It was my first time at Mastros and my anticipation was high given the weight of the name. For context, my girlfriend and I were celebrating our Anniversary. Overall, it did not disappoint. Reception: 3/5 Despite making a reservation many days in advance, on arrival we still had to wait almost 15min before our table was ready. Understandably it was a Saturday night and depending on pacing/guest lag time I'm sure it was difficult to manage, however, no one checked in on us or gave us updates while we sat in the front and waited. Ambience: 4/5 The option of being seated amidst the excellent live entertainment or a more quiet section for intimate conversation was a nice touch. The seating is comfortable and in good condition, but some of our drinking glasses were smudged and not properly cleaned. We loved how our printed menu said "Happy Anniversary!". Service: 4.8/5 Our server was attentive, considerate, quick, and on top of refilling our water and champagne. Appetizers: 3/5 The Oysters Rockefeller was just not good and truly felt like biting into a mouthful of salt. At least the oysters were cleaned well and the presentation was decent. However, the A5 Wagyu beef Carpaccio was excellent! Perfect ratio of meet to cheese/arugula, and bread. Entree: 5/5 We chose the Australian Wagyu 40oz Tomahawk chop. This was absolutely the best steak I've had so far. Cooked to perfection and perfectly salted/seasoned. Sides: 5/5 The French-fried Potatoes were a huge portion (bigger sides are always better with us). The crisp was on point. The perfect fry. The Wild Mushroom & Black Truffle Gnocchi perfectly struck the delicate balance between textures without being too creamy. The strong flavor of the Truffle was not overpowering, and the Gnocchi was incredible. Dessert: 5/5 Their Butter Cake with vanilla ice cream was the best way to end the night. I'm writing this review because I was very disappointed with my experience at Mastro's in Thousand Oaks. About a month ago, I went there with 3 other. The only food we had was steak. When we got home, I became very sick and vomited, while my girlfriend experienced significant stomach pain and the other person also felt nauseous. The following day, I contacted the manager and explained exactly what had happened. I wasn't looking for a refund, compensation, or anything like that. I simply wanted to make them aware of the situation and asked that they look into it to see what might have happened. The manager apologized and told me they would investigate and call me back the next day. Unfortunately, nobody ever followed up. I never received a call, an update, or even a follow-up apology. I understand that sometimes people can get sick for different reasons, and I'm not claiming to know exactly what caused our symptoms. What disappointed me most was the lack of follow-up after I took the time to contact the restaurant and report what happened. For a restaurant of this caliber, I expected better communication and customer service. I hope management takes situations like this seriously and follows up with customers when they report a concerning experience. read more

Celebrating a big milestone and wanted someplace special. Mastro's seemed to fit the bill. We wanted a quiet table - the main room, which includes the bar area, was pretty loud. No problem. We were shown a smaller room off to the side which we ended up having to ourselves for the evening (see photo). Nice! Shortly after we were seated, Eric came by to answer questions and get our beverage order. Service was outstanding the entire evening. We decided to start with the bread basket ($6). I often resent when a restaurant charges for bread service and it includes 4 slices of sliced sourdough. Not here. The bread basket was a beautiful presentation of 4 different breads (pretzel bread roll, onion roll, and two others). The bread was warm and fresh. The price was a bargain! Next, we shared the Mastro's salad ($25). A huge portion of iceberg lettuce, sliced onion, lots of tomato, topped with a shrimp. Really good! My wife ordered the sashimi style albacore with truffles ($31). Beautiful presentation and the hit of the night in terms of taste! I ordered the 22 oz bone in ribeye ($91). Cooked to perfection but way more than I could eat in one sitting. Because we were celebrating our anniversary, they brought us a complimentary butter cake topped with ice cream and a HUGE side of whipped cream. OUTSTANDING!!! Is it pricy? Yes! Is it worth it? The first time I thought the food sucked, but since I love Mastros so much - figured maybe it was an off night. However after tonight I'll never come back. I got violently ill after dining here. We came here for a friend's birthday, and the service was easily the best part of the night. Everyone was genuinely friendly and made us feel taken care of from the second we walked in. We brought two bottles of wine, and one of them needed a pretty aggressive decant. They brought out a decanter and had it opened right away as we sat down, which was a really