On the recommendation of a local friend that lives here my family opted to give Chris's a try for a quick bite. Service was promote and attentive. Place was small but clean and welcoming. Shrimp PoBoys were the call of the day and some gumbo. (Chicken n Sausage). Both were Very Good. Not sure what I was expecting with the Gumbo. But what I got was Outstanding. Well we went to lunch last Saturday. 5 of us...we qualified to sit at a large table....(there's a threatening letter on the table that if you don't have 5 or more you will be asked to move,,,,NO EXCEPTIONS! I thought that was unwelcoming. Anyway 4 ordered roast beef poor boy with pepper jack cheese one ordered a shrimp poor boy.....all with FF's.....it took forever for our order to arrive.....I saw them take a few baskets out of the heated window and put on a tray.....I kept watching......they are getting colder by the minute......several minutes went by, they put the other baskets on the tray and bring it to the table. 2 roast beef are hot 2 are barely hot and all FF's were not hot......if we weren't so hungry I would have sent them back.....I'm sure that's not what the wait staff is supposed to do, and the owner probably doesn't know they are doing that.....but your kid waitstaff can ruin your business,,,it's not about loading the tray and waiting on the rest of the order, it's about delivering the best and freshest food to the customer you can.....owners need to instill that in their employees. We were in Lafayette moving our daughter into her apartment and craved a good Poboys. Ordered a ham and Swiss and a shrimp for pickup. I am used to New Orleans poboys and when I picked up the bag I was surprised by how light it was. I got back to the apartment and we opened our sandwiches. My shrimp had 7 friend shrimp and my husband's sandwich was also very sparse on ingredients. We were starving, so we just ate it. I did taste a shrimp by itself and it was delicious. This has always been our first stop whenever we fly in from the Pacific NW, but I must admit we were very disappointed during both of our visits on this trip. They seemed to have changed the type of bread on their Poboy sandwiches which greatly affected the pleasure of eating them. The quality of their meat was still very good, but their gumbo was thinner and not as well seasoned. We have never had to add salt before. The ambiance was pleasant. The tables and carpet were clean, and there were plenty of staff hanging around waiting for something to do. The cashier could have been much friendlier and accommodating. Although I ordered a whole Poboy, when I asked if they could wrap each half separately she quickly refused, and only offered to cut the sandwich in half. This has never been a problem before. Recently, I shopped at Chris' for sandwiches. I'd hoped it was as good as their advertisement, which stated, "a taste as natural as New Orleans." Sadly, the advertisement proved to be false. I called in an order for an oyster poboy and muffuletta, because I thought it would be a nice treat for my mother and sister. While picking up the sandwiches, the bag seemed to have no weight to it, but I still decided to take the order. When I arrived home, I realized why the bag was light and, oddly, warm. The oyster poboy was not an oyster poboy at all. The sandwich consisted of maybe 8 - 10 small oysters on a brat bun with mayo and a few pieces of shredded white cabbage. The oysters were fried to perfection, but the batter and oysters were completely unseasoned; there was not even a hint of salt. I understand, at times, some seafood is out-of-season, but for a company to claim they have "a taste as natural as New Orleans," and they don't serve it up as such, is insulting to their customers and anyone coming into town to experience a small wonder in a medium-sized town. Being from New Orleans, I can educate you guys on what a New Orleans oyster poboy should consist of. A New Orleans oyster poboy comes on French bread--you can get it from the Langlinais' bakery here in Lafayette--with Blue Plate mayo, finely shredded iceberg lettuce, sliced beefsteak tomatoes, and dill pickle chips. To have the lettuce, tomatoes, and pickles on the sandwich is referred to as being "fully dressed." Some people ask for ketchup and hot sauce to be added, but it's not necessary. It's a preference. The oysters and batter can be seasoned with Tony Chachere's Creole seasoning, or you can make your own house blend. Typically, only 8 - 10 small oysters should be on a quarter of a 15 inch loaf of French bread. Let's speak on the muffuletta next. The one from here was heated up. Authentic New Orleans one's are never heated up. Heating up a muffuletta is a northern thing that seemed to start with McAlister's deli, a chain restaurant. Because alumni from my high school run one of the top places to get a muffuletta in the French Quarter, and their family originated the recipe, it would be an true insult to see what Chris' did to their sandwich. I'm not going to be dishonest, but the food was eaten, though it needed a lot of doctoring up, but when you're hungry and weak, who would turn down a plate of food. Hopefully, Chris' takes that slogan about New Orleans down. It most certainly is not. They look like they have a loyal customer base, but maybe the people like the way the food is made there, but they really need to take the New Orleans out of their restaurant slogan. These guys came highly recommended, so we stopped in for a sammy. First off, if you want that stale-ass French bread you're used to in NOLA, you won't like this soft and delicious sammich-glove. Soft, but it held up to the gravy with no problem. They don't have a surf and turf on the menu, but you can order some debris with your shrimp poboy. You can also NOT order it with your shrimp poboy, and the shrimp and huge and perfectly fried, but with some roast beef debris and a bit of Poirer's hot sauce, it's magical. I can't say how the rest of the food was, the family wouldn't let me try theirs, but I did get a scratch trying to grab a fry, so I am gonna guess it was good. I went to Chris's Poboy on Pinhook in Lafayette. When I grabbed my bag at take the takeout window I noticed how light this foot long was. I got home and was thinking where's the meat, where's the lettuce? There's a few ltiny micro shreds of what I think is lettuce but not sure. The meat was spread paper thin except the ends where just a little bit more meat was added. I cannot eat a whole sandwich from your local chain foot long sandwich location and this little thing could be finished easily. When I saw the way it looked when I unwrapped it I literally felt cheated. Again, another Lafayette restaurant with all these great reviews. I am from New Orlean 2 hours away. There's no excuse except greed. Buyer Beware! Every time I come back to Laffy, this is always my first stop. Chris' never disappoints. My go to poboy is Chris' special. I'm not even a fan of ham, roast beef, or even Swiss, but give me this sammie any day of the week. The secret is it being simmered in gravy. Then it's topped off with mayo and shredded cabbage. Insert emoji face of a person drooling. The poboy is fire and I truly believe they serve some of if not the best Poboys in all of Louisiana. Boom! That's right - I went there. You also have to try their gumbo. I know what you're thinking. The best gumbo is served in your kitchen, but this gumbo is like no other. I never and I repeat, never order gumbo from a restaurant, but this is different. Trust me. I can only speak on these two items because I've tried nothing else.
