Ask the Community - Marin Archery Shop

I recently purchased a crossbow, and I'm curious whether such a blasphemous device would be permitted on your range? I'd like to be able to practice with it somewhere, but I no longer live on a farm in the Pocono Mtns in PA.

Hi! Yes - we allow crossbows on our indoor range, and all of our range targets are crossbow-rated.

How much does it cost to come in, rent gear & shoot?

Coming in is free! Range use is $30/day, equipment rentals are $30/day.

I inherited an old Browning Prep bow. It is missing the arrow rest (part is still stuck on.). Does this shop do repairs?

Yes, we do repairs. Bring it by and we’ll get you all fixed up!

Do they have archery lanes and gear for people to rent?

Yes! In the San Anselmo shop, we have a single lane (suitable for one or two people testing bows, taking lessons, or paper tuning). For larger groups, or for individuals wanting to work on their shooting at a variety of distances, we offer rentals,… Read more

After a poor experience getting setup for my first compound bow, I came to Marin for a second opinion.

On a recent Saturday morning, my wife and I joined a small group of others in an archery class at Backroom Archery-Turra's. We entered through the retail shop, where that was filled with all kinds of archery paraphernalia that I had no idea about, and we were escorted through a back door to a big room-- the range. Our husband and wife team provided safety information and then handed out bows. They worked step by step to help us learn body positions with the bow that would help us become successful archers. Then we practiced launching some 8 arrows down towards the targets. Many of our arrows missed their target-- some sliding down the floor and others striking the thick padded blanket at the end of the room. After each volley (?) of arrows, they would go over another new technique to refine our posture, and each time our accuracy improved. By the end of our class, they had us pin a balloon to the target. I'm still impressed that I was able to pop the balloon two separate times (when the range was clear, we would all walk down the range and collect our arrows and get set for the next round). It was a fun way to spend the morning and for me, quite satisfying. I now have a lot of respect for those Olympic archers-- and Katniss Everdeen. My only suggestion is to wear long sleeves if it's a cool morning. The range room is a big space with a concrete floor and was a little cool. I've recommended the experience to friends and look forward to returning someday-- will be a great activity on a rainy day.

Wow, an archery field in the middle of the Golden Gate Park. Who knew?…read more Recently came here for a beginner archery session with a *socially distanced* group. One of the silver linings of the pandemic is that people are exploring all kinds of interests they've never considered before. I, for once, had never tried archery so I thought I'd give it a go. So glad I did! It was such a cool sport/activity. We rented bow and arrows and a target from a nearby shop and did practice sessions here for a couple of hours. The archery field is nicely maintained and is free to the public. It was quite busy when we came on a Saturday afternoon. All the lanes were full. However, people were courteous and all patiently waited for a lane to open. Although I was very bad at it, I felt super cool shooting arrows like I was in the Hunger Games movie or something. I'd totally come back and do it again. Highly recommend!

Still remarkably unsafe. Went back to the GGP archery field to instruct a beginner at his request…read morethis weekend. Sunday morning, with the lanes full, there's a complete lunatic cosplaying with a horse bow and headphones, rapid shooting from waist level, from distances farther and farther back from the bale on the lane next to us. Then we notice he's actually moved off the field, behind the pedestrian walkway, and has climbed the hill behind the range to continue shooting. He's just spraying arrows, not hitting the bale, from easily 130 yards, with plenty of humans standing in the cone of fire of a casual error. This is insanely unsafe behavior. When everyone's well behaved, I'm sure GGP is fine. I just haven't seen that in a long time.
