I had the fish and chips wife had the salmon , plus a Side of onion rings. all three were deep fried in a thick greasy batter.seems like there is no chief in the kitchen, my 10 year old grandson could have cooked these 3 items ..the cooking method was dip in this batter and drop everything in the oil and take it out when you see its dark brown. Fish was so over cooked and dry,, there was barely a piece of onion in that thick batter as for my fries the chips that went with my fish and chips there was no potato just a hard crunch .the kitchen needs a grill and an oven and a chief ,its not possible to just deep fry everything ..never going back.... read more

Old Fields 1000% deserves five stars. Outstanding food, excellent service and awesome atmosphere makes this establishment a place my wife and I love to frequent. A few tips: - Best place to sit in my opinion is in the bar section in the front. They only allow 18 and over in this area, so if you're bringing the kids, The next best area to sit would be the area to the right of the bar section. There is a back room where there is also ample seating, but for atmosphere purposes, I would go with the front or side area. - All the wait staff are extremely nice and accommodating. We've sat with Greg G. a few times and he has been the best. - They only make reservations for 6+ people, so I would recommend getting there early over the weekend. - Outstanding beer selection on tap. Definitely go out of your comfort zone and try one of the specials. They carry some great IPA varieties. - Best turkey burger I have ever had is at Old Fields. Order it exactly the way it comes, and the flavor / texture are the best! - You have to try the steak fries. They are some of the best fries that I have ever tasted. Old Fields doesn't give ketchup bottles for the table, so if you are a ketchup nut like me, I would ask for additional individual cups of it. - The skirt steak is marinated to perfection. I order mine medium rare, and it is incredibly satisfying. - When they have the fire roasted corn on the cob special, I highly suggest you try it. It's one of the most unique corn on the cobs that you'll ever have. Unique AND fantastic. You have to eat it by using your knife to shave off all the pieces of corn... unless you'd like to get your hands and face all dirty with the white sauce that's drizzled over it. - Can't be a huge fan of everything that they have. Not in love with the short ribs in risotto. The risotto is fantastic itself, but the meat is somewhat stringy and not nearly as flavorful as their steaks. - Going backwards for starters, The spinach and artichoke dip is definitely homemade. You can tell because it's not processed like the chain restaurants have it. It's very cheesy and very fresh. Instead of chips, they surround it with pita bread wedges. - For finishers, their bread pudding is one of the best bread puddings I have ever had. At this point you should be extremely stuffed with the meal, so my recommendation is that you order one bread putting for every three people. Steaks / Pub We hit up Old Fields because we were in the mood for steaks - and we were in the area and as it was early, we were able to score a few seats at the bar. First off, let me say that they make an ass-kicking man sized drink in this place. Glasses were big and the got you on your way. Worth every penny. Bartenders are spot on but they could have been a little better with buy-backs... don't think we got but one on a whole lot of drinks. The menu proper was decent but not gigantic. I thought there were enough choices and we all settled for some version of their steaks. I went with a marinated skirt steak; the marinade is apparently from the 50's and has been passed down from generation to generation. It was ok - I didn't find it that mind blowing, but it was fine enough. The steaks came out cooked as requested and everyone in my party seemed to enjoy theirs. I had some mixed veggies and fries as well and both were cooked perfectly. I was happy to see that the veggie medley was not the same ole that you get everywhere, but an interesting mix of fennel, carrots, and maybe some arugula. Nice place, great location in the heart of tiny, often overlooked Greenlawn, LI, NY. It's been there FOREVER, but it took a generous gift card to get us in the door. Looks like it's getting plenty of attention though, as it's apparently been listed as one of Long Island's 100 best restaurants. I'm not quite sure I'd go that far, but it was VERY busy on a recent Saturday night. We weren't able to make a reservation, as we were five people, and were told they only take reservations for six or more (?!?) and had to wait an uncomfortable 10-15 minutes all squeezed into the entry/bar area, but we were pretty lucky (at 6:30pm) and were seated relatively quickly. Server came pretty soon to take our drink and appetizer order (wonderful spinach and artichoke dip with warm pita bread) and listed the tempting-sounding specials. None of us are big steak eaters, but they've got a large number of choices, all pretty pricey (to me), along with some great looking fish, seafood, and my lone veggie/pasta choice, Ravioli (other than some interesting sounding salads, available with or without meat). Maybe I've been gone from NY too long, and/or I'm just a die-hard cheapo (don't want to spend a ton of $$$ even with a gift card!!) but in spite of being a "nice enough" place, I don't think the prices matched what we were offered. Go if you're in the area, esp. for some more reasonable burger and sandwich choices at lunch time/off hours, and I hear they also have a great brunch. Very nice local neighborhood restaurant. I enjoyed the marinated skirt steak and I topped it with sauteed red onions and blue cheese, most enjoyable! The steak came with red skin mashed potato's and roasted asparagus. We also had the short ribs and goat cheese risotto, also very good. The wait staff was very friendly and knowledgeable. The drinks were made with a heavy pour and the Long Island Ice Tea was a 10, just made perfectly. The Key lime martini was a little to sweet for my taste. The crowd was mixed(all different age groups) and everyone was having a good time. My only negative was the limited menu, just wish they had a few more choices and specials. read more

