I've been trying to find the time to visit Old School Diner for weeks now, and I finally had an opportunity to this evening. It's just like the people say, the exterior looks like a rundown shack between residentials, with carpeting all over the parking lot leading into the dining hall, of which the walls are lined photos of visitors with Chef Jerome (one of Ben Affleck's best friends) and set memorabilia from mafia films/shows. My server suggested that I order the most popular menu item, the wheelchair sampler. As soon as it came out, I immediately referenced Bruce Bogtrotter from "Matilda" and Gluttony from "Se7en." I oscillated between taking heaping bites of my meal and walking around the dining hall to get my bearings. I stayed in there for so long because the service was so personable and the food was BOMB! I didn't want to stop eating, as full as I was, because it was so good. Those were the most tender ribs I've had in years, and all of the sauces were housemade with secret recipes. When I finally decided to saddle up and carry my to-go boxes (which is going to last me for a full week) out, Chef Jerome introduced me to his pet macaw, Maxine, who affirmed that I overstayed my welcome when she screamed, "Bye-BYE!!!" when I finished petting her I'm going to get a group together and come back *very* soon. My wife and I had the distinct pleasure and Honor of sharing a out of this world fried shrimp meal at Chef Jerome's "house".He by far is a Unique man who not only is a great chef but an Even better person.We arrived late but he kept the kitchen open just for us.To say the shrimp was the best we have ever had would not do his skill as a chef justice.The hush puppies and homemade slaw were also beyond delicious.But what separates this modest " end of the road"small restaurant from anywhere else is the overwhelming since of family it immerses you in.In fact he comes out of the kitchen to ask his"family" what they want to eat!The place is walled with pictures of him with his guests as well as some of the most incredible memorabilia we have seen anywhere! Arrived and it was located back off the path, carpeted dirt floor parking lot, very unique decor... Greeted by super nice waitress Gabby. We went with the recommendations of many on Yelp and chose the Wheelchair platter. Plenty of food for Me and the husband. This by far has been my best meal I've had all year. The seafood is better than any I've ever had before. The ribs are so great not only are they juicy fall off the bone but heck the bones are tender. The atmosphere is so nice. Memories and photos cover the walls. The wait staff wait on you hand and foot. You'll never have to ask for anything. Chef comes to meet you and you swear he is family. It's great to hear God Bless You as you leave. After hearing much hype - thanks to Ben Affleck's visit a few years ago - we were prepared to be disappointed. BUT - we weren't. We were all scared to try the wheelchair platter* - but we still wound up with huge portions of tasty food. What is a memorable restaurant! The quirky, kooky, kitschy decor is truly one of a kind. This place has absolutely no signage from the road, and you do feel slightly uncomfortable pulling up the back alley to this wacky restaurant. If you see the toilet planters you are headed in the right direction, haha. Once we got brave enough to stop and go inside, we were so glad that we did. The food was fantastic. The service was excellent. And Chef jerome came out to personally meet us at our table. There are framed magazine articles inside saying that Ben Affleck is a regular here. This is truly an experience beyond more than just a restaurant. This place would be packed if it had a better location in downtown Savannah, and wasn't hidden like it is. read more

Ok, was driving at night looking for this place. When I pulled up to the shack, literally, I thought it was going to be a bad horror movie. But turns out, it was awesome! We got there when they were getting ready to close, but the chef still keep the place open. He greets everyone and tells them about his celebrity customers. Ordered the wheelchair platter and now know why it's called that. You need a wheelchair to bring out the food, or a wheelchair to leave after you eat all the food. The fried seafood was some of the best I've had, ever! I don't know how they fry, but's it not greasy like a lot of places. My husband and I went with another couple on a Saturday night. There were very few people eating at the restuarant. All the staff could say was that it would be packed in a little while. The crowd never came. We ordered the Wheelchair platter for four. It was terribly overpriced for the food we got. There was only 1 rib per person. Others have made the comment that they ate until they were full and took half of the platter home. That can't be true or they have changed the platter. We split the shrimp and got 6 shrimp each. There were 8 small pieces of fish. Eight pieces of fish, 24 shrimp and 4 ribs is not $88 worth. Sorry. Very disappointed. We won't be going back or recommending this place. read more

Chef Jerome makes some mighty fine fried fresh seafood and the hushpuppies are fantastic. The barbecue and the other options leave much to be desired. I had to give 1 star because it want allow you to give ZERO stars. We drove almost 2 hours to eat seafood, as this place came highly recommended. We get there and we all decided to have the Wheel Chair for 4 and the waitress, with every question, said trust the chef, trust the chef. Well, we did and we were very disappointed. We where there to eat seafood, not bbq ribs or Mac and cheese. We only got shrimp, and fish on our "supposedly" huge wheel chair platter. The owner/chef didn't even come out to greet us or to see how our 1st and ONLY dining experience went at his restaurant. As we were leaving he decided to come out to greet the only other table in the Resturant but never once came to greet us or ask us how we felt about our food. Very Disappointing and the meal wasn't cheap. 6 pieces of fish and maybe 2 dozen fried shrimp was not worth 106.00 with ribs and microwave Mac and cheese as the rest of the meal. read more

It was a dark and stormy night. Two couples in their early 20's drove down a lone country road to what seemed like a sure death by a family of deranged serial killers - - but instead we turned right at the big purple sign that said "Old School Diner" and slowly drove up onto the famed carpeted parking lot. Being a rainy Sunday, there was only one other car in the parking lot which really only added to the strange atmosphere. While the drive in was downright creepy, the rest of the evening was anything but. We were greeted by some of the nicest people who expertly led us through a maze of added on rooms and to our table in the main dining area. We all stared wide eyed at the movie memorabilia and pictures of past guests that covers every wall from floor to ceiling. In terms of food-- my boyfriend and I didn't drive the 40 minutes to get anything but the famous "wheelchair platter". While we waited, the most heavenly hushpuppies I have ever had were delivered to our table. When the wheelchair platter arrived, it was a heaping tray of shrimp, oysters, whiting, deviled crab-- all fried of course, and BBQ ribs. Everything was tasty (although I really hate whiting), but the fried shrimp were the best I have ever had. I would go back just for them. The only disappointment was that the wheelchair platter did not come out on an actual wheelchair or on a wheel or something crazy like I thought it might. Chef Jerome came out mid meal to greet us and take pictures. He gave each of us a grade-A hug and was genuinely happy that we were enjoying ourselves. I was in a meeting when the issue of food came up. I was told that Old School was a must to have dinner. I took my wife the next day. We travel approx. 56 mile (one way), in about 46 min. It was worth every second. As I was told, the parking lot is paved with carpet, but don't let that turn you around; get out, and go in; cause the food is great. Every word was true. The thousands of photos on the wall is a dizzifying sight. Then Chef Jerome comes out to hug you and you feel at home in the backwoods of Coastal Georgia.
