Sure people looked at us, but it felt like a lot of them were regulars since the servers knew some by name. Our server was wonderful and patient, she gave suggestions of what she liked and helped us decide. The portions were larger than I expected for the price. Loved the onion rings. They looked hand breaded and were crisp and hot when they came to the table. If we are in the area again I will be back to try other items on the menu.

Know that I am a city boy and this is in rural Indiana. Two thousand people live in Cloverdale. We stopped on our way to a sprint car race not far from here. There are just not many dining options. While I do not think usual clientele or others would be put off, there were some signs outside that warned you of their conservative political beliefs, warning you to not enter if this offends you. I did not. I went in and did not feel uncomfortable my the hospitality. Ambiance is basic. There is nothing fancy, but then again, it was just fine. I may seem prejudiced, but this comment is sincere and meant to be purely complimentary. My friend, from rural Indiana agreed. "This place brought to mind that it is where you go after the hay is stacked, the cows are in the barn, you are hungry and can get your fill of good food, cheap." The daily specials posted suggested I come back. Service bringing our order was slow, but our server apologized and explained a kitchen issue. No worries. We both ordered the quintessential Indiana sandwich - Pork Tenderloin. I got the grilled and he got the fried. Never in my life have I seen a meal called a "sandwich" that looked like this. The tenderloin was as big as a dinner plate. The bun looked a decoration more than the basis for a sandwich. The meat was easily twice or three times the diameter of the ornamental bun. Neither of us could even eat half. Deferring to my Hoosier native, he declared this one of the best tenderloins he ever had. Unfortunately, my grilled version was a bit dry. We have made tenderloins at home in TN. I cannot for the life of me figure out how they pounded that cut of meat into the shape they served.

Best biscuits and gravy in the world (no lie)! Biscuits and gravy is a guilty pleasure no matter…read morewhat your figure looks like, but if you're going to give in to temptation, theirs are the best. I don't know how they do it, but it is always consistently wonderful. They serve breakfast all day (open daily early til 1 or 2, depending on crowd) with great omelets, eggs any way, good pancakes, and especially good French toast. American fries (sliced fried potatoes) or hash browns are available as well as either sausage or bacon. They serve fountain Coke products (yay!) and their bottomless cup of coffee is good. For lunch there are assorted plate lunches. You select the meat you want and the sides. They have good hamburgers, tenderloins, fish sandwiches -- all the traditional standard American diner choices. The JJ Special is the giant hamburger with all the fixins. Their french fries are very good and they have fried mushrooms, too. J&J's is a family owned diner. One of my favorite places for breakfast and lunch -- we always camp out there for lunch every Saturday. They have numerous 4-top tables, a long 8-top, and a round table at the back for people to sit and visit through the day. A true mid-western diner, J&J Roadhouse has a soda fountain counter with button stools. Food comes out through a window behind the counter. Milk shakes are made with real ice cream. Be sure to ask what pies are available if you are interested. I wish they had them out in one of those displays on the counter like they used to... A tv hangs near the ceiling with the volume low so those who want can follow important sports games or the weather channel. The day's Lafayette and Monticello newspapers are usually available at the end of the lunch counter. J&J has a great family feel. The decor includes Brookston memoribilia, and a giant bingo board at the back end for when the Lions hold their weekly Wednesday night bingo. It's a fun night if you can make it. There are lots of menu choices for kids (who will love sitting at the counter) and it is easily navigated with a wheelchair. I hope you like J&J Roadhouse as much as I do!
