Not entirely a 5-star place (IYKYK) as it is more of a locally-known local's spot with exceptional food, bar-like super friendly service and provides an overall excellent experience. I now fully understand why I was brought here by a local. "You gotta check this place out", my local told me; however, be aware there is not a full bar and thus should be marked down a star, but the overall experience is 5-star. Our table ordered waaaay too much food (the portions are abundant), but we had to try the menu. Two med-rare and very tender rib-eye steaks (these were quite rare, but not blue), some deliciously crispy bacon (pork belly) and some Mac-n-cheese they call some kind of baked macaroni. It's very Mac-n-cheesy. Good though. The steaks come with a deliciously loaded baked potato and a spring salad. The plate is served with a serrated steak knife, which I have never cared for because the serrated tears the steak, and even more so on the rare steak. I used the butter knife and it was a very tender and flavorful steak. The table was also brought some very fresh and very crusty sourdough bread. Great stuff!!! All of the items brought to our table were very good except only one for which I have a complaint. The bacon (thick pork belly) needed a sauce of some sort. Although good, perfectly crunchy and smoky, if this was the only appetizer ordered while drinking, you would be drunk before finishing the plate. It was in need. Just before we left, at 6pm-ish, a soulful musical artist came in the door and began an unamplified set walking through the bar area and indoor tables. Speaking of the reserved tables; be careful of the legs when sitting in the booths. You'll quickly figure out why. A good place for locals and some not so locals. The place is so small, it gets extremely loud inside, in a good way. It can get a little drunk and rowdy, too. The atmosphere is definitely not for everyone but, personally, I love it. Do not come here if you're looking for a quiet night out. The side of bacon appetizer is terrific although ours was, sadly, overcooked. You get a few very, very thick pieces of bacon that are extremely flavorful. You have never had bacon like this before. The chicken pot pie comes with a mountain of delicious mashed potatoes on top. It's an enormous dish. The noodle bake is basically an upscale mac and cheese dish and it's probably best ordered as an entree and not as an appetizer. Love this spot and just how wildly different it is. I used to come here with my kids and it was such a relaxing spot where they could run around while the parents could sip on some wine and relax. I recently returned and the place is just as fantastic as I remembered. First, the ambiance feels like you've walked into a honky tonk movie set. There is a winery, an old time bar and plenty of outdoor seating nooks where you can sit as a couple or a group. I visited during the week and the coffee truck was closed, but that's another great option for those who don't want a cocktail or wine. The winery on site sells a wide range of bottles along with California gear, antiques and artwork. Step outside and you'll likely come face to face with peacocks wandering around the grounds. Yes, peacocks! This past visit, I ordered a glass of sauvignon blanc and the halibut entree from the honky tonk bar and grabbed a seat outdoors. The prices are a little steep, but the halibut was spectacular. It truly was delicious and note that any purchase from the bar/honky tonk includes gratuity. It's a bit of a distance from West Hollywood where I live (about 1 hour or more during busy traffic) but feels like a true escape! read more

I didn't know what to expect in coming here as it's a bit of a drive for me, but right off the bat I was introduced to this cool little corner, where classic cars, exotics, bikers and others all meet up to hang out in this inviting area! It makes everything seem to welcoming, the food is absolutely delicious too. I got a steak sandwich, for the price this was probably one of the best steak sandwiches I've ever had. Super tender meat, bread was crispy and not overpowering, I'll say the wedge fries are a little bigger than I expected but safe to say fully tender throughout the center too! The lady was super nice in taking my order up at the window, everyone here has a good vibe and it really adds to making the trip up here worth it. I don't think there's a single bad thing on this menu, others in my group ordered variety and were all massively satisfied in the quality and quantity they gave. Bring your appetite because they don't skimp on the serving. The Old Place is a true hidden gem not to far from Agoura Hills, they have an amazing rib eye that they are know for along with some great appetizers like the Noodle Bake, & thick cut bacon. They have outdoor/to go dining seating, but I'd recommend trying to get a reservation for the limited seating for the indoor experience or come early to try and get an indoor seat at the bar. I came here for a friends birthday dinner around 5pm to grab a spot at the bar. We had only a 30 minute wait so we checked out the outside area and even went next door to Cornell the beer/wine bar. My friend and I like to come here about twice a year, once in the spring before it gets too hot, and once in the fall when it cools down. 3 stars for brunch/outside seating and 5 stars for ambiance, settling on 3.5 stars if I could. Food: I've only ever had the outside menu, I have not dined inside with the full service dining. One time I shared the cinnamon roll and was unimpressed. Did not and will not order again. This last visit I had the steak and eggs. A large portion of potato wedges, two pieces of toast, two eggs scrambled and sirloin steak, which I asked for medium rare, but was overcooked. When you dine outside you order at the window, they give you a buzzer to alert you your food is ready, and then everything is packaged to go in eco friendly packaging with plastic silverware. It can be a challenge to saw through your steak with a plastic knife and you're probably going to saw through the packaging too. Old Truck: there is a small truck for your coffee needs. Small menu and lukewarm coffee for $7. I get it because it's there, not because it's amazing. Ambiance: this is the reason we keep coming back. When you dine outside, you pick up your food and seat yourself at one of the many charming tables arranged all over the property. There are covered tables on the patio, there are lounging chairs out front, there are picnic bench alcoves with plants and artwork. While it can get crowded a bit later on the weekends, but we've never had a problem finding a place to sit. We love to sit out in the fresh air and catch up and watch all the bikers come and go and pass by and listen to the peacocks scream from the trees. You can walk around the property and take a quick look at shopping inside the general store. They've decided the best for their business is to keep the extremely limited menu & serve it in boxes. This is now take out food. The best business move they made for their benefit (or for the benefit of order takers??) Is adding 18% gratuity to each order!! Don't go back for seconds!! Don't go back for another beer cuz you'll get slammed with another 18% The menu is beyond limited...no more great breakfasts big enough for 3 people, no more French toast. And you get to enjoy it in the dirt & potentially 105°F weather. Yay!! Everybody wants to do that....NOT!! So DISAPPOINTING! Used to LOVE this once upon a time hidden gem. However it has completely LOST its magic. We're in the year 2025, and they're still using the covid excuse so they can cut costs and serve via a takeout window only. Long gone are the days of enjoying their charming restaurant, bar, cast iron skillet servings, beautiful presentation, and hospitality. Instead you pay an 18% gratuity upfront to order at a window and pick your food up at a window. We were shocked to pick our food up in a cheap takeout box with plastic and a paper bag. I ordered a steak and eggs and struggled to cut my steak with the flimsy plastic fork. Additionally they've reduced their breakfast/brunch to a whopping four mediocre items to choose from. It's a total tease if you remember the old place. You can see the charming interior through the windows, you just don't get to come inside. We were freezing this morning as we had no idea of the change, It is quite literally, a shell of what it once was. Such a shame. We will never return. Oh and $90.00 for one breakfast, a side of bacon and a Mimosa. (This included a 7% tip as my husband didn't realize they already charged a mandatory 18%). read more

