Cheese burger

Update on Okata Bento today for lunch decided to pass by the establishment if there was a meter parking I would stop . Luckily right in front of Bank of Hawaii there was a parking so I parked . I ordered a cheeseburger for my wife and a mini chicken Oyako Donburi. I loved their Donburi very plain which is good only onions, mushroom, eggs and of course the chicken Katsu on top . The sauce was not too sweet just right how I like it . My wife said the cheeseburger was very good she said old school type of homemade beef patty little crispy on the end. The bun also crispy left on the flat top grill for a few seconds. The sauce was all mixed in . Just a reminder cash only and if you're in a rush this place is not for you . It's a one man show the owner cooks on the grill and takes your order . He also cooks made to order so it takes a little longer . Also parking can be a hassle if there's no metered parking available you'll need to park in the municipal parking across the street . Support local

I found out about this place back when they were slinging $2 burgers but inflation has finally caught and now they sell $5.25 cheeseburgers if you add tomatoes for $.75 and another $.75 for onions you have a $6.75 cheeseburger. I added a macaroni salad which I think was a 4 oz Mac salad that costs $2.50 for maybe 4 bites The burger was good, not spectacular but good. It was a bit pricey for what you get but it is cooked fresh and hot. If I'm in the area and just a snack, I would support small businesses and drop in to order some food. This is a take-out only restaurant and has no where to sit and ate.

I sadly came to find Bento Box Closed today. after reading reviews I was excited to have the experience for myself. I can not post without giving a Star rating so I find myself leaving a 3 cuz I can't really in good conscience comment other than I was excited to come & now sadly disappointed. But I look forward to my return

The OG spot for bentos on waialae (no joke, they've been around for 40+ yrs!) whenever I'm in the area, love to grab tonkatsu or teri-burger and head to the beach to enjoy. Remember to bring cash, as they are a cash only establishment - there is a FBH across the street so you can always pull out cash at the atm.

Best ever. Been coming here since 80s. Everything food wise is the same. Have patience, Lyndon is a one man cooking show. Well worth the wait.

My friend and I used to explore the Bay Area for good burgers. We're not looking for any fancy burger where you add a ton of toppings/sauces and the calorie count is like a million after everything. What we enjoy is a good old fashioned burger or cheeseburger (doubles/triples). Nothing like an old school burger because of the beefy taste of the patty. He recently came to Hawai'i to visit and raved to me about the burger/cheeseburger he had last visit to Hawai'i. As he was describing where he got it from, I didn't have a clue on what he was talking about. He also didn't recall the name of the restaurant. After he searched for it and found Okata Bento, I was shocked I didn't know this place existed. Okata Bento is a true hole in the wall restaurant in the Kaimuki area. It's more of a small hallway with a window to order from and that's it. Their menu is simple and the prices are quite economical. The only thing that was odd about the menu is that they have burgers but don't offer fries. It's all good because I drove down Waialae to pick up an order of fries elsewhere. Okata Bento offers burgers, plate lunches, bentos, sandwiches, drinks and a hotdog. They are cash only and they don't make your food till you order it. I was second in line when they first opened up around noon but the kind person in front of me let me order first since I was in a rush. Since my friend raved about their burger/cheeseburger, I decided to order them. It took about 25 minutes before I got my name called out to pick up my order. After I picked up an order of extra crispy fries elsewhere, I headed home to eat. The burger/cheeseburger was smaller than expected but they tasted good. Their beef patty was soft and juicy! Maybe I came in with high expectations but their burger/cheeseburger didn't blow me away. It's still good for what it is and definitely worth the price you pay. I think next time I'm going to get a bento since I see so many Yeeps raving about them. Great hidden gem in Kaimuki (next to Asuka and across Coffee Talk)!

