We visited The Village Inn, Liddington on a Thursday lunchtime. It's an Arkells pub that advertises…read moreLocally sourced, genuine home-cooked pub food. There were four of us and we ordered steak & ale pie with mash and veg, 6oz rump steak with chips and peas, and two Plato de Gambos. Service was prompt and polite. The meals arrived in a reasonable timeframe. Three of the meals deserve mention and unfortunatley not positive. The steak was rare as ordered but burnt on the outside, the chips were cooked from frozen. The Plato de Gambas was advertised as crayfish tails, prawns, squid and white fish in a tomato and basil sauce, served with rice what arrived was something that looked like overcooked ratatouile on a bed of rice. Further investigation of my portion revealed a small amount of prawns, a crayfish tail, a couple of pieces of squid ring and a small piece of white fish. The other plate had slightly more squid and several pieces of meat, possibly chicken! The vegetables were mushy and tasteless, the squid like rubber and the prawns like bullets. We returned these meals to the bar as they were inedible and was asked to return to our table. A member of staff came over and offered us alternative meals, we opted for cheese and biscuits. The cheese was good and came a selection of crackers and butter. Sometime after leaving the pub, the two diners who had the returned meals got upset tummies. We reported this to the pub, so they could address any issues. We were informed that these meals had been bought in and were frozen!

Popped down to Swindon this weekend to set up Mr. Snarky's temporary accommodations while I am on…read morehiatus to the states. On Sunday we were a bit restless (the new place is a bit... small) so we decided to go for a walk. After walking around Coate Water, it was quite chilly (not as cold as what I am headed towards this week) and we wanted to warm up a bit. We saw The Sun Inn on our way to Coate Water, so we decided to pop in. It was quite busy with lots of locals. Most were having drinks at the bar, but there were some people having food in the other rooms/areas. One of the staff noticed that we were looking pretty clueless, so she came over and asked if she could help. We ended up ordering a bowl of chips and a pot of tea... snacks of champions! It is a dog friendly place as we did see a couple of dogs with ramblers who were in for food. They also have a microwave for families that need to warm up baby food! While we were waiting, we could see from the window that they have loads of tables outside, some in a covered area and others uncovered. There is also a large playground for the kids. I bet this place is very popular in the summer! While tea wasn't anything special... the chips. The chunky chips were wonderful. A heaping bowlful of golden (closer to the darker side of golden), piping hot chips was just what we needed. I don't know if they do the triple fry method, but whatever they do, they are delicious! They do have a three-meat Sunday Carvery, but as their board outside states, when it is gone, it is gone. And when we were there, it was long gone. The menu is on the board at the bar, there is also another board in the main dining area... no paper menus. Great place to fuel up after a walk in the park!
