This was our first stop when we arrived to Darien, GA. We were starving and wanted something quick but delicious. Altman was exactly that. The fried shrimp sandwich is to die for, recommend it 10/10. My boyfriend got the fried chicken dinner meal and it was very good and my brother got a cheese burger that was also pretty good. The only place around to eat so we gave them multiple tries over the past few years (all takeout) but I guess it all depends who's working for what kind of food & service u get because twice we had delicious burgers & the other 3 times it was disgusting! Was traveling with my son on his way to college and we like to look for local owned neighborhood haunts. We scored a good one here. Come check them out, the quality of the food and the price is worth it. Drinks came fast then a little slow on the order taking but well worth it. The prices are good and the food is well cooked and delicious. I ordered their version of the blooming onion and it was crispy and well cooked, the taste was actually better than the last few I have had from Outback and not greasy like outbacks always are. Had the buffalo shrimp, had the hot sauce that was just above a medium in my book but was seasoned well. My son had the cheeseburger and fries, said they were both very good. No consistency - second visit - My Mother's chicken sandwich was a chicken breast that had clearly been cooked earlier then 'dropped again' to heat it up rendering it the consistency of chicken jerky. And the French fries were barely battered and limp and soggy. The batter on my fish was soggy and limp as well. And our lackluster server, Ashley, greeted us by 'warning' us that she didn't work here (side-eye) but she was just helping out for the weekend - while 3 other servers sat at a table taking a break. Lucky us! And no apology from Ashley when I got up to request a cup of water WITHOUT a piece of hair floating on the top of it (after waiting 10 minutes for her to check on us to no avail). Whelp! She didn't lie - she told us she didn't work here - then proceeded to show us just how true that statement was. Lol. Can't think of one redeeming characteristic. Questionable whether chicken was done. Barely a scoop of green beans left. Mashed potatoes had an off taste. Maybe instant? Lima beans and blackeyed peas ok. Peach cobbler was really bad...thick crust over canned peaches. Even the "clean" salad plates were dripping wet and had to be dried with a napkin before using. Altman's is a simple, seafood-centric, family-run restaurant in tiny Eulonia, Georgia. They're near the coast, and for that matter a part of coastal Georgia where swamps are woven with rivers and branches and where boats can be more effective transportation than wheeled vehicles: if you go east of Eulonia, you'll soon encounter this situation. So it makes sense that seafood is a big deal around here, and Altman's serves up the expected fried fish and fried shrimp plus fried chicken and some not-fried dishes as well. The interior and decor are nautical and humble--it's clearly a restaurant aiming to cater to locals and to keep prices down while keeping quality high. I had the pecan-encrusted fried fish platter which comes with two sides and lemon butter. The piece of fish was enormous, just spectacular in size and I couldn't finish it. The pecan batter was tasty but the lemon butter seemed more appropriate for crab claws than for a fried fish like this: I'm not sure how the chef decided that drawn butter went with the pecan-encrusted fish, but ok. The sides I selected were the fried okra and coleslaw. As other reviewers have already noted, everything appears to be made fresh from scratch here, and that included the fried okra which is something you almost never ever see homemade. Most restaurants no matter how down-home will opt for frozen fried okra it seems. The fried okra here was much larger than the frozen variety, more flavorful, and the batter more delicate and crisp without tasting dried-out. I imagine this is how fried okra ought to taste and probably tasted in olden times before most of us only came to experience it as a frozen food. The coleslaw was not anything unusual or that impressive but I think also homemade. Overall, the platter was a very good deal and very tasty. My waitress was a super-sweet middle-aged lady who clearly likes the restaurant she works at; we talked about wild animals like possums and wild hogs and living in the country a while and she also kept my unsweet tea (which also was very good) filled. While I cannot say there was (at least in what I ate) anything beyond the okra which was utterly outstanding or unique, the overall experience and service as well as food were first-rate and certainly four stars, maybe even four and a half. Wow! We stopped at Peach World and asked for a restaurant recommendation and they recommended Altman's. It's about a mile or so off of 95, but worth the extra little jaunt. The food was delicious and the people were wonderful! We had the buffet which was all slap-your-mama home cooking. Husband had meatloaf, I tried the pork medallions in gravy, and we both had fried chicken. It was all so tasty. The fried chicken was my favorite--perfectly cooked, perfectly seasoned. They also had a yellow sheet cake with thick chocolate frosting. I gave serious consideration to slurping all the frosting off the entire cake, but remembered my manners and held back. I sort of consider myself a sweet tea sweet tooth and Altman's sweet tea was perfect. Fresh, the right amount of sweet, and lots of ice. With the way locals rave about this place I expected much better. We've been here 4 times. Only one serve (never ours) seems to be pleasant and able to do her job (and helps others). This time was the last time we will waste our time and money at this location. The food has always been inconsistent. This time the buffet was disappointing..... I ended up with a salad and 1 piece of chicken ( that wasn't even that great). We ordered our kids food off the menu. 3 grown adults ate more than 2 rounds of food as we waited .... after an hour and my husband going up to complain we received our kids food. I made a comment about the time and the said it's because we ordered off the menu. (So unless you have a lot of time to sit around and wait don't order off the menu). The food is great! But this place is hit or miss. Also don't expect them to have your call in order ready any time they say it will be ready. Have had this issue literally any time I have called in a pick up order and even gave ample time past the time they gave me to make sure it was ready. It seems like they do not even start the order until you get there every time. Also had the issue of calling in an order tonight and then getting there to pick it up and getting informed that half of the order would not be