What a dining weekend for me... Friday night here... Saturday night, Scratch Bar & Kitchen... Monday, water and gym! Special shout outs to Kasey for happily answering all my emails and being a great server, Erika for getting us in, and Christie, the truly great manager. You all made us feel so at home and welcome for our first visit! This place is a hidden gem. Yes, I know that sounds like a cliche, but it is too perfect a description. If you want to feel like you are deep in the mountains and far away from LA, this is the place to come to and the atmosphere you'll get. But the locals here won't warn you to stay off the Moors. The Old Place has a cozy and comfy, country feel. Fantastic! We were at the 8:30 seating, so we missed the Cornell Winery next door which closes at 7. Oh well, we'll just have to come back. I did not love the table in the back, but since we were pulled off the waitlist, I cannot complain. Will try for a booth on the next visit... and sitting at the bar seemed fun, as well. Yes, I will be back, whether it's just for a drink at the bar, or another fantastic dinner, or for what I hear is a killer brunch. They have a small but good beer list with some nice local selections... and the warm bread that comes out to start is way too good and too hard to resist. My buddy and I split the Bone In Rib Eye, which was enough for two to share, and perfectly cooked. I love the crust that gave way to a perfect pink center and so much flavor. The baked potato was huge and came with all the fixings. For an extra $10 you can get two extra sides, but the salad and grilled veggies were a little on the small side... but with that huge piece of meat, I am not sure there would have been room for more. Would definitely like a bigger portion, so on a separate plate, perhaps. Our other friend got the Osso Bucco special, which was quite good, too. Slightly overcooked, but really great flavors. For dessert we split the Cast Iron Apple Crisp with hand-whipped cream. Stellar. This place has so much history, as an old post office and a restaurant for 40 plus years. Cannot believe it took me so long to get here, but I will overlook any regret, live in the present and say it was well worth the wait... and hopefully come back soon! read more

This is the one of the hidden gems of LA. Part biker stop, part "only the native Angelinos know it," and all delicious food with incredible portion size. If you're going for brunch, get there before the cinnamon rolls run out. Local vibes aplenty. Service is at the window on Sunday with outdoor seating among the trees and buildings but otherwise there's some indoor booths and covered patio tables. Tip your guitarist! read more

I absolutely LOVE the Old Place Restaurant. I loved it more than I thought I would. We had planned a trip to the Malibu Wine Safari and there are just a handful of good options including more instagram worthy locations with all the frills. This place has no frills. In my opinion, this place is just as instagram worthy, just without the avocado toast and mimosas. In fact, they service up a healthy slab of thick cut bacon in that your BLT or a heavy dose of cream in your casserole bake. Want pancakes? Forget stick to your ribs, this is stick to your ribs and forever in your heart pancakes. Made with what appears to be blue corn meal and sure to be filling. Their cinnamon roll is to die for and served in a cast iron skillet. Beautifully decorated and oh so filling for your tummy and your soul. The ambiance is a classic warm, inviting, intimate and cozy. There was a gentleman playing the guitar beautifully. There's even a separate seating area that was very charming in the far back of the restaurant. We have set the dial to the 1800s in the town of Cornell CA. The Old Place Restaurant is an adventurous journey into the past to an old western town during the Stagecoach Days. What a Cool Place. The Parking here is FREE! It is only an hour or so outside of LA but feels like you are a thousand miles away. It all began with Tom Runyon of the famous Runyon Canyon. It all started when Tom took a train ride out West to join the Runyon Clan who had made the trek from New York. The buildings the Runyons purchased were formerly a post office & a general store from the 1800s. They were called Hank's Country Store & The Cornell Post Office. They were shuttered for some years & in the 1960s they began the gradual process of renovation. In 1970 The Old Place Restaurant made its debut. The Old Place attracted a wide variety of different types of people who were looking for a unique dining experience. It has attracted customers from Movie Stars to the Rich & Famous in Malibu to old Californian families from surrounding areas. Recently The Old Place was very lucky & they narrowly escaped the Wolsey fire. In 2020 they celebrated their 50th Anniversary. Their Specialty are their steaks that are grilled on an open fire with smoked woods. I ordered The Sirloin & it comes with a Baked potato & home made sour cream & chives. The potato was HUGE. The Sirloin was just OK. The Salad was GOOD! I am not really a meat & potato guy I really should have ordered the chicken or a vegetarian dish Well next time. 3 STARS for the Food & an extra Star for this Really Cool One of a Kind Place. I'll definitely be back & order a different item on the menu. They also sell T Shirts etc & have a Merch shop online. After you are done go next door to the Cornell Winery which is Fantastic & the highlight of my trip out here to relax & de-stress. There is currently no indoor dining because of Covid just outdoors. They have booths & tables & chairs on all sides of the restaurant. In addition there are hidden little quirky spots all over the property to dine as well that you wouldn't expect. Be sure to check those out as well. You have to walk around the whole property & check out the place to really get that Stagecoach Vibe. Don't be surprised when you see a beautiful peacock wandering loose all around the property. Morgan Runyon probably said it best about The Old Place - "Time is a bit wound backwards here". This review is specific to the outside dining experience, inside is different. First of all, the food is outstanding, I had the bone-in Filet, which was flavorful and so tender I could easily cut it with the plastic knife they give you. We also had clams, a caeser salad, one beer, and one "Manmosa," which is just a big mimosa. The portions are large, and the food all tasted great, but our bill was $184 for two of us (mandatory 18% gratuity included), which is very pricey IMO, especially given everything else that goes along with the outdoor dining experience (or lack thereof). What I mean by that is, you order from a window on the side of the building and they give you a number and your drinks (just like your neighborhood burger place). If you want water they give you a cup of ice and point you to a drinking fountain. We ended up waiting an hour for our food, which they give you in paper bags full of to-go containers, along with the plastic cutlery I mentioned earlier. You can then take the food to go or sit at one of their outdoor tables. When you're done, you discard your trash and then you're on your way. This is all fine and dandy, except for one thing. They charge you a mandatory 18% service charge for literally zero service. So we paid about $30 in gratuity to walk up to a window, order our own food, get our own water, wait an hour, pick up our food from the window, seat ourselves, and clean up after ourselves. What about that rates an 18% service charge??? (This is a rhetorical question, please don't respond and tell me about the kitchen staff or some BS like that.) read more