Great spot, thanks for the tips people! Came for a burger but was pushed to try more of the menu. I ended up going with the shortrib over risotto. Which was really done well. Not too much risotto, the shortrib was the star of the show. We also tried the Mussels app and Buttermilk biscuits with sausage gravy. Both were delicious. Also this place seems pretty generous with drinks in terms of size and cost.. I think I paid $8 for a real nice size honey Jack & Ginger. Will definitely be back soon to try a burger! read more

Gf had a Vodka and Cranberry her usual. The bartender was attentive considering how crowded it was, I was pleasantly surprised. Table was ready after waiting no more than 10 or 15 minutes. We planned on trying the burgers but looking around the steaks looked great so we'll definitely be back. She had the Classic with Bacon and Bleu cheese, it was yummy... I took a bite or two lol I ordered Davy Gravey, Burger between two grilled cheese sandwiches with sweet potato fries, thee best burger on the island. On top of great food the service is right up there with any 5 star 4 $ restaurant. Our waiter was attentive when necessary but definitely not over bearing. Vintage steakhouse with great food! The menu for steaks is small but the steaks they offer are perfect. My fiance and I got the 8oz filet and 10oz marinated flat iron (best of both worlds) and they were both delicious. The 10oz was marinated in their famous 56 marinate, highly recommend and was my favorite over the filet. The appetizers were great as well. My husband and I love this place! In the winter, it's charming and cozy with a fireplace roaring and delicious comfort food. In the summer, we bring our dog and sit outside. We've consistently had great experiences. You won't find a better burger. And they also have a 1/2 roast chicken in a skillet with green beans and rice that my husband gets every single time. This Friday I went with my sister and nieces and they have fantastic apps like Mac and cheese and spinach and artichoke dip that is fresh and delicious. The girls had a giant shake that they said was incredible. And the grown ups loved the cocktail selection. Especially the ruby martini. Really the only critique I can think of is the bar area fills up on weekends and can be loud and packed. But for us, it's well worth the wait for a great meal and top notch service. OK - that's how I would sum-up my experience. First of all, the service was excellent. My server was very attentive and helpful. Nice atmosphere - sort of like a corner pub. I started with the lobster bisque special which was very good. Nice portion of lobster and well-seasoned. The spinach dip was nothing special - there was spinach and there was cheese...but lacking on flavor. Something I would expect from a supermarket freezer aisle being warmed up in microwave. The fish special sounded delicious - Bass with artichokes and asparagus. In fact, it looked very inviting (see my pic). However, it was over-done with salt. I love this place. Good food, good drinks, good service; it all worked. We came here around 8pm on a Saturday night during restaurant week. The menu peaked my interest very quickly and I knew we needed to eat here. The place was paaaacked. Good sign! We were told our wait would be 45 minutes. Lucky for us after about 10 minutes a couple left the bar and we sat down and decided to dine there. The bartender was very attentive. I was impressed especially since it was quite busy. The service was great. I started with the ghost julep and my fiancé had the apricot wheat beer. Both of our drinks were top notch. Mine was especially good. For appetizers we ordered the shrimp and grits and the maple bacon. The shrimp and grits were incredible. The grits were especially good and paired well with the sauce and was able to sop up all the deliciousness. The shrimp were a tad overcooked but it was still amazing. The portion was also quite large. My fiancé's bacon was good. The portion was small but it was cooked perfectly. Our entrees were just as exciting. My fiancé had the duck pot pie and loved it. He ate the entire thing and was sad when it was gone. I stole 1 bite but I'm not crazy about curry so I might now be the best judge. I ordered the ribeye. On the actual menu I noticed that this dish is usually $40. For the restaurant week menu it was only a $10 upcharge and it was beyond worth it. The steak was cooked perfectly. It had a beautiful charred crust on the outside and the meat inside was perfectly rare. The asparagus was cooked perfectly and the potatoes were delicious. This was the best steak I've ever had. We also shared the mac and cheese and holy cow was it good. For dessert we sampled the bread pudding and the smores sundae. The bread pudding was must more mashed up than I'm used to but it was delicious none-the-less. The smores brownie was kind of a bust. The brownie was too sweet and then paired with the marshmallow fluff in the ice cream it was just cloying. A shame really. There are so many more things on the menu I need to try! read more