nice touch. They also did a great job making the birthday feel special without making a big production out of it. The food was good, but it didn't completely wow me for the price. The best way I can describe it is that it still feels like a chain steakhouse. There's nothing wrong with that at all, and everything we had was cooked well, but I was missing that extra level of creativity or attention to detail that I'd expect at this price point. The atmosphere was pretty much what you'd expect from a nice steakhouse. Nothing that really stood out, but it was comfortable, had a good vibe, and was a great place to celebrate. This place is quality and feels like home every time we go. For a high end steakhouse it just feels special, which is why it's our go-to for family dinners. We always sit at our usual high-top in the bar area and have to say, everything was incredible. The steak was top notch, the creamed corn and mashed potatoes are a must, and do not skip the butter cake. The cocktails were great too. The live music is always on point, with a great pianist playing amazing renditions, and we even got to catch the Rams game while we were there. The service is always incredible. Wonderful meal, as expected. It's a very pretty location. Note it's valet parking only, although you can park across the street and brave the busy road if you wish. The dining room is the usual Mastro's - dark (a little too dark I would suggest) and classy. One thing I don't love... they do really jam you in there on the banquette booth things... you will have neighbors and they will be very close. I could do without this. The bread service is definitely pushed. They ask you if you want to order it as soon as you're seated. We sucumbed, but for two people, it's too much bread. Be better than we were and pass on this. The drinks are lovely - they even have a good mocktail list if you must. Service is extremely polished, natch. I had the crabcakes with a side of lobster mashed potatoes. Delicious and entirely too much food. My friend had the French onion soup (she loved it) and the scallops. Beautiful and also delicious. Sorry to say that after not being here for 5 years I am gravely disappointed. Came here to celebrate me getting a new job & date night. The server was amazing and great, and so were the drinks (Spicy Margarita & Mastro's Margarita). But the dinner! Ugh! The Brussels sprouts were burnt to a crisp (I wish there was sound for my picture so you could hear it) and sounded like charred crumbled paper as they scooped them up and placed them on our plate - should have been the SECOND sign that they should not be served, and the FIRST is how the heck did the sous chef plate these and think they were edible?!? we were shocked! They tasted like the back char you scrap off a bbq grill that was used Fourth of July weekend. My halibut was way over cooked and so dry I couldn't even finish it. My man's ribeye was not cooked to order and extremely fatty. Needless to say we tried to make the most of our night but this was by far the worst experience I've had here. read more

I had a wonderful time celebrating my birthday dinner here with my wife, daughter, mother and mother in law. I made reservations off OpenTable which was easy. We chose the valet parking because we had our baby daughter with us and it wasn't too much. We arrived early and got seated quick so it wasn't an issue. Our server was Raymond and he was amazing with the customer service. There no complimentary bread here so just be aware and no free refills on the soda. The men's bathroom also have a baby changing station which is important to me now since I'm a new dad. I got the 12oz bone in filet at medium rare since Raymond said it will have more flavor. My wife and mom got the Chilean Sea Bass. My wife mom got the Norwegian Cold Water Salmon. Raymond said the steak plate will be hot since the steak will be cooked at 400 degree so it will continue to cook on the plate. We loved all our dish, my filet steak was amazing and flavorful like Raymond said. Our sides were the fries, Mac and cheese, sauteed asparagus and rosemary garlic wild mushrooms. I had previously been to the Thousand Oaks location of Mastro's Steakhouse for a work function and really enjoyed it, so for Mother's Day I suggested my daughters and I go there for dinner. We had a 7:45 reservation and waited about 15 minutes, which honestly wasn't a huge issue considering it was Mother's Day and we booked last minute. We sat in the bar area, which was semi-dark and a little loud, but still had a nice atmosphere overall. Our waitress, Britney, was very friendly and welcoming. We ordered drinks, bread came out quickly, and we placed our dinner order. When the food arrived, the plates were extremely hot as usual, so we waited a moment before touching them while our sides were still being served. As Britney was serving the asparagus, mashed potatoes, and mac and cheese, one of my daughters noticed a hair on her plate. Britney immediately stopped and asked what was wrong. My