Went there for the first time today. The bread selection is great and I am sure it will be delicious.So why a one star review?One of the women behind the counter was extremely rude and shouldn't have any contact with customers.We went in to pick up an order that we had made and paid for yesterday.This woman asked our name and we told her.She apparently didn't hear it so she asked again and my wife pulled her mask out(not off) and repeated our name.This woman,in a very loud and nasty tone yelled at my wife "put your mask on".My wife told her that she was trying to comply with the name request and was told to "get out of the store".Meanwhile,the two women behind the counter who were MAKING the bread and pies had their noses uncovered and when I brought that to her attention she told me to "get out of the store"..and don't come back! There are signs posted requesting their faces and noses are covered. The manager spoke to me and apologized for her behavior but this woman should never have any contact with customers with that terrible attitude. I'm sure it won't matter since they do a great business, but we will never be back. Update:The owner Keith responded with a totally in accurate portrayal of the events. The woman behind the counter did not ask my wife three or four times to put her mask back on since she never took it off. No one went behind the plexiglass. The issue of their employees not wearing masks properly and preparing food was never addressed in his response. No one caused a scene in front of the store. In fact, people came up to us and told us how poorly the woman in the store acted toward us. By the way, she needed a hairnet to be working with food as her hair was quite disheveled. Apparently, KeithWas not given accurate information by his employees. For her to say she was not nasty is a complete lie. read more

My friend and I found this spot while on a bike ride and decided to try it out. We got the chocolate croissants and more or less embarrassed ourselves eating them as we were still paying for them and then getting more. We then went overboard and got the garlic bread, olive bread, and the beer bread. The first two were gone by that night and the last was saved for a party that was asked about a a lot. Personally My favorite was the beer bread but I can live off of those croissants easily. I was gonna give 4 stars cause I feel weird giving 5 but my friend and I were incredibly loud and obnoxious and the people working there took us in stride and were nice as hell! read more

Before we headed home from the beach after a long Easter weekend we stopped by Old World Breads after reading some reviews. Oh my goodness, just walking into the place you feel like you gained 10 pounds, the heavenly smells of the bread and pastries wrap you in a delicious, warm hug. We purchased a loaf of rye bread, a Lemon Rosemary Scone and after one sample of the soft pretzels we bought one of those as well along with the Country Apricot Mustard. Everything was absolutely delicious and the gentleman,Brian, who waited on us was very friendly and helpful. I had a chance to check out the fresh made soups and salads as well and will definitely be picking up some of those when we come back down in May. read more

I found out about this place from going to the farmers market. Each week I would try a new loaf and really have been enjoying their breads. I especially liked the olive loaf and the cinnamon raisin bread. They were so good that today when they didn't attend the farmers market, I drove to their store and I was blown away. The store is a little off the beaten path so I was expecting it to be quiet. We pulled up and the place was packed. The cases were stocked with a huge selection of items ranging from quiches to chicken pot pies to all sorts of cookies and pastries. I highly recommend a trip! read more

I'm torn over my rating on this one because while the quality and taste of the items I purchased were pretty great, the owner and his quality of customer service left a lot to be desired. Maybe he should stay in the kitchen and hire a front end manager to kick up the customer service game because I will not go back after the way I was treated, not even for good bread. read more

We had both types of quiche and an apple pie. By far the best I've ever had of both. The apple pie is not the generic kind you get at most bakeries. Hard to describe but it's probably the best apple dessert I've ever had. The apples aren't mushy and it still has that sweet filling mixed throughout with a crunchy crumble on top. Picked it up during the quarantine and they had a good system to keep distance and minimize contact. read more

I bought an ancient grain loaf at the farmer's market on Thursday. When I got home and cut off a slice, I was disappointed to see that the entire middle of the loaf was not fully baked. In fact, there is a large whole running through the interior of the loaf, surrounded by half baked bread dough. Only the exterior half inch of so of the loaf was actually fully baked. I did taste the baked part of the bread and it was tasty, but for an $8 loaf I expect my bread to be both tasty and properly baked. read more

I have been unsuccessful in finding a good source for Italian breads and rolls in this area, and I was hopeful in finding some here. The name Old World Breads also sounded attractive to me. When I stepped inside I found a wonderful array of baked goods, as well as a nice selection of refrigerated items. I bought some Italian rolls, a loaf of Italian bread, and a loaf of rye bread. So far we have tried the rolls and the rye bread, and put the Italian loaf in the freezer. I am sorry to say that I was disappointed in the rolls. A good Italian bread or rolls should be moist and thick on the inside as well as soft and absorbant, with a thin and crispy crust. The inside of these was rather dry and spongy, lacking flavor, and the crust lacked the thinness and crispiness that makes Italian bread so good. In addition, we had some unused slices of this bread that did not spoil or turn mouldy after being on the counter for well over a week, which leads me to think they may be using additives in their bread to prevent spoilage. That is the kind of thing I would expect in mass-produced supermarket breads, but I would hope not to find it in breads from a local bakery. The rye bread was good, but tasted as though the proportion of rye flour should be increased to give it a little more rye flavor. I would have returned to try other items if it were not for my suspicions about the additives they may be using, which can be harmful to human health. I would welcome reassurance from their management if this not the case. read more

I have always recommended Old World Breads for bead, rolls and sweet treats. This is my first Thanksgiving purchase and I will order again next year. Love this place. The chicken pies are terrific comfort food. The cinnamon rolls shaped like dog bones have the texture and delicate flavor of pastries in France. The brown butter cookies taste like me grandma's. The fruit tarts taste like real fruit not just sugar. The savory scones are a nice change from sweet. I discovered Old World Breads a few years ago while I was shopping at one of the local Sunday farmers markets and just wow! Their soups and sandwiches are so amazing! oh and the apple pie we got for Thanksgiving was gone in no time ! You can't find bread like that anywhere in our area! My son loves their chicken pot pies! And their croissants are a must try!! Their staff is so sweet and they are always ready to tell you everything about how they make their pastries. I love this bakery! The best bread in town. The organic whole wheat rye is my favorite although there hasn't been a bread there I didn't swoon over when tasting including the cinnamon raisin. The brownies are pretty divine too and the staff are always incredibly friendly and welcoming. read more

We purchased an Apple crumb pie for Thanksgiving. It was the worst Apple pie ever. Absolutely no flavor, and the crumb topping tasted as if it had lard in it. Even the quiche we bought was awful. The filling broke apart and didn't hold. The raisin bread was no better than the pre-packaged brands in the grocery store, and the honey butter at a cost of $5.00, was a hardened clarified greasy substance with honey (awful). I can't speak any better of the cookies either. We have patronized this bakery for three years, and never been dissatisfied. Usually, we visit Delaware a number of times during the year, but this was our only trip this year. Whatever you did, undo it. Use real butter, real eggs, authentic ingredients. And, the left-over Apple pie was tossed in the trash, it honestly was that bad. That's the key word, honesty. Quite frankly, you should be ashamed of your product and the price you charged. read more

Visited OWB on a Monday afternoon (no baking done for Monday) but we feasted on what was available. The quiche was awesome (we took home a veggie one and a bacon one). We also bought a loaf of cranberry walnut bread - really good. While there another customer arrived looking for chicken pot pie, which she told us was out of this world. But all sold out. We can't wait to go back and try it and other goodies. read more
