I really wanted udon and this place fit the bill. The noodles were tossed in a flavourful sauce and served with fresh, large shrimp. We had crab Rangoon and vegetable spring rolls as apps and and both came out piping hot and were equally delicious. The spring rolls were the highlight for me and I will definitely get them each time we go. I also tried there creme brûlée which was okay. My boyfriend got the fried cheesecake which essentially was just tempura coated cheesecake that was fried and drizzled with chocolate sauce. read more

Ordered take out today and apparently they use a 3rd party order service, messed up multiple things on my order and mixed up gluten free food with breaded food. I asked multiple times if the one dish I ordered was prepared GF and they assured me it was. My girlfriend immediately got sick within minutes of her first bite, then I did as well. I was a chef for many years and I never get sick from eating. This leads me to believe 1. They served me old/bad meats, 2. They don't understand what gluten free means. This is our go to spot for sushi and hibachi style dinners. They Always have something nice to eat and the food is prepared is so elegantly. My must have is the Shrimp Pad Thai and I also love the coconut shrimp. Hubs always orders the Shrimp Tempura rolls and there are so many other great choices! Okini makes our date nights a hit. Average sushi place in the burbs. We had the octopus appetizer and a selection of traditional maki and sashimi. The octopus appetizer was nothing special as all it was was the frozen and rethawed sliced octopus that you would get in normal nigiri sushi, but that's not unexpected. Everything else was delicious but it seems like they have reduced the size of the fish they cut for sashimi since last time I was there. The rest of the sushi was just ok. I thought the seaweed on the maki was a little bit more chewy than what I usually have but everything was fresh and came out super quick. From sitting down to finishing everything (no alcohol) and paying took us 35 minutes. You can't get out of KFC that quickly some times. Overall a good sushi place but nothing too special. read more

Love this place! I normally do take out but decided to dine in this past visit. I was a little disappointed that the only Sushi Boat they had cost upwards of $50, but apart from that everything was great. The service was prompt, food tasted great, and it's BYOB. Based on the reviews I was pretty excited to check this place out! Finally, high quality sushi in good ole Downingtown! I ordered 4 pieces of eel, miso soup and a spicy tuna roll. Okay. The quality of the eel was not impressive, the portion was appropriate but it just didn't taste as good as I'm used to. It was extra chewy, I wouldn't order again. Also, the price. The spicy tuna roll, looked fluorescent, odd. The flavor was pretty bland. I did appreciate that the roll wasn't a rice party, so there's that. Finally, the price. $17.50. For my sushi alone. Absurd. Unfortunate experience at Okinii this week. We ordered takeout for 5 family members - 3 of which ordered the Chicken and Broccoli. The Chicken and Broccoli tasted and smelled like fish - all three of us agreed and could not eat our meals. We had to throw out the entire meal - which pains us to do as we do not like to waste food - it was just that BAD. We called Okinii to let them know that something seems off with the Chicken & Broccoli (for future customers sake) and we recieved a lot of doubt from the staff. We were on the phone for 25 minutes total between waiting for managers, back and forth negotiations, and arguing. The Okinii "Manager" wanted us to bring back our food so that they could inspect it, we said we were unable to do so because of the distance back and forth. We were not expecting free food from Okinii - we just thought with all of the trouble - they would be willing to listen and help make it right. The "Manager" said he could not do anything to comp our meals without talking to his Manager. After more discussions - we were then offered a giftcard which we declined (just have an overall bad taste in our mouths - no pun intended). Finally the "Manager" offered us 30% back on our entire bill (which was $75). This did not cover the 3 Chicken & Broccoli entress - but after 25 minutes on the phone - we did not care about the food or money anymore. To note - 2 members of our family did order the Chicken Teryaki and enjoyed it. Poor customer service that will keep us from coming back in the future. Super unfortunate. read more

Okinii has excellent sashimi. This is the first sushi I've had since my return from Japan. I was impressed with the soft and buttery flavor and mouthfeel of the salmon. The other sashimi was very fresh, some with better mouthfeel than others. Their rice was decent. I'd like a bit more sweetness and aroma, and no sesame seeds. For $21, it wasn't a terrible deal for 15 pieces of sashimi. Though I'd hesitate to come back here if Mino in Malvern were an option. This fish is a bit fresher and higher quality than Mino's however. Okinii is a good choice for mid-priced ($15-$25/pp) sushi. On a side note, I don't understand why so many local Japanese restaurants decorate their interior with cultured stone and recessed colored lighting. I never saw this once in Japan. read more

One and done here. The staff was very friendly and helpful when explaining a few menu items. Unfortunately, that's where it ended. I saw another review on Yelp saying that this restaurant's pricing was competitive. I'm not so sure about that. $85 for two people (Hibachi chicken and steak (x2), two sodas, two orders of lo mien noodles and a small desert (1). I've been to the Hibachi Grill many times and had similar meal for not nearly as much as that. The food itself was subpar and wasn't the greatest. The steak was very tough and fatty (we ordered medium well). The soda was flat and the desert was very small for the price. If I'm going to spend $85 for two dinners I'll dine elsewhere. read more

