It wasn't…read moreyour conventional party, which was perfectly cool with me. 2 hours was perfect for the kids as climbing takes a lot out of you. The staff was patient & worked really well with everyone. It was a lot of the kids first time climbing & I was nervous they weren't going to like it, turns out they had an amazing experience. Thank you Movement! S/o to Ben for being so kind to all of us, I didn't get the other guy but you were amazing as well. Thank you for being patient with us, I know teenage boys could be tough to reign in but you toughed it out! I appreciate it! I'm considering a membership after this.

I've climbed here several times on weeknights after work (passed my belay check here) and have also…read moredone restorative yoga with Anfisa, as well as a couple of the weekend Flow yoga classes. Maybe I'm just not enough of a climber to look past these things, but I found the environment overcrowded, very noisy (beyond what you would expect for a social zone), and dusty everywhere, even in the gym area. On weeknights, the bag areas are generally so full that people leave their backpacks, shoes, and gym bags in huge circles on the ground. Every time I put down my stuff, I felt nervous that someone was going to mistake my stuff for theirs and take it. Benches are so packed that you have to sit on the floor to put on shoes; the bag areas are so heavily trafficked that it persistently smells like feet (ew!). The last time I was there some months ago, they had 4 Keiser stationary bikes and a few Matrix-branded bikes. The Keiser bikes are old models that do not have a phone holder, so you have to find some place to store your phone while you work out. The bikes and treadmills directly face a lead climbing/top rope wall, so people on the routes are constantly chalking up, and as a result that whole area is very dusty, which is not ideal in an environment where people are doing cardio. I don't know how the gym is on the weekends, but on weeknights there are people everywhere: lining up to climb routes, milling around watching their friends climbing, sitting on the floor, sitting on benches, using the gym equipment. It's like the Chinese saying "people mountain, people sea". There is a mat in the gym area where you can do crunches and such, but that mat also gets very crowded. A pet peeve is that the mirror in the gym area is not floor to ceiling; there is a gap of a foot or so between the bottom of the mirror and the floor, so if you are doing crunches or glute bridges you cannot check your form in the mirror. The yoga room is blessedly quiet and well insulated from the outside. However, the yoga classes I went to were also very crowded. Since the room is large, people would pack, and as a result it was often hard to see the instructor or find a place where there was enough room to stretch out. I think that if you are a devoted climber and you can get used to this sort of environment, this is probably a really great place to climb. But again, I just don't think I'm enough of a climber to look past the hassle of dealing with all this! lol.

All climbing gyms have something of a funk, but this place is the worst. I joined to take the yoga classes mostly, but that's a hard pass. Classes start on time, but the gym allows members to show up late. When they do, they move the curtain, light up the whole room, and the noise of 100 climbers floods the room. Right in the time when you're settling in and trying to focus. Then the weight room is above the yoga room, so you get to hear weights slamming down during class, which is also disruptive. I found the classes super uneven, some being great (Bronwyn) and others being a weird combo of loud music over soft voices so you can't hear the instructor, or instructors borderline shouting at folks to expel breath as loud as possible. Not what I'm looking for. So, no problem, it's not for me. It's close to home, price is reasonable, and they have good climbing facilities. Boulder area isn't the best, but the rest of it is quite good with interesting routes changed often...enough. When I went to cancel, I was hit with a "policy" that you have to cancel on or before the 25th of a month or they will charge you for another month. I reached out on the 26th, 5 days before the next charge cycle. Seemed like plenty. Complained, go zero response. So basically I consider they robbed me of $110, because of course the cancellation policy is not visible..until you go to cancel. Hope it was worth the money, Movement. Cannot recommend.

I do worry that once word gets out about this gym, it'll be nearly impossible to find parking outside of the parking lot (industrial area bordering a huge park). As it's a newer gym, they don't have any top rope routes and the weight room is pretty sparse. I don't think I'd be able to give up my current gym completely due to the limited selection of weight lifting equipment here, and spending an additional $100 just to boulder is...hard to swallow. I'll be keeping an eye out for promotions and additional features to fully make the switch!