At our arrival, the host informed us our table reservation was running a bit late and comped us a couple of drinks at the bar while we waited. I had the key lime martini and my wife had a peach ginger mixed drink, both were expertly made and very tasty. My wife and I had come for Valentines and they had a special prix fixe menu which included many of the normal items on the menu. The lobster bisque was creamy and had bits of lobster on top. The lamb lollipops were actually a bit tough and over cooked, the side sauce did make it better but overall not the greatest. The skirt steak was the highlight of the meal as it was well seasoned and may have been the best skirt steak I've ever had. It was very tender and not chewy like most normal skirts steaks. The s'mores sundae was very good, fluff marshmallow atop vanilla ice cream atop a warm brownie that had plenty of chocolate chips. We were both plenty stuffed by the end of the meal and ended up taking home what will be great lunches for tomorrow. Highly recommended. read more

This was My 2nd time at Oldfield's. I had been there appx one year ago and thought it was ok at best. However, my wife had been here a few times since then and she really liked it, so I gave it another shot. The restaurant opens at 5pm on Saturday's. We got there at 5:10pm and it was already pretty crowded. The hostess was very pleasant and sat us in a booth. The waiter came over right away and took our drink order. The waiter then went over the specials for the evening, including the prices for each. I thought this was a nice touch as usually, in other restaurants (at least in my experience) I'd have to ask what something would cost. My wife ordered the Korean BBQ skewers (a special) and I ordered the New England clam chowder off the menu. The Korean BBQ was very tasty, but it was only 3 small pieces of meat on each of the 3 skewers; $15 for this was a bit overpriced. The clam chowder was delicious, but it was room temperature. I had to send it back; when the waiter brought it back it was piping-hot, which is what should be expected. For dinner, my wife ordered the marinated flank steak. It came with mashed potatoes and a vegetable. The waiter made it know that we could switch out to whatever vegetable they had to choose from; my wife chose the spinach. I ordered the marinated skirt steak, which came with the same sides. Again, the waiter advised that I could switch out the vegetable to another vegetable. I opted for the roasted corn. While my wife enjoyed her meal, I thought mine was just ok. The skirt steak was good, not great. In addition, I was charged an additional $4 for the change in vegetable! Now, I didn't say anything to the waiter because we were trying to catch a movie and we were running late, but I wound up paying $39 for my meal. It was already highly overpriced at $35. Don't get me wrong, this place has charm, a friendly staff, and it's definitely a favorite of the local community. Having said that, it's overpriced and the food is good, not great. Would I go back again? Maybe in another year I'll try it again. read more