Found a bone in the salmon sashimi and it was too cold, almost frozen in the center; ice cold fish has no flavor, fats can't melt in your mouth. I noticed this restaurant in the storefront next to Patty's Place (across from Giant) and thought I'd check it out. We ordered hot green tea, a strawberry Ramune soda, the Lobster Rock n' Roll, edamame, and the steak and shrimp hibachi. My daughter is very into Japanese pop culture and we found it a bit odd that the server didn't know the brand name of the Japanese soda. When she ordered by name, he had no idea what she was talking about. But he was very sweet. The fried lobster roll had a LOT of breading. It had a really good flavor, but would have been even better with more meat and less batter. Finally, the hibachi was good. However it's much different coming from the kitchen vs. Being cooked in front of you. I can't think of the last time I had a more positive customer service experience, which definitely pushed my overall score up! Ari, the manager, and all of the servers were super attentive, polite and efficient. Ultimately, we would suggest coming here for the big beautiful, fresh sushi that is their main focus. Decent sushi. Best fish in immediate area. Hit this spot for lunch about once a week because it is close to work. Good lunch specials. My go to is sashimi lunch which comes with 15 nice sized pieces of sashimi. Fake crab is often one of the 5 varieties, but it is the better stuff and always fresh. The other 4 always fresh, tasty and more than fair cuts. Comes with miso soup and tasty sushi rice. Would give another 1/2 star for the rice here if I could. Its real sushi rice with a touch of vinegar. One of the few in ChesCo that do this. Don't know why suburban sushi places in area seldom do same, but appreciate this nice touch. I'm not sure where all these reviews are coming from, but I think some are fake or made up as this is nowhere near a 4.5 star restaurant. I say that as starting off, the decor and inside of Okinii is very nice - including the bathrooms and fresh flowers on the table. Good to see a different type of restaurant in the Thorndale/Downingtown area too. But the food, it is not good at all. - Starting off, the water is not filtered and I know this isn't a requirement, but it tastes really bad and had a chlorine smell. Green tea is good though. - Spicy tuna roll had small dark bits of something in it. It should all be uniform in color and we eat sushi a lot and never saw this before. See pic (sorry it was halfway through eating the rolls, but I wanted to document it and no filter or Photoshop was used to change the color). Wasabi was cold and in a hard triangle like it sat like this for the last week. -Spicy salmon roll, it is bright red/pink (almost neon and others mention this in their reviews too). It is not natural and we never saw this before. Flavor tasted off (not like old fish, but just something weird) - Chicken with broccoli, flavor of the sauce was very good, but all the chicken is a weird shape and looks like scraps or something. No piece is uniform and a lot of weird straggly edges and was a bit spongey. - Our 2nd entree for us was the Chicken pad Thai I understand this is a Japanese sushi/Chinese place mainly - but if they serve pad Thai, it should not taste like it came out of a freezer. The chicken is small thin pieces (1/2 inch wide by 2 inches) and different chicken completely from the chicken and broccoli above. These "chicken" strips were super soft, mushy and had no flavor. The dish was very sweet and had a tomato sauce flavor. Overall we had items from the Japanese side ( and sushi), the Chinese side (chicken and broccoli) and the Thai side (chicken pad Thai) and none were good. I think they need to focus on 1-2 types of food and do it well, as all of it was mediocre. We paid over $40 for all of this and did not feel it was a good value. We will not be back as this was not just the restaurant having an "off day" when all their food is this bad. If you don't believe me, go there and order the same dishes and I am sure you will experience the same. read more

We went here for takeout for the first time ever last night. We placed an order from their website for shrimp and broccoli, shrimp lo mein and vegetable tempura at 7:02 pm requesting that it be available ASAP which was the default option for when you wanted it on their website. We got there at 7:34 and they had us immediately pay and said, "It will be a few more minutes". The dining room was about 1/3 full but the employees were literally running around so I guess they were short staffed for the day after Christmas. At 8:00 pm I went to the host and asked how we're doing on timing. He sent someone back to the kitchen who said, "Five more minutes" and I had a flash back to when I used to watch Seinfeld. They had two parties of about ten people in the dining room and I think that was just killing their kitchen. One of the people in the large parties went to the kitchen to complain everyone in his party was almost done eating and he hadn't been served his coconut shrimp yet. 8:12 PM and my food came out an hour and ten minutes after I ordered it. I was a little hangry and figured they were not going to get a good review but after getting it home the food was actually really good so here we are at four stars. read more

The chicken was rubbery and not even the right consistency. Honestly I'm having trouble believing it was even chicken. The broccoli was so over cooked it was mushy. The rice had a very burnt smell and extremely unappetizing taste. My $47 in food went straight into the trash. I ate cereal for dinner and it was much better. Terrible. read more