Old Place Restaurant is a charming eatery when you can't get into Malibu Cafe without a reservation. My friends and I ubered here after leaving Malibu Wine Safaris on Saturday 10/05/2019. I think we arrived right before the big lunch rush because we only stood around waiting for 5 minutes before three seats at the bar opened up for us. The staff is incredibly kind and helpful. We were given glasses of water and we each ordered a "manmosa" which is a pint glass FILLED with champagne and a splash of orange juice haha. Bring your appetite because the portion sizes are large enough for two. Maybe consider splitting a plate with someone in your party. They can make some good scrambled eggs, breakfast potatoes, and giant bacon strips. My friend ordered bacon and it definitely was a sight to see! read more

We went there for lunch (eating outdoors) and had the Oak-Grilled Steak Sandwich with Wedge potatoes, which was very good. What left a bad taste in my mouth was a mandatory 18% tip, bringing the total cost to $ 27.14 on a $23.00 sandwich. If that was not bad enough they had NO servers, so who is getting the Tip? If you need the money that bad make the price = what we are going to pay and drop the junk fees! read more

I've never been here before and thought that all of the amazing photos and pictures looked fantastic! I really wanted to try it! The time we went was when things were starting to open back up finally after covid lockdown. The 3-stars have nothing to do with the food. From the art gallery to the grocer section and to the food we ordered was all amazing! Super cool aesthetic, neat lighting and decor, and the free-roaming peacocks are an amazing sight to behold. So I find it unfortunate that I can't give 5 stars. I knock 2 stars off because of the customer service and it took a long while for us to receive our food. (though I try to be really understanding about this if they're really busy, which they were) We ordered 3 entrees and so they rang us up. They doubled up one of the entrees, a steak sandwich, so had charged us for 4 entrees in error. We paid when they rang us up and even at the counter, I thought, "That's quite a lot... but I didn't want to question it and hold up the line as it was very long. I just chalked it up to thinking... I guess this place was more expensive than I thought." When they gave us our food, it was then obvious why it was more money than I thought it would be. We got 4 entrees instead of 3. We took the 4th entree back to them untouched and told them what had happened. They seriously acted like we were lying. They didn't say anything "mean..." really but the look and body language were very telling. Sorry??? It was your mistake and in a small way, ours as well because we didn't want to question the price you gave us but we didn't know you had charged us 4 instead of 3 entrees when we paid and just wanted a refund. It feels like a simple misunderstanding so why treat us like that? I know that the food will sadly go to waste but it was untouched. It's not like we took several bites out of it or something. I felt the same kind of coldness when I was at the gallery section and tried to ask some questions about the paintings/art that was there while I was purchasing some goods they had. Short and curt replies but everyone else they waited on got smiles. (I had gone to the gallery section while we waited on our food to be brought out to pass the time) Overall, my experience felt very disconcerting. We both felt unwelcomed and unwanted here... Despite this, I believe that I do want to try this place again still. Maybe it was just a bad day, with COVID and all... :( I'd like to give it a 2nd chance. read more