daughter explained, and Britney asked if she wanted a clean plate or an entirely new meal made. My daughter seemed uncomfortable and just asked for a clean plate. Britney took the plate back to show the kitchen and returned with the steak, but without the asparagus that had originally been on the plate. I didn't say anything at the time, but what disappointed me was that she later served the remaining asparagus pieces that had been left over from the original serving dish. We still tried to enjoy the rest of our evening, and overall the service was pleasant, but I was honestly surprised nothing was replaced or comped considering the situation. Although a franchise, Mastro's is probably one of my favorite steakhouses. I love their sushi selections, especially the hamachi with crispy onions and lobster roll. I have always been a huge fan of Mastro's, which is why this experience was so disappointing. Unfortunately, this was the worst meal I've ever had here, and it has made me question whether I'll return. I ordered the American Wagyu filet, and it arrived cold. Even worse, it was mostly fat and nearly impossible to eat. For a premium steak at this price point, I expected exceptional quality, but this was far from it. The Brussels sprouts were undercooked, and our Wagyu sushi appetizer took over 40 minutes to arrive. While our server was friendly and courteous, the overall service was incredibly slow--especially considering we arrived at 5:00 p.m. and the restaurant was nearly empty. We were the only table in the dining room for much of our meal. What really ruined the evening was that when another couple arrived, they were seated immediately next to us despite there being well over 20 empty tables throughout the dining room. They were loud, making it difficult to even hear the person I was with. It completely changed the atmosphere and took away from what should have been a relaxing dinner. With an entire dining room available, this seating decision made no sense. Mastro's has always been one of my favorite steakhouses, which is why this experience was so disappointing. The 4 of us had reservations, at this very busy upscale restaurant. We were seated, quickly, in the big wine room. So noisy I couldn't hear anyone. I think one of their smaller rooms may have been better. The service was excellent, when I read the waitresses lips. Water glasses were refilled regularly and the men got their 2 glasses of wine in just the right order. It took a little while for the food, but appetizers (humachi and raw beef sushi style roll) came quickly. I had the petite (6oz) filet, our friend had the 8oz filet. My medium rare was perfect, but our friend ordered well done (ugh) and it was too pink for him. The waiter was gracious and took it back. Very shortly he received it well done and enjoyed it. The manager came by to ensure he was happy with his steak. My husband ordered grilled salmon and our friend's daughter order the mushroom gnocchi. My husband loved the salmon, but our friend's adult daughter didn't like the topping on the gnocchi. She did not tell the waiter/waitress. The table shared green beans with almond slivers and they were prepared and served perfectly. I also ordered a baked potato. It was a full pound. It came with all of the fixings, on the side, but wasn't quite warm enough. Almost room temperature. I still ate almost half of it. I didn't take any photos, as it is an upscale restaurant and was too embarrassed. I only gave it 4 stars because of the horrible noise level. If I ever go back to this location (I've enjoyed their Malibu and Beverly Hills location in past years) I will be certain not to sit in the big wine room. read more

This past Saturday I went to Mastro's for a birthday dinner with a group of 13. It was a busy night, but our server was very attentive, friendly, and handled our large table well. Our drinks did take a while to come out, but he apologized and let us know the bar was backed up, which we appreciated. Unfortunately, there were multiple mix-ups with our orders throughout the night. My fiancé and I ordered a porterhouse steak, but it was accidentally given to other guests in our party, and we were served their tomahawk steak instead. In all honesty, we didn't realize the mistake at first because we've never ordered a porterhouse before and weren't familiar with how it was supposed to look. By the time it was noticed, both steaks were already halfway eaten. On top of that, they also gave one guest's steak to another guest and had to come back to move plates around to the correct person. Another guest ordered fish but was served a steak instead, and the plates had to be switched again. It felt a bit chaotic and confusing, especially for a restaurant of this caliber. There were also issues with our appetizers. We ordered two hamachi crudos and one tuna tartare, but only two appetizers were brought out instead of three. We had to ask for the second hamachi crudo, and in the end, they took the tuna tartare away altogether. We spoke