Kings Mountain Archers is such a cool spot if you're into archery and hiking. It's a bit of a drive, and parking can be tricky at times. Some people park lengthwise on the street, which takes up extra space, please park diagonally to the road on the dirt to leave room for others . That said, it's an awesome place to hike with your bow and arrow. I really appreciate that they offer this space to archers for free, though donations are definitely encouraged. The owner is super chill and really generous for providing this spot. They even offer free lessons, but be sure to sign up at least 15 days in advance! Also please keep it trash free! They have trash buckets at every post! read more

What a wonderful free outdoor archery range/course. However, let me give you a heads up because it was quite difficult to find the first time coming here. MAKE SURE TO GO ON THEIR WEBSITE TO FIND THE RANGE. You enter through a brown gate that is NOT labeled mentioning an archery range. You park outside on the road, where there's maybe 4-5 spaces around the entrance scattered around. You park outside then walk in through the brown gate entrance. The course is wonderfully laid out and gives you a variety of targets through the 28 target course. You go through the course similar to a golf course. Takes about an hour to finish and you end up walking about a mile or so. It's got some great scenery and you'll even sweat a bit going through 28 targets. This of course is a public range so you must have all your own personal bow and gear! read more

This was our first time coming to KMA and I absolutely loved it. Simply amazing. If you're familiar with outdoor range shooting this is the perfect course to go shoot on - a perfect blend of shooting and hiking. Best part is it's FREE! The course was beautiful and well maintained. They have some really awesome long range targets, and marked all the yardage. The bales are packed really tight so there's little to no pass through. Few helpful tips: 1. Drive slowly!!! There are loads of bikers on the road, and the roads are narrow in certain spots. So be careful. 2. PARK OUTSIDE THE GATE, unless you're already a member. We had to learn the hard way. When we showed up this morning the gate was unlocked so we went inside and started shooting the course. When we were ready to leave the gate was locked! There were NO signs posted saying that parking is for members only. Just be sure to park outside. Parking is very limited outside said gate, maybe 4 cars. 3. You need to bring your own equipment as there are no rentals for anything. 4. Bring bug spray. lol As silly as this seems, you'll need it. After today, my fiancé and I became members - that whole gate fiasco was not fun. read more

We came out last October for a free lesson to make sure we would enjoy this hobby. Here we are almost 9 months later and we are hooked. Walking the whole 28 targets will give you some great exercise. There is a practice range being built since the old one was closed down due to the danger after the forest service cleared out a lot of the trees behind the targets. None the less there are 28 targets to shoot at and get exercise in the beautiful forest. We also became members shortly after. So it was $60 for the family which was a no brainer. It's $10-15 per hour at an indoor range. 5-6 of those trips and you've paid for your whole family to be able to shoot for a year. Membership gets you parking off the main road and also pays for paper targets, trail maintenance and events. All the people we have met so far have been very helpful with any questions we had. So much to learn and it nice to get help. Come check it out if you have every had the urge to learn archery. I am sure lessons will begin again in the near future. read more

28 targets, a nice lil hike if you do all 28 of them. The targets are well maintained. At least a couple of porta potties scattered through out. The 28 targets are probably on par with what you can find at Redwood. A smallish practice range. The first 14 targets are relatively short, the second 14 have a few more long shots in there. (On this particular day, they did not have any paper animal targets out.) The weather can be a little inconsistent. Thick fog in the AM, but typically a nice day after. Con: parking. If you're not a member, then you park on the road, meaning on the side of the road in the dirt. And there are a VERY limited number or parking spots available. I don't know how they can change this, other than to have someone be there each day to open/close the gate, so not sure if this is something that can improve. TIP: drive slow on skyline and on King's Mountain, as there are A LOT of bikers. Just slow down and take the extra 60 seconds to get to your destination. We will all thank you. read more

KMA is one of the only field archery clubs (aside from Stanford) that I have located on the peninsula. They offer a free class which is volunteer based every other Sunday morning. I think attending one of those classes is a great way to try archery, to see if it's the sport for you. The instructors are excellent. Membership dues to the club is $48 per year, but they have a rolling membership fee, so according to when you apply, it's less than $48. read more

Great place to try archery. We got the free lessons and the instructors were very friendly. Since it is an outdoor range the weather is an important factor. But we had great weather when we went, so it was really nice hitting some targets. They correct your pose and help you aim well. So after a couple of hours of training, you feel like you made great progress for someone who hasnt held a bow-and-arrow in their lives. read more

