What a place! Buddies of mine showed me this place as one of their favorites and I can see why. Tucked away, this location is peaceful and serene. I found myself wandering around checking out all the unique decor scattered among the vintage buildings. First in line for breakfast, we decided to split a breakfast burrito with steak substitute and cinnamon roll. The breakfast burrito was HUGE! Complimented with their house salsa - yum! And if it couldn't get any better, their cinnamon roll may be the best I have ever had. Super flaky and fresh. The icing was not overly sweet and had an amazing nutty taste. I'm not exactly sure how to describe this place. It reminds me of the little town in The movie Popeye. Handmade with different pieces of wood and metals very eclectic. Definitely a biker stop. It's on the way to Malibu. There's wine tasting ,steakhouse ,coffee shop and other things . Plenty of outdoor seating. The food was amazing I had the portobello mushroom dinner. I feel like I'm still full from that. My friends got a grilled cheese and a steak sandwich and they come with these potatoes that are so big and so delicious. It's like they cut a potato in the four pieces and give you like four potatoes on your plate . Definitely a five-star experience now I'm gonna go home and watch Sons of Anarchy! read more

This is the coziest place. It's very small and has a homey feel to it. This was our second time coming, and both times they had a singer come by to our table. I'm not sure if that's every night or what but it's very cool! You can request a song for them to sing and they sing it for just your table but a lot of the times other tables join in and it's a fun experience. If you're a champagne drinker, get the $12 mimosa! It's simply perfect! 3/4 Barefoot Bubbly champagne and just enough OJ so people don't call you a drunk ass. :) We ordered the chicken sandwich with the rosemary mayo and macaroni bake and both were fantastic! We live nearby and go here weekly. Coffee place is just okay. Weird hours. Expensive for what you get. Food: huge portions but crazy expensive. And not comparable to maestros steak. We never over-order because of this. To be expected because you fight with tourist prices in this area. Wish they had a local price/discount. Main thing is this: You kind of never know what the attitude of Sevice you're going to get. Sometimes they're entitled and treat you like you're inconveniencing them just by your mere presence and Sometimes the people are absolutely amazing and warm/kind. I don't know, maybe it's just me. Maybe it was COVID. Maybe it's management but it's just inconsistent. If I could change one thing, I'd request a few more kid friendly starters, snacks or just raw, quick plates. Went here for a special occasion 12-15-22. Lets get into this: Way over priced $$$$, the stew was runny, lacked any flavor. Half chicken, dry and little to no taste/flavor. Steak and Caesar salad: steak was bland raw w/ no flavor (suppose be med. rare too) GIANT croutons are county fair deep fried and overwhelming, top off w/ a dull knife and weird plate/bowl. The teeny tiny saloon glasses, ok, but I'm paying this much, gimmie a wine glass, and I (we) keep running out of water, I get the saloon thingy theme but man. Lighting could be greatly improved, while still preserving the low lighting and character, which I love (lots of restaurants miss on lighting; the ongoing saga). To the pot smoking posse in the booth at the window, the guy from "Oklahoma" who was loud, VULGAR (um, there are families here...kids) who could not stop talking about himself, and the they kept banging on the booth backboard between us-- SMH! This is a place to be seen, they have their locals and frequent fliers. This is a great pit stop, grab a beer, maybe appetizer, and move on (as I did once years ago). This is a very popular place for being out in BFE Cornell. It looks and feels rural but it is not far from the burbs or the 101 freeway. It is an old place but turned into a fashionable hipster dining experience with old world charm. Started as a hunting lodge about a century ago, this place served the rich of Los