with our server, who was apologetic and attentive and immediately acknowledged the mistakes. He said he would see what could be done and went to speak with his manager. Our guests were informed they would be getting a new tomahawk steak, but nothing was communicated to us regarding our steak, which was very unfortunate. After that, the manager kept glancing over at our table but never approached us again to follow up, which felt awkward. Aside from the service issues, the ambiance was great and the music was good, which made the atmosphere enjoyable overall. Wow! First of all let me start with how incredible the service is here! From valet to seating, to our server and the helpers-all so professional and friendly. Eric was our waiter and he was so nice, gave great suggestions, very knowledgeable and attentive throughout our meal. Our drinks were amazing! My husband loved his Manhattan and my lemon drop martini was so yummy and entertaining haha! They put dry ice at the bottom of the glass so it boiled with bubbles until the drink was gone! Unfortunately, they don't put very much alcohol in this drink. I couldn't taste the vodka and...Normally when I drink lemon drops, I feel a little tipsy. Did not feel the effects of this drink at all. Still so yummy! We ordered the bread (they charge $5-worth it) and Dungeness crab cocktail and oysters and oh my! Absolutely delish!! We could've just ate this for dinner! We shared Caesar salad, also wonderful! We actually wished we would've stuck with the appetizers because the main course was truly a disappointment. My 6oz petite filet mignon was tough! Literally struggled to cut it and chewing was difficult. I had to send it back. Our waiter was very nice about it and the replacement was perfect! Tender like butter! As it should be! Why wasn't that served to me in the first place? My husband ordered the Australian Wagyu Tomahawk steak chop what a disappointment! Perfectly cooked yet it was a bit tough and very salty and we are pretty sure it was the special $16 butter he opted for on top of his steak. For a $195 piece of meat? And Australian Wagyu? It should not have been the slightest bit tough. He did not send it back but mentioned it to our server who surprisingly didn't suggest a replacement. Also, we ordered a side to share-The lobster mashed potatoes and that was so disappointing! EXTREMELY SALTY! We ate a few bites, hoping it would get better but unfortunately it was just awful! There were some little chunks of lobster mixed in and a lot of claw meat on top-The claw meat was so tough I had to spit it into my napkin. The claw meat was also very fishy and extremely salty. Again our server was very kind about it and took it away without charge. This was our first time dining here and honestly? I don't think we're coming back. We've had much better experiences at numerous other high end steak houses who offer similar menu items with similar pricing. This was a very expensive dinner that did not offer an excellent dining experience. If you are looking for a place to celebrate , then Mastro's is always a good place to celebrate! As for food, you get what you would expect for a steakhouse restaurant. And the ambiance is typical of steakhouses! To start out, let's talk about ambiance. This is not the kind of restaurant you go for a quiet romantic dinner. The ambiance is graced with dimly lit lights, but that's where that romantic vibe stops. Like most steakhouses, the dining area is riddled with tables that are close by each other. My chair was hit several times between the staff and the guest behind me- that's how close the tables are. Also you will have large parties of guest mixed within tables for two. The night that we visited there was a double birthday celebration for young kids who were banging on glassware with knifes and talking loudly. Plus you can hear all the conversations of guest tables around you. If you do seek a private space, the restaurant does have private rooms. For seating, the bar has plenty of high top tables. Tables are closest to the live music when offered. Plus there are to dinning spaces with low top tables for small and large parties. The restaurant also features private dinning spaces. As for service- it was ok. When you are paying significant money, you expect service to be more than ok. Simple gestures were missed, for example after delivering food to one's table, you should check to see if food was prepared properly. A check should not be provided until you request it- as one may want more. And when check is provided, you should say thank you for dining with us. Very simple gestures go a long way- plus we had several waiters throughout our meal rather than one that made sure our experience was well received. On the plus side, the host at the front desk was lovely! For food, as you would expect for Mastro's was mostly on par. We started out with the cocktail shrimp- the shrimp were good but you only get four shrimps for 30 dollars. For dinner we had the tuna and filet. The tuna was amazing- perfectly