I will never go back to Downtown Diner. We had to wait over 30 minutes for our food. It was not even crowded. The customers across from us ordered 2 steaks and they had them way before we even had our food. The waitress was excellent and it was not her fault. When we went to pay our bill we complained to the owner and all he could say is we are doing our best. His attitude was so bad. It was like he didn't even care. He is an ASSHOLE!!!!!! The food here is pretty good. I would steer clear of the breakfast buffet they usually don't keep it very well stocked and some of the items on it taste a little old. If you do go get one of the skillets they're very tasty. I've never had anything but breakfast here so I can't review anything else. read more

Decent diner food. With a limited choice of restaurants in Mattoon, we decided to try a local diner, because in small towns, these types of restaurants are usually the best. We went for lunch and it was bustling. My husband had the clam chowder, which we both agreed is one of the best chowda's we had and could compete with any chowda from the East Coast. He also had the clam strips - a bit overcooked, but still good. I had a patty melt and fried pickles - patty melt was good, but the pickles were extremely salty. They need to either change the pickle that they are using, or cut down on any seasoning in the batter. Wanted to try some pie, but we were both stuffed by the time we were done with lunch. Good portions and a good selection on the menu. May return for dinner. read more

Stopped here to meet my brother for breakfast when we were both in the area traveling for business...breakfast was excellent! The sausage was very well made...not in house, but delicious nonetheless. At least it wasn't frozen, pressed patties. I prefer a more robust cup coffee, so was a little disappointed. A small investment in a bit better coffee would easily make this 5 stars in my opinion. read more

Downtown Diner can't be beat. The food is always excellent and the wait staff is is exceptional. Prices are very reasonable. We moved to the area from Los Angeles, CA where we were surrounded by wonderful restaurants but never had a place like Downtown Diner that was consistently good and very affordable. The owners wife makes all their pies which are beyond delicious. They've got a great thing going in our little town. Love it! read more

Food is fairly decent. The buffet has a good selection however... the owner is the biggest dick in Mattoon restaurant history. He literally calls customers who go to the buffet for seconds "fat f#!@ers". This day that I am writing this review the owner literally threw a cup of coffee on a customer. EMS had to be called. The wait staff there is great but the owner is a pos and does not deserve to own a restaurant. read more

The guys at Pilson Motors recommended this place when I was there to buy a new Mustang (I'll be reviewing Pilson Motors after I get my new car but so far they're great). The coffee at Downtown Diner was delicious. I gulped down three cups before my food even arrived. I had a meat omlette with bacon in it. Very good. The hash browns were also quite good. My car salesman recommended their stuffed French Toast and their sausage patties, so I ordered them, too. Excellent. The sausage patty had great flavor, though it was a bit thin. The hostess/waitress was friendly and effecient. There were many local regulars there at the time. Seems they all knew each other and the staff and everyone was friendly and cordial. It was obvious that this was a favorite spot for locals. I will have more business with Pilson in the weeks ahead and plan to stop in the Downtown Diner on those occasions. read more

Stopped here on our way back up from a weekend camping and kayaking on Lake Shelbyville and had a really good late lunch. The buffet included, among other things, fried chicken (delicious and juicy without being greasy), barbecued ribs, turkey and stuffing, and tasty chicken noodles (you know you're in Pennsylvania Dutch country, even in Illinois, when chicken noodles are on the menu!) I noticed that the carrots were cooked the way I do them myself (simmered with a little butter and sugar, tender but not mushy) and my husband had two helpings of the green beans with bacon and onions. Good comfort food, cooked well, in a cheery, homey atmosphere. And their coffee is great, too. It's nice to know this place exists! read more

The Pork Steak with mushroom gravy was melt in your mouth tender and delicious. I also enjoy their pies. They are all great.

I used to be a very loyal customer of this restaurant until today. I order a chicken sandwich and it was so overcooked I couldn't chew it. I sent it back and got the same chicken back! So tough! I was late for work because it took them over 30 minutes to bring me my over cooked food so I told my waitress just to forget about it. She takes our check and says, I'll see what I can do about this...comes back and says the owner wont do anything and I have to pay for it! I was appalled! I asked to speak to him, but she says he told her he was too busy running a restaurant to come speak to his upset customer. Not once during our visit was I rude or demanding. I was forced to pay for garbage I didn't even eat. I don't know how he can even get away with it! He is the most rude, disrespectful person I have ever known. I wouldn't go back if someone paid me to. Customer service should be a priority, and his is about making that extra dollar. read more

My husband and I always look forward to our trips to Illinois. The #1 reason is the Downtown Diner. It is absolutely the best place to eat as we did Thanksgiving Day! The china plates used to serve our food on was incredible and made us feel like we were at my grandmother's house instead of a restaurant. Of course, we are always amazed by the warm, friendly atmosphere and the undeniable fabulous service we receive each time we visit the diner. The owners always make us feel special and if we could we would eat every meal there. I wish they would start a franchise here in the south. Whoever says that southern cooking is better than northern surely hasn't eaten at this restaurant. It has really spoiled us because it's home cooking at it's finest. And the pies are out of this world! I would highly recommend this diner and if you haven't tried it yet, you are missing out on the best tasting food around. Did the buffet today for the first time. As I was eating mashed potatoes, I hit something big and rubbery with my fork. I pulled it out and it was something disgusting. Black and rubbery and about the size of a quarter only it ...was oval in shape. Told the waitress and she told me it was a gristle. I looked at her and I said "in my mashed potatoes?" She looked at it and said "I don't know then." I shoved my plate over to her and said "you can take this because I'm done." To which she replied, "I'll take it to the kitchen and see if they can tell me what it is." Well a couple of minutes later, she rushed by our table with a bus cart tub and said "I'm sorry about that ma'am." and off she went. Never to stop back by again. Made me wonder if she was afraid to tell me what the unidentified object was. GROSS! So, I go up to the cash register to pay and I told the lady there about my experience and she said "oh".