My GF and I came here this past weekend for the free archery lesson! I believe it was supposed to last 2 hours but we actually got 3 hrs of fun! There were about 18 of us in all being a mix of kids, parents, and adults. There were 3 instructors and I feel they did a great job, especially when you consider the age spread of us all. It takes a special skill to teach people with different learning speeds at the same time. They knew how to talk with the kids, the adults who were having issues, and the adults who grasped it quite quickly. We spent 2 hours at 'Kids Corner' which is a very closeby target with pictures of cartoon characters to hit. We learned all the basics: stance, shooting, aiming, etc. For the last hour we got to walk through 5 targets on the actual course. This was awesome because we got a variety of shots and got to shoot away from 'Kids Corner', lol. Glad we got the fun instructor, haha. This was really a fun experience and I'm very glad we were able to participate in it. read more

I am a regular at Black Mountain Bowmen archery in San Jose, so I am quite familiar with this style of free outdoor ranges. FREE. Yes it's free. How awesome is that? Read the rules, follow them, be respectful, and ask people questions if you're not sure about something. I have only been to King's Mountain once. I had an amazing time. In my opinion, it is the best such free outdoor range in the bay area. It is better than Black Mountain Bowmen Archery for sure. Of course, they are both FREE so really for what it is, they both get 5*. But... 1. King's Mountain has better cover from the sun. You probably don't have to worry about burning. 2. King's Mountain has redwood trees! It's a whole other level of hiking compared to Black Mountain. You could literally not bring a bow, walk the trails, and have a great time. But, uh, I always bring a bow. I mean I live in the south bay so if I just wanted to hike I would find somewhere closer. But anyway, it's extremely beautiful! 3. King's Mountain feels more remote and has fewer people. For me that's a plus. 4. Parking is logistically trickier if you're not a member. There are a few spots near the gate, but you may also need to park somewhere nearby (tricky given the mountain roads). 5. It is a bit difficult to find. GPS / Apple maps doesn't work so well and the destination it brings you to feels like a mistake. I can't recall exactly where it was relative to the gate. It wasn't far off, it just felt weird when I first arrived. 6. As one other reviewer pointed out, drive slowly and carefully when you are on skyline / approaching King's Mountain. There are bikers, steep turns, and limited visibility on account of the turns. And standard advice: * Bring your own gear. You can't rent equipment. * Check ahead of time to make sure the range is open * You, or someone in your group, should really be experienced with archery. I hear they have free lessons. But if you just take a free lesson and then get turned loose you probably won't have as good of a time as if there's someone in your group who really knows what (s)he is doing. read more

I went for my first time last Sunday and had a awesome experience there!! Blue skies, warm wind and beautiful trees!! It was a drive from fremont but definitely worth it!! The trails were very clear and trimmed back. Each target had a new paper target and weren't ripped or shreaded. Its awesome that there's no parking or entry fee to enjoy this hidden jem for archers. read more

This is a beautiful site located at Huddert Park above Woodside. If you aren't familiar with field archery, this range has 28 targets ranging from about 10 yards to 100 yards along a meandering path among the redwoods in the coastal mountains. It's a great hike on mountainside paths that are shaded and cool in the summer. There is a picnic area if you care to take a lunch. A bit like golf except you shoot 4 arrows per target scoring 5 for a center spot, 4 for the next ring, and 3 for the outer ring, for a possible total of 560. You are hiking up and down some pretty steep trails so be sure you are in shape and your footwear is appropriate. There are a number of different classes of archery, from hand made stick bows, to recurves, to high end machined compound bows. Once you have your equipment, this is a very inexpensive sport. If you like hiking in the coastal range and shooting arrows, this place is a treat. You will see deer, peacocks, someone's potbelly pig, and perhaps even a mountain lion. At some point, you can see all the way to the SF Airport. Also, it's usually cool up there in the shade on the mountain. This place is beautiful, but if you just go to hike the trail, be sure to progress from target to target in numerical ascending order for safety. Do not hike from high numbered targets to lower number target. The Kings Mountain Bowmen (and Women) are a friendly and helpful group. They have lessons from time to time, and membership is only $48 per year per individual, which entitles you to parking. You can shoot even if you are not a member, but you have to park outside the gate. It is a beautiful setting and well maintained. But you need to know that you can not park in the parking lot. There is no signage telling you this. The only sign tells you the range is open from 8:00AM until dawn. When I got there at 3:00PM the gate was wide open. When I left at 5:30PM the gate was locked and it took me about an hour and a 911 call to find the friendly ranger who unlocked it for me. Simply not necessary. read more