cooked and properly prepared. The filet was cooked properly as well. For sides, we ordered the scallop potatoes and asparagus. The scallop potatoes were really good and rich. The asparagus was just ok, they should of been cut a bit further up on the stalk. And to celebrate they provided us a lovely dessert and fresh whip cream! A nice touch! As for drinks- My lemon drop martini was a miss- I asked for it tart and was overly sweet and not tart- this seems like a staple drink for a steak house! The second time they made it, it was slightly better but still off. For 20 dollars or so the drink should be spot on! Especially a classic drink! With that said, the presentation of the drink was amazing- nice sugar rim with a bubbly affect! Bonus: as a bonus the night we visited, Friday night, there was live music- in the piano bar there was a pianist. Not sure of the schedule for live music. As for parking- you can valet for a nominal amount. Or you can park on the street. With the theater across the street is not in session, there is tons of street parking. Lastly, there is a dress code- but it does not seem like it is followed well- people were coming in track pants- but perhaps that is the new business causal these days. I ordered the NY strip cooked medium well, caesar salad and a baked potato. Husband ordered the filet ( MW) with broccolini and a wedge salad. All of the sides were good as well as the wedge salad. Caesar dressing tasted sour and my steak was cooked properly only at the ends. The majority of the steak was bloody and the béarnaise sauce was cold . My husband's steak was cooked as ordered. The most disappointing part of our night out was the service. The server seemed more suited to work in a doctor's office than a restaurant. We arrived a couple of minutes early, for our reservation. Valet service was friendly and fast. Once inside we checked in and were seated fairly quickly. There was a larger party ahead of us so they were seated and we were immediately seated. Our server was personable and friendly. Bread basket arrived and water was poured. They have a large cocktail menu and wine list. We started with the caviar and calamari. The caviar was served with toast squares and these little pancakes. 2 of us liked the pancake better and the other 2 were team toast. Small diced egg, red onion, maybe parsley and a crème fresh were served on the side. The caviar was really good. The calamari was cooked perfectly, had a nice crunch and the sweet sour sauce paired nicely. Entrees arrived, I ordered the dry aged bone in ribeye. The meat was cooked perfectly. The rest of the family had filet mignon in varying sizes and doneness. Everyone was happy with their choice. My son added the bone marrow butter to his steak. He made the right choice, it added a whole other layer of flavor to the steak. Our side were tallow fries and Brussel sprouts. The fries were crunchy and salted properly. The Brussel sprouts were charred to perfection. We finished up our meal with a butter cake. The cake was good and a perfect ending to a great meal. We head out to valet to retrieve our car. It's been a few years so I just wanted to come back to give an updated review for one of my favorite restaurants, Mastros. Mastros continues to be an absolute home run. The vibes are sophisticated and romantic, while fun and lively, especially if you sit at the bar. From start to finish it's a well thought out experience and meal. I always make a reservation in advance and it's seamless. The valet makes pulling up and getting out easy peasy. With a reservation we only waited a couple of minutes and then were seated. This time we sat at the bar high top for a more lively vibe. If you want something a little quieter and more romantic then opt for a dining area table. The bar was perfect for a girls night as the piano was playing and it was dimly lit. Our server this time was Lana and she was such a doll. Super sweet and caring throughout our meal. She was attentive and gave great recommendations. The service is always top notch, drinks were always refilled and our table cleaned off almost immediately from being finished. The staff do a wonderful job here, it's definitely a team effort. Cocktails are amazing here. Always ice cold and presentation is elegant. I love that the martinis come with a shaker, so you essentially are getting a double. The cocktails are unique but they also do the classics right. Food is worth the hype! The oyster are always fresh and I love their shrimp cocktail. For mains it's easily any of their steaks for me. I personally love their ribeye. Always cooked perfect. For the sides I beg anyone who will listen to get the lobster mashed potatoes because they are so creamy and buttery with huge chunks of lobster. We've been to Mastro's a few times this year. My takeaways: they tend to overcook their fish and undercook their steaks. Medium means medium-rare etc. Service is excellent. And you can spend three hours having dinner and they don't mind. Finally the butter cake is to die for. It's big, so get one to share. read more