available because they were out? We stopped here for lunch. We are not averse to small, local places or diners so thought we'd give it a whirl. It seemed to get lots of positive reviews so I did not balk at the unpreposessing appearance. However I fail to see why it has been given these reviews. Firstly it seemed to talk about seafood and there is even a fish on the logo, but the seafood options are few and far between. We were told to Seay ourselves, which doesn't bother me but when you don't have a menu at the table and leave me twiddling my thumbs I get antsy. They had a small buffet - which also featured zero seafood but a decent salad bar section. We ordered a club sandwich basket with fries for my husband, a chicken finger basket with fries (which the menu said came with bread which we never got), and I got a cup of crab (!) stew and 1 trip to the salad bar. All the food I tried from the salad bar was mediocre at best, or in the case of the corn on the cob, mushy and inedible. The crab stew had a fair bit of crab in it, however I also got several lukewarm to cold chunks of potato, and I did not like the flavor. As they were finishing their baskets, Mt husband found the final fun addition of a dead fly stuck to one of his French fries. This i will chalk up to a rather unfortunate accident. Great small place not far off of I-95. We were looking for a Cracker Barrel or some place like that when my wife found Altman's. It is in a small town with not much else there. I had a bacon cheeseburger, my wife had a crispy chicken sandwich, and our son had fried shrimp. We also had battered fries, which had a thin coating of batter with some spices. We stopped for lunch around 1:15 pm on a Friday. The place was very crowded which is usually a good sign. However the fried chicken was cold and they never refilled the mashed potatoes. The buffet area could have used a wiping down. On a positive note, the iced tea was very good, all of the staff was very nice, and our waitress was courteous and prompt with tea refills. We ordered shrimp baskets from the menu and we felt like we were eating yesterday's leftovers. The fries were cold and the shrimp were over fried. We arrived just as breakfast was being pulled up and the crew was setting up for lunch on the buffet. There is also a menu available. Even after sitting in a warmer tray for a while every thing was really good. I would love to get my hands on one of those biscuits when it was fresh out of the oven. Bacon, link and patty sausage, eggs and cinnamon french toast rounded out the plate. As we were leaving the cooks were setting out Sunday lunch. Tried out the lunch buffet around 1:30 on a Sunday. They weren't refilling the food at that point so we were scraping the sides of the pans to try the food but it was pretty good. Fried chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy, mac'n'cheese, rice, green beans, creamed corn and Lima beans. There may have been another meat dish or side but we didn't try it. The salad bar had a lot of toppings to choose from too. The table was dirty but a waitress wiped it down for us after a minute or two when we got there. Lots of cars in the parking lot and lots of people inside so we knew it would be good. We stopped here on a Saturday around 6:00 p.m..The waitress said they only had buffet for breakfast and lunch. The restaurant had been recommended by several local merchants down the street. Dress is casual. My husband ordered the fried pork chop with butter beans and fried okra. I ordered the grilled pork chop with sweet potato fries and a salad. We each received three pork chops all cooked to perfection. The sweet potato fries were crisp and delightful, as was the fried okra. The salad was still buffet stile, but was limited in variety. So my husband and I just moved to the area around McIntosh county and we had friends visiting from Florida. We were taking them to breakfast so we picked Altmans since it was close to 95. We got there at 9:15 and got a table. We decided we did not want the breakfast buffet so we ordered off the menu. We patiently waited for our food and when it was 10:15 and still didn't have our food we asked about it. The receptionist is a crotchety gruff woman and basically was very annoyed at us for asking. Most of the other patrons were eating the buffet so they came and went. Our waitress whom we think is the receptionist daughter was equally rude to our requests for things. Finally, after an hour and 10 minutes we got our food. All of our orders were wrong and missing items so when we brought this to the waitress's attention she rolled her eyes and went to the receptionist and whispered to her about us. While eating we over heard another customer (local) talking to the receptionist about us and the receptionist replied "they think they need to be spoiled or something". At this point we were all pretty fed up with their behavior apologizing to our guests for such horrendous service and behavior. I will never step foot in this restaurant again. We are regular people that are polite and down to earth. I for the life of me don't understand number one, why they are so busy with their attitude and number two how they can justify being so rude to a paying customer. After paying the bill the receptionist never said thank you and treated our friend with prejudice and unkindness. A business left to die is my first comment about this place. I arrived during the lunch hour and they were quite busy. Walking in there was a stifled hello and a please sit where you like. The restroom I used to wash before eating was a closet and no room for changing a baby. The floor was not an option and the ladies room was just as small and no changing table either. Upon getting back to my table the waitress was quite pushy and no warm welcomes or suggestions beyond a buffett bar which is probably the cash cow. I ate what the menu called deviled crab which was all filling with no crab taste. It was fried in old grease which hardened and darkened the outside of the cake. Certainly not worth the 13 dollars paid. Located east by a half a mile once you exit the I-95 at number 58 it is reccommeded to leave it to the local clan. Unclean, uninviting and parking a hassle: The only plus is the drive through package store 50 feet away to buy the bourbon to wash the aweful taste out. read more

I love this place. Their lunch buffet is simply fantastic and priced reasonably...to say the least. Everything is home made on sight. Fried chicken, meatloaf, sausage and peppers, baked fish, ham.....every day there are atleast three meats served. Tons of veggies and a nice salad bar. Breakfast is very good too. My favorite is Fish & Grits. All you have to do is drive by about noon and you'll see a dozen trucks parked out front....that's a real good sign there's good food inside. read more
