We stopped by for lunch recently and ordered off the menu. The wait was 30-minutes for our entrees. The food was acceptable but not particularly tasty. This suggests to us the kitchen operation is optimized for buffet operation. Perhaps, there was a staffing challenge during our visit. Every restaurant can serve a less than stellar experience. I can't see how the restaurant is better than before in any way. It's gone downhill to me. The salad bar is bad with little choice and fresh vegetables aren't on it. It's the plain cheap iceberg lettuce and that's it. No good salad dressing. Have tried many times but never had a great meal with well prepared food. Kitchen staff turnover is continuous; you can hear the kids in the dining room playing in the kitchen. . If you have any class at all , Altman's may not be for you. Our group eats here often. This is a very family and community friendly place. The buffet is always well stocked and Thursday is pork chops done in different ways. The ambiance is super casual and if you don't do the buffet, the items on the menu are just as good. Perfect place for large groups but get there early for lunch because parking will be scarce. I got the crab cake sandwich and it was amazing! Generous portions. I avoid fried food, so I was happy to be able to get mashed potatoes instead of fries. Wow! If you're traveling north or south on I-95, I highly recommend you arrange to be hungry at mile marker 58 in Eulonia, GA. Altman's is within a mile of the interstate, so very convenient. The country cooking is real...real good. The fried chicken is crispy, not greasy and is tender. The coleslaw (as is everything else apparently) is homemade. The green beans are flavorful and the Mac and cheese will satisfy any aficionado of this dish. On this day, the buffet also offered lemon cake and peach cobbler for dessert. We were driving home from Florida and wanted a non chain place to get dinner. We saw it had a four start review so gave it a shot. I got the seafood platter. If you like lots of breading and no flavor then this is the place for you. I also wanted to use the restroom but decided that I did not have to go that bad. A prior reviewer mentioned a certain vibe here. This place clearly caters to locals. I was driving through on my way to Savannah and stopped based on the 4.0 Yelp ratings. I really wanted to like this place but I can't say it lives up to the 4.0 rating. Although I came in after the lunch rush, nearly every table was empty and dirty. I settled into my dirty table with buffet choices in hand and eventually a waitress came by and offered to wipe the table. The result was a puddle of water and a table that wasn't any cleaner than when I started. Service was sparse. Getting refills was a chore and I eventually asked another server who was happy to help. The buffet was what you'd expect at a small place: 3-4 meats and 5-6 vegetables. The salad bar was well stocked. Overall I'd give the food a 7/10. The Mississippi pot roast stole the show and everything else was solid. If I were a local, I might eat there every 2-3 weeks. Since there's not much else around, that's a shame. read more

The food I ate at this lunch buffet was great. The salad bar had more on it than I expected and all was fresh. They had multiple choices of meat. I had meatloaf and cubed steak with onion gravy. We've been wanting to try Altman's for many years. We finally got our chance on Thursday for lunch when we were headed to Shellman bluff to fish. We arrived at Altman's early (about 1030am) and waited until the buffet was ready at 11am. A friendly young waitress greeted us when we came in and got our drinks. At 11am there were about 18 people waiting to dive to the buffet or get some take out plates. Mostly locals, sheriff deputies, workers, some seniors. It was nice & cool in there. The buffet was $9.50. This includes drink, salad bar & desert too. There was a good selection of Fried pork chops, grilled pork chops with onions & bell peppers, fried chicken, etc. Lots of vegetables like greens, white acre peas, collards, etc. The fried chicken was super hot (temp) so be careful before you bite. It was hot & fresh but didn't have much flavor. It was a good meal & we are glad that we tried it. We prefer B&J's chicken & their lunch buffet to Altman's but would go there again & maybe order off the menu or try their shrimp. read more

Kim was amazingly helpful steering us to a great dinner experience. The fried okra was crispy and great tasting. The blackened shrimp was spicy and a very generous pound. Okay so we got there before the Sunday rush. We didn't want the buffet. We waited over 20 minutes after we got our sweet tea and menus. We never got waited on. We ended up leaving. We left the waitress a $1 tip. The cashier charged us $5.38 for the tea. Even after my hubby told her that we had waited so long. The saddest part of this story is that I love Altmans seafood. I've eaten here twice. They were under different management both times. The service was horrible and the food was horrible. I ordered a hamburger because nothing else sounded appealing. When I received the over priced burger, I was disappointed. If I wanted a frozen Bubba burger I could've stayed home. McDonald's even has this place beat when it comes this burger. When I shared my opinion in private with the manager, they got real nasty and rude about it. Sorry, if I was trying to save you some embarrassment of a bad review!!! Geez! This was our first stop when we arrived to Darien, GA. We were starving and wanted something quick but delicious. Altman was exactly that. The fried shrimp sandwich is to die for, recommend it 10/10. My boyfriend got the fried chicken dinner meal and it was very good and my brother got a cheese burger that was also pretty good.
