I give a one star to sales person Tobias. He brought out the wrong size shoe and I actually asked him if it was the size I requested. And I explained to Tobias his mistake and once again he brought me the wrong size shoe. And Megan brought more shoes out that Tobias didn't bring out for me to decide if I was interested. Tobias couldn't do the job and should be fired. I give two stars because of the customer service from Megan and I did find a pair of shoes that was what I was looking for. Customer service is hit or miss at this store but today, I got excellent service from Kevin. We were shopping for new folding camp chairs and he patiently set up different chairs for us to try out. We got a great deal on some chaise lounge zero gravity chairs. He even pointed out one was broken and then called the Corte Madera store to reserve two for us. Major kudos for Kevin! read more

I've bought all my shoes from here for the last 10 years until now. I came in to just check if they had any 13 wides in stock, to my surprise they did. When I inspected them they were either used or just very dirty covered in sand. I wiped them clean and tried them on. They were used and not pristine. I asked the managers if they had more and if there was a possible discount for the dirty shoes...... they said 10% was all they would do. The online coupon does the same thing and I'd have dirty used shoes. Sadly after 10 years and 15 pairs of shoes I'm just going to shop on Amazon. They have the same exact shoes for 20% less and they are NEW!!!! They could of keep a lifelong customer today. read more

What a group of losers. I'm handicap and walked in requesting water shoes for a pool exercise class. All 5 grossly overweight slobs pointed with a finger in the direction of my request. The large sized shoes were hanging on the lowest shelf. I requested that one of them assist me and I was informed that they don't do that. I couldn't believe what I just heard. I finally was able to retrieve the size I was looking for and then requested a place to sit down and try them on, once again the fat little fingers came out and pointed to an area in the rear of the store. The bench had multiple pairs of shoes strewn over the seats. I pushed all of the shoes on the floor and tried on the shoes. I journeyed to the front of the store and the General Manager offered to checkout my purchase. I'm surprised he was able to squeeze in the register area because of the clutter and his enormous size. Normally I would have walked out but I needed the shoes for rehab on Monday morning. Does this company have a regional manager? If so, they should pay a visit to the store and clean things up. I find it difficult to believe that a sporting goods store hire a group of people who are the opposite of what should be working in a sporting goods shop. Plus they probably couldn't give you instructions of how to use a product. If any of the group had to move above a snail's pace they would probably have a Cardiac Arrest. In the future I will shop at Sports Basement or online. read more

I was in the neighborhood and popped in, hoping to find a pair of Bear Paw Slippers for ladies. As well as some ladies crew socks. Initially I couldn't find them amongst all the clutter and crap. I asked an associate for help. Initially she had no idea where either of these items were. I asked would she mind asking her associate for these two items. She came back and directed me to 2 pair of socks, that you needed glasses to identify if they were ladies or not. I said, what about the slippers. She directed me to slipper type socks. Sad she didn't know what "slippers" were. I said please ask again, at which point I guess the manager piped in and said "they are over there". Puzzled I said, where is "over there". So he walked over to show me where the slippers were. I said some are priced, some are not, is that the price. His reply, I don't know, we just set this up today. Then he walked away. I said, might be helpful to train the young lady. He said this is her 3rd day. O.K., would have been nice to know. Then the manager said, I never know who's going to show up and all my staff have only been here 3 days. I have inventory tomorrow and it's not going to be good. No it wouldn't, by the condition of the store, it was filthy. Tons of merchandise still on pallets. Shame on Big 5 for not training their staff properly !!!! I feel a bit sorry for this guy and his staff. Clearly he does not get the support he needs from his District Manager and Big 5 Corporation. Sadly, this has been my experience in every Big 5 I go into. This might be my last straw for visiting ANY Big 5. read more

I go there often but one time I called them about crab snares, they put me on hold for 30 minutes and never came back. I had to go there to confront the manager. The place barely has anything in stock because of fishermen selling out the items. Recommend going to the Corte Madera branch instead. They're much better. read more

Both Jon and the other manager working while we shopped for sporting goods and processed our certifications, provided exceptional customer service and had tons of product knowledge. We came down 2 separate days and Jon was there to help from the beginning to the end of our shopping and transaction. The younger staff working could be a little more tuned in to customer service but Jon gave direct feedback and the team realigned perfectly assisting guest. Team members working the sales floor was very friendly which compensated for them possibly missing a few other key customer service items. Again Jon and his other manager kept things in line and when he wasn't helping us he was driving the business! I'll definitely drive the 20 minutes to shop here for the knowledge and service. Huge difference at this store from the nearby Corte Madera store which had the opposite service. read more