We got to there ten minutes after breakfast was served, which was a bummer, but the sandwiches were pretty good. We shared the mushroom and pulled chicken sandwiches, and they came with a good amount of potato wedges. I liked the spice level on them, but would prefer them a little smaller and crisper. The person at the takeout window was super friendly. We sat in the Adirondack chairs with a lovely view of the mountain. There was a person playing songs on their guitar. This restaurant is THE BEST! We got there when it opened at 4pm and we sat at the bar to eat because the booths were reserved at least a month ahead of time. The ambience was old time country. It was also mentioned in the Harry Bosch detective novels! We started out with fresh and warm sourdough bread . We then had the Organic Half Chicken with Loaded Baked Potato and salad. Also had the 18oz Ribeye with loaded baked potato and salad. And had the Chicken Pot Pie! Finished the meal with the fresh baked chocolate chip cookie and homemade whipped cream. Ok, overall, this was one of the best meals we have ever had! Sooo good and the portions were very large. Yes, the price point was fairly high ($200 including tip and no alcohol) but it was well worth it!! And, as a side note, as we were walking out, there was a peacock walking into the restaurant!... Love this place. Been coming here for over 10 years. This is a true cowboy steakhouse found in the middle of Kanan Canyon. As soon as you arrive, it feels like you are in the wild wild west. Bone-In Ribeye is delicious. Perfectly charred over open wood fire grill and portions are enormous. The Steamed Clams are a must as well. Everything is sourced locally and on a good day, you can find epic meats such as elk and venison. Highly recommend checking this place out. read more

Sadly something that was once special and very near and dear to my heart seems to be upended and spoiled post COVID. For many years I've held fond memories of the Old Place. I've taken many friends and loved ones to enjoy a fun lively space, filled with nostalgia, a rich history and earthy comfort food with the buckwheat pancakes being a fan favorite. Since moving out of LA, I was excited to return to the Old Place on a recent trip to visit family and share this special place with my husband who's favorite breakfast is pancakes but the old time memories are gone like dust in the wind. No more was there a rustic bench to rest on inside and share a meal. Now they simply have a walk up window with only one person running it to take orders so be ready to stand around and wait. The menu too has been stripped down with little to offer but be prepared to hurry up and wait some more. All through out the property you'll find nooks with tables and make shift walls which clearly were a brilliant idea when quarantine forced closures. However in the wake of 2023 and on the other side of an astounding rainy season all appears weathered and run down. But the most disappointing thing was honestly that everything was beyond salty to the point it was honestly inedible. The eggs were bland, cold and gritty while the toast was overdone. Then there was the abomination that the menu calls bacon which I would argue is more of a hunk of pork belly. My husband who loves thick cut bacon couldn't even stomach it and worse yet it the steep price breaching almost $20 to throw quite literally in the trash. read more

I love this place. Very small town feel, like you're in the old west. Parking lot on a dusty road. Don't worry about dressing too fancy. Make reservations if you want a table. If you have to wait, just go next door to Cornell for some wine tasting. Our first tine here, which was years ago, we had the best bone marrow. But that was one of their specials so they don't always have it. This past weekend we went here and sat at the bar. Brunch is from 9am-2pm in weekends with lunch from 11am-4pm. Dinner starts at 5pm. The service was attentive and best you can ask for. They have some beer on tap and some typical drink choices, and you can bring your own wine. We ordered creamed corn, mushroom skillet, Noodle bake, and baked potato for starters, and had a pot pie and beef stew as the entree. Of course it was so much food that we boxed over half of it to go. But not complaining because there's a lot of food and it's good comfort food. I love the ambiance and atmosphere. I feel like we're in another place and time in history. The Old Place has a special old place in my heart. I always look forward to returning. Next time it will be for brunch! read more