The home of the 2D bento since 1981. Not joking, no matter what angle you look at it, buggah is flat. Doesn't mean it's not good. Simple, local kine grindz from another era. Fried luncheon meat, not Spam, kamaboko, takuan, rolled egg, a piece of fish and whatever you ordered sliced up in bite sized pieces all atop a bed of rice and slivered cabbage. Marinades are strong. The old school flavors bold. The fish is always overcooked and rubbery but so what? It is exactly what it should be. Nore: All proteins available for the bento can be ordered as a plate lunch (two scoops rice, mac salad but none of the other bento sides). Mac salad can be ordered as a side for the bento; $2. Inexpensive. Everything $10.50 or less. Cash only. Odd anthropological observation - On a recent Saturday, over half of the customers were Zoomer tourists. Watching how they interact with each other and their environment and trying to figure out their bizarre abbreviated language is wildly entertaining. 2D but spanning four generations, impressive. Not destination worthy rather a back of your mind neighborhood place that always satisfies.

No other words except that this is one of the best places in Kaimuki and that Mr. Okata deserves all the support for his one-man show. Truly a gem in the heart of Kaimuki

What makes a community special, small town Kaimuki, a business that helps to weave the unique character of this east Honolulu spot. Okata Bento has been a backbone small business in Kaimuki town for decades. The owner Lyndon is a one man dynamo who sometimes has an assistant to help. The one consistency has always been his attention to a quality food product. We have always been partial to his bentos, others enjoy his delicious sandwiches while others enjoy the classic plate lunches. Nothing fancy, basic, delicious offerings- when you go to Okata Bento you know what to expect. Whenever our son comes home for a visit, a stop at Okata Bento is always on the list. These are difficult times and small operations do not have the deep pockets of big box stores to survive for a long period. Thank you Okata Bento for being a strong link for what makes Kaimuki Town a special place to live and visit. Support local businesses, let's help them get through the pandemic.

Would you describe Okata Bento as a delicatessen, or more like a drive thru local hamburger stand?

A counter style plate lunch type business with a Japanese bent because of the bentos and donburi.

What's your favorite dish at Okata Bento?

My favorite is the Tonkatsu and Char Siu chicken, but I like the Hamburger steak too.. As you can see I like everything!

We put our names on the list and there were a handful of parties before us. Fortunately, we only waited about 20 minutes to get seated on a Saturday. The place is like a spacious diner with a bar counter, booths and lots of tables. Look for the beautiful, long bench table that's carved from a tree. Our server, Jason, greeted us with a warm smile and took our drink and food orders. We got a few items that we don't usually see at Hawaiian restaurants back home. Hawaiian Moco: opted for the lau lau as suggested with lomi salmon and macaroni salad. For $24.99, it was huge, succulent, flavorful and worth the price point! Smoked Moco: the Kiawe-smoked meat was tender, sautéed with bell peppers and onions and topped with a yummy smoked aioli and local egg. The mini for $16.99 was the perfect portion for me. Fish Tacos: the fish was fresh, cooked perfectly on taro tortillas with chili aioli, avocado mousse, shredded lettuce and lomi salmon. The fries were thick and crispy too. Squid Lū'au Combo: with lomi salmon and poi, sweet potato and haupia (a coconut dessert) the squid was cooked in a starchy broth. It was like nothing I've had before. Not too salty but not strong in flavor either. This was my friend's choice and she loves it. We enjoyed everything we had and were so stuffed! They validate parking for the structure.

The food however, was disappointing. I had the lau lau combo. The lau lau was very dry. The leaves were dry, the pork was dry. There was not even a little fat in it. There were two of us that ordered it and same for both of us. My mom ordered the ribs, sherated it was tough and chewy. The ones that ordered the squid Lia were quite satisfied. I should've ordered the squid Lia combo instead. Not sure if I'd be back here though. But in all fairness, service was great!

