Well, let me start by saying, this is not the standard. I would have given five stars (at least 4) any other time we've been here. We have probably frequented this establishment about 25-40 times. Over the years it's been solidly standout. However, today was the exception. I will say it was a bit busy, but no wait. Most of the tables were full, but we got seated right away. Service was a bit slow to start but that's understandable, as it was hopping. After the initial meet the server, she was quite timely. However, still love the place, and everyone has off days. The food here was awful. The pasta was extremely watery and flavorless. The bread was plain. I enjoyed the stuffed mushrooms only because the sauce tasted like my favorite soup from the grocery store (it tasted too familiar). Luigis is a local Italian favorite in Mattoon, IL. They provide free homemade bread rolls, which are pretty tasty. It's even tastier when dipped in their Olive Oil, Garlic, and Basil sauce (aka "OGB"). If you're a fan of raw garlic and bread, then make sure you order the "OGB" cause you won't be disappointed. Their pizza is alright, could be cooked a little bit more as the dough in the center was not as crispy. Kids spaghetti was pretty much standard and generic. Next time, I plan on ordering an entree dish. For the longest time, they only accepted cash, but they now accept credit card. read more

If you live here you may already know about this place, but if you are traveling on I-57 or if you are stopping for the night in Mattoon, IL, then get you a little cash and get ready for a treat. Yes, you need cash because the sign on the door still says "cash or check only " when we ate there in July 2018. The bread that came out after we were seated was a little stale and chewy instead of the soft bread we've gotten at many Italian restaurants these days, but it just didn't matter once the entree was presented. Luigi's knows it's way around a variety of sauces and I can't imagine any of them will not be a delight. We tried two: Tortellini Alla Panna in a cream sauce with a touch of marinara and Chicken Albanese in a brandy cream sauce and they were both very rich and so delicious. The salad that is included with the meal was fresh and I enjoyed their house dressing. Menu prices seem very reasonable with many choices at $10 and a lot of others at $12-13. The portions are generous and my wife blew my mind by taking about half of her Tortellini Alla Panna back to the hotel and reheating it in the microwave the next morning for breakfast! I think she really liked it. The interior is comfortable with booths and tables. Service was very attentive and friendly. Parking is curbside as they are located downtown. If I lived here this would have to be a regular weekly treat of exploring all that their menu has to offer. read more

We stopped here for a late lunch and the food was fantastic! DH had spaghetti with OBG and I had Chicken Piccata. My only complaint was a little too much capers, but I just ate around them. Unbelievable! We thought we give it another try. Bad choice! When you enter, you are welcomed with a terrible smell of musk. They had one waiter who basically done it all.. he run his bottom off. My spaghetti was a five out of ten.. by a.n Italian sauce in store and dump on your noodles. My husband's food looked look me a watered down version of nothing.. the price was outrages . Sorry, Mattoon needs something to be proud off, this is not a place where you get food to satisfy .. the bread is the most valuable item they have. If you want Italian go to Angelo's it's much cheaper . Sorry Luigi's .. you need to have reliable people in the kitchen, more waitstaff on the floor if you want to be successful . Overall wonderful experience. You wouldn't know from the street that this place has the best food in Coles County, maybe more. It's pretty sparsely decorated on a concrete floor. The harried young lady who took care of us really was an all star on an understaffed crew. My wife and I shared side salads and bread with the OGB sauce (olive oil, garlic, and basil sauce, which includes onions and bell peppers) as a first course. Such a simple, seemingly obvious to make bread sauce was amazing. They nailed it. Savory, peppery and acidic with capers, a tinge of sweet from the peppers, I want to recreate that. Doubt I'd get anywhere close. My wife had chicken parmigiana as the main course and I had their Bellissimo special that you'll find up there in the pictures. Wherever their sauce recipes came from should be in the sauce Hall of fame. They are unbelievable. Light enough, but it brings the rest of your food together in an awesome way. My wife and I were both blown away. The portions are large and you can take the rest home for seconds, which should be mandatory. Only gripe- they don't have a full bar. Just some beer and house wines, and that was really the only missing part of the experience. We'll be back just for the sauce. 5/5 read more

The gluten feee was decentish - I had the gluten free shrimp Alfredo however the Alfredo sauce was runny as oppose to thick and creamy. The Italian sausage appetizer was good but a bit too salty. Where to start...Luigi's is one of our absolute favorite places to eat, whether it is just two of us, or an entire crowd. They service is outstanding, everyone is always friendly and efficient, the food is amazing, like a little glimpse into the flavors of Italy. No matter what you order on the menu, it will be a winner. Even something as mundane as a cheese pizza is out of the world. And the bread and the OGB olive oil (you must ask for the oil) is totally AMAZING. I could make a meal out of the bread and that heavenly oil. Their house dressing is a tomato based vinaigrette that is delicious. A little bit of sweet and a little bit of heat. I would highly recommend this place for lunch or dinner. They do not know the first thing about a time cooking here. They are cooking classic dishes yet they are unrecognizable. They're substituting something ridiculous for classic Italian cuisine. I saw the pizza it looked normal but I ordered veal marsala and it was unrecognizable. In fact, when it came to my table I said no no I think there's a mistake. I ordered veal marsala the waitress was not sure if that's what it was. She went and asked the chef who came out. He was a young Mexican male and he said what's wrong? I told him I ordered veal marsala I don't know what this is. He told me that was veal marsala. This may have been veal but it was sliced up and served in pasta which had a red sauce that tasted like SpaghettiOs. It was absolutely disgusting I could not stomach to eat it even though I tried. It did not even taste like it had Marsala wine which is the majority ingredient in the recipe. The sauce itself is essentially a Marsala wine reduction. They asked me if I wanted something else and so I started questioning other items on the menu and showing them pictures of something like cacciatore which was whole pieces in a casserole of tomatoes and peppers and red wine. The waitress said no ours is plain grilled chicken breast sliced over pasta which has a sauce of tomatoes peppers and onions. Again this was not cacciatore I would like to invite them to let me come in the kitchen and cook all these dishes for them and teach them what true authentic Italian food is. It saddens me when I read a review that said finally authentic Italian food in Mattoon Illinois. There's nothing about this that is neither authentic or Italian unless you count the fact that it actually has pasta. Which by the way the menu lies and says in all the dishes we are homemade spaghetti pasta or our homemade linguine pasta none of the pasta serve was homemade. It was all dry pasta. Which isn't a bad thing but don't advertise on the menu that it's all made. Personally I don't like homemade pasta It's usually soft. I prefer dried pasta from the box. read more

This is my favorite Italian spot in Mattoon. I love the red sauce flavor. We hadn't been there for a few months and decided to stop in for lunch. My husband had the chicken parmigiana and I had spinach ravioli. The meal began with delicious, warm bread and followed by a salad included in the special. I love the house dressing as it has a hint of horseradish. The main courses were very pleasing. The chicken was very fresh and took a little longer to cook than some dishes. No complaints as we were not in a hurry. My suggestion is try this place. The take only cash or check and do have an ATM. We all like a bit different flavor in Italian food. This place takes the #1 spot for me in Mattoon. read more
