Ate here right after Christmas with my adult daughter. We had brunch. It was delicious ! We got the typical breakfast food, and it was amazing. We especially liked the fried mashed potatoes. The food is great! I eat here all the time and the last time I was in here was last week. I ordered their broccoli cheddar soup and it was delicious as well as a Caesar salad which was also delicious. Their service is always great and their staff is always friendly! Hubbartt's Downtown Diner delivers all the charm of a bustling diner with mouthwatering, homemade meals and warm, efficient service. I ordered the Turkey Manhattan special, and every bite proved the turkey was crafted in-house--tender, juicy, and packed with flavor. The mashed potatoes and gravy rounded out the dish, though I added a pinch of salt to taste. The diner was clean, the atmosphere lively, and the food arrived in just ten minutes. From start to finish, my experience here was fantastic, and I can't wait to come back for more! read more

What a beautiful place. The food was wonderful. We ordered off the menu but they have a lunch bar that looked wonderful. We bought dessert to go as well. No one can resist big pieces of pie. Service is outstanding. Thank you for a great first time experience. We will definitely be back. read more

Always consistent food and service. Love that I can stop by and always get a good meal and great service.

Great place to grab breakfast or lunch! Such yummy soups & sandwich's. We order lunch here often. read more

Decent, reliable food that seems to go over well with the locals who dine here. The breakfast buffet was a hit. Omelets off the menu were generous in size and tasty. Service could be a notch higher. The young girl handling payment of the bills at the register could benefit from some training in manners and social interaction with customers. Glued to her cell phone, she seemed annoyed at having to process our bill. There was no "Hi", "Hello", "How was your food?", and most importantly, no "Thank You". These things should matter. read more

Food was average Service could use improvement It has a fair ambiance. It's rather dark on the side with the booths read more

We stopped in a Sunday morning on the way to a funeral. Had the buffet. Food was hot and fresh, tasted great. Service was fast and friendly. Picked up a box of cinnamon rolls to go. Wish I'd gotten 2! They were awesome! read more

Food was excellent - particularly loved that it was a buffet for only 7-8 dollars. Would give a 5 star review but pretty much no one wore a mask and that rubs me a very wrong way with how bad COVID has been. read more

Led my Thursday Lunch Bunch group of motorcycle riders on a 250-mile round trip ride from Ted's Motorcycle World in Alton to Hubbartt's Downtown Diner in Matoon, and we all thoroughly enjoyed our meals. Food was great and prices very reasonable. Service was prompt and friendly. I give Hubbartt's 5 stars. Definitely would come back again! read more

Read reviews before coming and they were all so good I was so excited to bring my parents for family weekend at EIU. We waited 30 mins for our food after ordering. The waitress was not friendly and was only seen Smiling to regulars that she knew by name. My food came out Luke warm at best after the wait. The sad fact that the food probably would have been good if it were actually hot but I don't want to eat cold eggs. In the beginning we were looking at the menu and discussing wanting to come back for lunch and dinner. That will not be the case after the service we received. read more

Cute diner with good food! Easy access from the interstate. Pricing was decent and there were lots of choices! Would visit again if I was coming thru the area. Thanks! read more

The service was fantastic and friendly. The portions were not slight. The bacon was big, crisp and had good flavor. Not like cheap bacon some restaurants serve. Let me tell you they know how to butter toast! How hard is that? Judging by some places, pretty dang tough. We will definitely be back. read more

We venture into Mattoon every couple years and this has been our go to spot. The quintessential small town diner that has probably looked the same for the past 50 years and they're doing things up the way they should be. We tend to come in for breakfast, as any good diner should be doing. The DD is certainly doing it up right. Nothing out of the ordinary - just good old fashioned eggs, bacon, pancakes, french toast and the proper fixins. Our every time go to is the corned beef hash - mama and papa love them some delicious CBH! Most of the options run in the $4-8 range and the buffet will get you just about everything, including fruit, for something like $6. Good coffee and some delightful waitresses that have worked here for a long time and give you just enough crap to know they care! Seriously, there is something incredibly endearing about a waitress with military style forearm tattoos! Great spot to stop anytime you're around. Nostalgia abounds, both in the ambiance and the food. read more

Had their Sunday lunch buffet. It was like having a homemade feast at grandma's house. It was Delicious! Fried chicken, crisp and seasoned perfectly, mashed potatoes were heaven, the bread rolls were fresh baked and melted in your mouth. The homemade stuffing- freaking perfect. They also had Au Gratin potatoes so darn cheesy and again seasoned perfectly. This foodie felt like she died and went to heaven. I don't think I've had such a delicious down home American style meal ever. You better darn sure bet next time I'm in town, I'll be back more!!! read more

Really quiet hometown cooking like your Maw-maw use to make and environment as it should be. Loved it.