We arrived around 6 PM on a Saturday, excited for the live music and the evening ambiance (we even called ahead to make sure music was happening that night). The gentleman at the front door was fantastic--super friendly and welcoming, definitely the highlight of our visit. Once seated at the bar, things went downhill. Our bartender took our order and then vanished--we didn't see him again until he handed us the bill and that was it. No check-ins, no refills, no follow-up. And despite the promise of live music, none ever started during the 90 minutes we were there. The whole experience felt rushed, almost like we were being nudged out because we didn't order a full meal and only ordered drinks and desert. Open and in business since 1970 and tucked away deep in the Agoura Hills, The Old Place is a truly unique dining experience for Los Angeles and it really feels like you are eating in a different county and time.When you pull up, it looks like a series of old western buildings, but also cozy enough and that you immediately want to check it out. Parking in the area is kind of tricky but if there aren't any spaces available in the parking lot behind the restaurant, it's easy to park in the neighborhood directly next to the restaurant. You will have to walk a block at most. There was a bit of confusion when I booked reservations for dinner. We have been for lunch before where they served steak sandwiches and you have to eat outside, but I wanted to stop in again for indoor dining. I didn't realize when I booked the reservation that you need to be a party of three or more to reserve a table. When I arrived, they told me this, but it was not a problem being that the bar is quite large and many others were eating at it as well. We were a party of two and could comfortably fit and ate our whole meal at the bar. They have a fairly limited menu but a ton of hearty classics that will really fill your belly. They obviously have a very large drink menu as well so whatever you are in the mood for you, you'll be able to find here. For our meal, we started off with one of the specials of the day, which was the Fried Pickles. To our surprise they were whole pickles and breaded just like fish and chips, so it really was a pleasant surprise. For our entrées, we chose the Bone-In Filet Mignon 16 ounce and the Chicken Pot Pie. The filet was cooked perfectly and seasoned well and I truly enjoyed it. There is such a little fat on the filet that you can pretty much eat the entire thing which is my favorite part. The baked potato that they serve with it is gigantic and honestly delicious. It was lacking sour cream, otherwise it was perfect. The Chicken Pot Pie was also a unique take on the classic dish and the puff pastry was crispy and delicious just like I hoped. Overall, this is a really fun place to have lunch or dinner and the drive out is a big part of the charm. It's really nice to get out of the city and The Old Place is a great destination to mix up your dining locations. I would recommend to anyone for any occasion. read more

We fell under the spell of the Old Place many years ago, enjoying great food and music at countless Saturday and Sunday brunches in this lovely, once obscure corner of the canyon. Everything changed with publicity and the pandemic, and after yesterday's visit, doubt we'll be back. Breakfast, lunch and brunch are now outdoor self-service dining only. The menu is the same, but the food isn't and the focus seems to be on quantity over quality. Steak sandwich was tasteless and grilled cheese suffered from a variety of too many low-quality cheeses when one good one would've sufficed. Bill came to almost $80 including a mandatory 18% service tip for no service. We arrived from the beach on what turned out to be a sweltering day inland. Cars and motorcycles packed the property which just looks junky now due to all the rusted corrugated tin and old wood that were added as "quaint" afterthoughts to the original store and post office.
