Signs say that it opened during the reign of England's Elizabeth I and in case you're wondering, she reigned between 1558 and 1603. It may have been the oldest place I've ever stayed in, at least until I got to the next town on my journey. Here's what I did at The White Hart: * I sat in the bar/pub and had drinks * I took a luxurious bath in the very roomy, deep, comfortable bathtub * I had breakfast in the morning (included, but nothing I remember) and * I slept, well, in the quiet, clean, slightly roomy but in no way fancy, room I'd booked. I'd not go out of my way for another stay at The White Hart but neither would I object to another stay here. The White Hart provided a very comfortable, quiet stay, right on Swindon's High Street, an easy walk to the town's other restaurants and pubs. It is impressive to imagine that a place dating back to the 1500's still stands let alone that it's fit for sleeping, dining, and drinking in. The White Hart is all of those things and sometimes, that's all that's needed.

The fish and chips was described as a fillet of reasonably sourced cod weighing between eight to ten ounces, but I'd say it was the tail end of it, the fish being very thin and dry. You also don't expect to find a LOT bones in your fish and chips so that wasn't very pleasant for him either. It had a nice golden batter though, but I suppose that's irrelevant when the contents are disagreeable. The mushy peas were watery and vile tasting, everyone agreed. The Veggie's were pleased with their nut roasts and the rest of us had beef. I specifically asked for mine to be rare and was pretty pleased with it but the rest of the beefs were a bit tough and gristly. The vegetables came on a plate to share between three which I always hate because as some of you may have already established - I'm a pig! They were nothing to write home about, my pet hate is diced carrots and they were unseasoned, cold and shrivelled :( It would have been nice if they'd have cleaned the tables up after each course as it started to look a bit grubby and cluttered. The puds weren't fab either. The waitress's were very sweet with my little boy though and allowed him to take some orders and even see the kitchen and chef so that was a nice touch. The staff are very accommodating. There's a good amount of parking space at the back. All in all, I wouldn't make a big fuss of the food but it is such a lovely pub to come and have a drink in if you're ever in the picturesque little village of Wanborough. I discovered Three Crowns while working as a consultant in nearby Swindon one summer. This cozy pub was the "go-to" spot whenever the team needed a break from our normal routine (hotel food or late night kebab trucks). Particularly memorable was the "Taste of the Wild"-- kangaroo, ostrich, and venison. The meat wasn't too gamy, and cream sauce was amazing! The homemade desserts are also fantastic. They even have a proper English cheese tray that they roll right up to your table. The Stilton I tried was far and away the best I've ever eaten. And cheese for dessert! Boy, the British sure know how to live! It's a lovely drive into the countryside (including some sketchy single-lane roads!) and well worth it once in a while to splurge on a great meal!

All the meals came out without a hitch and everybody seemed to enjoy them, the cake was set up and displayed beautifully and again the service was top notch. And then an evening spread came out, perfectly cut finger sandwiches so many different kinds all so fresh also sausage rolls, quiche, man what a meal. The Horse and Groom is a perfect location for your pre-party and your wedding, with a beautiful setup in the Stables. Oh and of course let's not forget the Inn part, the rooms are just magical upstairs in the top of a 400-year-old pub are some most beautifully decorated rooms. Our room was The Avon up three flights of stairs perched in the very top of the beautiful pub through a magical little door slips you in to a perfectly sized room very well appointed with a nice bed that boy I slept well in, not to mention the bathroom was beautiful the overall stay could not have been better. I was taken here on a date once and thoroughly impressed with the taster menu for the pudding. There must have been at least seven or eight individual puddings on our tray. Second time around, I was taken with friends on a Sunday (they allowed a dog - which is good if you like dogs - a bit distracting if not). The alternative to Sunday roast - was nut roast - but done with a fantastic meaty consistency and flavour. I was left wanting more. The price was reasonable, and less than I had expected to pay. Although lunch was great - I feel there is more to be had from this place if you're going for dinner. Look out for the authentic wall illustrations - these are originals and signed by the author. Of course there are vintage photgraphs of hunting and grooming scenes - but this didn't bother me so much. It's all done in a 'Ralph Lauren' stage-set sort of way - but works elegantly. I can't wait to go back and try something new. I anticipate this will be great in the summer as there's lots of parking and outdoor space.