I love this place. The people are nice. The food is good and fresh. They have regional favorites--corn mush and bread pudding. I had a rib eye and egg breakfast, it was so nostalgic it almost made me weep. And, oh baby, the homemade pies--I made up a new song for them. Yummy, yummy, yummy, Mr. Pie, get down in my tummy. You taste so good to me. All I wanna do is feel your deliciousness on my taste buddies and start a flavor party in me. read more

Always on the lookout for diners at breakfast time, I pretty much chose Downtown Diner because it had the word "Diner" in the name. Also because I didn't really want to go to Cracker Barrel. Located almost next door to the train station, this is a pretty typical diner. Not the good old fashioned silver-sided building, but a plain storefront. I was hoping for more of a varied breakfast menu seeing as how this place does bill itself as a diner, and most diners have huge selections of breakfast items including all kinds of "combo" plates. This place doesn't really offer that -- they have a basic menu of meat (ham, steak, sausage) with two eggs, they have four omelet choices, and then they have pancakes and some waffles. The "Specials" board also offered four different "skillets" which were the same four omelets on the menu, but in skillet form instead of omelet form. Oh and of course they have biscuits and gravy. I had a "ham steak" and eggs (ordered mine over easy), hash browns, and toast (white, wheat, or rye). It was pretty good. The ham steak was decent sized, but thin, and the eggs were cooked just fine, and the hash browns were OK. Toast came buttered and with a couple little plastic box thingies of jelly. Coffee was on the weak side (but then again I'm used to very strong coffee, so pretty much any restaurant coffee is too weak for me). The one thing I didn't have, but looked amazing, were the pies. Chocolate cream pie, coconut cream pie, etc. looked really good and I think they're all made there. They also had some fruit pies that looked good. I may have to go back for the pie experience... All in all, I feel that it was a good choice. I was supporting a local business which I like to do, rather than going to a big chain restaurant, and the food was pretty much what I was expecting. My biggest disappointment was the lack of a bigger/more varied menu. But I say if you're in Mattoon at breakfast time, the Downtown Diner is a good bet. read more

My daughter and I enjoyed lunch at Downtown Diner. We had beef and noodles with green beans that were as good as my Grandmother used to make. The salad selection was just ok, but this isn't really the place for health food :-) We followed our meal with a slice of the BEST coconut cream pie I have ever eaten in my life! I should also mention that the service was excellent! read more

This review is for breakfast. My wife and I are new to the area and on occasion we like to have breakfast out so we started scouting the area for a new go to place. Of course there is the Cracker Barrel down the road, but we find those type of places too commercial, crappy food and rather expensive. So what brought me to the Downtown Diner were my fellow Yelpers. We arrive at the Diner around 8:30 AM, on a Saturday, so perhaps a bit early for the morning rush, as we were seated promptly and our waitress was extremely friendly & quick. She made sure our drinks never got close to being empty! The menu had a good number of items to choose from and kept it simple, hash browns, eggs sunny side up, sausage, and toast. Yea, it's easy, but as most of you know, there are a lot of places which can good this up big time. But not here at the Downtown Diner. Nothing was overly greasy, or dry. I do like a little grease, and it was just right here. The sausages were really good, the eggs cooked perfectly and the has browns were good and at the right temperature too! The Diner it kind of large, and a lot of cool things hanging about to look at... several items caught my attention enough here I had to go and take a closer look. My wife and I really enjoyed our first visit and I'm sure we will be back ! In fact, I do plan on coming here and giving the Downtown Diner a try for Lunch & Dinner as well. read more

Dined on a Sunday when their specialty is a buffet. Unfortunately we arrived near closing, and the buffet was basically over. Service was very slow to acknowledge our arrival (e.g. 12-15 mins) - focused on cleaning tables, yet still accepted multiple new customers. Food was okay. The buffet may have been good? Not excited to revisit anytime soon. read more

This place is average on its best days. I always leave unimpressed, and I have been there enough times to get a good feel for the menu, wait staff, etc. I grew up with homemade meals daily, I think the people that love this place must have grown up on microwave dinners. It's only upside is the lack of options in Mattoon, so that puts it past two stars. Food - Bland, lacks flavor and seems "old". Service - Slow, very talkative and distracted. Atmosphere - Crowded tables, confined. Pies - Decent, good enough. read more

I love this place. One of my favorite things in the world are fried oysters and my goodness they make some good ones, hand battered and made to order. My husband and I often go here for dinner because I can hardley cook a homeade meal for what we can eat here for. Many people have tried to open a restaurant in this same location and these folks have manged to pull it off and suceed . The food is good the prices fare and the owners really seem to care about the quality that goes out of the kitchen. I would say I am very picky and If I give this a thumbs up that says a lot. read more
