I was sure this place was going to be amazing based off the reviews. Sadly it was super underwhelming. I got the chicken sandwich, and the chicken was so dry and old I had to drench it in bbq sauce to try and eat it without choking . I ended up having to just take the bread off and try and eat it that way because it kept falling off the bun. Nothing comes on it. It's just plain unseasoned chicken and a bun. It was as if they took it out of the fridge and put it in the microwave. I got Brunswick stew that tasted like nothing but canned peas. And the turnips had to of been out of a can. Maybe their nack is pork, but they definitely missed it on the chicken and turnips and stew. I've also never been to a bbq place in the south that doesn't have pickles for sandwiches. This was quite a pleasant surprise. Driving from FL to SC we pulled off 95 and found this little jewel. You order at the counter and your food is brought out. The interior is quaint and has a rustic feel. The seats are picnic tables. The meats were very well prepared and moist. Well, this place is disappointing. We stopped by for dinner given the high ratings. After our visit, we infer the ratings stem from locals who support this place but who may lack experience tasting quality southern BBQ, or from visitors who haven't experienced great southern BBQ and think this spot is an adequate representative of this category of eatery. We ordered two meals with drinks and desserts for around $58: Brisket plate ($18) Ribs plate with two sides ($21) Pros: Both meals come with buttered toast. Excellent! But we can make buttered toast at home. Two banana pudding desserts were tasty! Cons: The brisket and the ribs were overly salty, so much so that no amount of BBQ sauce could mask the taste. We wonder if they use MSG at this place. The BBQ sauce presents a sugary taste. So, we found ourselves trying to mask salt with sugar --- not smart or a great combination. All of the sides were either tasteless, foul, or both. Hair, we presume human hair, we're in our dishes of BBQ beans. The taste was foul -- just off. The potato salad was not fresh or homemade. We suspect it stems from a low-quality off-the-shelf product. The coleslaw had too much vinegar or some other additive. The taste was a departure from what most diners would expect for this offering. Worst of all was the Brunswick Stew --- not even close to what a competent chef in this region would call Brunswick Stew. In our case, a foul smell and taste were present --- we're not sure in retrospect what was in this offering. After we finished our toast and banana puddings and sampled the entrees, we got up, threw out the rest of our meal, and left. If you're hungry and looking for great BBQ along the Georgia Coast, hang on (if you're headed south) for another 40 minutes and exit I-95 at exit 38 for St Simons Island. We ordered ribs and brisket which were both delicious. HOWEVER.. there seemed to be a lot of loud commotion between staff while we were there. An older employee was loudly berating and was very clearly upset, all in front of customers, which created a very uncomfortable atmosphere. It really took away from the experience. Management seriously needs to improve in this behavior because it shouldn't be happening where guests can see and hear it. The brisket lives up to the hype with beautifully rendered flavorful fat and the house mild barbecue sauce has a perfect mustard vinegar base. Not to be confused the Smokin Pig in Clemson (technically Pendleton), THIS Smokin Pig place is the best BBQ I've had in the state of Georgia. The brisket is so damn good. I'm glad I had the sense to get the brisket plate and add BBQ. Fell off tThe sides I picked were baked beans (which I always have to check out) and a baked potato (more of a panic decision). based on all these other great reviews I was really looking forward to eating here. I had passed the Midway location a couple times after I moved down here and I had a real craving for barbecue. I was really looking forward to it. I finally got a chance to go try it with some friends over so I placed a large to go order for 2 pounds of pulled pork, 2 quarts of Brunswick stew, and some macaroni and cheese. I knew as soon as I walked in the door to a completely empty restaurant with no one even at the counter that I had made a mistake. Finally, after several attempts to let them know there was a customer out front (next to the cash register)..., some teenage girl came out of the back, asked my name and then handed me a bag that appeared to have my order in it. She at least said thank you and then disappeared into the back room again. When I got home, the pulled pork was mediocre at best but at least seemed like it was made the same day. The bag smelled funny all the way home and when I got there I realized why. I opened up the quart of Brunswick stew to find some totally burnt, liquid less mash of what might used to have been brunswick stew a few days ago. It smelled horrible and was like a solid mass of burnt gunk you would find at the bottom of one of those steamer pans in a cafeteria. The macaroni and cheese was edible but the Brunswick too smelled rotten and burnt and really took everyone's appetite away so I just threw the whole order away. I wasted over $70 with tip on taking a chance that a barbecue place in South Georgia, ironically very close to the city of Brunswick, might actually have decent barbecue and Brunswick stew. This place was horrible. So bad I'm not even going to bother calling them to try and do anything about it. I mean what would they do?, Give me a another meal like this? No thanks. The parking lot is a little rough and the building might be a bit dated but this is old school Georgia Bar-B-Q at its best. The pulled pork and chopped chicken were smoked perfect. The Bar-B-Q beans were a tad thick but really tasty. The cole slaw was excellent. The potato salad needed more mayo but was still good. We only bought one banana pudding because I've never been a fan but then we ended up fighting over it. It was incredibly good. It has to be grandma's recipe. The sweet tea was trailer park sweet. The menu is on a chalkboard when you first come in. They have written in capital letters that they do not serve fries. They do, however, have Mac n cheese and baked beans, so all is good. We tried the chicken plate and brisket plate with coleslaw. Everything was good, but the brisket was amazing. Moist and full of flavor. The chicken had a great smoky flavor also. Turned out to be a solid pulled pork sandwich with nice sides of slaw and turnip greens. The greens (eaten in my car) may have been my favorite part. That and the way they send order back by attaching slips with a weight to a line that goes back to the kitchen. The cashier flinched the order back on this little zip line. Very exciting. One of the worst aspects of road travel is finding a tasty meal that isn't unhealthy. Smokin' Pig is a healthy joint, but it does have some healthy options for customers to take advantage of. I came in a couple of days ago and preferred a 6oz BBQ chicken sandwich with two sides. I chose the coleslaw and baked beans. Service was fairly quick and the ladies at the register were pleasant although it was quite busy. We ate outside at one of the two outdoor tables. The chicken sandwich was good and I loved how it wasn't fried. I did however expect it to be pulled chicken. It was tasty with the sweet BBQ sauce I asked for. I did however not appreciate the regular hamburger bread that the sandwich came with. The coleslaw was pretty different from what I was expecting as well. It wasn't bad, but it was a sweet slaw but rather a mayonnaise and pepper based slaw. The baked beans are great. We don't eat pork so not a lot of luck with the sides as most veggies have pork or ham base (as one should expect from a restaurant named after a pig ).