The Old Place in Cornell has the BEST AMBIANCE Outdoors. Million dollar views of the Santa Monica Mountains. That is the ONLY positive thing I can share about my dining experience last night‼ After working really hard for a full week being of service to others, I was craving a healthy, grounding meal, and looking forward to being served. My friend and I sat outside to take in the view. Firstly, for a dried out hal- a- chicken with a baked potato and a salad that was just lettuce... We paid $46! I will say it again.. $46! Of course I included our tip, which was a waste of money totally! All of our food (at the high price), was served in plastic! And we had to eat our food with plastic cutlery! On top of it all... they did not give us enough condiments whatsoever! I had to get up and go to the 'to go' window where I picked up my meal... FOUR times before I could sit down and finally eat the meal. Hey! If you are cool with eating To Go dried out Chicken with plastic, and hey.. if your wallet is overflowing with $100 bills.. you might have a different experience. Me?? NEVER GOING BACK. read more

This was an absolute gem to visit! We got the tip to visit this place from our AirBnB host out in Malibu. We went on around 4pm on a Thursday, so when we arrived, there was really no one around. It was perfect. Lots of tables available, and each little table has its own view and character of the space. It was like a tiny western town in the middle of the Santa Monica mountains. Parking looked a bit limited. We ended up parking on the street. We got the half chicken and the primerib, the bread, the cookie, and MANmosas (which apparently are half a bottle of champagne with a dash of juice). The food was **chef's kiss**. Due to COVID-19, they prepare your food "take-out only," but really its like a picnic style. Get your brown bag of to-go food, then find a place to sit and enjoy. Be ready to fight off lots of annoying flies though, because they know your food is good too! Staff were super kind. Also, nice sightings of peacocks while you dine. Overall, great little spot that we will definitely be returning to. read more

It's a little hard to find -- you have to use a one way bridge to enter. I was lucky enough to find a parking spot right in front but otherwise seems that most people were doing street parking. The place is massive. Definitely an interesting aesthetic -- kind of western / cowboy / old barn. All the seating at this point in COVID was outside. Unfortunately we went a bit after noon aka the hottest time of day in the wonderful desert aridity of Thousand Oaks. So, this may have dampened our food experience a bit because it was just so dayum hot. The place was full and popping even at lunchtime so clearly this place is an establishment of tradition for the area. You order at the window, sit down wherever you can find with a buzzer, and they buzz you to pick up the food when it's ready. My friend and I shared: two cocktails which were interesting packaged in plastic to-go cups even though we were eating for-here, steak sandwich and potatoes. Maybe the menu downsized due to covid or lunchtime but there weren't too many options. The cocktails were refreshing and cold. It was also the only cocktail offered on the menu lol. Honestly though the steak sandwich was pretty lackluster. The steak was a little tough. The potatoes were okay. This is surprising to me because there were so many reviews and the rating is so high on here. But honestly for Thousand Oaks this is not terrible in terms of food, I've definitely had worse just because there is not really competition in terms of good food here. Or maybe there are other better menu items here that we just overlooked. The aesthetic and vibe is pretty cool though. This location was such a great gem to find in Malibu. Great ambiance and service. The seating areas were really cool and felt like I was eating within nature. The grilled cheese sandwich was amazing. This spot was the perfect place, this review is during COVID times FYI. The steak was cooked medium rare to perfection and the baked potato was incredible. I got their house rosé and that went really well, very crisp. The staff, specifically Chrissy who takes your order, was so friendly and welcoming. I ordered the yogurt parfait loaded with granola and lots of fresh fruit. Way too much for one person. My husband ordered the pancakes with sausage and eggs. To say I'm obsessed with this place would be an understatement. I have been here for dinner and lunch and enjoyed both. The place has soul and you can sense the history once you arrive. It was once a stop on the pony express and all the buildings and decorations have a very charming old-timey Malibu homesteader feel. There is a medium sized parking lot and most of the spots are in the shade which is a plus for keeping your car cool in the warmer months. You definitely NEED a reservation for dinner, and like, months in advance. I think I've heard they have 1 table for 2 and you need to plan ahead if you want to book it. Lunch or brunch are good options if you haven't planned ahead. It's first come, first serve and you can get full service at the bar. The waitstaff are friendly, attentive and know the food, so don't be afraid of asking for advice if you're torn on what to order. They serve beer and wine, no liquor. Their take on a mimosa, a Manmosa is half a bottle of champagne and some OJ. It was great. And strong. Don't miss this gem if you spend any time in the Malibu/ Agoura area. read more
