Fish and chips
Ryan L.

Came here with my group tour, atmosphere was super cozy, warm and inviting. The fish and chips was good, I ate my plate however I was not jaw dropped. The food came out quick and the wait staff was very helpful in refilling our water! Overall worth the stop if you are in the area!

We loved this inn! Had an early morning breakfast hereafter a visit to Stonehenge --it was lovely. The Food was delicious! I had oatmeal that I still don't know how the proprietress made it taste so yummy! Others had eggs Benedict and full English brekkies! No complaints! Coffee delicious, too! Let bed the setting and the beautiful old inn!

Goat cheese hash (vegetarian)

Didn't expect much in the way of vegetarian food and it doesn't even come up in "food" listing on Yelp, but delightfully surprised. Looks like a pub, tastes gourmet. Baked Camembert is like fondue, gooey sticky hot yum. Goat cheese hash an excellent choice. Well done mocha. Partner said sausages left something to be desired.

This was a great lunch stop while visiting Lacock, since it is has a nice location right across from the Abbey, tasty food, and decent service. It is in a historical building from the 1700s, though the interiors have been updated, so a little bit of the charm is lost (compared to other around England). They had a decent selection of food, and we settled on the macaroni and cheese, fish & chips, and a pint, which came to just over 25 GBP and definitely fit the bill.

The salmon spread was incredible!

While this place might need to work on how to deal with influxes of people at one time--think tours--the food was great, solid pub food. I would definitely go back if in the area.

What a lovely pub, idyllic location in the heart of Lacock and owned by Wadsworth brewery. We didn't eat but the food looked fantastic, the new 'Corvus' stout is the best Irish style stout I have tasted outside of Ireland, with a beer like that .... who needs food

They had a good selection of local ales and cider and a nice fireplace (perfect for a chilly fall day).

We pre-ordered and had the choice between fish and chips, steak pie, and a vegetarian option. We strolled through this lovely town and had a big room in the back for our group. We had a nice table for 4 and the food came out quickly. They were a fine oiled machine and the draft beer was tasty too. The fish and chips was one large piece of fish that was perfectly fried. It was not too heavy. The steak pie was good, salty, but good and had a decent amount of meat. Our server was friendly and talkative and when we finished, we paid at the front.

The pub is famous for a dog wheel that once was operated by a specially bred dog to turn a spit to roast meat. I'd never seen anything like this! The dog basically uses the wheel like a treadmill which turns the spit on the other side of the wall over a fire. The pub has low ceilings and doors typical of its 675 year history. Outside is a courtyard with additional seating complete with a stockade. We enjoyed a pint of the Wadworth's 6X Original Ale. The beer was delicious. The bartender was friendly to our motley crew. Many visitors were enjoying dinner. The fish and chips looked amazing. There is limited free street parking and a public lot about a block away. I love this little pub.

This place is a little gem, well worth the detour from Tiverton if you are passing through Devon or…read moreSomerset. The staff were really friendly and welcoming when we arrived and encouraged us to try some locally sourced ciders and gin. There were three menu options - a la carte, an extensive specials menu and a set three course weekend lunch. The food has a fine dining feel in a relaxed, casual setting. The duck two ways was a real highlight.

The UK is literally littered with country pubs, and in many cases it's sad to say, but…read moreappropriately phrased perhaps, that what they serve up as food is pretty rubbish. The phrase 'home cooked' seems to have been superceded my the concept of 'van delivered' all too often. Thankfully that's not the case at the Five Bells in Clyst Hydon. It's one of the very first places I visited when I moved to Devon many years ago, as a friend recommended it, and I've been returning ever since. It's the kind of place you turn to where you just know you won't be disappointed, a foodies rock in an otherwise tempestuous chain pub ocean. The pub's one many awards over the years, so I won't go on about how tasty the food is, but I will say that one of the nice things I've always liked about it is that they are still experimenting. Sure you can get your english staples there like steak & kidney pudding, game pate, treacle pudding, etc., but also other treats such as mediterranean tarts. The chef here is one of those increasingly rare beasts, someone who really knows what to buy and how to cook it. It's not some kind of reinvented gastro pub either - it's just a good pub with good food - why is that so hard to manage anymore? I should say they also stock a fine range of drinks, including the Otter beers, once of Devon's best breweries. Then there's the location and the pub itself. Buried deep in the heart of Devon, near some great woods (with some interesting mushrooms to hunt), wonderful gardens outside and an interior that just seems to keep on going, full of nooks and crannies, games to play, old books to read and much more. I once took a friend and his (very small) three girls for lunch there and the owners and staff didn't blink an eye. Sure they made sure we were tucked around the corner a bit but the girls didn't mind and all loved the food! If that isn't enough to tempt you then how about the fact that Clyst Hydon itself has it's very own lido just round the corner from the pub? Just check the Google map and you'll see it just next door. All in all this place is a gem. A little hard to find perhaps but if you can find it, then you deserve it. P.S. There's a two course lunch menu at £7.95 available from Monday - Thursday and Saturday. This is my favourite as I never know what I'm getting till I turn up at the pub.
