I don't usually leave reviews, but Okura really deserves one. It's a bit farther than I normally drive for dinner, but lately I've found myself going more often--because I just feel good every time I'm there. The first time I went there was in 2009 on the recommendation of a friend who used to have a Japanese restaurant. With job changes, going back to school, and plunging headfirst into a turbulent new career with multiple job changes, I never got back there until 2022. And guess what? They remembered me! The staff is genuinely friendly. They remember what I like, and a few times I've described dishes that weren't on the menu--and they made them perfectly. They actually listen, and that level of care is rare. The wine and beer selection fits my tastes really well, which is a nice bonus. Every time I visit, the atmosphere is happy and relaxed. I often see other customers come in and get greeted like old friends, and it's clear this place means something to a lot of people. It's not just a meal--it's a place that lifts your mood. Okura has been in Hockhessin for years. We've sampled it a number of times over those years. Our recent takeout order managed to hit a whole, new level of inedible. "Gyoza" that were fried wontons with nothing inside them. A thin, rice noodle dish that was noodles boiled in water, unspiced, with fragments of veggies, and tiny tasteless boiled shrimp. There were others similarly taseless dishes. All, however, had been cooked with excessive cheap oil, that left nasty puddles in the bottom of the takeout containers. For some reason, Hockessin seems to attract purveyors of the absolute worst in Asian cuisine. read more

So much disappointed with this restaurant. Ordered for a take out dinner on Tuesay and food was not that fresh. For the price of Sushi and sashimi combo was reasonable but tuna was not fresh and I could even tell from its color. I ordered Monty roll which included unfresh tuna but the sauce was okay. For those that live south of Philadelphia along the I95 corridor there are numerous sushi options, but for the most part they are hit or miss. Good fish one time questionable the next, etc. Okura consistently has great service at the sushi bar, good price points, large cuts of sushi/sashimi, and quality fish. We reserved one of the private rooms for my daughter's birthday. Upon our arrival, the hostess told us that they did not write the reservation down and gave the rooms away to a party of 16 people. Clearly they knew about the reservation, but yet wanted this larger party to occupy both rooms. None of the owners or managers came up and apologized although we could see them go up to all the other tables. even though the food was good, we were treated differently than other customers. read more

Such a great place! We were welcomed as old friends after only our first visit to Okura. And though we are not frequent guests, the welcome is always genuine. The sushi is fresh, and you can watch it being made if you want. More often, I sit and sample the sake flight while I wait. There is no hurrying here; if you want to sit and chat before ordering another course, that's perfectly fine. The atmosphere is laid back. Here are a couple of suggestions if you are wondering where to begin with the very big menu. An appetizer I always enjoy is called Hamachi Carpaccio, thinly sliced yellowfin, beautifully presented. The only problem is, it is gone in no time!! But that is about the exact time the sushi rolls will come out. Try the Crunchy Tuna, or the Volcano Roll - or both. I haven't tried anything I did not enjoy. If you have time and appetite for dessert, keep your chopsticks handy for the Elvis Roll - a sliced banana, peanut butter, chocolate syrup and vanilla ice cream concoction I cannot imagine ever coming up with! Delicious. And the Elvis Roll might just use up all the calories you saved by having sushi. So next time, try to resist! read more

Stopped by the area and found this little gem I've been craving sushi for a while & this place was so good! The sushi tastes super fresh, employees are super nice, and OMG THE TEMPURA ICE CREAM!!! I usually don't like fried ice cream because it just smells bad and tastes weird but this place uses 4 pound cakes to wrap it around as the batter and then fry it so good! I also got the nabeyaki udon which overfilled because they put so much in it & I also got the spicy rainbow roll which gave me a variety of fish Price is on a decent side... not the cheapest but pretty fair. 9/10 would recommend this restaurant :) read more

Overall this is a decent option for sushi. We got gyoza (definitely not the best I've had, they appeared to have been deep fried and were quite crispy), cucumber salad (not great, and had low quality crab in it which I've never seen in a cucumber salad before), a yellowtail roll, sweet potato roll, and a few of the specialty rolls. All the rolls were good, not the best I've had. I'd also mention that the specialty rolls were on the smaller side, so you may need to order more than you might think. We ordered for pickup, they said 10-15 minutes, and it took about 25 to be ready. The hostess wasn't really taking initiative in helping us when we were picking up the food. read more

I would like to qualify my review here, as I've only just been here once. But thought the sushi and rolls from Okura are among some of the best I have had anywhere in U.S. Incredibly fresh, prepared masterfully and all the basics (presentation, service, etc...) to boot. As my buddy labeled this place, it truly is a hidden "gem" of many other mediocre sushi options in this area. The Red Dragon Roll, with 3 tuna preparations and plenty of zing from Sriachia was one of my favorites. Okura is the best sushi restaurant this side of Kyoto. Now, I hope you realize that's based on 0% factual evidence and 100% biased personal opinion, but if you're looking for a great all-around sushi experience, this is your place. They serve high quality fish, interesting and unique (but not weird) roll combinations, and you can't beat the prices. Kailon, the owner + sushi chef, is super friendly. Expect to strike up a convo if you sit at the sushi bar. I highly recommend the Hamachio carpaccio appetizer (thinly sliced yellowtail sitting in a bath of slightly spicy chili oil, with scallions, eel sauce and crunchy little roe on top), and the W.W. Roll. Don't ask me what's in this 2nd one, but it's tempura fried, covered in crab strips, and tastes like sushi heaven. The spicy tuna with cucumber wrap (instead of rice) is also worth a try -- the texture/temperature contrast is addictive. I've been to the fancy shmancy joints in NYC and Philly, and will continue to go for special occasions or a change of pace, but when my gut is aching for some broiled eel or tempura'd shrimp, Okura's where you'll find me. read more

