We ordered fried green beans as an appetizer and they were great- lightly breaded and tasty with ranch to dip them in. 4 stars because we didn't get appetizer plates and refills were slow to come. Hey all. Wifey and I are back again. This time we are reviewing Stadium Grill in Mattoon, IL. Very clean place. Ample parking, easy in/out on IL 16, right next to I-57. I ordered the Shrimp Po Boy with Mac and cheese. Wifey got the Mango Chicken and Shrimp Salad. And, M-I-L is with us today and she got the Club sandwich. We will start with the MIL club. She gives it an A-. It did not get an A because, while the toasted bread was great, it made the ham on the sandwich hot, and she does not prefer that. Still, an A- is very good. The Mac n Cheese side (we all three got them) needed to be done a little more in my estimation. There was a little too much liquid and the cheese was pretty runny. But Wifey and M-I-L both loved it for the exact same reason, so go figure. (We are right and he is wrong, Wifey says.) On to my Po Boy. It was a little under flavored. I like the restaurant, but I won't get this again. Wifey's salad was delicious and I have to admit I was having food envy. It looked so good. It called for marinated chicken and blackened shrimp but she wanted the chicken blackened as well and that was the right call. I am pretty certain I will be getting be this on our next visit. I am about to finish up with dessert. Getting a raspberry cheesecake with an ice cream side car (of course). The sidecar of vanilla was a perfect addition to the dessert. Cheesecake was a thin slice, but it was quite worth it. Overall, I was a bit disappointed with my sandwich, but everything else was quite tasty. As for the history of this place, back in the day it received many unfavorable reviews which kept us from coming for a while. But living in the area we eventually tried it. Well, they either had a Major shakeup, or the prior bad experiences got repaired because we have been coming for years now and have never had a bad experience. So if you see those old reviews, don't let that dissuade you. We believe you will really like the place. read more

Was not expecting much but was pleasantly surprised. I'm not a food snob but o like good food no matter where it comes from. We order drinks and 4 apps. The nachos, fried green beans, fried Monterey Jack balls and potato skins. All were very good. Each with their own flavors. Went well with a margarita. After 4 apps I was kinda full but wanted to try the chicken and shrimp salad with mango and tomatoes and lime dressing. The lettuce was definitely from a bag which is one of my pet peeves. Why buy bagged lettuce? The shrimp were very small and the chicken was grilled. Was not a huge salad. It was good and the dressing was very good. Spacious place with friendly service. Basic menu of grill favorites. While I had a decent meal, Stadium Grill really didn't set itself apart. A few issues with service. Menu lists soup of day. When asked what it was, server responded with the other two soups listed on the menu. That's fine, but would have been more transparent to just mention there was no daily soup selection, but the other listed soups were still available. Also presumed I wanted the soup as my side, when in fact I wanted the soup as an extra, so no side of fries for me. Standard big beers on draft with only one craft brew. Sandwich was decent, but lackluster and more fitting of a fast food joint, or humble diner. My expectations from a pub/grill are for entrees with character and presentation, something worth sitting and savoring. But, this sandwich just didn't do it. Bare minimum reached. Likewise, the potato soup was serviceable, but cafeteria caliber. My hunch is that there's price-point protection at play, or an attempt to keep things simple in the kitchen, but there needs to be something on the plate to distinguish this grill from the places with fast food windows carved into the walls. And that might be worth charging a couple extra bucks. read more

Passing through staying at a hotel real close. We wanted some appetizers, beer and football before calling it a night. Food was really good. Our sever was horrible. The servers did not have name tags so I cannot give the credit to whom it belongs. She took our order and brought us a second beer long after we needed one. The other servers were visible busy on the floor. I have no idea where ours was disappearing to. We had to ask another server for our bill. Chicken Alfredo with broccoli and carrots. The broccoli and carrots are cooked perfectly, done to perfect texture but not mushy or crunchy. The Alfredo sauce is very cheesy but not heavy or too rich, a perfect balance of flavor and seasoning that blends well with blackened chicken. The noodles are finished with finesse, not al-dente and not over-done. The garlic bread is lightly buttered with a light garlic flavor and does not overpower the meal. This is a top choice for me. Last week I had the Smokehouse burger minus onion straws and added onions. This is also a top choice on my list. I would recommend stopping in and trying the menu! read more

Ordered the Sirloin steak with Green Beans and a baked potato. Only thing worth eating was the steak. It was cooked correctly (for me medium rare) and seasoned just right. Otherwise the green beans were cold and the baked potato was half baked and unappetizing. My granddaughter ordered the Chicken Alfredo that was basically some watered down bland Alfredo sauce over penne pasta with broccoli and carrots. Totally bland. The blackened chicken was dry (not even sure it was supposed to be blackened) and so so. 3.5 rating just because the steak was alright. read more