We ordered: Buttermilk fried calamari.... good Brie....teenagers liked it very much Wings... terrible... soft skin wings I hate. Short Rib risotto /Caesar Salad....awesome risotto and salad was fine but not fantastic. Pumpkin Ravioli.... wife loved it. Burger.... my son thought it was very good Skirt steak.... my daughter and her boyfriend really liked it and cooked properly...medium Smoked Duck French Dip...other teenager liked it ...very filling. S'mores... very good Sugar cake pie w whip... very good Service was good and enjoyed the ambiance, noise level and of course the food...very consistent here. I understand I'm not going to enjoy every thing on the menu but Old Fields always puts out a good meal. PS... you gotta improve the wings though and I do get pissed to see you charge for a fountain Diet Coke at $3 an 10 oz glass w 66% ice. I've been to Old fields probably 15 times, and it never disappoints. The atmosphere is old school classy, the cocktails are top notch (the Ron Jovi and smoked tequila sunrise are great), and the service is genuinely friendly and memorable. While the burgers, steaks, and ahi tuna are all great, the Duck French Dip is downright the greatest meal I've ever had (for the third time now). The best, bar nothing. It's uniquely flavorful, with thin cut duck, sweet onions sauteed to perfection, and dipping sauce that could stand as a soup by itself. It's simply incredible. The bread pudding and brownie desserts are not to miss either. However, make a reservation for big parties, because this place fills up fast. read more

Very good service with a friendly staff, the kitchen is accommodating and bartenders more than welcoming to all. Food is always SOLID and consistent. Your meal will always be good. You come here to relax in that warm feeling atmosphere, drink ale or cocktails and to warm your belly up with food that far exceeds standard pub food. My boyfriend and I are regulars at the Old Fields location in Port Jefferson. That said, we sometimes like to stop here for a quick bite when one of us is taking the train home from Manhattan. So, the first upside to this place is the location. Super convenient and fun to be able to walk off the train and grab a table or a seat at the bar. The atmosphere in this location is friendly and inviting, and seems a bit quieter than in Port Jeff, which I can definitely appreciate. The food is excellent. - my go-to is the ahi tuna sandwich, but I also love their turkey burger, and the chicken and waffles appetizer. They have some great drinks, too - the mules are awesome. I usually go with a Mexican mule, made with tequila. As for the dessert menu, you pretty much can't go wrong. Far and away my favorite part about both Old Fields locations is the service. They just seem to always get it right. The servers are friendly, knowledgeable, and attentive. This past Thursday, we sat at the bar to watch the Yankee game. The bartender was awesome! I wish I'd caught his name. This guy was super on top of things - always checking in with us and making friendly conversation. He really made our night a great one. Thanks Old Fields! read more

My friend and I both had steak which was cooked perfectly to temperature. The sides could have been better and were a little undersized. We've been here, maybe three times before, and enjoyed it. Funny how it just takes one terrible experience and we won't return. This was an awful experience. To begin, my husband ordered a burger and I ordered the salad on the special menu, a Country Salad, I think it was named. I asked for grilled chicken on top. It contained maybe four thin slices of cucumber, 3 halves of cherry tomatoes, some corn kernels, some potatoes, and perhaps it was arugula with massive uncut stems. Ok. So here we go. I asked my husband how his burger was. He replied, "Well if you mess up a burger, you're in big trouble!" Well how do you mess up a salad? I'll give you some ideas. The chicken on top was so rubbery that my teeth squeaked as I chewed it, like that squeak you hear when you chew Haloumi, only that's supposed to be like that. I tried 3 pieces and then asked my husband to try it. I couldn't believe the texture nor could he. Were they rubber bands disguised to look like chicken? So I called the waiter over and begged him to try the chicken. He refused, but asked if I wanted the same salad with shrimp. I agreed. I think there were 4 large shrimp over, those similar, Arugula stems with a few leaves, the corn, tomatoes, cucumber (can you spare the few slices?), and potatoes. Oh, let me tell you about the potatoes. When I was a teenager, I'd stand in front of the fridge, with a fork, and sample whatever was available. Well the potatoes could have come from that refrigerator. Ever have leftover cold potatoes? Nor have I, except as a teen. So, this "meal", along with a club soda and an iced tea, came out to $50. Yep. The waiter did bring over 2 small comp. glasses filled with ice cream and soda. I don't like sending food back. But this is the worst restaurant experience we've had in a very long time.