We celebrated our 2-year anniversary at Mastro's Steakhouse on Sunday night, and the experience exceeded our expectations, especially because of our waiter, Chris. We had a 9:00 PM reservation, right at closing time, and I honestly wasn't sure what to expect walking in that late. The dining room had mostly cleared out, but you would never have known it from the level of service we received. Chris was incredibly professional, attentive, and genuinely caring from start to finish. Not once did we feel rushed. Instead, he made the evening feel relaxed, and special. Exactly what you hope for when celebrating something meaningful. He guided us through the wine selection perfectly. The bottle he recommended paired beautifully with our steaks and elevated the entire meal. Throughout the night, Chris checked in thoughtfully, made sure every detail was right, and truly treated our anniversary like it mattered. Even though we were one of the last tables in the restaurant, he maintained the same high standard of service you'd expect during peak hours. The food was outstanding, the wine was exceptional, but the service is what made the night unforgettable. When it is Christmas Eve and the place is sold out (including added tables in the bar) and the team knocks it out of the park? That's amazing. Cocktails- all served timely and concoctions were all right on the mark. Shrimp Cocktail- cold, perfectly cooked served over cocktail sauce and dry ice/ note- WATCH the horseradish. THE hottest I've ever had. I loved it. Salads- I ordered a wedge, chopped and tossed, and it was delicious. The bacon was savory with just the right amount of blue cheese and dressing. Everyone's salads were devoured. Entrées and sides - 2 NY Strip, two filets, one panko crusted sea bass (that was my wife's and she loved it) and one chicken dish. Again- all served hot and cooked to order. Mashed potatoes were silky, white cheddar Mac n Cheese was perfectly cooked and delicious as was the au gratin (OK we "carb loaded"...guilty pleasure on Christmas Eve ) We had a birthday in the group so Brittanie brought out a small butter cake. Went for our 31st wedding anniversary, so kind of a special occasion. We were seated at the time of our reservation & warmly greeted by Debbie, our server, who immediately made my wife & I feel welcome. Our menus were captioned with "Happy 31st Anniversary" at the top, which was a nice touch. Debbie took her time to explain the various items & suggested serving order. We have dined here previously but we view the restaurant as more of a "fine dining" spot than our more regular eateries, but Debbie's demeanor certainly made us feel as if we were "regulars." We had a lovely experience with drinks, salad, appetizers, main entree, after-dinner drinks and their famous butter cake for desert. The food was prepared to order, service was prompt & efficient. The entertainment was also exceptional- a piano player singing renditions of classic & popular music with her own twist; so good it almost sounded like a recording! Over all, a very satisfying experience and because we felt so welcomed we will be back for more repeat dining experiences! I don't get it. I resisted going because I understod it was so expensive, but my wife chose it for mother's day brunch. What a disappointment. The food was OK, but not for the price. The selection was quite limited. Our waiter was first class, but the one man entertainment was more like a Denny's. The dress code was clearly stated as upscale, so I wore a suit and my entire family wore suits and dresses. However, many customers were in shorts and some in T-shirts. I was insulted. My friend and I gave this place three chances, THREE! Every time we walked out disappointed. We give this place two stars because we can not complain about the service. The oysters the first two times were DRY and shucked poorly. The third time they had no selecting of oysters. They weren't horrible the third time, thankfully, they were just average. The mac & cheese lobster & the lobster bisque is complete ass extremely bland and watery. I am almost certain they put the lobster bisque into the mac & cheese and call it lobster mac & cheese only cheese at the top and water soggy noodles at the bottom with old lobster MY FAVORITE We asked if they could take back the mac & cheese and if we can swap it for the lobster mashed potatoes. This place was the best for decades. That is past tense. Last 3 visits my entire party left with some level of disappointment... improperly cooked steaks are among the top complaint. You just would not think that they would screw up the cooking temperatures so badly. This past week my medium NY came out so blue, I decided to bite my tongue and take it home for lunch the following day after a few minutes in chef Mic. My wife had the same issue, and the same lunch the following day. Sad but true!! Service is always very good. But that alone does not justify me wanting to spend $200 per person.