Of course when she is back to visit every year, she still request to stop at Rainbow! Her favorites is the breakfast plates, mixed plate especially BBQ beef and boneless chicken with gravy & for me I LOVE the boneless chicken, gravy all over but I need mines on the side along with the mac salad and a slushie float. I used to work at the district office and we were housed at Hawaii School for Deaf & Blind, so close to Rainbow, when I would visit once a month, a treat to myself, such comfort food! I sure miss those Rainbow Drive-In days with my daughter and for my lunch break! Lets talk about the breakfast fried rice special, lately I've been stopping here every weekend to pick up a plate of fried rice ( available til sold out) & from experience-they do sell out, the fried rice plate is only $9.95. This is the best fried rice ever, my opinion and always enough for me and hubby! The fried rice comes Portuguese sausage, chopped veggies ( celery & onions) and flavored nicely with choice of 2 eggs that covers the rice completely. I always get soft scrambled. I love the finishing touches of the green onions. yums! The rice is perfect hits every time & rice is not watery. Chef's kiss to the staff who made this fried rice. The line and parking lot can get crazy but the staff works hard to get the line moving fast, * there's a separate window for phone and on-line orders. I am so glad I live close by to this Gem. My go to for breakfast and plate lunches!! I think it is time for a boneless chicken plate lunch fix. I like that some of the old specials are now permanently on the menu (even though they still sell out). But the quality needs to remain. I always order a mix plate and egg salad sandwich. Even if I order 10 plates, those 2 items will always be in my order. So I can confidently say that I'm sad that they are not the same as before. My recent mix plate (with gravy for nearly $17) had just one tiny fish and the chicken was pink inside! Also needs little more gravy. The egg salad sandwich (for nearly $7) had dry and thick bread. I admit, most times the bread is dry and I always question why I keep ordering it. I always wonder if I'm the only one to order since it seems like the bread dries out before being used. But now it seems like the bread is homemade and handcut (different thickness). On the plus side, the egg salad was tastier than I remember! We also ordered tater tots and chili, which were both great! Did the parking stalls get more narrow? Just kidding, I know they were always rather small.

From the street front, its kind of hard to tell where the restaurant is. I didn't notice the sign until standing literally right in front of it. (on Beachwalk, makai of Hard Rock) When you enter, theres a sign to meet the host upstairs. We asked to sit on the patio because it was such a nice evening. At the time, there were lots of available table. But once the sun went down it became pretty lively in the main dining room. Pila was our sever, he was fantastic! Give him a raise! Between the 4 of us, we ordered 2 mains, the OG fried rice that you can never go without, and a salad because we are so well balanced. OMG SO MUCH FOOD! We did end up needing take out boxes for the rice and chicken. Honestly, I probably could have finished it off if i wasn't drinking, because it was DELCIOUS AF *drool*. Traditional Hawaiian comfort food, but not quite a standout for us…read more We originally planned to eat at Helena's Hawaiian Food, but it was closed for the July 4th week, so we ended up at Waiahole Poi Factory to try traditional Hawaiian dishes. We ordered the Kanaka Nui ("The Works"), which came with laulau, kalua pig, chicken long rice, squid luau, poi, lomi salmon, and haupia. It was a great way to sample a variety of local staples. The chicken long rice was comforting, and the squid luau had a rich, creamy coconut flavor. Unfortunately, the kalua pig was dry and overcooked, and the meal overall didn't leave a lasting impression. We also tried their famous desserts. The Sweet Lady of Waiahole, featuring warm house-made kulolo (dense taro, coconut pudding dessert) topped with haupia ice cream and Tahitian Sweet Lady with warm banana poʻe (Tahitian-style sweet mashed banana and coconut pudding) paired with haupia (coconut milk) ice cream. Both were interesting, but the desserts were just OK for me. They reminded me of a more muted, less sugary version of bananas foster. The haupia ice cream was the only good part of the dessert, though I wished the flavors had a little more punch. Service and cultural experience: Everyone was incredibly sweet and welcoming, with that lovely Hawaiian hospitality. What I especially appreciate is that Waiahole Poi Factory is preserving and sharing Hawaiian traditions rather than simply serving food. Their dedication to kalo (taro) and traditional poi-making, including steaming and hand-pounding taro, helps keep an important part of Hawaiian food culture alive. Fresh hand-pounded poi is traditionally made on Wednesdays and Sundays, around 10:30 AM, so it's worth checking ahead if you'd like to witness this tradition firsthand. One thing to consider is the location. The shop is a detour from popular tourist areas like Waikiki, so it's best visited while exploring Oahu's Windward Coast or driving toward the North Shore rather than making a separate trip just for lunch. Overall, I'm glad we tried it for the chance to sample traditional Hawaiian cuisine, but between the mixed food experience and the detour required, I wouldn't go out of my way to visit again. If you're already exploring the area, it's worth considering; otherwise, I'd prioritize it only if trying traditional Hawaiian dishes is high on your list.
