We had coach Arezoo for the group lesson. She was funny, informative and experienced. The first 10 minutes we learned about archery, safety, what to do and what not to do. I adore Ohlone Archery. I would describe Ohlone as primarily an private indoor traditional archery range with a little archery shop on the side. Shop-wise, it's not the kind where you can just show up and find whatever you need. They do have a limited selection of items on hand, mostly archery accessories like if you need a new arrow rest or bowstring or an arm guard. The have a few bows on consignment that aren't particularly cheap. If you need something right away, they usually recommend Archery Only in Newark. That said, they are a local dealer for Lancaster Archery Supply (arguably the largest archery supply store in the nation) and you can pick gear from their catalog and Ohlone will order for you, and it should take a couple weeks to arrive depending on what you get. And if you're a member you get a discount. They also have an arrow fletcher on hand if you want custom arrows (and eventually--you will--want custom arrows). As far as the indoor range goes, because of covid they downsized/spread it out to nine lanes with tables in between each one. Two lanes are fixed at 10 yards or less and the rest are 20 yards or less. It's $55/month to be a member, and they're open 4-5 days a week (depending on season). You can also drop in for a single session but it's like $25 or something. Also if you're not an experienced archer you'll have to do a beginner course so you learn about safety, etiquette, shooting basics etc. They also have shop bows you can use if you don't have one of your own. There's also a nice little community of folks that are regulars, some who've been going to Ohlone for years and a few newbies like myself. Everyone is super nice and willing to share their knowledge and wisdom. Some of the staff are also great archers in their own right. There's also a few coaches that they can refer you to. They have sort of an informal league where people of different shooting classes and yardages can post their results up on a scoreboard. Occasionally people might regulate the line if you aren't using the right etiquette. And Aaron will yell at you if you move the bales without asking lol (don't move the bales without asking!). I think if people are members long enough they might invite you to some other events or outdoor shoots. Or so I've heard (ahem). Friends and I had a great experience during a private group lesson with Kari. I scheduled by email about a month in advance, and received a reminder the week-of. Gear was provided for the class. We learned about the anatomy of the bow, how to shoot, and how to safely operate in the space. Our instructor (Kari) was friendly and knowledgeable, and provided tips to each person throughout the session. Time went by quickly, very much in the "time flies when you're having fun" kind of way. A great little range with everything you'll need and want. I first walked into this range 8 months ago to take my instruction/safety course (required). Since that day everyday I spent at Ohlone was a great day filled with great kind people. Everyone here is very kind and always willing to share tips that the picked up on over their years of shooting that will quickly help you become proficient as a beginner (pick Henry's brain). The community at Ohlone makes you feel at home and wanting to come back whenever you can. Ohlone is definitely well equipped, when I took my family to another range back in my hometown they had very poor equipment that was not fitting to get anyone into archery, the equipment was practically unusable. Ohlone has very quality recurve bows from Samick as well as plenty of arrows that range from different lengths based on your arm length. The staff here is great! Nico, the range owner is very kind and when you take your first lesson here he'll treat your right and teach you everything you need to know to get started! When you think you're ready to buy your own gear the shop owner's Henry, Charelle and Barbra will help you get everything you want and need at an affordable price. I wanted to host a beginner group archery class for my friends and I. After reading many reviews and researching a variety of places, this location seemed the best choice. Many of the other ranges were outdoors, had group lessons very infrequently, were for people who owned their own equipment/had experience, or, in one case, had a racist instructor. You can imagine the relief I felt when I found this place. It fit the criteria I needed, an indoor location for beginners without equipment and lessons that could be booked with a certain group size. The group class my friends and I had with Nico was great! Leading up event he was communicative and answered all of my questions. During the lesson he was extremely patient, very clear in his directions, and a great instructor overall. It's very clear he has a lot of experience. There is an emphasis on safety and it shows. One more note: my friends and I like to dress up on the weekends and we're a colorful bunch. We've experienced disrespectful comments and behavior at other places in the past. Nico was respectful and kind to everyone, which meant a lot to me. We had a great experience and I hope to return at some point. I just need to make time! read more