They finally came out to help. They don't help you try anything on. The salesman that eventually came out was OK but they definitely don't offer a lot of help. It was pretty pathetic honestly. The shoe sales at this cut rate sporting goods supply joint can be good. I got high quality Vasque hiking boots that sell elsewhere for $109 for $39. A good spot for getting cheap watches, cheap binoculars, cheap camping gear. For Ammo or quality products don't waste your time! Went into Big 5 in Terra Linda this morning, right at opening. I wanted to buy some snake shot ammo. One clerk sends a kid over to help me. Other than he knew nothing of the products he's selling, he couldn't or anyone else was not 'certified' to sell ammo. They told me the manager comes in at 12:20pm. This is the second and last time I will try to buy any gun related or any items in this store again. Three employees at the register and no one can sell some of their items, I guess due to the new ammo purchasing regs. Don't waste your time with this store. I came here HOPING they would have a pair of running shoes and also turf shoes for soccer. The running shoe selection was terrible, not really surprised, and it turns out they don't carry turf shoes... nbd I didn't figure they would but thought I would check anyway. The two stars is not for the lack of selection but the horrible customer service. I asked two workers, who were just standing around having a conversation, if they had any turf shoes. They looked at me like I was speaking a foreign language, and when I explained what it was they said they would be on the wall if they did and pointed me towards a direction. They were not there I already checked. These two workers were so focused on their conversation about this girl one of them was going to hook up with later, they failed to mention the ENTIRE AISLE of soccer cleats they had. I always enjoy browsing for sporting goods when one of the salesmen is loudly bragging to his friends about his plans to "anally pummel" their girlfriend that weekend. With kids in the store. (The mother overheard too and complained.) Awesome family experience! That aside, wide selection of low end sporting goods. Decent stuff if you're picking up a sport, and don't want to invest the cash - but for the most part it's like a poor man's Sports Authority. (Which says a lot.) Fishing license? Step right up. I had just finished running some errands in Marin and the very last item on my list was to purchase a fishing license so that I could put in a few casting moves prior to heading out for some Halibut and Striper charters with family and the fellow. Located in a varied strip mall in San Rafael (Safeway flanks the other end) this is a slightly smaller Big 5 but still pretty much stocked with items on the go. I was able to locate a vinyl 8 pound hand weight by Ivanko, priced at $20 (slightly more than Target but beggars can't be choosers) and my fishing license at $41. The variety of fishing lures/tackle/poles is somewhat limited. Granted I needed to update my freshwater lures since I found out that the loser I was with last year apparently kept some of that stuff. First rule of thumb? Dump a liar/thief at first signs and never leave stuff at their place. More than likely, you are not the only one they are stealing from. read more

This is my go-to place for marked down sunglasses. I can usually find a decent pair of quality shades for around $40. I've always found the people in this store friendly and helpful. You may have to wait a minute for someone to come over and open the sunglasses display but I've never encountered any attitude at all. The other Big 5 in Corte Madera, however, is a different story. Oh boy, the people who are giving this location poor reviews should never, ever even consider going to the Corte Madera Big 5. /ominous read more