Angeles. There were at that time a post office and eatery. Today there is a coffee shop, restaurant, wine tasting bar and an antique store. The food was better than ok but for the price it should be fantastic. It is fantastic to lot of people but not to picky old me. The bison was juicy and well cooked but it was not well seasoned. My husband and I went for dinner on Friday. We never knew the place existed! A gem of a Yelp find! You could either order outside as take out and find a table on their beautiful patio terraces or eat inside. Surprisingly not crowded. You need a reservation for an inside table but you can sit at the bar and get full menu service. That's what we did. My vegetarian husband got the biggest baked potato we'd ever seen. For $12 it was a great dinner for him. I got the chicken pot pie. I've had better pot pie but this was very good. The service was very good and friendly. The front-of-house guy was very welcoming. Unique setting with delicious food! The Old Place is a rustic old general store surrounded by barns, peacock's strolling the grounds, benches and seating outside as well. Inside is a cozy bar with booths by reservation only. Minutes off the 101 and tucked within the Santa Monica mountains, it is worth the drive from any direction. The salads are filling, delicious and so fresh. The homemade croutons and bread are just scrumptious! Fresh, tasty and homemade would describe all of the menu items. Loved it!! It had been awhile since doing a review, and this was the first time that I visited for dinner hours while Covid safety rules were in place. I want to say that I seriously hope that the outdoor tables stay part of the setup when everything fully reopens. Sure, eating inside is nice, but this past time, it was a sunny afternoon that turned into a shady, lovely twilight. The food was top notch again, and I even splurged on a chocolate chip cookie. (Not to be confused with a chocolate chip frisbee.) I did prefer the ribeye over the chicken. I'm normally a red meat girl anyways, but wanted to get a variety on the table. We also ordered the portobello mushrooms dinner, which was a solid meal. I would get that again, as well. The loaded baked potato was starchy heavenly goodness. Thank goodness this place has made it through such a crazy few years (remember those fires?). Can't wait to go back! The downside actually has nothing to do with the establishment, but towards irresponsible patrons. If you're eating outside, throw your own trash away when you're done! There was one couple sitting at the table behind us that A) Didn't wear their masks properly when inside the wine shop and B) Just got up and left their trash opened and out on the table. This is a local favorite BBQ restaurant that has been around for over 50 years and there is a reason for it. Grab a blankie and good company for a scenic drive through the Santa Monica Mountains to check this place out. Location 9/10 - 20 mn drive south off the 101 freeway on Kanan Rd., and still drivable distance from most of LA. Food -9/10 on the pricier side but portions are good and possibly even shareable. Made reservations months in advance and had very high expectations- they were surpassed! We were seated right at our 7:00 seating time. This spot has been on my list for a while because it was mentioned in other foodie blogs and seemed so mysterious because of its location. It was up in the hills off the 101 on Mulholland. It was a darkly lit area but the restaurant was all wooden and looked like an old western saloon-like place. Since we went in December it was decorated with lights for the holidays. It has parking in a dirt lot on the side. The place is small and they only did 2 dinner times (5pm & 7pm) so it was packed and we were a party of 4. The menu was limited so we got the littleneck clams, bacon & we all got the ribeye. The portions were big but the best thing was the clams. The service was decent and there was a woman who offered to play songs on her guitar. Personally, coming here you don't feel like you're in LA, so it was an experience but all around I'd probably only come back for an occasion. read more