Archery newbie over here! So happy that I stumbled across Ohlone Archery (all thanks to Yelp!) I came here with one of my good friends because we were looking to do something fun and new. Both of us had never really touched a real bow and arrow before...I mean, I had an archery unit back when I was in the 7th grade, does that count? We were instantly welcomed and realized upon arrival that it would have probably been a good idea if we had scheduled a lesson before showing up. Luckily, it was a slow day and we were given an impromptu lesson before getting our hour of shooting in. I learned so much about form and aim that I felt like a pro at the end of our session. Ok, that might be an exaggeration. But I felt pretty bad ass with my little forearm guard and 14lb. bow. There is so much skill and precision that goes into archery. In fact after this experience, my friend was inspired to purchase his own bow...and I think I might consider taking this up as a serious hobby as well. We spent $25 each for an hour of play. Make sure you come in comfortable clothing, you can't wear jackets on the line. And you're given a key to a locker if you bring your personals! My teen daughter picked up Archery to fulfill her high school PE requirement. She's been coming here regularly for a few months now. One thing that strikes me about Ohlone is the diversity of the patrons. From teens to seniors, men and women, all different kinds of people. The venue is very bright and welcoming to all. Nico, the owner, couldn't be more friendly and gracious. There is a great community of folks who seem to all have a fondness and respect for one another, at all skill levels. Woody runs the JOAD (Junior Olympic Archery Development) club, where a group of youth meets every Saturday to learn to shoot safely, challenge themselves, and have fun. He also encourages the kids to compete in regional tournaments, which we will do for the first time in a few months. They also have leagues, private and group lessons, and open range times. Usually there is a beginning group lesson ending as we arrive for JOAD on Saturday, and everyone seems to be having a good time. I came here with a group of friends yesterday and loved every moment of my first archery lesson. Nico was personable, patient, knowledgeable, thorough, and a great trainer. I've always wanted to try archery and came to Ohlone through a Groupon deal. It was $22 for a couple which was totally worth it for a hours session, equipment included. I think it's $12 for a person through Groupon. We arrived 10 minutes early to complete our waivers and payment. After our group of 6 arrived we began with 10-15 minute safety and basic training. Nico picked out our bows and we practiced holding them properly and adjusted to the weight. When we started shooting he corrected our posture and provided helpful tips throughout the session. Midway we were shooting on our own like pros. The entire experience was seamless. I'll definitely be back to work on my aim. It was a lot of fun! If you can get 6 people in a class (total lanes available) it feels like a private lesson. We got some pretty awesome group photos in too :) Thanks for everything, Nico! Tips: - huge parking lot in front - wear comfortable shoes - book your class in advance, especially if you go with a group (max 6) - when you shoot: elbows up, take a few seconds to set up your shot and don't overthink it. This was very fun! Our instructor was very knowledgeable and very friendly too! He gave us some safety training at the beginning of the class, then we got to practice for the rest of the class. He was also really good at giving us tips on how to improve our aim and posture. After the class, there was a couple who stayed behind to learn more about archery, and the instructor was very passionate expanding this couple's knowledge. The four of us also stayed behind to have him take pictures for us (heehee) and we also asked a bunch of questions, and you could tell the instructor was just there to help us learn more about archery! Very cool. And after this initial lesson, we're free to come in on Tuesday/Wednesdays every week for only $15/hour to practice!! Would love to come back. Great experience!! read more

This place only allows about 6 people to shoot at a time, but the facility is clean and friendly. We did a private lesson for $25 each and the owner Nico who was also the teacher was very friendly and helpful. He was very friendly, and informative on safety and technique. For this being the first time learning, the experience was great, fun and I would sure go back to this place again. Finding the place is a little tricky since it shares its parking lot with other industrial buildings and businesses and it was near the back of the lot. But it's basically right across the street from the marina outlets. Overall good place to learn archery. Also one of our friends said they learned more at this place then they did at the archery place in Newark. So if you're torn between which place to go to, I recommend this place. read more

I am new to archery (my high school archery P.E. sessions do not count - we are all just lucky no one lost an eye). I had been interested in doing archery for a few years but had not gotten around to taking a lesson, finally a friend of mine started doing archery in NYC and I decided she couldn't have all the fun without me. I jumped the gun a bit and purchased a recurve bow online that was a bit too heavy of a draw weight for me but Nico (owner and proprietor of Ohlone Archery) kindly swapped out the limbs for me at my last session. The beginning archery class is great and a must do, it is a really good introduction to archery, proper form, and range etiquette. The range is really nice, all the targets are adjustable for different skill levels (different distances) and Nico provides all the equipment so if you don't have your own bow don't fret, everything is provided. The vibe is very friendly and the other archers are super nice and supportive. I have been three times so far, and the last time I had a private lesson with Woody Walters which was very helpful! I highly recommend Ohlone Archery to anyone interested in beginning archery, or more advanced archers! Great people, great range. read more

I attended the group beginners lesson with Arezoo Heydari. She has trained Olympic athletes. Before the lesson, started we had to sign a waiver, wear arm guards, and stand by our assigned spot. There is adequate spacing between each student. Arezoo explained the 11 steps of aiming and the range safety rules. Before practicing with arrows, we practiced with the bow only so that we would learn to hold the bow & release the aim correctly. During the practice, we got individual feedback to correct ourselves. Archery is technical and it's like meditating with the bow and arrow. The bow and arrows given for the lessons were well-maintained. The 90 mins of the class went by quickly. I enjoyed the last round of practice, where we had to train our minds to focus on the target. The class ended after a quick stretch. Arezoo's assistant coach, Ahmed, was friendly and gave students positive encouragement and feedback to improve. read more

