DRUNK ALTER EGO-- Levils Dettuce Mama Mia! So far rome has been great. Carbs every meal and wine every night. After stumbling over cobble stones for 2 miles (?) our group of 11 finds ourselves at Old Bear. First impression: interior decorations live up to the name. The sangria flowed like water. My friend seated to my right, "almost tastes like the chaser!" My friend sitting across from me, "I would have eaten the orange in my glass if the waiter didn't take it away." My order: eggplant parmesan and fresh tomato bruschetta Everyone else: truffle lasagne The sangria went straight to my head, and I made a stupid pun. Thanks alcohol! My friend sitting to my left who got the lasagne, "creamy, melty, but also light sauce-- and I love shrooms ;) (fire emoji!)" I'm still getting used to eating dinner at this ungodly time, but all in all 10/10 experience. Will be back. read more

Great start for our first evening in Rome ! After a long day of moving around flying, busses and cars we were all tired and wanted to get some magnificent authentic Italian food. I fired up the yelp app and this place popped up right away next to our hotel ! Great service in English and food was cheap and delicious ! 72€ total for 3 mains, 2 starters , couple of big water bottles, sangria and vodka and desert. Okay.... I've been to many restaurants in Rome with awesome reviews and everything. I'm telling you this is the best of all. We were recommended by this American couple on a cruise that we met at a different restaurant. They accidentally found this place near where they were staying, so they told us to check it out. I recommend to come earlier because it can be packed real quick, especially if you want to sit outside. I had Prosecco to celebrate our last night in Rome and ordered the truffle lasagna .. it was the best food I had in Rome hands down. I almost wanted to order more even I was already full, my gf had this gnocchi that also tasted amazing. The waitress were friendly and speaks English well. I wish it wasn't my last night in Rome I would've go back to this place again and again. I was in Rome previously but didn't come across this restaurant, I will make sure I'll put it in my itinerary for my next visit! They have great desserts too. Stopped for a quick drink and a snack after an afternoons sightseeing. Grabbed a beer (oddly only Tennants or Paulaner available) and ordered the Tomato Bruschetta and the Parma Ham Crostini. One of our best meals in Rome and very nice servers and staff. We started with the Pinot Grigio, which was perfect for the warm summer night. I thought I wanted to sit outside but then decided inside bc they have ceiling fans to move the air. They don't do this a lot in Europe but helps to create a breeze. My kids got the gnocchi and it was delicious, they ate all of it. I got the Lasagne with mushroom truffles and also one of my favorite dishes in Rome. My husband got spaghetti with Lobster and also delish. The prices are fair and we left happy and full. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone and would go back when I'm in Rome. read more

Really liked their lamb skewers and truffle lasagna. I usually dont like strong truffle smell/taste due to oily feeling, but the dish was perfect balance! Highly recommended! My husband and son loved Lamb, but I dont like lamb in general due to smell, but it was not smelly and tasty. read more