Big 5 sporting goods is trying to kill me I went in yesterday in a tissue Bay should have the on coming lock down and got in line behind 10 men you already owned many guns and were simply there to buy another one after an hour of being ignored I finally got somebody's attention and asked to purchase a gun in which they told me that there would not be any time for me to get a gun any longer I would now have to wait schedule an appointment within the next 10 days. Since my time their timeline wasn't gonna go with the national mandate for a curfew I wanted to just choose one weapon right away I had had the idea to get a Mini crossbow I asked for the Mini crossbow from behind the counter and somebody gave me 1 and I said thank you I pawn coming home to the story to assemble my new Mini crossbow I discovered that the Box I was handed had none of the parts I needed for this crossbow assembly. Clearly it was already bought and returned and is missing the manual, the warranty and the necessary bolts for assembly. But every other man who was before me was able to walk out with a wholly assembled gun. If this is how people are going to treat others in the Apocalypse I'm gonna have to pick or better weapon. I am not one to complain, but I'd like to share my horrible experience with this Big 5 store. Back in November, I was given a pair of Nikes as a gift while I was in LA. Unfortunately, they were the wrong size. I decided to exchange them when I arrived home. I went to the Serramonte location, and they didn't have my size. I decided to return them to the Terra Linda location since I live in the area. The young lady that helped me said it should not take more than 6 weeks and they they would call me. 4 weeks later, I decide to stop by just because I was at Northgate. The young lady who helped me the first time, said they still have not arrived, but that it was IN TRANSITION. She assured me that they would give me a call when they got the shipment in. It's been 8.5 weeks, and I decide to call the store. They said they STILL have not gotten the shoes. In fact, the associate told me that the shoes were not in transition. After putting me on hold more than just a few times, he told me he could get them shipped to the Terra Linda store in 2 Fridays. I asked him why Hannah told me that my shoes were in transition, when it really wasn't. He said something along the lines of, "the other store might have dropped the ball, but it's out of my control. All I can do is put in the order." While having this conversation, he was definitely distracted. I could hear him help a customer/associate while I was trying to talk to him. It's frustrating when I don't feel like I'm being heard. What would have happened if I didn't call the store today????? The shoes were not in transition, so the order was not put in. The shoes would have never arrived, and I wouldn't have gotten any call!!!! I explained to him that the shoes were given to me as a gift, and paid for with a credit card. Although I have the receipt, I don't have the credit card. Supposedly the policy is they NEED the credit card and the receipt. It's ridiculous that they can't take the credit card info over the phone, or even give me a f******* discount. I won't get the shoes until 10.5 weeks after I went into the Terra Linda store the first time. Nike has probably made 2 newer versions of the shoe by now. Overall, horrible customer service. I've had trouble with them in the past. I had no choice but to deal with these people, AGAIN. The place is a sh*t hole, go to Sport's Authority if you can, or just go to a different location. read more

The interior is not attractive; it might best be described as an OCD/claustrophobic's nightmare. It's very cluttered with small aisles. But like a lioness on the hunt, the clutter becomes my landscape to roam for the perfect prize while remaining camouflaged from pesky employees. What this gal found on this visit were two pairs of shoes. One was a pair of hiking shoes for 15 on clearance and a pair of running shoes for 24 on sale. They are both named brands (Sketchers and Adidas). I did have to hunt down an employee to get my size from their storage in the back but afterwards I walked out quite happy. I'd recommend trying this place out for sports gear or shoes as it seems they've always got something on sale for a great price. read more

Brian helped us find the perfect pair of runners for my partner (who is quite picky about her shoes as she's on her feet all day every day being a hero at work and at home) and was not only patient, but eager to help. This place got lousy ratings and I'm not sure why; the people who work here are helpful and the prices are reasonable (the asics we picked up yesterday were more than fairly priced). They also offer a variety of protein bars (among them, my favorite quest flavors). read more

This store begs the chicken egg query. Were the courtesy clerks (an oxymoron in this case) rude miserable creatures before they were hired by Big Five or did they become so after working there? I have never once entered this store and been treated well. Every clerk acts as if they would rather be any where but ringing up my sales. After being treated so abysmally yet again by staff member, I finally decided to write a Yelp review. I bought two t-shirts, running shorts and a package of athletic socks. I go up to the counters and see one counter has a closed sign while the other has all this crap all over it (price tags, merchandise labels, etc). To me, it looks like neither counter is open so I ask the woman behind the counter which counter is open. She sullenly points to the counter with all the crap all over it. So I try and find room to put my items down upon without messing up the crap. She continues to put tags on merchandise with her back toward me ignoring me. Finally, she heaves a great big sigh and without greeting me she rings me up neglecting to tell me the total. After asking me if I needed a bag and acting put out when I replied, Yes please," she stuffs the items in the bag and thrusts the bag toward me with nary a thank you or a you- have- a -good-day wish. I later looked at my receipt and discovered that the two shirts and shorts were rung up two dollars more than the price on the tags Ihad been overcharged six dollars.. This means I need to go back in and inform the staff that they are over charging customers. But the idea of going back in there only to be treated badly does not appeal to me. Suffice to say, I will not go back in there again. I can only imagine this store is still in business because it's the only sporting goods store in the vicinity--I think they have a if-it-ain't-broke-why-fix-it? mentality. I don't mean to single out just the aforementioned sales clerk because her behavior is evocative of how all of the sales clerks act. One time I started to enter the store at nine fifty-nine AM and a hurried and frantic young man screams,"You can't come in here yet! We don't open until ten! Why are people trying to come in already?" It's as if management goes out of its way to find the rudest, most unpleasant sales staff. If you must patronize this store just be forewarned there is no such thing as customer service and be sure that what the register is ringing up matches what is on the sales tag. read more