Remember those days in the playground and their climbing structures? Well, as an adult, The Peak is the place to reignite that hobby and enjoy the sport with a rich community of professionals and enthusiasts. This huge facility is shared among The Peak's climbing structures, an indoor volleyball court, a casual restaurant, and a small arcade. There aren't many parking spots up front but around the back of the building, you'll see plentiful spots. Once you enter the building, head to the left through the glass doors where you'll see the many climbing walls speckled with multiple colored protrusions. The pricing is transparent and it's all available upfront. They do have day passes, multi-visit passes as well as memberships that will waive your entrance fee. In addition to the entrance fee, you may also be required to pay for the harness and shoe rentals (members get a discounted price). They also have chalk for the more advanced climbers. If it's your first time, consider completing the waiver online ahead of time. You may be asked to go through a quick orientation regarding the use of their auto-belay system, however if you already know how to belay traditionally, they may ask you to go through additional training just to be sure. Each wall seemed to feature a variety of colors to distinguish the different difficulty levels for more advanced climbers. Aside from the walls, they also have a huge structure designed for bouldering with a thick padded floor underneath. The boulder and auto-belay walls seemed the most popular but it didn't seem there was much waiting given the ample space in the facility. There was certainly enough climbing space for everyone. As a novice, the activity was fun and tiring; there's definitely a balance between technique and strength! Despite having entry for the whole day, we definitely were tired out within an hour of constant climbing and by hour two, it was just about time to leave and refuel. Fortunately, the location of this space is quite convenient due to having a restaurant right on site as well as its proximity to the highway and other eateries just a few minutes away. The staff were friendly and informative. Besides the initial onboarding, there wasn't much interaction with them. They seem to keep things organized, cleaned and well-maintained. Overall, The Peak does a fantastic job introducing the sport of climbing to the local community and providing a clean and safe environment for newbies and experts alike. The price is reasonable for an all day activity and even more so if you become a member. For kids, they also have camps to build a new passion and train them up as climbers. For the more serious climbers, you may want to consider investing in the equipment to further save on the rentals. If this is a new challenge for you, take the opportunity to get in on this sport! The Peak makes it relatively easy to pick this up and continue leveling up with each visit!

This gym also has lots of extra little amenities to make sure you are fully supported in your climbing journey. Right now they have a fun free climbing comp going on to celebrate their 1 yr anniversary. The community is SUPER kind and inclusive. You will find wonderful climbing friends here! My only points of feedback is that this gym runs cold - even in 60 degree weather they have the AC on but if I ask them to adjust it, they will help me out. Day 57 of my side-by-side comparison of Movement (fka Planet Granite) vs Mission Cliffs (Touchstone…read moreGym)... look. You're both getting five stars but got different reasons, but both have really made the best of their footprint to maximize their space. +Mission Cliffs (MC) change up their routes on a rotating basis and with much more frequency. They now also have partner climbs (5.11- on the left, 5.10+ on the right for two climbers and two belayers!) - while i love/hate the MC double overhang in the corner and the slightly higher number of true stemming routes, +Movement (Mvt) has some very unique and fun features like that monster stalactite, more aggressive "pretend you're Stallone in Cliffhanger) overhangs and way more in the way of slab practice routes (which are NOT my forte indoors) are various ratings from chicken sh-- to "i totally trust my toes" + not for most but crack climbing. I think Movement has easier practice routes for first timers and those who are angry at their palms being TOO supple, but def more variety at Mvmt, but the cracks in the cylinder at MC are truly a level up. - - both have very limited free weights space/benches compared to your normal "gym" gym and you might find yourselves adding a second membership or using your building or friends building gym between climbs. Both also have small footprints and get very busy even outside of peak times ++ amazing classes though at both + see the bulletin at Mvmt for when shoe resoling comes onsite. A+ perk to arrange that onsite. ++ both have tons of community get-togethers ranging from theme nights to run clubs to game nights (last two at Mvmt) though MC started a group puzzle activity and love the MC memorial pins for their 30th anniversary. + Both have study areas. Mvmt is more of a lounge, MC is a short scramble up from the bouldering. Slight edge to Mvmt but kinda cool that MC requires approach shoes ;-) the high up stretching area at Mvmt though with the views of Alcatraz and the GG Bridge though.... wow + love love love the music at MC (Dan is the man), Mvmt is much more "eclectic" but some of the 6am EDM covers by Ava Max could be skipped (sorry). Did love that the next morning it was Bach concertos and Mozart sonatas and i think the same staff. Again "eclectic" +/- Check-minus MC for transit accessibility (not the worst walk from BART) but parking is rough; + Mvmt for parking (though paid by meter after 8am), otherwise great if you're running or cycling from Cow Hollow Both have deals for new sign ups so keep an eye on those. Summer discounts, January discounts/no initiation fee. + way more generous bring-a-friend options at Mvmt (unrestricted plus one each month on top of free days), come on MC! Don't give us bad wedding flashbacks! Everyone loves the option of a plus one (just make sure you take some photos without that person in the shot... just in case... aka HIMYM "who's that bi---???") ++ MC resets like crazy but in a very organized cycle giving you a few months tops to complete your projects; Mvmt ratings are slightly more accurate but MC is starting to migrate away (especially in the new bouldering rating approach. Still MC is the Northstar of local climbing difficulty (suuuuure this is a black diamond/suuure this is a 12a) but come on, at this age, I need that ego boost!!!!! In the end, the best gym is probably the one you can get to the easiest and where your most reliable climbing buddy(ies) go(es). Both are gems and we're lucky to have them. And yes... now I've accepted that I'll just have a third gym membership and stopped doing one dinner out a month.
