato. Took a while and it had lettuce and tomato. I asked to remake. Employee brought "another" sandwich. It appears they just scrapped the lettuce and tomatoes off, I could have done that. The bread was so smashed it was thin as a sheet of paper. I told her thanks for bringing and had no reply but an aggravated look. The meat was good, threw the bread in the trash. Even had to change tables while inside due to bad smell from garbage can. We got 3 full sized Po boys to share amongst 4 people and it was plenty. We got the shrimp, oyster and olde tyme special. I enjoyed the shrimp one the best by far. It was packed to the brim with friend shrimp. My second was the special as that one literally was overflowing with meat. We got them all fully dressed, best way. The sauces totally made the sandwich. Yes, BUT Olde Tyme WAS the best for a long time. WAS. . . . . . . It was because they continued to use the larger, traditionally fried, shrimp for their po-boys. While all competitors went to the cheaper pre-frozen smaller shrimp. This went on for so long that our young folks lost reference and now accept the inferior as the "standard". Now, Old Tyme has joined the inferior crowd. So, theirs may still be "good"; but they certainly are not as good as they once were ! We are no longer given a choice. If I want a REAL shrimp po-boy, I must visit Delcambre, get a French bread in Jeanerette ''on my way home", peel shrimp, & fire-up my fryer. I'd gladly drive across town and pay $2 or $3 more for the "real thing"; sadly, the "real thing" is no longer available. But, I won't go for something I can get right here near my home. It's a walk up order service that focuses almost entirely on Poboys. They offer some other items, but you can round out your meal with any selection of convenience store like snacks and drinks that are available for purchase. Poboy itself had bread that actually tasted like French bread and fresh cut vegetables to go with your choice of fried seafood or deli meats. I had the whole shrimp which was both a ton of food and of super high quality. The shrimp crispyness, salt levels, evened out with the lettuce and mayo (not a big ketchup or tomato guy) and a perfectly chewy roll. No notes! Fried seafood on just any bread is a fried seafood sando. The same on a light and airy, yet toasted crunchy, Louisiana (note not French) baguette is how you get a poorboy. The seafood platter...man, i just drooled on my phone a little. It was clear the catfish, shrimp, and oysters were all childhood friends who got along great together. All of them lightly breaded, fried crispy, while still maintaining a moist and tender interior. That was especially true with the oysters. The place is cute and nostalgic and waitstaff is fairly friendly. We took a big detour to get a shrimp poboy and it was ok. The bread was not a true French bread. The shrimp were plentiful and hot. But, the poboy had zero flavor or soul. I expected a soulful shrimp poboy with character and spices. I expected a fabulous sauce, spice, a bit of something! This review is going to be different. It's understood that this place has great Po'Boys, but for the person who wants to visit, here's some advice. Look up the menu from pictures and order ahead, it will save you a lot of time because, yes, it's that busy. This way you can walk in and tell them you called in, you pay, then you find a seat or go on your way. If you show up without calling ahead, the line to order is on the left side of the market. Walk in, get in line, order (tell them if its to go or dine in), walk over to the cashier to pay, and then go find a table. If it's to go, wait outside for a few minutes, it can get crowded. As for the food, it's great. Soft fluffy French bread encompassing Delicious fired cajun food. Catfish, shrimp, crawdads, they're all great. I personally ordered the crawdads and it was delicious with extra cajun seasoning and Tabasco. 10 out of 10 for a great sandwich, I mean po'boy. This was the best little find! We needed a quick bite before heading to a wedding because well, you aren't really sure how good wedding food is gonna be no matter how good the blissful couple's intentions are!! Id done my research so i knew a whole would be plenty for he and I. We arrive and its the cutest little spot. It was mid Monday afternoon and parking was easy but definitely limited around the shop itself but plenty of street parking in surrounding area and its near a college/university as well. Walking the shop they have EVERYTHING you could want with your sandwich from bottled can drinks both non and alcoholic and snacks GALORE! One thing I had been doing is collecting little LA specific goodies as we visited different gas stations or stores in our time in Lafayette. They had fried hand pies and ginger cakes. Those were dessert for what was one of THE best po boys Ive ever had! The shrimp were plentiful, plump, perfectly cooked and seasoned to perfection. The bread was soft and the toppings fresh! Maybe a lil creole mustard would have taken it up a notch but it was solid and a LOT of sandwich for the price! We added a bag of Doritos cook ranch and some drinks and life was swell! Definitely if you want to try a po boy this is a solid spot. They have a fried catfish po boy they only offer on Fridays we would have loved that one, especially if the batter is the same as what it was for the fish.