I make it a point to come to Old Bear every time I'm in Rome. As many have highlighted, the Truffle Lasagna is to die for, and all of their items are priced very fairly! Food taste great but we got food poisoning/gastroenteritis from eating dinner here . My two children and myself suffered nausea, vomiting , dizziness, fever and frequent diarrhea around midnight to the ff day after eating dinner here cramping our plans to visit the Coliseum. We did not eat lunch that day so we had a big dinner here that night. Not sure if steak was not stored properly or cooked properly or the raw beef was not done properly or they were not washing hands while preparing food or contaminating the food. On a side street a couple of blocks of Piazza Navona, in a non nondescript building alone a narrow alley way lies this wonderful restaurant. Before I get to the food , the drinks were just excellent, I'd give the place 5 stars just for the sangria ! I could drink it all night long, and I probably did. lol ! The beer comes in nice big ceramic mugs, they do have Tennant's Lager on tap, and for the german connoisseur Paulaner dunkel flows aplenty. The vegetarian options are limited, but judging by how fast my friends finished and savoured their meat options, I am positive it was just delish. The outside seating is a bit crammed and the tables are a bit wobbly but then i think it tends to add to the charm of the place. The inside has a nice rustic feel and they do take all major credit cards. One word of caution, if you must eat outside, the traffic can get annoying. Dinner was great-(Make a reservation- they get busy) and the staff is wonderful. What do you get when you combine good food, good wine, good service, good atmosphere, and a great location? You get a restaurant rated a 4 and a recommendation for others to go there. First, don't go to Rome in August, but if you do, go in the first half of August before the Italians all go on holiday. My preferred season for Rome is still December through February, but here we were in August. Piazza Navona is a zoo. Crowded, chaotic, touristy, etc. Take your pictures and get the hell out as soon as possible. As you wander over towards Old Bear, you'll notice immediately that the streets narrow and quiet down, the tourists thin out, and a certain peace comes over you. You are probably good to stop into any of the three or four places in the area, but we went to Old Bear. We sat outside on a Saturday night at 9ish and had almost zero car traffic going by. Some foot traffic (mostly tourist groups from hell heading to God knows where), but very few cars. We got a 1/2L of Montepulciano, the gnocchi, and pasta of the day. All were great. Food is average definitely NOT authentic. The service is absurd. The manager/ owner simply ask us to hurry up and leave while we just got started with our dessert. Simply because she said they have another reservation for our table. Wow!! is all I can say! There's no degree of customer service here. Amazing dinner. Started with bruschetta of porcini ( not on the menu) and one of eggplant. The two of us shared the truly decadent mushroom bechamel lasagna and the pasta with mussels, tomato and goat cheese. Both delicious in very different ways. We came to this restaurant 5 years ago 3 times because of the quality and flavors of the food. Five years later, came back and is still the same, one of the best restaurants in Rome. Close to Piazza Navona and the Vatican. If in Rome, please visit. You will not regret it!!! I had salmon crostini that was delicious. If you don't eat to much, the portion is enough for one person. Two pieces of bread with a good portion salmon of one person. I had to share because I ordered a lasagne and if I ate all the crostini I could not have anything more. I first ate at Old Bear 5 years ago and had a memorable experience. The inside is all wood and the outside has cute tables lining a little cobblestone street. I came to Rome to learn Italian; I have since then absorbed the culture and food. Eating here now, my taste has developed to spot touristy and authentic restaurants. The food isn't necessarily bad, nor is it good. Pasta isn't made "al dente," but rather soft. The tartufo (truffle) pasta was very heavy with little personality; we got bored of it and it was left unfinished. My cozze e pecorino (mussels and pecorino cheese) pasta was bland because of the under-salted water, in which the pasta was boiled. I wonder if I would have liked the same food back then. In Rome, food that isn't great is a waste of time and calories. There are MANY places to eat, especially in this neighborhood. read more

This is what I flew across the world for! Tucked away down a cobbled street in the Piazza Navona area, we stumbled across (luckily YELPED thanks to the monocole feature) this wonderful taverna late at night. It felt very homey and we were made to feel very welcome by the staff. A great selection of European beers and well-priced delicious wines, with excellent food and a wide choice of dishes on the menu. The stone bass carpaccio was to die for - best starter I've had, better than in some 5-star restaurants we have had in New York and Miami. Food portions are very generous so remember to bring your appetite with you. The bolognese was phenomenal as well. This place is a local favorite and I can see why. It's a five minute walk from tourist zones but far enough away where it has it's own peaceful and enchanting environment. Many times there will be live music for the outside tables which creates such a rich experience. The food. It will not disappoint. In fact you can have the highest expectations going in and still be amazed at how delicious and flavorful the food is! Beautiful old tavern decor on a quiet street a few blocks from piazza Navonna. Loved dinner here. Great friendly service, loved the food, and at least 4 of the desserts are delicious! Best of all my two daughters, my wife, and I had the Italian dinner experience. We sat around 8:30, ate talked and laughed, and finished around 11 pm. Three courses. No TV, no video games. Pure family bonding. The street is very quiet and peaceful. One misunderstanding, though: we thought this was a brewery when we read the menu from the street. It said "birreria". But the beer selection was limited and not made on premises. They do have craft beer on tap but only a few choices.