My girlfriend and I wen't to stadium grill for an easy meal, and were entirely disappointed. Our waitress was kind but didnt know how to waitress. She took our order leaving the appetizer out, we then requested for our appetizer to be put on our ticket. 20 minutes later our food was brought out...no appetizer. After asking for our appetizer a third time she brought it; it was cold. yum. I also sat without a drink for a nice 30 minutes. Our food was good besides the mashed potatoes which were cold and had a hint of chemical flavor. We thought maybe freezer burnt. Food tasted good, service was horrible! My husband had to walk to the bar to get his own crackers and refills. We sat for 26 minutes without anyone checking on us. When we asked to speak to the manager and the waitress was addressed she said "That's not my problem!" The rest of the house staff proceeded to stare and laugh, some even visited with their friends at a table near us and told the whole story laughing and looking at us. I would not recommend this place unless you enjoy being the entertainment for the restaurant. The manager did come to the table and apologized offering a free entree for our next visit which we declined and will never be going back. I had the buffalo wrap which was pretty delicious. I wish they would leave out the ranch inside of the wrap since it was becoming soggy and draining out the sides. It came with ranch dipping sauce which I liked a lot more. Fries were alright but wanted more crispy. My husband got the shrimp and chicken tenders. I tried the shrimp and it was pretty good. It was, instead a flavorless beef patty, chopped into chunks and placed on a tough bun topped with scant grilled onions, mushrooms and two cheese slices. No part of it was good or even edible, but more importantly, it was not steak. This, from a place that makes pretty good steaks. Disappointed. I've been going here for years and I always considered it the best place around until now. Recently this establishment has changed their menu, higher prices, understaffed with servers and the quality of food has gone downhill. My bypass burger was as dry as someone's crusty underwear and fry portions got way smaller. The music changed and the TV's were on the news. This place has always been known for country music and sports. There were other issues with food but would be a novel. This place was great! I was passing through for one night and it was close to my hotel. I ordered a ribeye and shrimp. The steak was seasoned perfect for my taste and was cooked a perfect medium rare. I sat at the bar because I was alone and the service was top notch. I couldn't be happier. I went in for a quick bite and needed to get out. Unfortunately, I went during the lunch hour. The place is nicely decorated. Typical grill style. Plenty of TV's to keep you up to date on latest sports. The menu had a decent amount of items. I went with a lunch special (Maui Chicken Wrap) that was grilled chicken breast, lettuce, cheese & what tasted more like Honey Mustard than anything else. Came with 1 side for $6.99. People I was with had the Philly Cheese steak and the Burger. Both looked appetizing. Sadly, I didn't get any samples. :( I had to wait a bit for the food to come out. This was the third time in the last year we have gone to the Stadium Grill. The first time we went, the service was adequate, but the food was horrible. We are understanding, and realize everyone has a bad day on occasion. The second time we went, we were seated at a table by the hostess and received our drinks within approximately five minutes. That was the only time we saw a server & no one ever asked if we've been waited on. After 25 minutes, we flagged someone down from the kitchen in order to pay for our drinks & left. Tonight, January 25, 2020, we were invited to dinner by some friends who were celebrating their anniversary. They chose Stadium Grill. We agreed, thinking that maybe we had just gotten unlucky and hit on two bad nights. Tonight only confirmed that not only is the restaurant poorly managed, but the server was incompetent and the food is still horrible. It started out fine. Shortly after being seated, we were served drinks. We chose to place our appetizer order and our dinner order at the same time to avoid the server having to come back-and-forth. As soon as the appetizers were brought, we knew we weren't in for a pleasant experience. From the ranch dressing that could've passed for 2% milk, to the cold potato skins, none of us had high expectations. A short time later, our dinners were brought out. All...but one. MINE! Three of the dinners were very simple. Steak. Medium rare. Steamed vegetables. And a baked potato. The other two dinners were ribs/pulled pork and a plain cheeseburger with fries. Once the food runner placed all the plates on the table and realized that one individual didn't have a plate in front of them,she politely asked if there was something she was missing. I informed her my entire dinner was M.IA. Approximately five minutes later, our server came out and informed me that my dinner was now being prepared. To their credit this mishap was remedied quickly. A medium rare steak, steamed vegetables, and a baked potato were brought out within 10 minutes. However, my steak was chewy, cold in the center and, in my opinion, poorly cut. It is not very often that I leave a big portion of my steak on my plate, but I did not finish my meal. The potato was also cold and the steamed vegetables were barely warm to the touch. To make this long drawn out story even longer, not one person, in our party of 5, finished their meal. Even the 12-year-old boy, who eats everything, left half a cheeseburger. Our server then came back to the table to refill drinks, but evidently forgot what I was drinking, and proceeded to fill my glass of Sprite with water. We each then received our bills. Two couples. Two bills. We both paid with a credit card. When the server returned with our bills to sign, the other couple noticed that their bill had changed. After looking at both of the bills, we discovered that they were BOTH charged to my credit card and their bill was higher than the original ticket showed. I immediately asked to see a manager, who apologized and advised he would fix the bills. After a considerable wait, our tickets were returned by our server, who apologized for the mixup. The manager did discount both of our bills, but after this experience, we will NEVER go to the Stadium Grill again, nor would I recommend the Stadium Grill to anyone in the future. read more

Ate here last night and I always find myself coming back! Great atmosphere with tv's everywhere. The waiter was kind and knew a lot about the food. The food was always delicious! The pepper jack cheese curds had exquisite taste and I'm certain most would enjoy them. Excellent display left much to be desired though. Chicken strips were solid, very raisin canes esq. fries top of the line when it comes to Mattoon, Illinois cuisine. Price wise you will be looking at spending a pretty penny for one meal. Waitress was very helpful, and overall my personal experience at this establishment was nothing short of positive remarks. The atmosphere was an odd combination of sporty & country with a large majority of the customers being 50+. Our server was extremely informal and hard to catch. We were not needy; just desiring boxes and a check for more than 20 mins. The food was very basic and bland, but not inedible. Attempt #2 was a lunch date with my child and mother. Once again, the service was beyond informal and awkward. Our food was timely, but was consistent with my first experience. Tonight I talked my husband to go back to stadium grill restaurant! We had the most god awful experience two years ago! I ordered a martini gin a special kind, came back pure gin not the kind I ask for I let it go back! I rank water! The beer selection is nada as well! We went to eat at Stadium before heading to the movies, because our fish-fry favorite place had an hour wait. I ordered the special NY Strip, and I was absolutely blown away by the flavor and quality of my meal! I've dined at some of the most expensive steak houses in Chicago, and honestly this strip was the best I've ever had. Good, friendly service and reasonable prices.