Always fresh, and very extensive menu so your non sushi member will be satisfied as well. I ve been bringing my children here when they needed cheats ...lol. Amy and Kallon are good people. I am SUCH a huge fan of Okura, it's hard to know where to start! The sushi smells like the sea (as it's supposed to, people!), and is so buttery-soft in your mouth it makes it nearly impossible to stop eating even after you've had your fill. Starting with the appetizers, I strongly recommend the Vegetable Gyoza - steamed! Be prepared though, there are a lot of them so save some stomach space for your entree. The Miso Soup has a thick broth with a delicate mouth-feel. Note that if you don't really like the taste of miso, you should not order this. But man-oh-man is it delicious! And lastly, I rarely go in and not order the Edamame. It's steamed to perfection! The rolls are amazing, and there's something for everyone. Everyone! I'm having a love affair with the Dynamite roll at the moment, with it's caviar and spicy mayo, the Kamikaze roll, and the White Dragon - but the Kennett roll with it's special sauce shouldn't be overlooked. In all the many years we've been eating at Okura, we've literally never had even a sub-par experience, let alone a poor one. If I have on criticism, it's that, though the wine selection is comprehensive, none are particularly good. I mean, unless you LIKE Kendall Jackson, in which case you'll love all their vineyard selections. My friends and I... not so much. Luckily there's the full bar option to keep us happy. Pop in soon. First things first, as soon as we walked in the (alleged?) owner of the store greeted us...in Chinese. There was also a separate menu in Chinese, featuring Chinese dishes. This already set off some alarms, also the decor looked pretty outdated like you would find in any run-of-the-mill cheap chinese buffet place: dim yellow lighting and bright brown laminated tables and dividers. Looked much nicer in the photos on Yelp. The stuff we ordered ranged from bad to mediocre. We got a sashimi appetizer, some seafood udon combination, and I had the dinner bento box. The only thing I legitimately liked was the salmon sashimi/sushi. The bento box came with the standard miso soup and salad, assorted tempura, steak teriyaki, 2 shumai, and a 3-piece sushi sampler, and some bean sprouts. The bean sprouts were soggy and far from crisp, and the steak was tough and drowned in a puddle of teriyaki sauce. Tempura batter was a little on the thick/heavy side and the shumai was fairly average. I didn't taste much of the seafood udon, but it was incredibly sour and the presentation looked awful, there was a puddle of reddish soup near the bottom and one of the scallops tasted flavorless. There's a chance that we ordered all the wrong stuff and didn't get to experience the best this restaurant has to offer, but I don't see myself returning for a very long time. If I learned anything from eating here, it's to stick to ordering sushi rolls only from this place. read more

Okura catered the sushi bar at my husband's party at Hotel DuPont. Nigiri were super fresh and included yellowtail, salmon, tuna and shrimp (all equally delicious). Maki cut to order included basics like Cali Roll and Salmon/Avo as well as Spider (Softshell Crab) and Shrimp Tempura rolls with fresh veggies. Wasabi and Ginger were artfully displayed like flowers. I could have skipped dinner altogether (but it was also divine) and blissfully grazed for hours (6:30 - 9 PM) on Okura Sushi. They cater! Have them cater your next party. Special! read more

Come for the mushroom smell in the parking lot; stay for the $2 Sriracha sauce. Normally I'm pretty easy on places where I like the food. I'll overlook things like restaurant decor, poor service, crumby bathrooms if the food is good. After all, that's why I'm going to a restaurant, the food. Well, the sushi at Okura was good. Not the best, but not bad by any stretch. The low rating here is due to two things; one totally unrelated to food. The parking lot of this place smelled like the inside of a mushroom house. Normally (in this area) you catch a whiff or two of that funky mushroom stink. This was the worst I've ever smelled. It actually turned my stomach before sitting down to eat. The other piece of the low rating was much more serious. My wife asked for a side of Sriracha sauce, and was told that it would be an additional $2!!!! For reference, an entire bottle costs about $3. My jaw dropped to the floor, fortunately I was facing away from our server. I can't stand getting these types of charges in any restaurant. The bill would have come to about $45 dollars (no alcohol) without the sauce added. Do you really need to add that $2?!? Is that going to keep your business afloat?! If so, your business model is terrible and needs some major revision. Overall, the place was actually nice inside and had good fresh sushi with decent service. The smelly air knocked it down 1 star, the $2 1oz serving of sauce took away the other two. read more