Went there recently for dinner based recommendation from Yelp. The dinner was disappointing as no flavor on my steak, as well as my dining friends received their dishes late and it showed; plates seemed that they were waiting for a "pick-up" when it was ready; the food was lukewarm, and vegetables flat (again, I am thinking it sat there at window for awhile). Beer and cocktails were good, and ambiance is great. This may be a good afternoon place as scenery is awesome. For me, I like to be greeted with a smile as I am choosing to spend a good amount of hard-earned money there, not made not feel like I am asking for a favor to wait for table I had reserved...if my money is not needed, I will take elsewhere....and I do. read more

the food atmosphere music and service was great up until the end of the meal. when paying I entered the tip and the manager came to our table and in front of the whole party asked if i had meant to leave such a small tip. i had accidentally entered the wrong amount on the electronic tablet. it was incredibly embarrassing and my guests were forced pulled cash out of ther wallets to give more for a tip. i think the matter could have been handled much more discreetly and without doing it in front of my guests. while i applaud the instinct to reward and care for service people, embarrassing customers in front of their guests is inappropriate. read more

First for the positive aspects. The Old Place is a charming, rustic, cobbled-together locale with an Old West ambience. I remember going there in the late 1970s, following the Renaissance Faire and really enjoying the steamed clams. Times have changed, indeed. I have a better name for The Old Place: The Odd Place. This once boho-style eatery has gone corporate with a truly astounding list of rules and regs: No reservations, separate hours for inside/outside dining, separate menus for inside/outside dining, all of which are confusing. Two of us walked into the bar and were rudely ordered out. There is no personal service whatsoever: for lunch, you must walk around the back of the building to order from a window, at which time you get a beeper. When your order is ready, you have to again walk around the back of the building to pick up the styrofoam container plus your beer or wine, then schlepp it back to the seating area. And for this inconvenience they tack on an automatic 18% gratuity! For what? Pure corporate greed. Now, about the food: I ordered a BLT sandwich at $23. Upon opening the container, I found an enormous sloppy, unwieldy mess that had just been tossed into the container. It was impossible to pick up, let alone eat, without the entire thing falling apart. The "bacon" was actually chunky logs of fatty pork belly. The romaine was limp. The aoili just spilled onto the sandwich. No design, no artistry, no back-of-the-house pride in the appearance of the product going out to the customer. The portions are huge, enough to feed a family of four. The waste of product is shocking. What are they thinking? I've had far better BLTs at Denny's. For couples, wine tasting and dogs, it's a unique experience. The seating seems to be geared mostly for couples. For groups of over four, however, I can't recommend it. We were a party of nine, celebrating a birthday. My friend complained to a man she took to be the manager (although he declined to say what his role was), and she was told, "that's just the way it is". My feeling is that The Old Place has a solid customer base of wealthy patrons that they pander to, so they can afford to ignore the suburbanites that wander in. They are also still milking a long-revered reputation of excellence and fun from the glory days. read more

First time here and we loved it! The atmosphere, the beautiful decorations in each individual area for outdoor seating! Loved it! What a gem! Ofcourse we had the cinnamon buns which were soo good! Definitely must try! I got the BLT off their menu and my husband got the breakfast burrito. Both were excellent choices and came with a large amount of potato wedges that were perfectly seasoned. We have been loyal patrons of Old Place for decades and have recommended it to many over the years. Unfortunately, our last visit was deeply disappointing. The "door guy" was not only rude but also demeaning and very aggressive toward my kind, patient elderly mother--right outside the restaurant and in full view of other guests waiting for their tables. To make matters worse, our waiter was cold and unhelpful, leaving our group feeling rushed and unwelcome despite spending $500 on dinner. 5 stars for the location and staff, and 3.8 stars for the food. I've been to the Old Place many times during the past years and stopped by again last week having been here last about 3 years ago. The large property is western ranch style with dining tables located only outside and are scattered throughout the exterior. There are peacocks calling to each other while sitting in various trees which are away from the dining tables. The interior dining room and bar are still closed, and the menu for now is limited from what it used to be. We usually order from the lunch menu, which now features portobello, steak, cheese, blt or chicken sandwiches. We've tried them all during the years. All were good. The potato wedges are great. They have beer and wine selections as well. Next door, same property, is the Cornell Winery and Tasting Room. As we are oenophiles, we tried some very local wines again. All tastings are outside now, but you can go inside to buy bottles and look around. Check the times and days they are open on THEIR WEB SITE. Free parking. Lots of fun walking around the property. This place is nestled in the mountains on your way to Malibu via Kanan. Arriving here it seemed to be a bar atmosphere but discovered indoor and outdoor seating was available. The menu is just what we were looking for. Some comfort food of short rib beef stew and chicken pot pie with mashed potatoes. While waiting at our table outside the views and sounds of birds and peacocks strolling by us was quite entertaining. We did experience one blip(wait time) in ordering but we were taken care of. When the food buzzer went off and we picked up our meals we were so hungry. The food was perfection. The beef stew and the other entrees we ordered were delicious. We ended our dinner by ordering the blueberry/raspberry cobbler that came with its own cream topper on the side. Soooooo good!! We will definitely be back! Happy we discovered this place.