I've been interested in learning more about archery for sometime now so I decided to book a Saturday lesson here. The lesson was $35 which is well worth it for the quality of the lesson and the skills I left with in under an hour. I heard there's a groupon so if you're price conscious you can still check this place out. Surprisingly it was everything opposite of what I envisioned, but in a great way. It's so relaxing and stress free, I truly had a great time learning. Nico and his instructors were so informative and truly take pride in offering the best, safest archery instruction. I wish I could remember the guy giving me instruction, he was a bit younger but very helpful and positive. I'm new to archery. When I first came here, I'd shot a bow once in the Oakland hills. I knew I liked it and that I wanted one, but not much else. So I picked a Saturday afternoon to drive down. Nico, the owner, helped me choose my draw weight and suggested a bow I might want to order. I had it delivered to my house and took it in the following weekend, and he helped me set everything up and fit me for arrows, and suggested some accessories from the ones he had in stock. It was perfect. Having someone who knows what they're doing saved me a tremendous amount of trial and error. I'm still learning, but this is a comfortable environment to shoot in if you're new. You'll get to see a lot of experienced archers shooting compound bows and complicated recurve setups, but there are also plenty of other beginners, and while the range is essentially a one-man operation, Nico is extremely attentive and helpful. (One thing to be aware of is that they don't quite sell bows here, although they are available to rent. It makes sense why he does this--it's less overhead. Just don't expect to go in looking for a bow and walk out with one in the same day.) Anyway, I think this is an excellent indoor range regardless of your skill level. read more

My archery experience was made perfect thanks to the amazing owner, Nico! He has a tremendous amount of passion for archery and it shows through the way he teaches. My boyfriend and I were initially looking to rent lanes to shoot ($15/hr), but we soon realized we needed a bit more guidance and pointers. We instead opted for the group lesson ($35/hr).. and it was SO WORTH IT. Nico takes the time to work on the positioning of your hand and body and I kid you not - I went from shooting arrows off the target, to on the target, to getting a couple of bulls eyes at the end! I bought a coupon through Zozi to try this place out. I'm so glad I got the chance go. I brought a friend with me and even though he was really late, the instructor was accommodating and allowed him to shoot a bit more after everyone was finished just to make up for the time he lost arriving late. If you are like me and is hesitant with trying something completely new that is not food related and don't know if it's completely worth the full price to try the activity (unless your friends completely hyped it up), get a coupon and then go. There was another beginner pair that got their coupon from Groupon or Living Social. It was very easy to register online via their website. They have a lot of availability after work and seems like it would be pretty to go after work and just shoot some arrows. When your registration is confirmed, you are instructed to read the safety instructions online. When I drove to the address, I thought I got it wrong because it was just a parking lot in front of a paint store? I was really confused, but I was also a bit early. Then I noticed there is a small standing sign that is in front of the garage of the archery. I was like, OH! It's happening in a garage! hmmm....sort of shady!! Because my shady-senses were on high alert, I waited in the car for my friend to come. Then he said he was running late. I pulled up my courage and just went and then saw other people standing there with their wrist protectors on. It was such a relief to see that because my shady-senses could some times be correct. The lesson was very easy and fun. I did a group lesson and there was 6 of us in the end. It was a bit tight, but still a lot of fun. You get to have a little competition with each other to see who shoots closest to the center target. Then there are people like me who is a walking clutz, dropping arrows, and shooting into other people's targets...feel free to judge me. The instructor repeats the safety instructions for those who didn't read it online. I did, but still that's a lot of reading material to remember after a long day of work.The instructor ends up giving you tips on how you personally can shoot better. He will analyze your breathing, your stance, how you're holding the bow and arrow, etc. It was a pretty in depth instruction for a small group lesson in my eyes. Which made this place damn amazing. I will definitely be coming back again with friends and you know, to ultimately be just like Katniss. Who doesn't want to be a badass who can shoot arrows? read more

I love Ohlone Archery! If you're interested in learning archery, this is the place to go. My husband and I took a lesson in August, then again in December. Nico is a wonderful instructor: patient, clear, encouraging, and always willing to offer advice upon request. When he's not busy during open shooting, he can even help coach you by using video breakdowns to show what adjustments you need to make. We now shoot regularly every week, and bought our bows from Nico rather than online to support his business (his prices are the same as what you'd pay at Lancaster Archery, but no shipping charges). He is also a great fletcher - I love seeing all the different sets he's currently making for other clients. The space is tight: only six lanes and typically 10 yards distance. If all the lanes are taken, it can feel a little cramped, but that just means working on your line discipline. I'm looking forward to become comfortable enough with my abilities to join league shooting, which expands to 15 yards. The community is polite, respectful, and easy to talk to. Saturday open shooting is very busy when it starts at noon, but we've changed our arrival time to later in the afternoon which usually gives us plenty of room. It's a long drive from Berkeley, but it is worth it. Besides, it's nice to make an afternoon of archery and then head to one of the San Leandro brewpubs.
